I he I hree R’± In the little red school house, where one teacher did all the work, pioneer children learned their readin', 'ritin', and 'rithmetic. Today, modern students are still sent to school to learn these same fundamentals—readin', 'ritin', and 'rithmetic—with numerous variations, of course. Instead of one teacher, however, Murphy employs a faculty numbering 103. Pictured on these pages are classes typical of the fundamentals, with their varia- tions. An English student, Jackie Botta, struggles manfully with a difficult grammar lesson of nominative absolutes. In Mr. Vaughan's trigonometry class, Lida Swafford solves isosceles triangles, using logarithms. In Miss Hope's world literature class, a popu- lar new course offered for the first time this year, Margie Swift and Mac McLeod locate Spain, the land of Calderon and Cervantes. Unification of England is the sub- ject pursued in maps and reference books by world history students Jimmie Pierce, Frances Davis, and Carolyn Holland. Ed Crenshaw studies in physics the refraction of light passing through a lens. Jack Gentry scrutinizes his biology drawing—a cross section of a leaf. In glee club, a second-year French student, Joyce Bean, teaches the French words to La Seguidilla from the opera, Carmen . During the year, the glee club also learned a Latin hymn.
