To begin with, it was one of my adventurous countrymen. Admiral Pineda, who in 1519 discovered Mobile Bay. We failed in our efforts at colonization under Tristan de Luna, and so Mobile was founded by the French in 1711. At the conclusion of the French and Indian War in 1763. Mobile became an English colony. In 1780 we Spaniards returned under the leader- ship of the youthful Governor Galvez, and our red and yellow flag with the emblems of the castle and lion waved over the city until 1813, when the Amer- icans seized it as part of the Louisiana Purchase. During the three decades of our occupation we built Spanish Fort and gave many of the streets Spanish names, such as, St. Emanuel, Conception, Joachim, and St. Michael. And in 1947 we Spaniards are still coming to Mobile—from Cuba, Costa Rica, Mexico, and other countries to the south. We come to do business, to visit, and even to study at Murphy High School, whose beautiful Spanish Renaissance architecture is yet another sign of the strong Spanish influence in Mobile. (hi Capitan, this braggadocious fellow who struts across the pages of the 1947 MOH1AN, has been adapted from the caricatured Spanish captain of the sixteenth cen- tury Italian popular theater, Commedia dell' Arte.—Art Editor) Page Seven I__«k U (|| A VI I [ |) C ... is the friendiy greeting of Carlos from Campeche, Mexico, as A TilUlin Marilyn, MOHIAN Editor, introduces him to Murphy High School- Marilyn, its FACULTY, STUDENTS, ATHLETICS, and ACTIVITIES. Carlos is pleased to find the Spanish tradition in Mobile and feels at home in the Spanish atmosphere at Murphy. The Spanish Renais- sance architecture, with its familiar arches, patio, and balconies, reflects the glory of his race. In the Spanish department he meets friendly students and teachers, who know his country and love his language. We, the Class of 1947 DEDICATE OUR SPANISH EDITION OF THE MOHIAN TO Miss Bertha Spradlin WHOSE LOVE OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE HAS LED HER TO TRAVEL WIDELY IN LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES BRINGING HER CLASSES ODD FACTS AND STRAY BITS OF KNOWLEDGE WHOSE ENTHUSIASM FOR ALL THINGS SPANISH AROUSES IN HER STUDENTS A KINDRED ENTHUSIASM Page Eleven — M r. RAYMOND G. WILSON is remarkably well suited to his position as principal of Murphy High School. Holding a B. S. degree from Memphis State College, an M. Ed. From Duke University, and an M. Ed. from the University of Illinois, he is now working toward his doctorate. Experience in the schools of Tennessee, both as teacher and as administrator, has given him the necessary background for solving school problems. An affable nature and a democratic phi- losophy make him informal, friendly, and—it is needless to add—popular with the 150 teachers and 3500 students whom he calls his partners in Murphy, Inc.'' Dolores Foster is mak- ing a recording of her voice, with John Swan at the machine. The latest acquisition is a magnetic tape recorder, a one-minute play- back machine that reproduces voices with great fidelity. Art exhibits in room 256 are always interesting in their variety. Kay Gray and David Coley are looking at a display of Christmas cards and posters. In the foreground is Ed Heacker's mural type sketch of an incident in Alabama history . . . Art classes this spring created ideas for ad- vertising Mobile, making designs for notepaper, place mats, and menus. Page Fifteen Barton Academy. under the enthusiastic leadership of Mr. W. C. Stapleton, is the home of 540 Murphy fresh- men. Classroom and other activities closely parallel those at Murphy. The freshmen at Barton have their own band and glee club, a column in MURPHY HI TIMES, and a football team that won the City Championship in the Midget group. Their greatest pride is their library, recently enlarged and redecorated, which can accom- modate from fifteen to twenty per cent of the enrollment. The beige-gray color scheme, fluorescent lights, aluminum blinds, and largo convenient work rooms for the library staff make it—to quote Mr. Stapleton— simply a dream.” Row 1: Ruth W. School bookkeepers under the direction of Mr. Boland have the responsibility of handling all school funds, Four outstanding students are selected each year and for their work receive credit in second- year bookkeeping. Stella Strimenos and Sybil Clark look happy and at home among the ledgers, adding machines, and filing cases of room 211. A Iathematics is fun when the teacher is witty Mr. Vaughan, chair- man of the department. If the students in the picture seem somewhat mature for teen-agers, the explanation is that the class is composed of parents, who were following their offsprings' schedules on Open Night. Page Seventeen OCATIONAL education at Murphy comprises a Technical Training program with 42 students and a Diversified Occupations program with 107. In addition to the regular academic high school subjects required for graduation, the Tech Trade students take four periods of machine shop, radio, or drafting; and the D. O. students train down town in industry. Diversified Occupations students work for a minimum period of three hours a day, five days a week, in retail and wholesale selling, office training, and trades ... In the office of Dr. George I. Doody, dentist, Edwina Cooper makes an X-ray picture of a patient ... At Mobile Steel Company, Inc., Arnett McCoy and Marvin Steiner prove apt pupils and workmen. Industrial arts courses in woodworking, machine shop, me- chanical drawing, printing, and household me- chanics enable a student to prepare for a trade, to acquire helpful information for everyday living, or to develop a useful hobby. Paul Hedgepeth in the upper picture is absorbed in rounding off the base in the design of his whatnot shelf . . . Seifert Hamilton, hav- ing turned his metal tool to specific size, now concentrates on finishing the surfaces with a file. Later with emory cloth he will give the tool a smoother finish. Page Nineteen Bulletin boards at Murphy serve as an aid and an inducement to learning. Mrs. Echols. Miss Gatlin, and Miss Smith are an alert and resourceful trio of librarians. With pictures and book jackets they publicize information about timely sub- jects that range in significance from Ground- hog Day to the United Nations General As- sembly. Latin students in room 169 find that Miss Gay's bulletin board provides a vital link between the so-called dead language and modern culture. Elizabeth Woodward of the VIRGIL class points to a bulletin board filled with pictures, cartoons, advertisements, and other clippings that were inspired by Latin language and civilization. Row 1: E. Alyce Kelly and Gloria Davis are arranging materials for cutting, while the girls at the machines sew industriously. These students, who had as their first project a simple pin- cushion, will in Clothing 8 make tediously intricate baby clothes. I'AMILY Life is a timely study of the problems and obligations of modem family living. The classes meet, ap- propriately, in the model apartment. For each topic studied Mrs. Ross, the teacher, invites a guest speaker. Mrs. Marian Cunningham of the American Red Cross discussed and demonstrated home nursing. Page Twenty-one I UTURE scientists, represented by Bert Mitchell and Pat Macon, learn in chemistry laboratory that Genius IS an infinite capacity for taking pains. ... A group of biology students listen with interest to Miss Craddock's explanation of the structure of the human skull. Visual education, which plays an increas- ingly important part in all courses offered at Murphy, is also under the supervision of the science department. Mr. Kerzic has acquired a library of eighty films and rents an average of fifteen per month. Equipment used by the Visual Education Club, which services all departments, consists of three film projectors, two slide projectors, three movable screens, and four dark rooms. Row 1: W. L. Representing the wide range of artists and subjects are Abbey's King Lear, Homer's Portage, Van Gogh's Sunflowers, and Vermeer's Lady at the Casement. CyHECKING out books from their classroom library in room 222 are William Percy, Dot Huller, and Shirley Jones. Their English teacher, Miss Anne Savage, spon- sors this well-stocked library of two hundred volumes. Four other collections are Mrs. Howard's Library 224, Miss Davis's Tower Li- brary, Miss E. L. CUbmvL TEACHERS AND OFFSPRING MV TEACHER (With apologies to William Cowpcr ) The fourth year now is well-nigh past, Since first your sky was overcast; I know you hope that I’m the last! My teacher! Thy spirits have a fainter glow; saw thee daily weaker grow; 'Twas my own mischief brought thee low, My teacher! Thy patience, once a shining store, For me unfailing heretofore, Now worn from use, doth shine no more, My teacher! But though thou gladly wouldst fulfill The same kind office for me still, Thy strength now seconds not thy will. My teacher! But well thou playedst the teacher s part, And all thy words with magic art Have found a place within this heart, My teacher! • Literature and Ufe in Fngland, p. 361 Pane Twenty dive ■ ! Willcox, Stanford, Sittorlo 3n fflrmnriam With the puffing of Mr. Curley Brown, one of the city's foremost athletic figures, Murphy lost a great friend and sports fan. Mr. Brown, an alumnus of Barton Academy, never held an official coaching position at Murphy, but his guidance and counseling down through the years were appreciated by Murphy coaches. MURPHY-JACKSON An over-eager Murphy eleven took the field against Jackson, and although great- ly hindered by injuries and tough breaks, they fought gamely for three quarters, only to go down in a thrilling fourth quar- ter 6-13 . Murphy played without their All-City back, Gene Fell, and in the first quarter Van Hook, first string center, suffered a serious arm injury. Murphy's lone score came when, after being held for downs in mid-field, Brimm kicked to the Jackson 15-yard stripe. A bad pass from center got through the Jackson back, and after the pile-up that followed, Lipsey, Murphy end, had the ball on Jackson's 3-yard line. Brimm passed to Livingston in the end zone, but Brimm's placement was wide. The Jack- son scores were both made by a star back, Jim Clieland. Lanier breaks through Murphy defense Page Seventy-seven MURPHY-PASCAGOULA MURPHY-PANAMA CITY In a game showing both sportsmanship and good playing a much improved Murphy team went down in defeat, 19-7, to a well-drilled Pascagoula eleven. In the first quarter Pascagoula led off with a touchdown and never relinquished the lead. Murphy's only touchdown came late in the fourth quarter when Hudson, racing in from end, blocked a Pascagoula kick, picked it up on the 30-yard line and ran the distance from the goal. Brimm added the extra point from placement. On the Murphy team, Shipp's tackling, Brimm's punting and passing and Barlow's running kept the Pascagoula eleven on their toes. . A fighting Murphy team went down 46-13 before the bewildering offensive power of the Bay High Tornadoes of Panama City, who scored three times in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Howell chalked up Murphy's first score, following a 60-yard drive. A fumble set up Bay High's next score. Still in the second quarter, the Panthers power-housed 70 yards for their second score. Paul Spikes made the tally on an off-tackle smash. The Tornadoes highlighted the second half with a 35-yard pass from Cobb to Warren. In the last quarter Bay's Drake climaxed a 90- yard march by plunging 16 yards for the score. Big Bill Shipp, Spikes and Howell shared Murphy laurels. Barlow picks up 10 yards around McGill end. Panthers stop McGill for no gain. MURPHY-PENSACOLA A valiant Murphy team fell 14-7 beneath the claws of the powerful Pensacola Tigers. In the first play, the Tigers began their offen- sive, beating the Panthers back 55 yards to their own 6, where a pass from Norman to Mas- sey set up the first score. In the third quarter Lipsey broke through the Tiger line to block a Pensacola punt and pounced over it on Pensacola's 20-yard line. Spikes lateraled to Jordan, who went over for the tally. Brimm passed to Livingston for the extra point. Payne, an ace Tiger back, cut loose with an 80-yard touchdown sprint, turn- ing the tide for Pensacola. Murphy suffered a heart-breaker in the last quarter when Jordan executed a sensational 40-yard run, only to have it called back for an offside penalty. MURPHY-LANIER The Panthers, playing against a fast-break- ing Lanier eleven, again went down in defeat 21-0, although it was one of their best-played games of the season. The Poets had one of the best teams that have played in the city this year. Lanier's star was Renfroe, who made two of their touchdowns, passed for another, and scored three extra points for placement. Al- though Jordan and Spikes played a great game, the Panthers lacked the punch to score. Jordan several times was off on runs that looked like sure touchdowns, only to be tackled from behind. On defense Shipp again was the sparkplug, stopping many Lanier plays for losses. Page Seventy-eight MURPHY-TUSCALOOSA MURPHY-McGILL Th© Panthers first scored late in the first quarter when Jordan went over the goal from the 4-yard line. Brimm completed the conver- sion, and in the second period Jordan sparked another drive that took the ball to the Tusca- loosa 1-yard line. Brimm then ran a quarter- back sneak for score and also made the con- version. Early in the third quarter Barlow scored on a 50-yard run. The visitors' lone touchdown came in the third quarter on a pass from Hobson to Waldrop. In the fourth period Jordan again scored, standing up from the 7-yard line. Thereafter, Tuscaloosa kept Mur- phy on the alert with a pass attack, but Charlie Peter, sub-quarterback, made a great inter- ception, running 45-yards to complete the score of 32-6. In their first intra-city game of the year, the Panthers, although they played a great game, went down 13-0 to McGill. They were ham- pered by tough breaks, fumbles, and inter- cepted passes so often that one could never know what to expect. Three times the Murphy- men had the ball in scoring position, only to have a fumble recovered or a pass intercepted by the alert McGill team. The first McGill score came while the ball was on their own 20-yard line. Fell, attempt- ing a pass, had it blocked, and the ball fell into the arms of Arnold Stroecker, who ran 82- yard to the goal. Their second score came when John Rohmer ran around end for 7 yards and went over standing up. Fine tackling by Murphy holds U. M. S. scoreless He's down! MURPHY-BILOXI MURPHY-U. M. S. The Biloxi Indians went wild, and before the Panthers could find out what was happening, the game was over, and they were on the short end of a 46-6 score. Murphy's only score came in the third quar- ter after a 77-yard sustained drive, in which Howell, Crigler, Spikes, and Hyde, who made the touchdown, alternated carrying the ball. Defensively, Murphy had as stars Kopf, Shipp, and Spikes; on offense, Hyde and Spikes. One reason for the Panther's poor offensive show was the loss of Glen Barlow and Irving Jordan, who were out with injuries. For Biloxi, Tony Pitalo stood out, scoring three touchdowns and ripping the Panther line time and again with powerful plunges. Ending their season with the traditional Thanksgiving game against U. M. S., the Pan- thers played a great game and won 6-0, to throw the struggle for the city championship into a three-way tie. The Panther score came in the fourth quar- ter when Jordan took the ball five straight times and covered 55 yards, going over on a 14-yard jaunt off tackle. This proved to be the only sustained drive of the game. Only once did Wright's penetrate the Murphy 20-yard line, and were there for only one play, being thrown back to the 36-yard line on the next one. On Murphy's line Van Hook, Kopf, and Shipp stood out, while in the backfield Jordan was the star. Page Seventy-nine aKKOBM Harmon. Potor. Torroll; 30-yd. — Crigler. Hudson. Van Goal Lino—Barlow. Bill Stanford Despite a green team Murphy showed fine form in taking its first three games, downing Fairhope 23-15, Frisco City 24-23. and Robertsdale 33-19. This winning streak was snapped, however, by four consecutive setbacks at the hands of Jackson, Pensacola, McGill, and Evergreen. With Corky Brimm leading the offensive with 22 points, the Goaldiggers bounded back to stop U. M. S. 40-16. Seeking vengeance for an earlier defeat at the hands of Jackson, the Panthers fought their way to an overwhelming 41-21 win. Sinclair Elizondo Next on Murphy's vengeance list was Pensacola. Jimmie Sinclair looped in 25 points to lead his teammates to a 52-36 win. The Panthers overcame a surprisingly strong U. M. S. aggrega- tion to take its second intra-city contest, 55-37. The Goaldiggers suffered their second defeat at the hands of the Mc- Gill Yellowjackets, but only after a hard scrap were the Panthers subdued 38-12. Brimm and Sinclair paced the Murphy basketeers to an overwhelm- ing victory over the strong Flora la hoopsters to the tune of 48-29. Clin© Beasley Van Hook Murphy Spillman Hubbard Jones Fresh from the Florala win the Mur- phians subdued a weaker Frisco City aggregation for the second time, 49-27. Murphy lost its third game to the more experienced McGill Five by the heart- breaking score of 34-32. From then on the Panthers experienced little trouble in finishing the season, crushing G. C. M. A. 79-44. U. M. S. 59-24, Jackson 59- 19. and Evergreen 66-44. Murphy ended the regular season with a record of thirteen games won and six games lost. In the district tournament Murphy trounced Wallace 71-27, Robertsdale 41-28, T. R. Miller 53-24, and Monroe- ville 41-21, but lost a tight game to Mc- Gill 17-21. In the state tournament the golden hoopsters from Murhpy showed fine form in taking second place. The Pan- thers took this honor by virtue of their win over Tallassee, Boaz, and Hamil- ton. In addition to the Panthers taking second place glory, Corky Brimm, forward, and Jimmie Sinclair, center, were chosen All-State. Brimm makes two more points Top left: Basketball Manager —Sand .
