After slowly gaining momentum through experience on the field and Coach Pugh's constant verbal barrage in practice. Murphy licked the Cadets of U.M.S. 19-0, threatened to tie McGill for the City Championship, and ended the sea- son by beating Wrights 18-6. Such rapid improvement of a severely handicapped team, by in- experience, a new system of play- ing under a new coach, and by numerous other trivial matters, was due to the persistent coaching and systematic calisthenics of Coach Harvey Pugh and his able assistant. Coach Casimir Newdome. The first four games can be classi- fied as the period of learning how to play, learning the new shifts, and getting the feel of the game. The G.C.M.A. game was the turning point of the season, the decisive game in which Murphy scored for the first time. The remaining games show just what the Panthers had in them — the will to win. Murphy - Pascagoula The Murphy - Pascagoula game will be remembered for the splendid defense exhibited by the Pantherian eleven in the fourth period on the 2- yard line, where, on the verge of ex- haustion, the Murphy Panthers held the Pascagoula crowd for three downs. The Pascagoula boys handed the ball over to the Blue and Gold clad boys who chose to punt rather than to run. There wasn't any Plunge by Murphy through Moss Point's line for one yard! 83 Off-tackl« play by Moss Point stopped! single hero of this play; the whole team was the hero, particularly the lines-men. The game was played mainly in Murphy's territory. Cal- houn displayed a neat kick that failed twice because of teammates blocking the way. Others who de- serve credit for the first game are: Fell, Little, Erhardt, and McLeod. Murphy - McGill This was the first time the Jackets of McGill had beaten Murphy since 1940. Responsible for every touch- down made was Burke Strong, a thorn in Murphy's side. During this game Dick Little, Murphy's Captain, was hurt in a play in which McGill proved to be off sides. Standouts were: Little, Calhoun, Erhardt, Haw- kins, and Fell. Murphy - Moss Point Moss Point with driving power and blocking skill to their merits pushed down the field to score three times. Their victory was a terrestial one which they incurred by little use of passes. Highest in accomplish- ments was Erhardt's blocking of Blanchard's placement. Moss Point made 14 downs to Murphy's 5. Dick Calhoun and Gene Fell took the laurels with Collier and Erhardt giving fine support. Murphy - Pensacola The Murphy-Pensacola is the fourth and last in the series of score- less games which made Thomas Paine's famous quotation enter into the life of Murphy Hi. ''These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot shrink from the service of their ....! What matters if whether 84 the last word be country, school, or what have you? The fact remains that the number of tickets bought last year when Murphy was winning had decreased this year. Dick Little didn't play in this game because he was hurt. Outstanding player was Richard Calhoun, who not only did most of the tackling but carried the ball most of the time. Murphy - G.C.M.A. The few loyals who arrived at Gulfport yelled their lungs out when Robert Erhardt made Murphy's first touchdown. Coach Pugh shook hands with Coach Huckabee, former coach at M.H.S., after this climatical game ended. Murphy • Lanier The ball rolling, Murphy was gathering punch with every game. It looked like sure victory when an exchange of punts left Lanier deep in her own territory, doomed to an inevitable set back. Lanier returned after the quarter puffing like a bull who had just been enraged by the pricking of swords. It was during the third quarter that the Poets scored 13 points. Also during the quarter Joe Hawkins made the second sea- sonal touchdown, much to the joy of the tonsil-wobbling audience's de- light. Murphy - Wrights Never was a victory more ap- preciated. more deserved, or harder earned. First down of this first victory was performed by expedient Fell, who also made the only conversion of the season. Two Down! On® Up! and G«no Fell wants to go. 85 End Sweep by Murphy Man brings gain against U.M.S. Dick Little, that star-crossed foot- ball captain, had been injured in nearly every game in which he par- ticipated. However, Dick came out determined to make up for every game he had missed— .. . Dick just missed a pass .in the end zone. Fell made the longest run of the season, 88 yards which resulted in a score. Then the limelight flashed on Calhoun where it remained after he had made two touchdowns, one en- tailing a 40 yard run, the other a line buck. The white football along with Sonny Raines, who went in for the first time since his accident in the beginning of the season, were unusual eccentricities of this game. The following persons' shields shown brightly: Gene Fell, Joe Haw- kins, Buddy Collier, Sammy Vracha- lus, John Lowe, Bobby Erhardt, Sam Armistead, M a b o n Pugh, and Jimmy Davis. Murphy - McGill A frightened McGill hobbled away with the city championship after having their pants scored off by the Panthers who fought tooth and nail to tie the City Champion- ship. The odds were against them, as Murphy students gave up their usual seats to sit in the eastern grandstands. Had the hidden ball trick been unsuccessful, Murphy would have won. P.S. Confidentially don't blame the football players, because there hasn't been an honest spectator who followed the ball completely. It's admitted Murphy was sucked in while Calametti made the touch- down. 86 Murphy - Wrights Touchdowns were made by Murphy's Armistead, Calhoun, and Davis; Wright's Skipper. A1 Brown- ing recovered when Cartier fumbled on his own 26, turning to receive a punt. After a series of punts Cal- houn passed to Armistead for the first score. Conversion failed. Later in the period Armistead recovered a practically blocked punt on the Cadets' 34-yard line. On the next play, Calhoun ran 45 yards through the line. Again the try for the extra point was unsuccessful. A last minute touchdown in the final period was made by Jimmy Davis who re- ceived a pass from Gene Fell. Once more no extra point. Note to next year's coach: Put those boys to work on that conversion business. Hawkins advanced six yards every time he got the ball. The entire school salutes the team, the coaches, and the water boys, one of whom was drafted to- ward the end of the season Monk Holland. Browning helps to make tackle. 87 1. Murphy TERPSICHOREAN ART Modem dancing is a recent innovation into the physical education program, beginning in 1940 under the leadership of Mrs. Eleanor Smith Tuthill. From a small group of 6 or 8 girls, meeting only one period a day, the classes have increased in number and enroll- ment. Membership in the classes is obtained only by successful try-outs in simple rhythmic steps and patterns. All dance and rhythm compositions are originated with and worked out by the girls in the classes, to the accom- paniment of drum beats or recordings. Archery, badminton and table tennis are the favorite recreational sports in the physical education classes, particularly the elective class. Basketball and softball continue to hold their long-established lead in the teams sport groups while social dancing is a loudly ac- claimed class favorite. Benefits derived from these activities, such as coordination of move- ment, better carriage, are likewise given special attention. Using apparatus equipment and exercise helps develop balance and co-ordina- tion, while poise and self-confidence are achieved through training. 1. What's up? 2. Guarding the home front. 3. The Four Arts Club” officers automatically became of- ficers of the MURPHY THESPIAN, and the president this year is Weesie Durant. She is assisted by Dan Thompson as Vice- President and Otha Powell as Secretary and Treasurer. Our one and only John Holland serves as Historian. Mrs. Hamil is now chief adviser on all problems, while to Miss Lois Jean Fitzsimmons falls THESPIAN! A name which whispers the secrets of backstage, of curtains, and of disaster! Can't you see Miss Fitz rush- ing around backstage nailing up fallen flats and collecting strayed properties, and at the same time holding the book, call- ing out forgotten lines to Murphy's aspir- ing young actors? 112 the job of directing. It is Miss Fitz's first year in the position, and her ability has been demonstrated in the plays she has presented. The stage crew, under the able direction of Mr. Bridgewater, has a big part in making the play a success, be- cause they paint the scenery, build the props, and all important — pull the cur- tain. Membership in the Four Arts Club” is gained by try-out in the freshman year. At this time, the auditorium is filled with frightened freshmen speaking their pieces” to the judges, who are selected by Miss Fitzsimmons. A successful try- out entitles you to four years in the Players” that give you hours of fun. From out of the Four Arts Club” casts for the plays given each year are also selected by try-out. The chosen few work (and play) long and hard at rehearsals, and when the big night is over, they go home with their laurels, tired and triumphant. The complete staff of production in- cludes such persons as Mr. Venman, who has charge of tickets; Mr. Houser, who is responsible for getting the tickets and the programs printed; Mrs. Poole, who put the Usher Club on duty; and Miss Kennedy and Mr. Stookey, who are responsible for the artistic and musical side of the play. Along with Miss Fitzsimmons and the players, these teachers all co-operate in making the play go over. They suc- ceed, too. Left page: (Top) Otha Powell. The scene of the play is laid in the town of Hortonville near an army camp. The plot centers around what happens when Janie Colburn, sixteen year old daughter of a newspaper editor, meets Dick, smooth soldier son of her mother's best friend, the widowed Mrs. Lawrence. Janie's father is the worrying type and is definitely opposed to young girls of the high school set entertaining soldiers. When Janie and Dick and a few of their friends get together for a little innocent fun while their elders are dining at the Coun- try Club, the party gets out of hand. Two hundred soldiers arrive on the scene just in time to wreck the house before the en- raged Mr. Colburn returns. The plot is complicated to a degree by Janie's seven year old sister, Elsbeth, an enterprising child with an inventive mind and a genius for making a nuisance of herself. But Janie has troubles besides family ones because Scooper Nolan, her platter-bug admirer, runs away to join the Air Corps when she jilts him for the more sophisticated soldiers. Mr. Van Brunt, business partner of Mr. Colburn, and Mrs. Lawrence provide the love element among the grown-ups. The giggling Bernadine, who gets chased all over the Colburn house by her soldier flame, Dead-pan Hackett, and the pert Paula, who is determined to remain faith- ful to her sailor overseas, play important parts as Janie's chief cohorts in trouble. When the curtain falls, Janie has found favor once again with her family because Matthew Reardon of the Washington priority board promises her father a long- desired printing press in view of the fact that Janie has so patriotically provided amusement for the soldiers. Scooper, too young to enlist, has returned, and life has gone back to a questionable normalcy for the Colburns. The cast, who played to three capacity crowds in Murphy's auditorium, was as follows: Mr. Colburn, John Holland; Mrs. Col- burn, Mary Louise Durant and Sara Ann Stewart; Janie, Sally Tibor and Marilyn Busch; Elsbeth, Jacqueline Doggette; Mr. Van Brunt, Dan Thompson; Mrs. Law- rence, Jane Bullock; Bemadine, Ann Pake and Marion Griffin; Dick, Vernon Nelson; Scooper, Otha Powell; Paula, Hazel Jan- sen.
