Phillips, A.B., M.A., Principal Mr. Sidney C. Phillips It may be his name on a pass card; it may be his voice over the address system; or it may be his ready smile to everyone he meets. Whatever it is, however small it is, it gives you and me and all Murphy’s citizens the genuine friendliness, sincerity, unpretentiousness, and fairness of Mr. Sidney C. Phillips, our principal, who has made us feel his great belief in us and the work we are all trying to accomplish at Murphy High School. by Mrs. Ruth Roach Clark Sponsor of Mid-Year Seniors Miss Mac Sanes Not for herself does that great heart of Miss Mae Eanes pour out is service year after year as the beloved assistant principal of Murphy High School, but for the boys and girls, and for the school itself. Her dynamic energy and forceful personality are being spent unstintingly, gladly, in work that is entirely free from expectation of reward. There are times, we know, when the returns from her great efforts are more than satisfying to her soul; there are other times when there are no returns. We do not know the score—she only knows that; but we do know and say, “How she plays the game!” Mrs. Ruth Roach Clark Sponsor of Mid-Year Seniors Mrs. H. L. MURPHY 26—McGILL 0 Murphy’s Golden- Panthers got off to a flying start in their first game for the 1943 football season by taking an inexperienced McGill team for a 26 to 0 ride. The Panthers scored early in the first quarter when Gate Nelson intercepted a partially blocked McGill pass and ran for a touch- down. The conversion was missed and the Panthers kicked to McGill, who fumbled; Murphy recovered and quickly pushed over a second touchdown on a pass from Irvin Jordan to Ralph Pyburn. They scored again in the third quarter after they had driven deep into McGill territory. This time it was David De Gruy, who did the honors. The final Panther tally came in the third quarter with another Jordan to Pyburn pass. At no time in the game did Mc- Gill threaten the Panthers serious- ly and they were never able to get within 20 yards of the Panther goal. For Murphy it was Pyburn, Theris, Nelson, Holloway and Bar- bour, who stood out in the line, with Jordon, McDavid, and De Gruy showing well in the back- field. In the McGill ranks it was Chris Calmetti, Paul Thompson, Lettermen: Balzli Barbour, l oone, Calhoun First U.M.S. — Murphy, 6 - U.M.S., 0. and Tom Nonnemaker who con- sistently were in on the tackles, with Burke Strong doing a swell job of backing up and Carl Hen- dirckson sparking the Yellow Jac- ket offensive. MURPHY 19— PASCA- GOULA 0 The Murphy High Football Team kept their record clean by downing a tough Pascagoula club 19 toO in Pascagoula. The game was an exceptionally rough one with Holloway getting knocked out and Pyburn spraining his ankle. An intercepted pass in the first quarter set up Murphy's opening tally and from then on the Panthers had their way, rolling up two more touchdowns and bring- ing home the bacon for the second straight time. MURPHY 40—U.M.S. 0 The Murphy Panthers took a second notch in their city cham- pionship belt as they rolled over a helpless U. M. S. team 40 to 0. The Murphy team scored in all four quarters and even found time to score twice in the second and fourth quarters. De Gruy called a nice game from quarter back and the Murphy offensive worked as smoothly as a Big Ben Alarm Clock; while on the defense the Panther line did a bang up job of Lettermen: De Gruy, Everett, Holloway, Hooper bottling up Tom Martin, Wright’s all star halfback. Scoring touch- downs for Murphy were Howell, Jordon, McDavid, De Gruy, and Stevens. These, together with Ed Simmes, did most of our ground gaining. The entire first and second string lines played well with Nel- son, Theris, Pyburn, and Walton all playing spectacularly. Inciden- tally this was our third straight scoreless game. MURPHY 0—MOSS POINT 2 Murphy’s Panthers were tumbl- ed from the undefeated ranks by a 2 to nothing count at the hands of a hard charging Moss Point Eleven. Murphy kicked to Moss Point, who proceeded to march down the field until Irvin Jordan snatched an opportune fumble out of the air and raced for a score, only to have it called back because it had struck the ground. From then on it was a tight battle, with Moss Point hav- ing a slight edge until in the third quarter Junior White blocked Jor- don’s punt and Jordon fell on the ball in the end zone for a safety, which two points were the victory margin. Theris, DeGruy, and Jordan played well for Murphy, with Fag- Lettermen: Howell, Jones, Jordan, Little Jordon Fakes to Howell, Making Gain, Aided by DeGruy’s Blocking. y- gard and White standing out for the victors. MURPHY 19— PENSA- COLA 0 Murphy journeyed to Pensacola where the team avenged a 14 to 7 defeat handed them last year by the Tigers, defeating an inferior P. H. S. team 19 to 0. Murphy scored in the second quarter after driving deep into Pensacola territory and held a 7 to 0 lead at the half. Upon their re- turn in the third quarter Murphy really went to work and pushed across two more touchdowns, los- ing a third when a holding penalty pushed them from the Pensacola goal line. In winning this game Murphy rolled up 14 first downs and partly erased the memory of last week’s 2 to 0 loss at the hands of Moss Point. Without a doubt, Murphy’s outstanding player and the most outstanding player on the field was Pearley Howell, who played a brilliant game at full back. MURPHY 13—G.C.M.A. 0 In the first night football game of the year, the Murphy Panthers not only trounced but also out- played a heavier and older G.C.- M.A. team. Murphy did not waste any time in proving they were out to win by scoring the first time Lettermen: McDavid, McGehee, May, Nelson McGill-Jordon, Gains 66 Yds., Leaves String of McGill Tacklers in His Wake they were in possession of the ball with a beautiful run by Roger Stevens. The cadets from Gulf Coast were completely manhandled during the first half, with one Murphy drive being stopped on the ten and another good for the sec- ond tally and again it was Stevens who carried the mail. The second half was a seesaw affair with neither team scoring. And the final scoreboard read Murphy 13, Gulf Coast 0, with a great share of the victory going to Stevens and Howell in the backfield and May and Walton in the line. This game makes the Murphy record stand at five wins against one loss. The Panthers have scor- ed the lump total of 117 points in six games against 2 for the opposi- tion, and is yet to have their goal line crossed! We think that is quite a record and we take our hats off to the team. MURPHY 19—SIDNEY LANIER 0 Well we (meaning the team of course) finally defeated Sidney I.anier. As a matter of fact, Mur- phy not only defeated, but also shut out the Montgomery team by a 19 to 0 score. The Panthers tallied two touchdowns in the first quarter with De Gruy crossing the Poet’s goal for the first tally and a Jordan to Barbour pass good for the second. The first tally would have been sufficient for victory because Murphy’s stout line led by Theris and Pyburn held the Poets in check for the full four quarters and kept Murphy’s goal line from being crossed, but Murphy, who has usually come out on the short end of the score, added insult to injury by scoring another and then another touchdown on the hapless Montgomery team. Without a doubt the highlight of the game came in the third quarter when Roger Stevens took the snap from center on the Murphy 27 and raced fi6 yards to the Poet 5. From there Pearlie Howell took over and put the game on ice with Murphy’s third touchdown. MURPHY 37—McGILL 6 With the city championship at stake the Murphy Panthers took the field against the McGill Yel- low Jackets. When the final dust of battle had cleared, the score- board read Murphy 37, McGill 6, and two happy football teams left the playing field. Murphy, happy because of the city championship they had just won; and McGill, happy because they had scored the first touchdown of the season against the hard charging Murphy line. Now for the scoring of Murphy: Lettermen: Robinson, Simms, Stevens, Theris the Panthers started their rout in the first quarter, when Pearlie Howell after sparking the first Panther drive to the McGill 27, took the snap from center and raced across the Jacket’s goal. The Panthers struck twice in the second quarter with Watts crashing the McGill line after a sustained drive of 35 yards for the first tally and Jordan intercepting a McGill pass and racing 66 yards to the McGill two, from whence Jordan bucked over for the Panther’s third tally. In the third and fourth quarters, Murphy’s second string playeJ most of the time and covered themselves with glory by driving 50 yards for the fifth Panther tally, after the first team had scored the fourth Panther touch- down early in the third quarter. The final Panther tally come on a pass from Jordan to Stevens. Late in the fourth quarter, a determined McGill team ripped through the Panther’s second string until they reached the Mur- phy 15, and Coach Huckabee sent the first string racing in; how- ever, McGill was determined to save their face and did so by scor- ing the first touchdown scored on the Panthers in the 1943 season on a brilliant end around by John Calmetti, end and captain of the McGill team. Well, that wound up the scoring, the city championship, and Mur- phys’ record of not having their goal line crossed. To pick out any individual stars would be difficult because the entire Murphy team covered itself with glory. MURPHY 18—U.M.S. 0 Murphy wound up it’s 1943 football season with an 18 to noth- ing victory over a hard fighting U. M. S. team. The U.M.S. team, which had earlier lost forty to nothing to the Panthers, surprised almost 12,000 spectators by their stubborn re- sistance which held the Panthers to only three touchdowns. Murphy scored her first touch- down in the second quarter when Pyburn blocked a U.M.S. punt and Gate Nelson fell on the ball in the end zone. The conversion was blocked. The second Panther touchdown was made by De Gruy after a Panther drive led by Stevens had carried deep into U.M.S. territory. The third and last touchdown came in the last quarter on a six yard run after the “Jeep Theris Special’’ had set up the score. Jordan and Stevens stood out for Murphy in the backfield, while Pyburn, Theris, Nelson and May stood out in the line. Lettermen: Walton, Watts, Rhodey, Van Cleve Row 1: Mitr. Rhodey. Hooper, Pyburo. MURPHY HIGH BASKETBALL SEASON 1943-44 Well, Murphy High School has finished another Basketball season. And what a season! Nineteen wins against two losses! That ought to be a pretty good record in any coach’s book. A great share of credit must go to Coach Casimir P. Newdome, who did a swell job and who carried his team on to a suc- cessful finish, after having lost such outstanding players as Jim- my Davis, David De Gruy, and Billy Theris, because of the armed forces, graduation, and ineligibil- ity. Murphy opened the 1943-44 sea- son by defeating Robertsdale 23 to King—Kunzman 17, with Calhoun as high point man. Next came Moss Point and Jimmy Davis ran wild scoring 27 points as Goaldiggers won 50 to 15. The third Murphy victim was McGill to the tune of 32 to 19. Number four was U.M.S. by a 37 to 19 count. Davis of Murphy and Hancock of U.M.S. were the lead- ing scorers. Victim number five was Pensacola and the Murphy fans got a real scare as Murphy won 31 to 30. With Calhoun and Schnell leading the scoring Mur- phy made it six in a row by de- feating McGill 47 to 27. Victim number seven was Moss Point by Davis Makes Foul Shot a 43 to 26 score. Led by Calhoun and Kunzman the goaldiggers made it eight in a row defeating U.M.S. 45 to 31. Murphy took number nine at the expense of McGill to a 38 to 30 tune. Victory number ten was wrung from the hands of U.M.S. 45 to 35 with King and Balzi, the leading scor- ers. Victory number 11 came from Robertsdale as Murphy chalked up a 51 to 37 win as Kunzman scored 20 points. Number 12 came from McGill in a close shave affair, 28 to 27. Number 13 from U.M.S. 42 to 29. The old jink of thirteen proved too much for the Goaldiggers and they dropped their first game of the season to Pensacola by a 37 to 30 margin. Murphy then pro- ceeded to finish out their season by defeating McGill and U.M.S., the former by 35 to 31 score and the latter by a 53 to 36 count. Next came the District Tourna- ment with Goaldiggers carrying off the crown. Murphy won the Championship by defeating Fruit- dale 59 to 18, Flomaton 75 to 8, Frisco City 26 to 24, and U.M.S. 33 to 28. Next in order was the State Tournament. Murphy lost to Rock- ford 45 to 46. That wound up the 43-44 season which was the most successful since 1938 when the Goaldiggers won 20 and only lost 1. Schnell Fights For Two Points Schnell—Stevens UBaiefcall 1913 CITY CHAMPIONS Due to the lateness of the baseball season the Mohian in previous years has been unable to include baseball in it’s annual sports roundup and as a result many a stellar star of the diamond has gone un- mentioned even in the school annual. However we feel that as important a sport as baseball, which is as much a part of an American High School as the English department or the Math department, should not go unmentioned even if we have to give a resume of last year’s season. Murphy under the able coaching of Casmir P. Newdome took off the city hon- ors in 1943 by winning eight out of nine games. Hut now for a brief summary of the games. Murphy got off to a bad start against U.M.S.. losing five to six. The pitchers were Stevens and Rowell for Murphy and Martin for U.M.S Martin was credited with the win and Rowell with the loss. Led by Captain Pete Milne who hit four for four and scored four runs for a per- fect dav at the plate, the Panthers bounced back to’ defeat the U.M.S. cadets twelve to nine. Erhardt was credited with the win and Martin with the loss. For the second straight time Murphy de- feated U.M.S. with Erhardt pitching. Mur- phy shut out U.M.S. three to nothing. Martin was the losing pitcher. Murphy defeated the Yellow jackets of McGill ten to nine winning in the last of the seventh, when Milne stole home. Wise- man was credited with the victory. Murphy made it two in a row over Mc- Gill defeating the Jackets nine to two. Stevens got the win and Jones the loss. Murphy made it five in a row defeating U.M.S. six to five. Wiseman was the win- ning moundsman and Martin the loser. A1 Browning led the Panthers at the plate with two hits including one double out of three trips to the plate. With Lonny Sims and Roger Stevens pitching five hit ball Murphy defeated Mc- Gill eight to two. Milne led the Panthers at the plate with two triples and a double out of four trips to the plate. Sims was credited with the win. The Panthers behind the able pitching of Hollis Wiseman defeated McGill for the second straight time by a ten to nine mar- gin. Stevens and Milne hit homers tor the victors. Murphy defeated U.M.S. twice to wind up her 1943 season. The first time the score was twenty-one to ten, and tne sec- ond fourteen to eight. In both games Milne was outstanding. Seated: (left to right) Brown. Coleman. Siim.% Erhardt, Burk- ett. Nurse. Balzli. A1 Brown- ing. Joe Browning. Day. San- der .
