On the field, the grand archway and backdrops stood decorat- ed with soft white clouds and twinkling stars on the light blue. Regally the MHS March- ing Bnd lined up on both sides of the heavenly gateway along with the majorettes who held brightly colored balloons. The flag corps formed an hon- or guard for the court atten- dents to walk through on the way to the Arch. Then, under the direction of Mr. Steve Holcomb, the band began to play this year's theme for Homecoming, Heaven In Your Eyes, as 44 HOMECOMING each girl and her escort were introduced, followed by Super- intendent Roy Pipes and last year's queen Gina Taylor, and the crownbearers. Tension mounted; all was qui- et. Then, the announcer's voice boomed over the loud speaker, ... and now for the moment we've all been waiting for. The 1986-87 Homecoming Queen is ... — drumroll, symbol crash — ... Miss Donna Tiptonl The balloons were released; spectators cheered and ap- plauded as Donna recieved her crown, the traditional bouquet of roses and kiss from Mr. Pipes . . . The Bull- dogs wiped out all their op- ponents. Murphy was un- stoppable in the regular season, finishing with a re- cord of 10-0, the Smoky Mountain Conference Championship for the sec- ond straight year, and a berth in the State playoffs. The first victims in the play- offs were the Allegheny Trojans. The Trojans did manage to score more points against the Bull- dogs than anyone else all season — eight whole points! The Dogs' next opponent was Rosman. Murphy avenged last year's playoff loss against the Tigers with an awe-inspiring 42-7 victory. Murphy's toughest game of the year awaited them when Hendersonville came to town. However the Dogs could not be stopped and came out with a 14-7 win. After Hendersonville, Mur- phy rolled over Clarkton and then headed to the state championship game against Tabor City. The Dogs would not be de- nied the State Champion- ship, and the Devils had to settle for second. Murphy won 27-3. For the first time since the '74- 75 season the Murphy Bulldogs are State Champions. FOOTBALL 55 56 Senior The beginning of football prac- tice this past year meant to the fourteen senior Dogs, the begin- ning of their last season as teammates. They were deter- mined to prove that the class of '87 had what it took to lead the Dogs to the State Champion- ship. The senior-led Dogs domi- nated the opposition. The se- niors of this team will be remembered at Murphy for many years. They led 86-87 Murphy Bulldogs to the NC State 1A Championship. 57 Gentry Gaither Watson Sursavage Junior Varsity Football first Row: David Parley, Daniel Edmonds, Jimmy West, Shannon Burrell, Chris Blount, Scott Hayden, Claude Lidseen, John Smith, Larry Shope. At the begin- ning of the school year everyone in- dulged in watching Murphy's football team annihilate their opponents. We watched for 15 games as others fell one by one until the Dogs were State Champs.” Bon Jovi went to the top of the charts with their album Slippery When Wet.” Max head- room helped Coca-Cola become it” again as Coke clothes were worn by everyone. Later in the year MHS had its first wrestling team, led by Coach Haney. The wrestlers finished second in the conference. Mew York had a great year in sports with the Mets win- ning the World Series and the Giants winning the Super Bowl. America's yacht, the Stars and Stripes, brought back the America's Cup restoring it to its rightful place in the Mew York Yacht Club. Washington was rocked by the Iran Arms scandle. Murphy students will never forget the past school Year. It was one of great hap- penings, local and national. Clothes were unconventional and daring this year. We wore things that years ago we would have laughed at. Everyone got into the long Jams” — even the boys who grew up in only blue jeans. Sunglasses and Hawaiian shirts were essential. On the girls, tight fitting stirrup pants extended under shirts with tails or long sweat- ers. On their feet were black or elfish boots. Football and school rep- resentatives clothes were donned by everyone. A shirt, sweatshirt, hat, or ring boasting our State Champion football boys was a mustl Denim in all shades and shapes was popular . . . ripped, patched, dyed, and bleached. Gotcha, Coca-Cola, Ree- bok. Guess, Swatch, Ocean Pacific, I.O.U., Aigner, Polo, Levi, and Hang Ten were popular brand names. Swatches” — as many as possible — replaced the conventional watch. Denim overhalls and turtlenecks made a comeback. Socks creeped up on the outside of pants. Long coats were bad.” Rhinestones and big pieces of jewelry decorated the la- dies. Gold and silver no longer had to be real. Big bows could be seen in all the girls' hair. Buttons sported favor- ite sayings. Rubber bracelets and paisley were in and out. Athletes and non-athletes, alike, wore hi-tops. The button down shirts were in, as al- ways, on the guys. They weren't ashamed to dress up now and then, though. Short lived were the fads of ear-muffs and eraser razor scars. Ca- mofiage pants and big army coats were worthy of activities besides hunting and combat. The Top Gun” look in flight jackets was very hot. The key was individualism: Showing one's own style was the most impor- tantl by Brook Davis Moments At MHS In 86- 87 The school year began on Aug. 25 With It, a number of new addi- tions were present at MHS . Mrs. England. Ms. May. Mr. Haney. Mrs. Swain, and Mr. Pipes were added to the faculty ... A record number of seven exchange students began their new school year here . . . The football team ended the year with a perfect record, and the State 1-A Championship . The PEP rallies were livened up by the rockin' mu- sic of the stage band . . . Clubs were no longer allowed to meet dur- ing school hours . . . Two college courses. World Civilization and Col- lege English, were offered for Se- niors ... A new scoreboard, was installed in the gym ... In the first year of wrestling, the team finished second in their conference . . . The junior Tom Wat sales totaled over $9,500.00 . . . The Senior maga- zine sales totaled $4,143.50 . . . The track needed some repairs, so the athletes sold candy bars to raise money . . . Donna Tipton was crowned Homecoming Queen 27 students planned to go to En- gland . . The varsity boys basket- ball came off the winners of the X- Mas Tournaments . In volleyball, the varsity finished second in con- ference, and the J.V. finished first Several days of school were missed because of snow ... A big question was, Who was doing the vandalism to the cars in the Parking Lot A $600 reward was of- fered for anyone who had informa- tion concerning this As the presses began rolling, a science fair was being scheduled for Eeb. 19 The Academic Olympics at STC were to be held on April 19th. — Lea Graham Remember When . . . Remember when . . . Your mom said not to make faces or your face would freeze; Stan's hair caught on fire; the man of everyone's life was Stretch Armstrong; girls loved Lem- on Twist; baby dolls couldn't talk; Lisa Palmer decked Amy Dockery; Dwayne Wilson and Bryan White had hair; everyone was wearing braces; our football team never won; going to the bowling alley was the thing to do; people wore watch- es that were readable; school was fun; people didn't care about brand names; Mr. Franklin was going to take his class on a field trip to Egypt; everyone's heros were Bat- man and Robin; Cartoons were fun to watch; Boyfriends were forever; people didn't cheat; friends didn't lie; no one started rumors; Coke wasn't IT ; the GAIT Club went to the Space Center; the Peachtree Bunch went to Washington, D.C.; when we only had six classes; school wasn't strict; there was no hall passes; All the Saturday night Midget Mite Basketball games; Brook was Prince; Greta beat up D.J.; band went to the World's Fair? — Seems only yesterday we were Freshmen.
