Back in the heat of July — all the sweat, hills, updowns, sprints, and “pep talks”. The ’84 Bulldog team went into the season with alot of talent. Think of all the spec- tacular moments that came alive when this team hit the field. From the breathtaking catches of Tony, Leon, Bill, and Jeff to the somewhat magi- cal throwing arm of David Kincaid. From the consistent kicking of Steve and David Thompson, to the powerful running of D.J., Terry, and Rob- ert. The dependability of “Big E”, Louis. Tom, and Gary to stop their man and the awesome defensive and offensive lines. Who could forget Robert’s breakaway run at Sylva, Scott Corn- well’s injury with the disheartening tie at Robbins- ville, the Homecoming romp over Andrews, or the spectacular pass reception play by David to Tony at Sylva. There is no way to recount all the glorious moments of the ’84 year. This team will live on in the hearts of many for a long time to come. The team itself was speflal. There was a certain bond only theu 6harea that kept them close. There was nothing quite like the feeling of wearing that uniform — K stood for something — it stood for Heroes. Youfig -men who were worked hard by their coacKes, praised by their fans, and loved by their schgoJ. Remember all these things when you look Kick on the year — the friendships you gained, the courag you dis- played, the tear jfriat fe . but above air always carry with gpu the Pride of being h 1984 MHS football player. now 1 — DejPck Rohmeyer. JV DOGS A 6-1 record, 148 points scored, shut- ting out five teams, averaging 21 points per game — almost a perfect season. Statistics like these are usually attached to champions and this case is no excep- tion. The JV football team started out the season with a new coach and a lot of young eager players. No one expected great things from these boys, but out- standing football was what they deliv- ered. Their record was one of the finest showings by a JV team in many years. The winning tradition truly began here with this group of extraordinary young men. It does to the MHS volley- ball team, because when you say winners you’re re- ferring to them. They made the floor come alive with action. Every game played was played with strength and perserverence from the strong re- bounding of Danny and Buck to the out- side finesse of Patrick and Leon, and the strong leadership of Tony and David. Coach Shields had much to do to make his team into a strong competitor. It took a lot of work and cooperation, but Murphy produced a team of “go- getters” who never gave up. When the ’84-’85 boys team is re- membered — Defenders of the Winning Tradition is what will come to mind. Front row: Derrick Rohmeyer, Jeff Swain, Tyrone Nicely, and Chris Wolfe. To the girls that played it seemed more like a celebration than a season. The team made it look so easy, like they had practiced together for an eternity. Los- ing became a rarity and winning com- monplace in their locker room. Under the coaching of Karen Watson and Cissy Bristol, Murphy’s “golden girls” attained the 1 position in the 2- A Conference division. It was not all glory, though. A lot of sweat, sprints, drills, tears, and determination went into making champions out of these athletes. And what champions they were! It was a season that won’t soon be forgotten. Cox, Leon Forrister, Tony Williams, Donna Tipton, and Tonya Wormsely. The 1985 baseball team has a special tradition to maintain. They are known as “one of the best teams in the moun- tains,” always putting out several all conference players, and championship titles. To achieve their goals they had to put in a lot of work to have a fine tuned team. SOFTBALL SPIRIT - MHS STYLE Sprints, batting until your shoulder is sore, sliding in the dirt, catching the ball with the sun in your eyes — all of these things were familiar to the Murphy girl’s softball team. They take us and make us into athletes. Every great force always has a great leader. Murphy’s athletic department boasts alot of “Greats”. Being a coach is not just whistles, yells, and rules. Coaching means dedication to sports, endless hours of planning and strategy, not to mention a crash course in handling teen- agers. It takes a special person to be a coach. A person who is willing to put themselves totally in to making an ath- lete a success, wanting to care enough to push you to be the best you can be. Athletic director, David Gentry has staffed an excellent team of coaches. They are the men and women we look to to lead us, make us strong, push us to our limit and keep pushing. They help us when we falter, fuss when we do not try our hardest, and believe in us when no one else will. They put their faith in us and we, as athletes, in turn put our faith in them. Our coaches are all these things to us, but most of all they are our friends. After the fans go home, the bows are taken, and the champions de- cided they are still there. They have created an image, that every player re- spects and will remember throughout their lives. Murphy’s coaches, past and present, brought about the TRADITION OF WINNING! - they are the only ones who can maintain it.
