After a 2-8 season last year, this new record boosted the team’s pride as well as the pride of the school and the Bulldog fans. This marks the beginning of a new era in Bulldog football. The school backed the Dogs adamantly this year, thus creating a marked improvement in school spirit. Murphy High School is proud of our record this year. Because of their perserverance and determination, the team as a whole, the seniors in particular, and the coaches have made the 1983-84 Bulldog season an outstanding success. DARRELL DECKER. FOOTBALL Under the instruction and guidance of Coach Wayne Watson, Coach Flip Watson, and Coach Dan Channel!, the junior varsity Bulldogs had a competent season. After losing a close game with Franklin by one point, the deter- mined J.V.’s triumphed over Franklin in their second match with a score of 28-7. Their final record was 3-4. Many of the junior varsity players will be joining the varsity squad next year. They should be a definite asset to the team. NO PAIN, NO GAIN The MHS Varsity Girls Basketball Team will remember their 1983-84 season for various reasons. The girls, who were more of a family than just teammates, shared a closeness known by few teams. Their attitude and leadership on and off the court made them respected by all. The girls had confidence in themselves, their coach, and their abilities, making them a team that made MHS proud. Their foresight of winning made the Lady Dogs keep pushing and their effort paid off in the end. The Ladies said many times, Hustle makes it happen!” This year, it happened. 36 Coach Karen Watson Front Row: Lisa Jarrett. Lynn Roberson. Dianna Burrell. Tammy Graves. Tracy Jarrett and quit. Tim Berkey JUMP BALL! The 1983-84 Boy's Varsity basketball season was one of the most memorable. The six seniors head- ing the Bulldog team expressed pride in their school, thus creating a good example for the other team members to follow. They had an insatiable desire to win and put forth great effort in reaching that goal. Each member individually contributed to the team in an unique way. SSfflOK mzAS 1 1983-84 Homecoming Queen HOMECOMING Miss Rae Crawford was the 1983-84 Homecoming Queen of our Murphy High world. She was crowned on September 30, on a wind chilled night, while the melody of “Truly” was being played in the background by the fabulous Murphy High Band. After walking down the royal pathway provided by the Flag Corps, each couple paused under the archway between Cupid's Hearts be- fore taking their positions on the court. A final drum-roll broke the silence awaiting the announcement of who was to be our new homecoming queen. The name of Rae Crawford was finally announced and the roses, crown and the traditional kiss was given to her. Homecoming comes only once a year, but its memories will remain with us as we go our separate ways into worlds unknown. Left to Right, front row: Dana Thompson, Gina Taylor. Rae Crawford. Many of the United States citizens were killed needlessly in foreign affairs, such as the U S peacekeepers, who were blown-up by the suicidal attack on their base, and the American’s who went down in the Korean airline after being shot by the Russians. Michael Jackson took over the music field by winning seven entertainment awards, including the Entertainer of the Year Award, all of which he accepted at the music awards, while having his date. Brooke Shields, at his side. Cabbage Patch dolls, unicorns, and Care Bears were also popular hits. These items sold like crazy, making their manufacturers millions of dollars, and Americans proud owners of these adorable items. American people were also proud of their Olympic team who went to the winter Olmpic in Sarajevo and brought home eight medals. There were new faces seen in the movie business: Mr. T. ET. Tom Cruise. David Hasselhoff. Jennifer Beals, and Ewoks. However, some of the old faces were lost through death. They were Henry Fonda. Jessica Savage. Marty Robins. Slim Pick- ens. Jr. Samples. Princess Grace. Natalie Wood, and Ethel Merman. United States laws became more strict, such as the alcohol law which raised the legal drinking age to 19 and forced harsher punishment on drunk drivers. Schools were also being up-graded by these laws in hopes for a better educational system for the American people. Many states brought back the death penalty for use in brutal crimes to try to cut down on the crime rate in the U.S. All of these laws were enacted in hopes of making Americans safer and more secure in their homes. At Murphy High School, our football team made an outstanding comeback in '84 They were led by head coach. David Gentry. New programs were brought to M.H.S. They included the data processing class, art music class, drama class, the journals in the English classes, and the Science Fair, which was sponsored by the science department The students at M.H.S. showed a large amount of strength when they pulled together to keep our ’’leader’’ in office. A giant Bulldog walked around the school leaving his tracks behind. This Bulldog also got his picture painted in the gym. And over our school we flew a United States flag which was donated by Jamie Clark This flag had once flown proudly over the U.S. Capital. Now we raise it to fly proudly over Murphy High School. Fads such as bandanas tied around the neck. arm. waist, leg. and ankle; big earrings of bright colors; cut-up sweat shirts; short pants of assorted colors; and shoes of all kinds, took the place of many of the Izods at M.H.S. The new symbols were OP’s and Polo’s. Ninety-nine percent of us still wore jeans. The pastime of the students was cruising town, roller skating, and watching soap operas. The soaps” seem to be the topic of everyone’s conversation. Did Roman really kill them? was the question asked from viewing Days of Our Lives.” and Who is the real Grant Puttman? on General Hospital?” was the question from those views. With all these changing fads, pastimes, people, and foreign affairs we made it Through the Year and went on to begin another year to add to our memories. ICWENb
