Coach Steve Spradling The 1980 football team certainly won the respect and admiration of the student body this year. These ath- letes demonstrated the value of dedication, endur- ance, and hard work. Through a season of improve- ment and individual growth, the team has upheld the Bulldog tradition so that we can proudly exclaim, How 'bout them MHS Dogs! 19 bulldog country 20 senior dogs 9 Ifcvvtv The end of the football season is a sad time for all involved, but it is especially hard for these twelve athletes, making up the senior portion of the Murphy High Varsity FootDall Team. The 1980 football sea- son will probably be the last season these twelve seniors will play together They wi never forget the friendships they formed during the time they spent practicing and playing together For the seniors, along with playing to their best abili- ty and contributing 100 percent to the team, comes the responsibility of setting an example for the younger members, as well as keeping the mo- rale up They must possess the power to display leadership, self-discipline, and the stamina to keep fighting when the going gets tough. It was very evident that an twelve of these seniors performed these qualities on an outstanding level, leading to an unforgettable 1980 football season 21 senior dogs 1980 junior varsity Team: 1st ROW-Scott Rogers, Mark May, Quit, Rocky Edwards, Jeff Swain, Kevin Baily, Kent Stiles. Here they received two blue ribbons and a spirit stick. Throughout the year, they put the knowledge they had gained at camp to use, promoting school spirit and pride. When asked what it meant to be a cheerleader, their responses were exciting, enthusiasm, spirit, dedication, challenge, ability, coordination, fun, supporting, pride, and hard work. 27 cheerleaders Pictured from left to right-Front row: Leigh Hendrix. The students do experi- ments and dissections of many kinds. They also learn many formulas which must be memorized and proved. 49 departments math i There are several math courses which students at M.H.S. may take. These include General Math, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Math Analysis. The stu- dents taking math courses start out with a simpler form, but by the time they get to Math Analysis, they get to use all their math intelligence. By the end of the year, the terms sine,” cosine, tangent,” along with hundreds more, are very familiar to them. 50 departments business Some of the common expressions a person might hear from business students are This problem just won't balance! Some of the common expressions the students hear from the busi- ness teachers are: Let's find your mis- takes. “Proofread carefully. or “We'll have dictation speeds of 50, 60, and 70 today. The business classes are a lot of hard work, but students interested in busi- ness can get a good start here at M.H.S. if they will put a little effort behind their work. 51 departments vocations business health occupations home economics vocations distributive education carpentry auto mechanics The courses offered in the Vocational Building are Typing II, Short- hand II, Office Occupations, Home Economics, Carpentry, Distribu- tive Education, Health Occupations, and Auto Mechanics. The tapes can be in- teresting-especially the soap opera part. Learning a foreign lan- guage sure takes time on the part of both the students and the teacher. math and english Mrs. Spradling and Mrs. Sherrill work hard with some of the students to help them prepare for the compentency test. The students work to improve their English, math and reading skills. 54 departments library science Students go to the li- brary for many rea- sons. These reasons range from having to do book reports or term papers to laying out of class. Mrs. Minor teaches Library Science to students. She also keeps a good selec- tion of books and magazines for stu- dents and faculty. Her students help her to maintain an or- derly library. ■ I.V. is taught to help students learn about different job fields. The students I watched films, did classwork, took tests, and did crafts. They also took field i V i trips to local businesses. agriculture The agriculture classes study about different plants and do experimental plantings. They have a greenhouse in which they work. 55 departments physical education The gals and guys at M.H.S. get to start out by keeping fit their freshman year. They begin each period by getting the pleasure of dressing out. Then they get to run laps or do whatever their teacher says, which can range from playing ball to doing exercises to cleaning up the football field. Then once more they get to change clothes to sum up their period of keeping fit. Lucky freshmen!??? driver In Driver's Education a student goes through classroom work be- fore he gets to drive. Diane Rose, and Carol Jean Smith, manager The MHS Varsity Girls Basketball Team will be remembered for many outstanding qualities. The girls had a closeness known by very few teams. They were more like a family than just teammates. Their attitude in facing victory or defeat was an attitude that made MHS proud. Their pride in their school, their team, their teammates, and themselves gave them the ability to stand proud in all aspects of the game. With the guidance of an outstanding coach, the leadership of five seniors, the cooperation of an eleven member team, and the assistance of an efficient manager, the MHS varsity girls' program could only lead to success. The foresight of winning gave the Lady Bulldogs the power to keep pushing, and when the going got tough, the Lady Bulldogs got going! Coach Karen Watson 60 basketbal How do you face the end of many good years? How do you say good-bye without shed- ding many tears? How do you look forward to the future when the past has been such fun? How do you want to go on when our days together are done? Remembering the good and bad of all the times we've shared, makes the task of starting over a little easier to bear. Though our paths may be parted and our times together gone. From the friends we've become, we know we'll never be alone.
