But the meaning differs for each person. To some it means hold that line . To others it suggests go dogs . Although it has been defined in many ways, Siggy-Siggy is the essence of the spirit and teamwork that characterize Murphy High School. As the season began, Murphy was regarded as a Mystery Team. No one was exactly sure what to expect from the Bulldogs. After a short period of time, however, it was obvious what to expect — winning. The Bulldogs had ability, courage, and above all, teamwork. Each player, whether running back or guard, gave his best for the Bulldogs. There was no personal glory involved; it was all for the TEAM. 18 football Bulldog Scoreboard Visitors Home Swain Co. 12 32 Tuscola 27 22 Andrews 6 20 NCSD 20 44 Franklin 7 30 Hayesvllle 0 30 Robbinsville 6 22 Franklin 0 30 Rosman 20 50 Swain Co. There was tension and excitement in the air as if something of importance was about to begin. Suddenly, the stars began to shoot through the air. One huge star beamed brilliantly towards the earth. A UFO seemed to have landed. Anxiously the crowd looked on. The door opened and revealed ten pairs of unidentified objects in human shapes. They moved across the field slowly and stiffly like robots as the MHS Band played the Coronation March from STAR WARS. This 1978-79 Homecoming Court dazzled one and all. After the drum roll ended, which sounded like a sonic boom, the queen was announced. Miss Missi Williams was stupefied when her name rang through the air. After the queen and the court left the field, the star fantasized affair ended. Mrs. Karen Wayman and the Pep Club made this coronation ceremony possible. The first few days were filled with the usual sense of confusion and excitement. There were some new faces at MHS but some treasured old friends had moved away. Changes such as weight, hair, and clothing styles had occured in some individuals. Summer excitements were shared, and planning for future events got underway. Classes settled down into their routines, and, for the most part, schedule changes were completed. Students learned how much they could get away with, and teachers discovered which pupils were going to be the major troublemakers. Football season began, and the cheerleading squad, with the aid of the majorettes, flag girls, and band, conducted pep rallies on Friday afternoons. Parades, car decorating contests. Spirit Week and night time pep rallies were also held. The football squad was composed of experienced players and a few who were adding their skill and spirit for the first time. Entertainment Attendance at the games was high since cheering for the Dogs became the thing to do. The Bulldog team was backed by pride. And no one could have been prouder than first-year Head Coach Mitch Myers when his boys surpassed everyone's expectations but their own and ended the regular season as the Smoky Mountain Conference Champs and the Smoky Mountain 2A Champs. The volleyball team, in its third year, proved that practice, hard work, and concentration could develop a team with winning characteristics. Juniors ordered their rings, and when they arrived, the Class of '80 learned that 80 turns = 1 kiss. During the months of September, October and November, various MHS students were striken by a disease identified as viral meningitis. By late November, however, the disease had run its course. In late October the seventeen new Beta Club members were inducted into the Murphy chapter and were initiated on Halloween. On November 1 and 2, the Junior class became the first class to take the Competency Test, and when the scores were calculated, Cherokee County students had scored higher than the state average. The Senior Superlatives were picked by the graduating class of 1979 during the month of November. All-Conference players and coachers were chosen, and fourteen people at Murphy were included in this selection. The basketball season began with a scrimmage game against Hayesville on November 22, and cheering for the Dogs once again became the pasttime. The basketball teams matched the football teams in excellence, as the boys captured first place in the Conference during regular season play, and the girls were tied for third place. The JV teams also proved their ability and showed promise for the years to come. All Western North Carolina football players were selected, and three MHS students were awarded this honor. Each year 10% of the graduating class is chosen as Who's Who; twelve students were selected in 1979. The Valedictrian, Salutatorian, and ten Junior Marshalls were chosen, and plans for the prom got underway. In March, the Quarterback Club sponsored the annual football banquet. Softball, baseball, and track teams put forth their best efforts to garner more honor for Murphy. Throughout the year new styles, pasttimes, teachers, babies, marriages, and other items were added to Murphy. Boots, straight-leg jeans, fish net scarves, twice pierced ears, stick pins, initials (on everything), unisex fashions, skinny belts, skinny, shiny braclets and necklaces and cowboy hats were the latest fashion. A section of the new highway was opened for public use, and some students began using it for a racetrack. Violence was prevalent as an unusual number of fights and wrecks occured. Hardee's seemed to be the place to be on weekends, as their booths and parking lot were always filled with people under twenty. The disco scene hit Murphy, and several dances sponsored by the Student Council were a big success. Mr. Shields, Mr. Simmonds, Miss Saltz, and Mrs. Setzer began teaching the three R's at Murphy, but Mr. Postell and Mr. Sursavage were seen no more in the halls. Mrs. Snow, Mrs. Watson, and Mrs. Postell added to Murphy's population when three bundles of joy arrived. Book shelves and hall passes appeared in the halls. The tradition of novels for television continued with Centennial. Roots re . . ed to be aired again, and The Sentinel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and American Grafitti were shown for the first time. In the way of serials, Mork Na-noed his way into our hearts. Three's Company became a favorite, as did Diff'rent Strokes. Then later came Brothers and Sisters and Turnabout. Travolta electrified audiences as Grease slid into stardom. Superman was made into a movie for the first time. Up In Smoke blew minds everywhere. Musically speaking, several rock stars pledged profits from songs to the children of UNICEF on a television special . Dolly Parton continued to rock us with her new style. The Blues'Brothers hit the charts with Soul Man. Other big stars in rock and disco were The Village People, Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, the Bee Gees, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. One addition was enjoyed; one was not! 1979's Journalism Department also had something new — Juniors on the staff. The Village People, Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, Earth, Wind and Fire, Rod Stewart and Billy Joel became visitors in everyone's home as their songs played on TV, radio stations and stereos. The prom was held on the first weekend in May, and the performing band was Jet. The night was filled with laughter, joy and a special kind of sadness. On May 20, 1979, the Seniors of Murphy High School walked across the stage and faced the knowledge that they could never go back; they must always go forward. 55 Hill MR. Cheerleaders Being chosen as a cheerleader opened new doors and led the way to new experiences. The times were not always good, but each held a meaning. Learning to work together and trust each other was an Important step forward. Trusting someone totally during a stunt or holding back anger when things went wrong were hard things to do. Giving up dates and trying to make boyfriends understand were equally hard. If not harder. The long hours of practice required discipline, determination, and dedication. The rewards perhaps outweighed the aggravations. The excitement of leading spirited cheers at pep rallies and ball games was something to be remembered long after the noise of the crowd had been forgotten. Throwing miniature footballs at halftime and using up all the magic markers without getting In trouble added to the fun. Close friendships were developed and secrets were shared. These experiences were always accompanied by the knowledge that the BULLDOGS ARE THE BEST. 80 Some hidden stars at M.H.S. this year were the seventeen Golden M Girls. These girls were responsible for various duties throughout the year. Although behind the scene, these workers received many rewards. Perhaps the greatest of these was the feeling of accomplishment which came from knowing that they had done their part to help create a winning spirit. As well as presenting performances during football games, Christmas parades and concerts, various individuals emit their own personal glow. These people contribute their light to the U.T.
