He is held in high esteem by both faculty and students of MHS. DflllFORTH I HIRRIS Danforth Awards are given each year to the boy and girl from the senior class who the faculty feel show the greatest potential for accepting the challenge of leadership in these four-square areas: social, spiritual, academic, and physical. This year's Danforth winners are BELINDA SMART and LEE FERGUSON. 21 HomEcom 13 7 8 Miss Gwen Rose Soft breezes blew while the MHS band played Southern Nights. On this beautiful fall night the 1978 Homecoming Court was introduced to an enthusiastic crowd. Each girl wore a printed antebellum dress and carried a parasol to match. The suspense mounted as each girl paused between the white Georgian columns to be introduced. A hush fell over the stadium, and finally the long awaited moment arrived. Miss Gwen Rose was proclaimed 1978 Homecoming Queen. With a tear of joy, Gwen accepted the crown and a kiss from Superintendent John Jordan, and a bouquet of roses from last year's queen, Janet Crisp. This Southern Night will long be remembered as one of the most beautiful homecoming events ever presented at Murphy High. The sponsors for homecoming were Mrs. Laura Postell, Mrs. Karen Wayman, and the Pep Club. 22 H0MEC0MING SENIOR ATTENDANTS Top: Donna Ramsey Escort Anthony Segars; Bottom Left: Susan Ridenhour, Escort Bryant Kinney; Bottom Right: Belinda Smart Escort Tim Williams. ICDE CICDE P 37 ADMINISTRATION We have an outstanding school. This is largely due to the three people in the front office. Mr. Forrister is the man with the plan 1 and he works tirelessly to see that the plan works. Mr. Bob Hendrix takes care of many problems that only a tough, understanding fellow undertakes; for instance, he is the person students who slip out to Hardee's for lunch get to see. But the relaxed atmosphere which makes the kids actually LIKE to go to the office is caused by Mrs. Gee, who keeps her cool despite constant interruptions. Mr. Charles Forrister: Principal. Mr. Bob Hendrix: Assistant Principal, Physical Science. Mrs. Peggy Gee: Secretary. Mr. John Jordan: Superintendent of Cherokee County Schools. Maintenance: Howard Rooster Carter. Custodians: Betty Gladson, Greta Young. Dietician: Sharon Hicks. Lunchroom Staff: Margie Kephart, Mollie Worley, Jettie Cornwell, Virginia Mintz. While the students study and take breaks, the lunchroom staff prepares hearty meals. And long after students are gone, Greta and Betty are tidying the premises for another day. Term papers, compositions, literature, vacabulary, and grammar are all part of our English Department. As usual, it was a common sight to see many busy students rushing to turn in last minute book reports and handing in late assignments this year. Despite heavy grammar exercises with accompanying complaints, not one student died. Mrs. Patsy Hendrix: English II, English III, English IV. Mrs. Velma Burch: Seventh Grade English, English II, English IV, Journalism. Mr. Dave Newsome: English I, English III. Mrs. Laura Postell: English I, English III. Mrs. Emma Louise Minor: Library Science. ENGLISH 44 The library is both an enjoyable and informational place to go. There students can get books which are useful when doing those delightful research papers and those perpetual book reports. Not only is it a place to work, but also a good place to meet friends and skip class. Our dedicated librarian, Mrs. Minor, maintains order, teaches library science, and keeps a good selection of books and magazines for student and faculty use. SCIENCE 46 MUSIC Music this year at MHS was really great. Our award winning band, talented chorus, and ambitious guitarists added a special touch to the school. One of these special touches, however, was added by several enthusiastic chorus members. It was called Sweetly Sings the Donkey and it will be difficult to forget. 47 MUSIC VOCATIONAL Mr. Charles Smith: Mechanical Drawing, Carpentry I. Mrs. Mary Jordan: Introduction to Health Occupations, Health Occupations I, Health Occupations II. Mr. Joseph Sursavage: Agriculture. Mr. Danny Anderson: Auto Mechanics I, Auto Mechanics II. Mrs. Ruth Pullium: Guidance Counselor. DRIVER EDUCATION For Mr. McConnell, life is a series of bumps and jolts, puddles and snow. Everyday it is the same: three point turns, parrallel parking, T-intersections, and fifty-five miles an hour. Our hats are off to the man who puts his life in the hands of his students. Mr. Ralph McConnell: Driver Education. 50 H M acoia ia a-i Cm Ci r KITE Organizations offer an individual a chance to grow with others in an interest that they all share in common. cum BETA CLUB The Beta Club stands for outstanding achievement, loyalty, and leadership. An 8-0 shutout of Andrews was the Dog's first big win of the season. This game meant a lot to the boys, who had suffered hard losses earlier against Swain and a larger Tuscola team. Of all the games this fall, the Dog's most rewarding experience was that of playing the North Carolina School for the Deaf. Most of the boys expressed the same feeling for the NCSD team: they were the nicest team that Murphy had ever played. After a loss to Robbinsville, our season was marred by ten players resigning from the team. Although this action was disappointing, junior varsity players filled in the vacant spots and carried on. Next year the Bulldogs are sure to bounce back to a winning season. Seiiior Bulldogs The Class of 1978 was represented by six Bulldog players this fall. Although four of these young men did not play in the final three games, three have played football since their freshman year in high school. Lee Ferguson played for the Bulldogs for four seasons. He had the honor of being named to the All-Conference team during his sophomore year. Also playing four years was Jerry Farner. Jerry was named All- Conference for two consecutive seasons, his sophomore and junior years. Larry Kernea, better known as Gerty, also played for four seasons. This was the first year of playing football for Marty Freeman. While many of the area schools have had brothers playing on the same team, Murphy had the distinction of having a set of twins play football together. Larry Westmoreland, captain of the Bulldogs, played since his sophomore year. His brother Gary played four full seasons of football, and was awarded the Defensive Lineman trophy in 1976. Although the excitement of winning a state championship and being in the play-offs for two years is over, each will carry memories of the games won and lost for MHS. The boys put a lot of hard work and energy into this season. The seniors provided leadership and positive attitudes to insure that their last year would really count. The juniors and sophomores, working as hard as ever, put forth their best and helped to make the Bulldogs a well-rounded, talented, and determined team. Even though the boys suffered disappointing losses, it was the many come-from-behind wins that we will all remember. Coach Jim McCombs 76 BASKETBALL The Class of '78 had three representatives on this years' team. Having previously been a member of the marching band, Jeff Ledford (upper left) played his first and only year of varsity basketball. Tim Williams (lower left), better known to his friends as Fish, has played for three years. Besides being a member of the Monogram Club, Tim has been a Homecoming escort twice. Having moved to Murphy two years ago, Greg Mills (lower right) has played basketball for two seasons. These three young men have each shown good attitude, ability, and desire to become better athletes. They have proven to be very good representatives of the Senior class, both on and off the court. Coach Watson 79 Lady Bulldogs The winter may have been an extra-cold one, but the basketball court was certainly hot when the Lady Bulldogs were playing. The balls seemed to float effortlessly into the net as the excited crowd looked on. This was the most successful season in recent years at Murphy High for our girls' team. Under the guidance of new coach, Karen Watson, the girls won games by surprisingly wide margins over tough opponents. It soon became a relatively common sight to see them run off the court victorious. But who can forget the games lost by a mere point or two? The winter of '77-'78 is one that will be remembered . . . in one way or another. crr D Front row: Andrea Mulkey, Guard; Missi Williams, Forward; Coach Karen Watson; Jeanne Crisp, Guard; Sheila Berrong, Guard. She has been a loyal and dedicated member of the team for four years. Her leadership qualities inspired her teammates to select her as co-captain this year. A very sports-minded person, Andrea has played softball for three years, volleyball for two years, and was a cheerleader this year. Playing on the team, I've made a lot of friends, both in my school and from other schools, says Andrea. I've always enjoyed sports. Being captain of the team, I've especially enjoyed this year. BASKETBALL 81 Molle vbhll A new sport to Murphy High School, volleyball became increasingly popular this year. The girls took on experienced teams from area schools, such as Andrews, Hayesville, and Robbinsvilie. Practices after school, hard work on the part of the entire team, and the patience of coach Karen Watson helped to build a team that gained experience and knowledge in their second season of play. 83 SOFTBPLL Girls Place Second In Conference During 1977 Season Andrea, Patricia, Brenda, Sandy and Wren; Annette, Mary, Mlssi, Karen, Mary and Renee. T The Year At MHS Many exciting events made our year at MHS complete. The cheerleaders and majorettes started out the year by bringing home awards for outstanding performances at summer camps. The Bulldog band later capped the winning streak off when they received four trophies at the WCU Marching Band Contest. Even though it was a bleak and rainy day, the band came through with the Outstanding Drum Major Award, Inspection Award, Outstanding Twirling Award, and a Division III Award. During football season the atmosphere at MHS was pretty hectic. The Bulldog team had their differences and many players decided to resign. Nevertheless, the atmosphere settled down and the team carried on. Once again Juniors were ecstatic upon receiving their class rings. They carried out the tradition of turning the ring on the finger 79 times for a kiss. Christmas turned the halls of MHS into a boulevard of decorated doors. Snow, which brought many vacations, broke the boredom of January. In February, one lucky guy got to be the Majorette Sweetheart, a project to help the girls raise money for their new uniforms. From then on warm weather arrived and the year quickly whizzed by. The year closed with a rainbow prom and last, but not least, it closed with a memorable graduation for the Seniors. There's a time to part and a time to meet, There's a time to sleep and a time to eat. There's a time to work and a time to play. There's a time to sing and a time to pray. There's a time that's glad and a time that's blue. There's a time to plan and a time to do. But there never was a time to quit! What Did The lunchroom got into the swing of things. They had a salad bar and also sold tea. The Senior class was one of the smallest MHS ever had. Love blossomed and fizzled out between many couples. Popular phrases were excu-u- use me, tell him where to get off, he's a fox, put the pedal to the metal, check it out, get down, get off my case, and that was a slick move. Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind invaded the hearts and minds of many. In the fashion line, boots and gauchos were really in. Jeans and Khaki pants with flannel shirts made the scene. Down vests and jackets A Senior’s Life What am I going to do now? Help! This was the familiar cry of the Senior who finally realized he was facing a drastic change in his life. His years of security at MHS were over, and the big world outside was waiting for his first big step. This was a year of deep confusion for the Senior. But a few things were clear. The Prom was one. The theme was The End of the Rainbow, with pastel colors dominant. The night was filled with a special magic, much like that of the spectrum of a rainbow after a heavy rain. After caps, gowns, and invitations were ordered much of the Senior's fear had subsided. The Senior's life at good 'ole MHS was coming to an end and preparation for his future life had been made. You Say? warmed many. Pinstripe and warm-up suits made a come back and Adidas shoes were still with it. Ollie became a favorite new teacher. With all the snow, we were all slip sliding away. The highway began taking its new course at MHS. Jessica and Chester, Bert and Mary, and the rest of the mixed up gang wrapped many of us up in their lives. We were all singing tunes by Barry Manilow, Stevie Wonder, Steve Miller Band, Bee Gees, ELO, Earth Wind Fire, Chicago, Natalie Cole, Wild Cherry, Foreigner, Leo Sayer, and Rod Stewart. This was MHS in the year that was. In Memoriam On January 8, 1978, Murphy High School lost a good friend. MRS. JEAN MULL gave unselfishly of her time, talent and materials to help MHS in any way she could. Her clever bulletin boards and beautiful Homecomings and proms will always be remembered, as well as her personality and her great love for young people. Nature's first green is gold. Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief. So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.
