It was a crisp, cool, yet clear, autumn night. The song and the theme was Some- where Over the Rainbow. The MHS Band played the theme song and also formed a path which the court walked through. The Cheerleaders and the Golden M Girls held ribbons of various colors and made a formation which gave the effect of a rainbow. As each girl and her escort walked under the pastel rainbow, the crowd watched and waited the final moment. Then the Queen was revealed—Miss Janet Crisp. There had been much preparation and work involved in making Homecoming a special night. Mrs. Karen Wayman, Mrs. Laura Postell, and the Pep Club planned and raised the money for the necessary materials. This year MHS made quite a few changes. The most obvious change was the Vocational Build- ing which expanded the curricu- lum of our high school. The ath- letics department introduced wrestling, volleyball, and base- ball to the sporting life at MHS. The lunchroom began serving breakfast this year and proved to be a successful addition. More changes will come in the future and, hopefully, will be as effec- tive as these have been. Over The Tube Around The World The latest thing in TV this year was the Novel for Television. Such books as THE CAPTAINS AND THE KINGS, ONCE AN EAGLE, and SEVENTH AVENUE came to life on NBC's Best Sellers. Television history was made when 130 million people watched ABC's presentation of Alex Haley's ROOTS, which was shown on eight consecutive nights. RICH MAN, POOR MAN was such a hit that a Book II was created and it was the soap- ODera for the prime-time crowd. Movies for television were never so good as when movies such as The Sound of Music, Rose- mary's Baby, and Gone With the Wind made their way into people's living rooms. Time nas changed the faces of the screen from Superman to the Six Million Dollar Man, from Bat Girl to the Bionic Woman, and from the Three Musketeers, to Charlie's Angels. Amidst all the change, one face, however, looked oddlv familiar —the face of America's hero, the Fonz. The Bicentennial is finally over . . . Dorothy Hamill became the first American to win the Olympic gold medal in figure skating since 1968 . . . Howard Hughes, J. Paul Getty, Agatha Christie, and Freddie Prinze died . . . University of Pittsburg was the Number One college football team . . . Nadia Comen- eci received the first perfect score in Olympic women's gym- nastics . . . The Oakland Raiders were the 1976 World Champion football team after they beat the Minnesota Vikings 32-14 in the Super Bowl . . . The old movies became the new as King Kong and A Star Is Born were re- made and a Silent Movie was even a big hit . . . The first execution in 10 years was in Utah as Gary Gilmore died before a firing squad . . . The Cincinnati Reds won the World Series . . . Swine flu shots were in . . . Bread got back together . . . Muhammed Ali remained the Heavyweight Champion of the World . . . And that's the way it was for 1976-77. An Unforgettable Experience On January 7, the MHS band got a late start on what at first seemed like an ordinary band trip. The 56 band members left Murphy at 12:30 for a trip to Raleigh, N.C., to be in Governor Hunt's Inaugur- al Parade. After the long bus trip, they arrived at the plush Royal Villa Inn for a good night's sleep. The band got up early the next morning and dressed for the parade, which was to last from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, they rose at 5:00 a.m. to get an early start home. The members were awake enough to notice that it was snowing. After a cautious trip because of the snow, the bus was stopped in Sylva about 3:30 p.m. and were told they could go no further. This unexpected news excited many, puzzled some, and fright- ened a few. What do we do now? was a question many asked. Being snowbound was one thing, but having it happen in Sylva was another. Attitudes were soon changed about the town, however. Accommoda- tions were made in the Sylva- Webster gym. People kindly dona- ted food and sleeping bags enough for all. The band members called their parents. They played basketball and some of the boys got up a chorus and serenaded everyone else. One band member even got interviewed for the ASHEVILLE CITIZEN. Monday, much of the snow had melted and our musicians started home. Finally about 2:30 p.m., the bus rolled in. It had been and enjoyable and an unusual trip, one that will definitely be re- membered for a long time. Expansion Senior Life On January 3, the Cherokee County Vocational Building was opened to Andrews Hiwassee Dam and Murphy High Schools. The students had their choice of courses dealing with Health Occu- pation, Carpentry, Auto Mech- anics, Child Care, and Business. The major emphasis was put on students who were entering the job market rather than those who were college bound. Hopefully, the Vocational Build- ing will continue its functions for next year and the years to come. For some, this year was just a beginning; for others, it was the end. The seniors found that this year presented more problems than they had bargained for. Finally after much compromise, problems were solved and seniors began preparing for May. The prom was donned with the theme Moonlight Magic, with blue and silver as the dominant colors. The location for the prom was Levi cafeteria. Caps, gowns, and invitations were ordered and before long, the seniors were on their way to graduation. Every winter, school students pray diligently for snow and cold weather. This year, the many prayers were answered and the snow fell in abundance. The snow started shortly after the Christmas holidays and it did not let up until spring arrived. The winter of 1977 was the coldest recorded in many years. Students had two consecutive weeks in which to build snowmen, sled, and have snowball fights. The snow was not as much fun for some as it was for others. The unusually cold weather caused a The South In the 1976 Presidential election, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter were in hot competition. Gerald Ford, that gentle man who took over the Presidency during troubled times, lost by a small margin to Jimmy Carter, the Southern peanut farmer with the wide grin. national fuel and energy crisis which closed businesses, schools, and many community functions across the United States. In Buf- falo, New York, snow drifts were as high as 48 inches in places and, for the first time in years, areas of the Mississippi River were fro- zen. The snow, cold weather, energy crisis, and days of missed school all made the winter of 1976-77 a season to remember. Rises Again At school, the Republicans and Democrats were rivals also. In a mock election, which reflected the outcome of the national con- test, Jimmy Carter won by only one vote. Although the vote was close, majority still rules and Jimmy Carter is now in office, which proves that the south's gon- na rise again! MHS Gossip We got a baseball and a wrestling team. The Vocational Building opened and with it came several new teachers and courses. Pam Brugh, Marian Stiles, Dottie Yonce, Pam Ledford, and Wanda Roberson changed their names. The new dances were tne Bump, the Hustle, and the Bus Stop. Skateboards and King Kong made a comeback. We missed two weeks of school because of snow! The Car Wash clap became unfor- gettable. The parking lot was a mudhole. A lot of romances, in- fatuations, crushes, and true loves came and left. Charlie's Angels got a lot of attention. Cowboy boots, gauchos, sweaters, old faithful jeans, earth shoes, flan- nel shirts, vests with blazers, short hair, and Adidas were in. Popular pasttimes were riding around town, going to the Pizza Hut, attending football and basketball games, shopping, tennis, dating, talking on the telephone about or to the opposite sex, gossiping, watching T.V., goofing off, acting silly, eating, going to the drive-in, dancing, reading, partying, camp- ing out, after school jobs, going to the new Hardees or to the Ban- tam Chef, working on cars, park- ing, C.B. 'ing, cruising, and watch- ing soap operas. While showing off their new class rings, juniors were rewarded with a kiss after having their rings turned around their finger 78 times. The State Highway Department tore up our mountain to build the new road. Girls wore flavored lipstick and boys shaved their beards. That's life. Passing Through I shall pass Through this world But once. Any good therefore That I can do Let me do it now For I shall not pass This way Again. Yet out of the defeats, the players gained wis- dom. They learned leadership, sportsmanship, and many other qualities - all of which will help them succeed in life. As Coach Postell so wisely said, Many values can be derived from playing football - values that are going to help make the young athlete a better person and thus a better citizen. 73 Coaches Wayne Watson and Denny McClure 74 The Pride Of The Black And Gold Bryan Clayton Tail Back What words can express the excitement of a cold, crisp fall night when a team of dedicated boys race out un- der blazing lights to give their all for themselves and their school ? What words can express their practicing until they are dead tired, running until they can run no more, and risking a serious injury that can last a lifetime? What words? The words that describe their love of the game football and the pride of wearing the Black and Gold. Although this was the last year for the seniors, they will carry the memories and the pride of their years at MHS throughout life. With a final record of 1 2 wins and 7 losses, the boys ended the regular season rated 4 in conference and 7 in 2-A and 1-A schools in WNC. They started the season with a lot going for them. Ex- perienced seniors provided the leadership and determi- nation to make their last year count. The juniors and sophomores, following in the tracks of the seniors, added talent , effort, and enthus- iasm. All the ingredients were there for a winning team and a winning season. Long days spent exercising, run- ning, and shooting, knocked off the rough edges and pro- duced a team that could and did win. A lot of excitement was generated during basket- ball season. There was the surprise as stolen balls were dribbled down the court for two more points. There was the amazement of balls al- most magically floating through the net from seem- ingly impossible positions. Then again there was the disappointment of fouls made at the wrong time. And who could forget the games lost by a mere point or two. But at the end of the season, we can look back and know that the talent, effort, and deter- mination they portrayed made the season a good one. It was indeed—a season to remember. 83 Murphy High School Girls’ Basketball: STANDING: Lori Shook-Manager, Sandy Morris, Mary KNEELING: Andrea Mulkey, Gwen Rose, Missi Williams, Colbert, Annette Thurman, Sandy Martin, Cindy Cannon, Mary Farmer, Mary Ann Ferguson, Wren Ledford, Jeanne Jenny Mauldin, Angie Owen, Renee Colbert Crisp Coach Danny Vaughn 84 Effort, Energy, and Enthusiasm Sandy Martin Forward If a trophy were given for the most enthusiastic team, the MHS girls' basketball team would certainly win. Even in the face of defeat, they learned to smile. After victories, they were esctatic. It is after such a victory that all the laps run, all the hours of practicing an already perfect lay-up, and the time sacrificed in the name of basketball, became worthwhile. These girls give their all and receive little in return. But what they receive, to them, is pure gold. The sounds of the cheering of the crowds as they run onto the court. The silence which prevails as a ball rolls around the net before falling in, adding two more points toward a hard fought victory. And so very important are the words of praise from coaches, fellow-teammates, parents, and just friends. Yes, the victories and the small honors received make playing basketball at MHS worthwhile. 85 A Season To Learn From Scores We Union Co. 26 They 32 Nantahala 39 33 Hiwassee Dam 26 30 Hayesville 36 57 Highlands 50 14 Andrews 38 56 Mountain View 35 38 Stecoan 33 67 Nantahala 22 26 Hayesville 43 60 Andrews 36 53 Franklin 32 49 Swain 32 39 Hiwassee Dam 35 30 Franklin 11 48 Blue Ridge 40 32 Union Co. 33 37 Cullowhee 37 39 Robbinsville 34 39 86 Junior Varsity Has Successful Season. o STANDING: Billy Hall, Mark Vaughn, Ronnie Jackson, Emmett Thompson, Greg Keith, Quit, Barry Killian, Eric Pete McKeon, Eddie Hatchett, Keith Townson, Niki Beal, Emmett Oliver, Zimmerman, Wade Massey KNEELING: Mark Wiggins, Tim Hughes, Coach Wayne Watson Scores We They Union Co. 30 42 Hiwassee Dam 57 42 Hayesville 40 33 Highlands 48 22 Andrews 32 34 Hayesville 56 50 Andrews 49 61 Swain 28 56 Hiwassee Dam 56 36 Franklin 53 68 Blue Ridge 68 33 Union Co. 30 33 Cullowhee 45 66 Robbinsville 60 59 87 Softball Great softball teams are a tradition at MHS. Last year our girls were the conference champs. If all goes well, they will retain that title this year. Yet they receive little credit. It takes guts to prac- tice in the cold and rain, slipping and sliding in the mud. It takes stamina to go when the going gets rough. But every year one can find the same group of girls down on the softball field practicing long after everyone else has gone home. Why? Because of tradition. Andrea Mulkey, Cindy Davis, Mary Chastain, Kathy Roberson, Brenda Farmer, Annette Thurman, Lisa Kernea, Cheryl Curtis, Bernice Carringer, Karen Brendle, Missi Johnson, Angi Lyles Williams, Teresa Colbert, Wanda Baseball Even though this is the first year MHS has had a baseball team, it is none the less important. It takes real enthusiasm to practice in the cold, to run endless laps, or to throw baseballs until arm muscles ache. These boys realize they will receive little credit but still they go on, guided by one thing alone—the joy they receive from playing baseball. For them, this is credit enough. Golf Golf is a sport which demands great concentration and an abudance of skill. The golf team at MHS has proven they have talent by the many victories they have walked away with. Many hours are spent trying to straighten out a drive or smooth out a putt. They are repaid for their hard work as the ball glides into the hole securing yet another victory for MHS . STANDING: Jackie Owens, Robert Smith, Danny KNEELING: George Seiglie, Eric Townson, Frank Thompson, J. C. Gibson, Allen Blakemore Turner, Mark Vaughn 89 The Spirit Of Dedication Dedication is the most important quality of a cheer- leader. Always a great part of the whole at MHS, nine dedicated girls cheered MHS teams on through- out the year. These girls knew hours of practice to perfect routines, nights of forgotten homework, the effort it takes to smile in the face of defeat, the racking of brains to come up with new ideas, and the countless hours of work to keep spirit and enthusiasm high. Their efforts were rewarded by the sound of the cheering crowds and the excitement of football and basketball games. The often tiresome job becomes worthwhile when the ball swishes the basket or crosses the goal line, adding up points toward a MHS victory. -A A LEFT TO RIGHT: Charlene Colbert, Sharon Lambert, Cindy Cannon, Karen Waldroup, Cindy Davis, Janet Crisp, Captain; Brenda Wor- ley, Pam Honeycutt and Gwen Rose. However, all of these little irritations can't destroy the feeling of unity that playing and marching together create. The long hours of practice become worthwhile for the members of the band when they march out on the field decked out in new uniforms of black and gold, and hear the cheers and applause from the crowd. The memories of all those long, long practice sections, all the sweat, hard work, and pain that they went through becomes dim. And as they march off the field, they have the satisfaction of knowing that they have done their job and done it well. 95 Percussion 98 Becky Hill-Treasurer Gale Beaver-Secretary John Allen S . % Darryl Barnett Mattie Allen Steve Allen Gale Beaver Allen Blakemore Teresa Adams Carl Auvil Steve Brooks Kathy Calhoun Pam Brugh 99 SENIORS Cheryl Curtis Tony Curtis Cindy Davis Tim Davis Susan Decker Billy Derreberry Cindy Dickey Tony Dickey 100 Mike Dillard Eddie Dockery Tony Dockery Chris Dunbar Rhonda Freeman Bobby Gaddis Gary Earley Terry Fair Jimmy Farmer Mike Foust Thurman Eller Mike English Sherry Garrett Morris Graves Pam Gray Bill Gomes Danny Gee Scott Givens m T Robert Graves Phil Haigler Vic Haigler Cheryl Hall Martha Hall Johnny Hartness 102 SENIORS 103 Lewis Jones Teresa Jones Mike Lackey Jeff Leatherwood Donnie Ledford Nicki Loudermilk David McDonald Patsy McDonald Sandy Morris Marian Murphy SENIORS Nancy Patterson Lynn Peek Tom Philipp Larry Phillips Alan Pipes Patti Popular Jerry Pressley Dottie Raxter Van Rivenbark Sandra Roberson 105 Pam Sandidge Darrvl Smith Rnhhip mith Steve Spiva J David Stalcup Carol Taylor Angie Stalcup Tim Stalcup Donald Stiles Wanda Wilson Jerry Farner-President Larry Kernea-Treasurer Donna Amos Ginger Anderson Rex Barnett June Beaver Tim Beaver Anna Beavers Debra Bowling T eresa Brown Teresa Burgess Jim Carlson Jackie Carroll Derwin Chastain Kenneth Chastain Bill Coffey Terry Coleman Susan Cook Jenny Crawford Charles Davis Dona Dawkins John Deese Joyce Dockery Leon Dockery Linda Dockery Mack Dockery Robert Dockery Tony Dockery Sally Eller Brian Farmer Jerry Farner Lee Ferguson Marty Freeman Chuck Gomes Jamie Graves Phoebe Graves 110 Mark Grizzle Steve Guthrie Terry Hall Pam Hedrick David Hembree Dexter Hubbard Brenda Hughes Keith Hughes Roger Hugnes David Hyatt Teresa Jackson Tim Johnson Tony Kent Tammy Kephart Larry Kernea Dwayne Kilpatrick Bryant Kinney Sharon Lambert Lesa Laney Jeff Ledford Renee Ledford Bruce London Angi Lyles Dean Mash burn Jennifer Mason Debbie McClure Shawn McCollum Johnny McCoy Edith McMillian Greg Mills Margaret Mills Rhonda Mingus Kathy Moore Janet Morley 112 JUNIORS Andrea Mu I key Scott Nicholls Cindy Nix Nadine 0' del I Angie Owen Bobby Pace Chris Pack Gloria Picklesimer Teresa Pullium Melinda Queen Paul Radford Donna Ramsey Sharon Richardson Susan Ridenhour 113 Kathy Roberson Micky Roberson Robby Roberts Teresa Roberts Vickie Rogers Gwen Rose Anthony Segars Jorge Seiglie Ricky Shelton Belinda Smart Carole Stiles Janice Stiles James Stiles Randy Stiles 114 Steve Swint A liene Tanner Carole T anner Gall Tanner T ammy T anner Philip Tatum Paul Thistle Debbie Thrasher Sandy Thomasson Terry Waggoner Gary Westmoreland Larry Westmoreland Robert Whitener Tim Williams Eddie Woods Lisa Woody Brenda Worley 115 Jenny Mauldin-Treasurer Teresa Colbert-Secretary Kathy Adams Martin Allen Jerry Anderson Bobby Baker Tommy Battle Niki Beal Audrey Beavers Terry Beaver Gary Brendle Karen Brendle Mary Brown Danny Bryson Sandy Byers Cindy Cannon Dewayne Cannon Lisa Carringer J immy Carroll Dena Carter Karen Carter Gary Chambers Wade Chauney Randall Clark Charlene Colbert Fred Colbert Teresa Colbert Randy Cook Ty Corbin Joey Cordell Jeanne Crisp Ava Crowe Randy Curtis Tony Dalrymple Randall Davis Mitchell Decker Gary Deval Janet Dillard George Dockery James Dockery Patricia Dockery Elisa Dunbar Lynn Early Verlon Enloe Gloria Farmer Gordan Farmer 118 Mary Farmer Susie Flemming Julie Fowler Becky Fralick Lynn Garrison Warren Golden Gary Graves Delora Grindstaff Billy Hall Cindy Hall Jeff Hall Teresa Hawkins Pamela Heltzel Lisa Hendrix David Hughes Eugene Hughes Tim Hughes James Huskins Sandra Ingram 119 ■■ Ronnie Jackson Bernice Johnson Donald Johnson Greg Johnson Keith Jones Wren Ledford Jack Little David Lovingood Marcal Lyle Ricky Lyles Ann Manchester Steve Martin Doris Mashburn Jeff Mashburn Teresa Jump Steve Kent Glenn Kephart Pam Kephart Brenda Kema Dawn Massey Wade Massey Jenny Mauldin Tim Mauney Darlene McCoy Felishia McCoy Greg McDonald Lisa McDonald Lorrie McDonald Donnie Morron Tenna Moss Teresa Mullholland Greg Mulkey Sam Myers Eric Oliver Jerry Oliver Marie Oliver Jane Panther Sandy Parker 121 Darryl Patterson Brenda Phillips Melinda Phillips Betty Pope Carlene Prather Robbie Queen Larry Radford Stanley Raxter Danny Rich Tracy Roberson Becky Roberts Gary Roberts Mike Roberts Doug Mills Shelia Roberts Brenda Rogers Debbie Rose f Brenda Stiles David Stiles Debbie Stiles John Sutton Rosemary Sutton Dawn Taylor Marian Thompson Annette Thurman Lisa Timpson Kathy Totherow SO PH, O.
