It makes no diffe- rence whether with candles, fireworks, sales or songs, just so there is joy in the remembering. We on the annual staff have dedicated this Kanuhsheta as a celebration, not only to the events which happened 200 years ago that helped shape this country, but also as a future celebration to the events which happened this past year that helped shape each of our lives. All our dandelion days are done and so we’ll turn our heads away from every silver morning and every golden day. But sweet September’s open arms belonged to us and held us once. The Bulldogs went into the State AA Playoffs for the second straight year, but this time lost a heartbreaker, 7-6, to Sun Valley in the second round of competition. The ’75 Bulldogs were a team who followed in the footsteps of the great 1974 team, who were State Champs and had an un- defeated season. But the Bull- dogs this season were also a “great” team, great in the sense that they had the winner’s in- stinct and fought to the final second of the game, great in the way they withstood a plague of injuries and were always ready to give their opponents a com- petitive battle, and great in the way that the nine seniors were the nucleus of the Bulldog team and led the younger players who were called on to fill the vacant spots left on the team. They were great in the sense that they fought their way for eight victo- ries and great in the way that they represented our school so that we can be proud to have been a part of the “Spirit of ’76.” First Row, left to right: Bill Owen, Carl Stiles. Coaches Terry Postell, Bob Hendrix and Wayne Watson had nine senior Dogs who would be the backbone of the 1975 Bulldogs. Nine who would be leaders and called upon to carry on the winning tradition at Murphy High. Each senior Bulldog was an indivi- dual who was different from the others on the football team yet contributed in his own way to the success of the season. Seven of the nine Bulldogs played football all 4 years at Murphy High School. David Murphy, Lee Lackey and Johnny Queen were members of the starting Bulldog backfield that gained over 2500 yards this season. Quarterback Marty Douglas passed for over 500 yards and also was a regular in the Bulldog defensive backfield for the past two seasons. Carl Stiles and Bill Owen, returning starters in the line were both co-captains and solid for the Bulldogs on the line. Steve Dockery, a guard, was valuable to the Bulldogs on the special teams. Ken McClure also a guard, was a starter, but was in- jured early in the season and played only in the first few games. Whenever that phrase is heard, one thinks of the fighting spirit that was in effect when our country was being founded. That same spirit prevailed as the 1975 Bulldogs went up against great odds. The Bulldogs were plagued by injuries throughout the season, and were hardly able to field the same eleven week after week. Inexperienced players were forced into action to replace the injured players. Even so, they carried on the Bulldog’s winning ways, and went on to a victorious season. Is everything clear this way, Ref? You missed me! 98 Showed The Spirit of ’76 It looks like one of us ought to get him. I’d better get out of here. Just a few yards to the goal line! The girls were to wear old-fashioned dresses and carry red, white and blue nosegays. Many former queens were asked to participate in Homecoming exercises to add to the nostalgic theme. Mrs. Karen Wayman planned where the band, Golden “M” girls, former queens and court would be placed and how they would move once on the field. After several rehearsals, everything seemed all set except for the 1,000 ballons needed to be filled with helium at the last minute. Then Friday afternoon disaster struck. Clouds that had been threatening all day turned into rain and the game had to be postponed until the next night. But the band was to go to a competition that day and there was a possibility they might not make it back for the ceremonies. After several anxious hours of pre-game apprehension, the band arrived just in time; and it looked like smooth sailing. Halftime came and tension mounted as the band and Golden “M” girls marched onto the field and the former queens were introduced. Then this year’s court came forward as the band played the lyrical “Theme from Mash.” The stands, waiting for the queen to be announced, grew strangely quiet. Then amid a burst of cheers and tears, a thousand red, white and blue ballons were released as Miss Debbie Graves was announced MHS 1975-76 Home- coming Queen. For the Seniors, it was our last year among the friends we have here; for the Fresh- men, it was just the beginning; and for the Sophomores and Juniors, we hope it was more than just in-between. We set out to make the annual a celebration of the memories we shared here with others. We only ask when you are tired of reliving memories that you go out and celebrate life and thus create new ones.
