The coaches and the team knew they had the potential and with the fan’s support and enthusiasm they breezed through the season. With Sylva behind, it was full steam ahead. Throughout the season there had been yells of We’re No. 1, Dogs are Superstars, and All the Way to State. Now the real test neared. First was Polk Central at Murphy. Enduring subfreezing temperatures of 24 degrees, approximately 3,000 fans turned out to this game. Winning by a close margin, Murphy proceeded to the finals. School was called off next Friday so students and other fans could ride chartered buses and cars to Sparta to support the Bulldogs on a 42 to 22 win over Allegheny. Next week at home the playoffs pitted Murphy against South Stanley, the season’s toughest team. The band closed off the breath-holding game appro- priately with “The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down” as the South lost again, 21 to 14. Thoughts then went to the next and final game to be played 12 AA State Champions Tim Meyers, Chris McConnell, Joey Palmer. That week, the town of Murphy went all out in support of the Dogs with bonfires, snake dances, and a parade. To complete the anticipation of that week, Murphy Bulldogs ended the final game with a 32 to 21 win. Now they were truly No. 1. This event in our 1974-75 school year is a high- light of - The Way We Were. WE WERE STATE AA CHAMPS. Coach Terry Postell Coach Bob Hendrix Go Dogs! 13 Senior Super Stars The beginning of summer football practice meant to tlie Senior Dogs the beginning of their last year together as team-mates. It was their last chance to make good and they were determined to win this season. They were out to prove that the Class of ’75 had outstanding athletes as well as the other characteristics and abilities by which they become distinguished through the years. They resolved to make it as a team effort rather than as an individual or class effort. Using their utmost determination they made this last year together one that no one would forget. Who can forget a State Champion- ship! ? Tim Davis, Ervin Brown, Charlie Rogers, Darryl Barnett, Managers. 15 Hands off! Practices, drills, workouts, and more prac- tice. It was hard work and took a lot ot determination but when game time cainc, they were ready. Using determination and hard work throughout the season, they pushed their way to success, time and time again. After it was over they could be proud. Steadfastness had paid off. They were NO. 1. A team as outstanding as the Bulldogs have been this year could not help pro- ducing some awards. Murphy had All- Conference, All-State, “all-evcrything” winners. But without the team effort, as a whole, none of this could have been achieved. Realizing this, each winner could accept his award only in humility, grateful to be a part of such a team. The team itself won what could be considered the best award of all, the Smokey Moun- tain Conference Sportsmanship Award. As testament to the good coaching it takes to produce a great team, Coach Terry Postell was named “Coach of the Year” in the Smokey Mountain Conference AA Division. Other important honors given were Outstanding Back in Western Caro- lina, All-State Player, and All-American, all these to Willie Brown. What more can we say in proving that the Bulldogs are true winners - out- standing individually and collectively! Freshmen began the exciting week appro- priately with a sign welcoming everyone to Bulldog Country. Tuesday was Bulldog Super- star Day with the sophomores saluting all their Bulldog Superstars. Wednesday was highlighted by a Miss Western North Caro- lina Beauty Pageant which was sponsored by the juniors. The seniors’ theme on Thursday was Bulldog Kingdom, complete with a king and a court. Friday all of the classes got to- gether with each class displaying its “best” in a different part of the building. The week ended victoriously, of course, with a Bulldog victory of 42-14 over Robbins- ville. 22 Nancy Garrett — Senior Homecoming Court HOMECOMING QUEEN Nancy Garrett Denise Hembree — Senior Senior Court Janice Owens, Escort Billy Adams and Denise Hembree, Escort Aaron Roberts 28 Senior Court Nancy Garrett, Escort Steve Stiles and Candie Auvil, Escort Greg Kinney 29 31 Science WE MADE IT HAPPEN . . . . . .
