Each club member has worked hard to receive letters to go on their jackets and sweaters, not to mention going through initiation. All dub members are required to participate in one of the following athle- tic activities of the school: football (top photo), basket- ball (bottom photo), and track. The dub's sponsors are James McCombs, Wayne Watson, and Terry Postell. We’ve got soul! To insure spirit at Murphy High School and support the Bulldogs all the way, the Pep Club performed hilarious skits for the pep rallies and yelled loudest at all events. With the proceeds from all kinds of sales, they financed one of the best Homecomings in the history of M.H.S. Officers are (L to R) Marlene Hughes, Vice-President; Karen Morris, Reporter; Greg Kinney, Secretary- Treasurer; Lucy Mauldin, President. 49 World of Media The purpose of this dub is to promote interest of high school students in the field of library media-assistants. The club sponsors projects to support certain improve- ment programs in the library. Mrs. Emma Louise Minor is sponsor. At right officers are (L to R) Kathy Hughes, President; Kathy Elliot, Vice-President; Judy Kent, Reporter; (not pictured) Renee Mundy, Secretary. 50 Star Shooters The Science and Photography Club consists of people who are interested in science, and people who want to become better photographers. The club sponsored several activi- ties, including a photography con- test and a science fair. Mr. Charles Jolley is sponsor. Officers are (L to R) Terry Blake more. President; Lisa Warner, Secretary-Reporter; Robin Mauney, Vice-President; Nan Wimpey, Re- porter; Price McKeever, Sargent- at-Arms. 51 Homemakers of Tomorrow The Future Homemakers lends to M.H.S. the domestic touch through such actions as planting flowers in the plaza, serving up good things from the kitchen, making beautiful decorations for different occasions, and showing their wizardry at stitchery, as most women do. They are involved with the F.H.A. Club of the district, whose motto for the convention at Brevard was IMPACT. 52 Future Farmers? The Future Farmers of America Club is closely associated with the Ag depart- ment at Murphy High. During dub meetings the members do anything from shoveling coal to pitching horseshoes. The dub has various projects such as selling syrup to raise money. They also participate in contests with other FFA clubs. One such contest is working with tools efficiently. In this event the club took 4th place. Three other contests they've attended are the cattle judging, land surveying, and one concerned with Parliamentary Procedure. Officers pictured at left are (L to R) Phil Leatherwood, President; Bill Mur- phy, Reporter; Randy Cornwell, Secre- tary; Tim Dockery, Vice-President; Keith McMahan, Treasurer. 53 Scene behind the Scenes Li'l Abner and his gang paraded the halls and laughed at their country ways. campus of Murphy High, while the city folk The Speech and Drama Club supported Women's Lib by sponsoring M.H.S.'s first female teams. A powder puff football game was a great success, and will become an annual event. At Christmas the dub gave a party and a puppet show to the elementary school Special Ed. class. Off cers (L to R) Paula Lominac. Vice-President; Perry Hughes. President; Janice Owens, Secretary-Reporter. 54 Thinking of a Career? Try Journalism The concern for future careers is very real for the members of the Young Careers Club. They have speakers, work with handicrafts, and visit businesses. One job that has been studied by the Careers Club is journalism. This will come in handy for those students who plan to go on to the Journalism Club. Both share concern with making the future world a more relevant one. The Journalism Club members use their time to perfect their skills in publishing the Boomerang and preparing the Kanuhsheta for printing. Checkmate The Chess Club is devoted to the sport and intellectual challenge of one man versus another. The club's major activity is actually playing the game. There are, however, periods of instruction in technique and history. Frivolity and conversation of ten accompany dub meetings. The dub also sent a member to compete in tourna- ment for chess championship. The Tweeters The Recorder Club is a new dub which consists of only three mem- bers. The sponsor. Mrs. Mozelle Puett, feels the dub has definitely been worth while. They have been progressing nicely, playing a variety of music from simple folk tunes to Christmas carols and classical music. Fly the Friendly Skies of M.FI.S. The Aviation Club has been able to do more flying this year than in previous years. Hours spent flying may be used towards obtain- ing their pilot licenses. Mr. Bob Hendrix, their courageous leader, gives his young birds high hopes and parachutes. In line-up are dub officers (L to R) Archie Whitener, Vice-President; David Ellis, President; Andy Fralick, Treasurer; Robbin Rose, Secretary. 57 EI Circulo Espanol Una Pinata sin Dulces? A Pinata without candy? The Spanish Club ordered a pinata and it came without candy. So with the ingenuity of the dub president, a paper bag, and halloween candy bought from a friend, the problem was solved. Adding a Spanish touch to the Home Ec. department, they traded places with the F.H.A. members atone meet- ing to make tacos. A t regular meetings the members con- verse, in Spanish, of course. 58 Earned More Than $45,000 By December D.E.C.A. has forty-two members who work part-time in the afternoon. From the start of school through December, these students had worked more than 23,000 hours and earned more than $45,000 as a group. These students also enter competitive events on the district, state and national level. At the left the D.E. Club officers are (front row, L to R) Peggy Rich, Vice- President; Steve Forrister, President; (back row) Gail Wilson, Secretary- Treasurer; Danny English, Historian. mci CLUBS OF ' AMERICA MURPHY HIGH SCHOOL Ci vitans work for children The Junior Civitan Club started the year off with a bake sale which was followed by a raffle. Near Christmas the dub had an old- fashioned box supper. These pro- jects were successful, and the money was used for milk tickets for twenty elementary school children. An- other project was purchasing fuel for a member of the community. Throughout the year the dub planned many projects that were concerned with the well-being of the community. Mr. George Hall is sponsor. 60 Children celebrate with Spirited Youth The Spirited Youth Club is made up of Christians who have an inte- rest in the community. Their pro- jects this year included letters to the Cherokee Scout speaking out against liquor by the drink; adopt- ing four underprivileged children and giving them a Christmas party with presents and a visit from Santa Claus and Carlton Thompson telling the Christmas story. They had other visiting speakers includ- ing Eunice Shields, telling of her visit to the Holy Land; Nord Davis, an anti-Communist; and Mr. Ralph McConnell, giving his personal Christian testimony. Offi- cers were Denise Hembree, Secre- tary-Treasurer; Elizabeth Tatum, President; Joann Pope, Vice-Presi- dent; and Mrs. Geraldine Meadows, Sponsor. Standing on the Steps of Success... ... Wondering which way to go 77?e Student Council had an active year. They were in charge of recreation at lunch and keeping the grounds dean for outside eaters. They helped with Spirit Week and concluded it with a bonfire. As Homecoming arrived they presented the school with new rules for electing the Queen. The Student Council also sponsored the Christmas Dance, held in the school gym, with Blue Sky playing. Officers are (L to R) Buzzy Scott, President; Joan Holland, Secretary-Treasurer; and David Ellis, Vice- President. They Light the Way With Knowledge This year's Beta Club was the largest ever in the history of M.H.S. They had a success- ful year working on the club signs at the school entrance and sponsoring a bake sale, a Christmas door decorating contest, and a book fair. New members had a wild initia- tion, and as the year came to an end, a farewell dinner was given to the senior members. Officers (L to Ft) Cheryl Lewis, President; Helen Graves, Vice-President; Nancy Farmer, Secretary; Rusty Hughes, Treasurer; Lisa Warner, Reporter. 63 A Guiding Touch Administrators Mr. Charles Forrister - Principal Mr. John Jordan — Superintendent Cherokee County Schools 67 Dr. Peter Cook — Personal Guidance Counselor Mrs. Ruth Pullium - Counselor Mrs. Velma Burch - English outness tngnsn is one of the new short courses.
