Various routines performed by the majorettes highlighted these events. Participating in the Governor's Inaugural Parade, and presenting Christmas and Spring Con- Careers Club The Careers Club, spon- sored by Mrs. Ruth Bri- stol, consists of freshmen concerned about their future. They visit a variety of places of busi- ness in the Murphy vici- nity. Look out, world! Here come the future businessmen and women of America. The officers are: Jane Blakemore, President; Twyla Carroll, Vice-President; Betty Farmer, Secretary. Aviation Up, Up and Away! Students in the Aviation Club rose to the height of success. Each student had the chance to solo at least three hours. Now the Aviation Club members know the thrill that Bat- man feels as he flies through the air. Intramural Softball scored high as the favorite sport of Intramural Club members. However, since weather conditions did not permit outside activity much of the year, the girls kept alert and physically fit by playing basketball, speedball and volley ball in the gym. Their sponsor was Miss Sue Reynolds. Some of the loudest and liveliest participants in the pep rallies were the members of the Pep Club, whose obvious purpose was to promote school spirit. Clever pep rally skits and pre-game posters were only a few of the contributions of the Pep Club. 47 Farming isn't the only subject of the Future Farmers of America Club. These boys also enjoy mechanics and welding and horseshoes and Mr. Wilbur Roberts, their sponsor. Top left: Sorry, freshman initiates. Nervous photographer. 48 F.H.A. Using the theme Lets Make Tomorrow Together, Miss Jewell Garrett and the girls in the F.H.A. Club studied the basics of good homemaking, attended F.H.A. rallies at Cullowhee, held a donut party for the faculty, sold calendars for a spring trip, and participated in programs designed for future homemakers. These activities not only provided experience for the members, but also alerted them to the situations of people less fortunate than themselves. Monogram Happiness to a Monogram Club member is a gallon of water and a tube of Ben Gay. These students are important whos at M.H.S. Coaches Watson, Postell, and McCombs are the sponsors of this dub. Mad Scientist and Biology Club Surrounded by Erlenmyer flasks and test tubes, science enthusiasts gathered to form the Mad Scientists and Biology Club. Science projects and talk of photography dominated the dub time. 51 Spirited Youth Interesting speakers and lively discussions on various topics stimulated the Spirited Youth Club meetings. Subjects ranging from the end of the world to present day issues were covered. The highlight of the year came at Christmas when the dub entertained and gave presents to four adopted children. 52 Library Science Stamping books, filing cards, collecting fines and helping other students, were only a few of the tasks which kept the members of the Library Science Club occupied. In addition to this busy schedule, the members found time to enjoy the programs given by local speakers. Chess Chess Club members associated with Kings, Queens and Bishops during their dub time. The major goal of the dub was to provide friendly competi- tion between chess enthusiasts. Although this was a new club this year, many students joined it. Club Sponsor is Mr. David Newsome. 54 Spanish Under the patient tutoring of Mrs. Karen Way- man, the members of the Spanish Club broadened their knowledge of the Spanish speaking countries. Oik! 55 Up-dating the concession stand was one of the Beta Club's first activities this year. A humiliating ini- tiation suffered by new members soon followed. La ter, an effort was made to pay an old dub debt by holding a bake sale and the Book Fair. A dinner honoring graduat- ing Beta members, and the annual convention in Asheville ended a success- ful year. . DECA Going to school half a day and working the other half may not be your bag, but the DECA Club members seem to enjoy it. Debbie Voyles is President; Debbie Rich, Vice-President; Robert Garland, Reporter; Wanda Roland. Historian. Mr. James Roberts is the sponsor. fl Y DECA TRAIHI i Attired in long lavender dresses and dark Sunday suits, the chorus brought joy and inspiration to the hearts of many listeners. Under the direction of Mrs. Mozelle Puett, the chorus performed a series of programs for school assemblies, and various religious and social groups. Also, at the end of the year, they provided special music to compli- ment the graduation exercises. 58 Crafty Fingers and Piano A lazy moment never captured any of the members of the Crafty Fingers Club. Knitting and crocheting occupied much of the dub's time. From the year's activities none of the members will be able to forget the words knit one, pear! one, drop a stich, add a stich ... The Piano Club do their thing tickling the old ivories to various types of music. With the assistance of Mrs. Puett these girls have learned to play the piano. Who knows? Mrs. Puett may have produced another Liberace. 59 Junior Civitan The students concerned about their future and the welfare of the people around them unite to form the Junior Civitan Club. The officers are: Martha Singleton, President; Karen Morris, Vice- President; Marlene Hughes, Secretary; Nan Wim- pey, Reporter. Sponsor was Mr. George Hall. 60 Golf, and Quill and Scroll Society If golf happens to be your bag, the Golf Club is the dub for you. These boys had the opportu- nity to learn the fundamentals of golfing and improve their technique. Mr. Bob Jordan is the sponsor of this dub. The Quill and Scroll Society took over where the journalism class ended by finishing last minute stories for the Boomerang, proofreading the paper at the Scout office, and making detailed checks of annual meterial. Even sitting around talking was deemed a luxury by the members since any gossip usually found its way to the Boomerang's Hot Line. 61 Student Council Changes occurred at M.H.S. when the Student Council went into action. Among its accomplish- ments were the presentations of Christmas and Spring dances, the installment of a pay phone and lockers, and a more liberal dress code. 62 Speech and Drama Masters of imitation, the Speech and Drama Club developed individual talents and abilities through visits to study stage productions at W.C.U., experiments with stage makeup, and finally through intra-dub performances of various skits. c thl etics Every person is responsible for all the good within the scope of his abilities, and for no more, and none can tell whose sphere is the largest. 64 —Gail Hamilton VARSITY: Front Row, left to right: Charlie Rogers, Chris McConnell, Thad Laney, Willie Brown, Perry Hughes, Randy Jefferies, Barry Hughes, Tooty Moore, Dwight Bennett, Mike Rose. The night was dear and warm, and the Bulldogs were playing a winning game when the halftime buzzer sounded. All at once the night seemed to take on a magical quality as the band began to play Love Story, and the homecoming court with their escorts started across the field. A hush swept the crowd; then a burst of excitement as Miss Ann Braswell was crowned Homecoming Queen, 1972. The boys worked diligently most of the sum- mer trying to keep in shape. Be- sides being a lot of work, basket- ball is enjoyable, worthwhile and burns up a lot of energy. For the past two years our school has placed high in the Smoky Mountain Con- ference at all meets. M.H.S.
