Mem- bers of the Council sometimes disagree, but they usually manage to come to a solution that is in the best interest of the entire student body. Student Council sponsors are Mr. Charles Smith and Mr. Felix Palmer. I ' p,I ' p( and Away The Aviation Club was the highest flying organization at M.H.S. The members received instructions in the classroom and then they headed for the airport to test their skills. When they were not flying, they usually watched films. 27 Jo 11y Green Giants The F.F.A. Club is a nationally affiliated organization established to help boys who are interested in agriculture. Scientific means of forestry and farming are learned. In addition to their green thumb activities, the boys have sundry other projects which include enter- ing contests measuring various skills such as tool, land, and livestock judging. Around campus the F.F.A. boys have helped build steps to the softball field, helped put up curtains in the office, and helped prepare the lunchroom for the foot- ball banquet. This dub is one of the hardest working dubs in school. Other projects included being hosts to a F.H.A. workshop and having a cake decoration demonstration. Mem- bers of the F.H.A. Club are pro- moters of the joys and satisfactions of homemaking. Their advisor is Miss Jewel Garrett. 29 Working Is Part of Learning The DECA Club is always on the go. Although most of the members work at various jobs throughout the area, they planned several trips, picnics, and din- ners. At Christmas the dub sponsored the election of Becky Jo Earner as the 1971 D.E. Christmas Queen. Big M” The members of the Monogram Club were the athletes of M.H.S. They worked hard to earn the letters they wear proudly on their sweaters and jackets. Of course, there was always the much dreaded initiation to go through before really having the right to display them. Sponsors of the dub were Coaches Terry Postell and Jim McCombs. This club is always devising new methods to earn money they need to spend on their worthwhile pro- jects. Mr. Hall is the sponsor of the Jr. Civitan Club and is always en- couraging its members to do their best. 32 I he Shape of Things to Co me The Careers Club was formed after Christmas for the freshmen that did not take . V. Field trips were made to the different industries throughout the area. The members learned about the many fields open to them when they finish school. Awful Lot of I rou lie The Quill and Scroll Society was reinstated this year, there having been a chapter chartered several years ago. Most of the dub meet- ings were spent trying to meet annual deadlines. The Quill and Scroll was also known for its abun- dant refreshments that were shared with anyone who happened to drop in. Fickle F i tig e r ec h o u r Piano Club members began the year learning the basics. Mrs. Puett said, You would be surprised what we learn in Piano Club. The girls can now play a simplified version of Romeo and Juliet. Spi rite A Yon tli Club The newly formed Spirited Youth Club was designed to openly share beliefs and opinions about God. At each meeting a different member gave his personal views on a particular topic. Discussions on miracles, the end of the world, and morals were extremely mean- ingful. Activities included giving gifts to underprivileged families at Christmas. The dub's sponsor was Mr. Charles Smith. 37 The (J u i et Colics The Library Club was designed to help students of the school become more familiar with the library, its books, and functions. The dub also aided in the financial responsibility of the binding of worn books. By selling Brag Books, the members were able to pay their way to the NCHSLA meeting at Western Carolina University. Library Club sponsor was Mrs. Emma Louise Minor. This chapter of the National Beta Club was established to promote the ideals of honesty, service and leader- ship. Beta also serves as a reward for academic achievement, and to encourage and assist students to continue their education after high school. The Beta Club's main project of the year was the book fair, but when will the books arrive??? . . . only time will tell. 39 I he Nature Lovers? The nature trail at M.H.S. is kept up-to- date with the help of the Biology Club. Along with the continuing work on the nature trail, members have been studying the symptoms and effects of drug abuse. Mrs. Geraldine Meadows, sponsor, has been very helpful in giving informative advice. President, Mike Godfrey; Secretary, Danny Wilson; Reporter, Gail Kephart; Vice-President, Tom Ellis; Treasurer, Ronnie Wilson (not oictured). 40 At ad Scientists Trip Out Initiation of new members is a must for the Science Club. Old members always come up with new ideas that are edu- cational and comical. The dub has had various fund raising projects. The money will be used to cover the expenses of a trip in the spring, hopefully to Florida. Mrs. Kirby has been concerned with seeing that the members learn more about science through the different pro- grams at their meetings. Softballs the Name of the C jcitne Softball team members make up most of the Intramural Club. During dub meetings the team practiced and planned their strategy for a winning season. There were no officers in this dub because each girl shouldered a share of the responsibility. Miss Sue Reynolds was the sponsor. 42 Alajorcttcs Spin Again The 1971 majorettes helped give the pep rallies that added spark of spirit they needed. Football halftimes and parades were also highlighted by their appear- ance. The only senior on the squad this year was Pam Alexander. Mrs. Hendrix's senior English class has studied literature in various forms: Beowulf, Macbeth and mythology. (Ye gods!) 56 W hat Can You Saif? The journalism class of MHS work- ed diligently on the Boomerang and the Kanuhsheta. Mrs. Garrett's junior English class endured the hardships of writing term papers while Mrs. Burch's English 103 wrestled with expanding their vo- cabularies. 57 The A nswers to I omorrow Mrs. Gault's Spanish was con- cerned mostly with learning the fundamentals of the language, while Spanish II students used the lab to acquaint themselves with its fluent application. Bottom Right, Mrs. Postell's sophomore English class is taught the fundamentals of basic grammar. At i rc in Today s hducation Mr. Palmer's mechanical drawing and math analysis classes gained an awareness and appreciation of the immense contribution of math- ematics to mankind. Mr. Smith's reading improvement class read a variety of literature, including clas- sic comic books. 59 7 ime, Socicty, or Miss Reynold's geography class made use of their time exploring our world, while Mrs. Snow ex- plored the world of M.H.S. through Algebra and Trig. Mr. Hall strived to make each student think and become an active citizen in our nation and world. 60 Unlimited L essons Miss May's art class provided the individual with an opportunity to develop his creativity. Mrs. Mea- dow's biology class studied other creations under the microscope. In Math Analysis the creation of num- bers were put to practical use. 61 Science an J P. E. In Mrs. Kirby's chemistry class the stu- dents were made aware of livings things, their properties, and the chemical com- position of the material world. Her physics class got a broad comprehension of the physical world around them. Mr. Hendrix's physical science class studied the entire science field in general. 62 Keep Us I read in’ Mr. Poste 11 taught classes this year that studied the development of life and others that aided in that development, in his P. E. class daily exercises helped in the develop- ment of strong bodies. His biology class studied the development of life in its various forms. His ad- vanced P. E. class was made up mostly of our athletic teams. 63 Putting It Mrs. Ray's Typing class learned the basic principles of typing. Don't look at your hands! She prepared her Shorthand class for a business or office vocation, while Shorthand II students continued their advanced study and office practice. 64 All I ogether Mr. McCombs economics class studied money management while his Democracy in Action class studied how the govern- ment spends it. In his P.E. class, he strived to develop a better individual, physically, mentally, and socially. 65 D.E. students prepared them- selves for a career with on- the-job training. M.H.S. agri- culture boys helped our school with their various projects. The results of the classes' study and teamwork have won them state-wide recognition. 66 Mrs. Bristol's classes painted, made candles, and learned a- bout the different vocations that they may pursue. Mrs. McConnell's Typing II class continued their typing skills by practicing daily drills. Her Basic Business class prepared themselves to take their places in the highly technical world of business. 67 Road C an Miss Reynolds taught her P.E. stu- dents sportsmanship, health educa- tion, and First Aid. Her geography class was taught the physical, poli- tical, and economic aspects of dif- ferent countries. The primary pur- pose of driver's education was to develop the learner's ability to safe- ly operate an automobile. 68 Be T rave led Every phase of home life was stressed in home economics. Girls in this course learned to budget time, money and energy. In library science some students stayed busy keeping books in their proper order on the shelves while others mended books and wrote and collected fines, and others added to the general confusion. 69 Like to Music filled the Round-house when Mrs. Puett's chorus began this year. Old songs and new were sung as Mrs. Puett directed and Thelma Ledford accompanied on the piano. Mrs. Puett's psychology class studied understanding human behavior. 70 the World to Sin The band of MHS added color, support, and entertainment to our various activi- ties. It was led by the drum majorette, Susan Hatchett. All-State Band members were chosen: Dianne Arp and Eva Killian. The team consisted mostly of freshmen who showed a lot of promise for the future. They ended the season with a 5-3 record, and many moved up to the varsity for the last game against Cleve- land. J. Wayne Watson Coaches Jim McCombs Wayne Watson's first year at Mur- phy produced a fine girts' basket- ball season with a regular season record of 16-4. Coach Watson came to Murphy from Hiwassee Dam, where he coached the boys' team in 1969-70. Jim McCombs has been the head basketball coach since 1963 and became Athletic Director in 1965. His varsity boys' team had a much improved season despite their dis- advantage in height. Their regular season ended with a 11-9 record. 90 .
