Prologue This is a year in the history of Murphy High School and in the lives of some 500 students. Our school is small, but it's a very important part of the lives of a lot of people now; and it's been important to people who are now settled, established adults, pillars of the community. Everyone that passes through here leaves something of himself behind. You can't always see it, but it's there. In this book, we're going to show you our school. We want you to see the daily life as well as the big things that everyone hears about,because the ordinary is important to us. You have to know our day-by-day routine before you can understand our feelings, and therefore, our youth. We want to put it all down here so that we can never forget, as we grow older, this period of our lives. Shakespeare said All the world's a stage. This is our world, and with apologies to Mr. Thornton Wilder, here's our drama. We want to show you the ambitions, the joys and the sorrows of the students here. But can we repioduce in a book the anticipation of a football game, the long warm afternoons in c I a s s ro om s , the d es p e ration before important exams, and the fierce loyalty to the school? We will know that we are s u c c es s ful if twenty years from now, an ex-student of this school looks through this yearbook, reads it, and says, You know, that's exactly the way it was!

Director Mr. John Jordan has been superintendent of Murphy City Schools for three years. He has a B. S . degree from Western Carolina University and an M . A . degree from Columbia University. As director, Mr. Jordan is kept pretty busy coaching the actors and keeping up with the paperwork. Since he does work hard, he deserves his regular afternoon coffee break. Mr. Jordan's wife is named Mary, and they have three sons. In our school, we like to know the facts about our leaders. Stage Manager Mr. John Thompson, principal, also relaxes after a hard day of minding the stage by joining Mr. Jordan for a cup of coffee. Seeing that everything runs smoothly in MHS is quite a headache! Since we're giving all the facts, we'll add that Mr. Thompson has a B.S. degree and an M.A. degree from Western Carolina University. From the school of experience he is an expert on adolescence! His wife is named Docia, and they have two daughters and one son. 8
