Mr. John A. I hompson Pri ncipci! To the students of Murphy High School: Americans are justifiably proud of their public schools, which have turned a nation of semiliterate farmers and immigrants into the world's most com- petent people in less than a century. Tomorrow's educational process may be quite different, but likely it will be all-encompassing, almost from the cradle to the grave. Our troublesome world presents a monumental task to organized society. The focus of this task is an education, for all people of all ages, as a continuing process. At every hand, we hear of problems which can only be solved through education. Our world today, measured in terms of instant communications, minutes to destruction, and hours of circumference, is immensely more complex than when we were first introduced to it. Fortunately for man, it is evidence of his most commendable nature that he rises to challenge, and few, if any of us, given the chance, would return to a safer and slower pace. People of all ages are the prime ingredient in the educational mix. Most importantly, our hopes lie in developing the talent of our youth. It has been said that... a social order is stable so long as it can give scope to talent and youth. Youth itself is a talent—a perishable talent. We have a challenge, not a choice. John A.
