For ten years Murphy High School has been blessed with Mr. Felix E. Palmer. A graduate of Young Harris College with an A. A, and Western Carolina College with a B.S. in math and science, Mr. Palmer has headed our math depart- ment since 1962. His little bit of humor enlivens algebra, geometry, and trigonometry courses. His we I I-d isciplined classes are seldom dull, for his explanations are interesting. The work is kept challenging, but not frustrating. He is concerned with his students' progress, not only in his classes, but in the outside world also. Outside the c I assroom he is often busy with extra- curricular activities. Besides b e ing an enthusiastic class sponsor and the ch ie f popcorn popper fixer, he shows immense talent as traffic director. In acknowledgement of Mr. Palmer's excel lence as a teacher, interest in students, and evident school spirit, we dedicate this 1967 KANUHSHETA. 6

Atr . ohn lordan S it peri tit end cut In a message to Congress in December 1862, President Lincoln said, The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present—'as our case is new, so we must think and act anew. We must dis- enthrall ourselves. You boys and girls of Murphy High School are living now at a time when the speed and magnitude of action far o u ts t r ips any period of the past. Your potentialities for good or evil are highly magnified by the tools of power that are yours to command. In no previous period of history has it become so vitally necessary for survival that we know the right and choose to do it. We have tried in school to give you a true sense of moral values with the knowledge that they will be of immeasurable value to you. Your advantage in training carries with it a responsibility to preserve and strengthen the principles and ideals that have made this country the bulwark of freedom in the world. True, we can't live in the past, but we can learn from it. Each of us has the chance to be constructive. Each of us has the chance to make change a force for good and for enlightenment. The future of our country and the nature of our society depend upon you. I hope we can always be proud of you. Best wishes, John Jordan Superintendent
