Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1967 volume:

Alma At ater Where the Carolina foothills Rise to meet the sky. Where the streams from Lake Hiwassee Gently wander nigh, Proudly where our Halls of Learning Stand as years go by. Proudly, too, we remember Days of Murphy High. Still the inner ear of mem'ry Hears the cheering game; Still where our team and talents Led the school to fame; Still we hear the sounds of learning Echo in our ears; Still a rich unfolding wisdom Echoes through the years. Hail to those who passed before us Through the Halls of Truth; Hail to those who follow after Through the years of youth; Hail to those who Journeyed with us. Bound by friendship's tie Hail to thee, our ALMA MATER — Hail to Murphy High! AAAAAAAAAAA I ab e O SENIORS 15 4 For ten years Murphy High School has been blessed with Mr. Felix E. Palmer. A graduate of Young Harris College with an A. A, and Western Carolina College with a B.S. in math and science, Mr. Palmer has headed our math depart- ment since 1962. His little bit of humor enlivens algebra, geometry, and trigonometry courses. His we I I-d isciplined classes are seldom dull, for his explanations are interesting. The work is kept challenging, but not frustrating. He is concerned with his students' progress, not only in his classes, but in the outside world also. Outside the c I assroom he is often busy with extra- curricular activities. Besides b e ing an enthusiastic class sponsor and the ch ie f popcorn popper fixer, he shows immense talent as traffic director. In acknowledgement of Mr. Palmer's excel lence as a teacher, interest in students, and evident school spirit, we dedicate this 1967 KANUHSHETA. 6 DMINISTRA TfON AND FACULTY Echo in our ears Atr . ohn lordan S it peri tit end cut In a message to Congress in December 1862, President Lincoln said, The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present—'as our case is new, so we must think and act anew. We must dis- enthrall ourselves. You boys and girls of Murphy High School are living now at a time when the speed and magnitude of action far o u ts t r ips any period of the past. Your potentialities for good or evil are highly magnified by the tools of power that are yours to command. In no previous period of history has it become so vitally necessary for survival that we know the right and choose to do it. We have tried in school to give you a true sense of moral values with the knowledge that they will be of immeasurable value to you. Your advantage in training carries with it a responsibility to preserve and strengthen the principles and ideals that have made this country the bulwark of freedom in the world. True, we can't live in the past, but we can learn from it. Each of us has the chance to be constructive. Each of us has the chance to make change a force for good and for enlightenment. The future of our country and the nature of our society depend upon you. I hope we can always be proud of you. Best wishes, John Jordan Superintendent Mr. John A. I hompson Pri ncipci! To the students of Murphy High School: Americans are justifiably proud of their public schools, which have turned a nation of semiliterate farmers and immigrants into the world's most com- petent people in less than a century. Tomorrow's educational process may be quite different, but likely it will be all-encompassing, almost from the cradle to the grave. Our troublesome world presents a monumental task to organized society. The focus of this task is an education, for all people of all ages, as a continuing process. At every hand, we hear of problems which can only be solved through education. Our world today, measured in terms of instant communications, minutes to destruction, and hours of circumference, is immensely more complex than when we were first introduced to it. Fortunately for man, it is evidence of his most commendable nature that he rises to challenge, and few, if any of us, given the chance, would return to a safer and slower pace. People of all ages are the prime ingredient in the educational mix. Most importantly, our hopes lie in developing the talent of our youth. It has been said that... a social order is stable so long as it can give scope to talent and youth. Youth itself is a talent—a perishable talent. We have a challenge, not a choice. John A.
