Miss Maria Louise Travis, yearbook sponsor, has directed the KANUHSHETA through many conflicts since its birth in 1953. We recognize and request that all gratitude goto this capable person for her very excellent guidance and her many extra hours of labor upon these pages. Perhaps our diligent efforts, in spite of the black cat's crossing our path, will in some way help you to retain pleasant memories of this near catastrophic year. 3 Dedication A native of North Carolina, Mrs. Margaret Summersett Carter is truly an asset to the faculty of Murphy High School. As Chairman of the Social Studies Department, Mrs. Carter holds an A . B. degree from Catawba College, Salisbury, North Carolina. Through Mrs. Carter's helpful training, students learn effective means of developing the attitudes and ideals essential for democratic living. For eight years she has helped us realize the meaning of our great heritage, and has taught us to fully appreciate it. She has shown her interest in the activities of student participation by helping with the Student Council for many years. Her inexhaustible concern about the future of our students is emphasized by her aid as Director of Guidance. The Journalism class of 1965 is proud to dedicate this thirteenth edition of THE KANUHSHETA to you, Mrs. Carter. The Staff 4 AND FACULTY MR. The library is a very important place—a place where students can find material for term papers; a place to which one rushes a few days before book reports are due and tries frantically to find a short book on the list; and, of course, a meeting place for couples and friends where the daily gossip can be shared. The project was buying a typewriter for the library this year and library students were busily engaged in raising the funds to do so. Many new books have been purchased to aid the students in writing research papers, book reports, and other needed information required throughout the year. During National Education week, the library placed a poster on display downtown. This was only one of the many outstanding activities that the library participated in this year. 10 MRS. MINOR Pen and Ink Sketches, left to right: Brenda Stalcup, Carol McRae, Harry Moore, Mary Sue Amos, Brenda Crisp, Dianna Little, and Mike Jordan. Art Develops Self- Repression ... Here pupils learn the basic principles of color and design and how to apply them. Art gives students an opportunity to learn order and beauty, to develop self-expression, to release tension, and to control emotions. This year's class studied units in Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Modern Art. Students learned to identify at least a hundred of the world's famous paintings and to name the artist and his nationality. The department purchased a new slide projector, screen, and slide cabinet with approximately a hundred slides to begin a slide library. One of the unusual activities demonstrated by the art depart- ment was the clothesline art exhibit held in downtown Murphy dur- ing National Education week. Students took hourly turns sketching on the island in the square. 1 1 MISS TRAVIS Chemistry Class, Period 3, left to right: Knox Singleton, Johnny Hatchett, Jimmy Morgan, Perry Brown, and Mr. Thompson Science Prepares Tomorrows’ World... In the world of tomorrow the complex and intricate world of science will be the most important field. The scientist explains the many curious everyday occurrences, conquers many diseases, and replaces the ignorant mind with knowledge. Students in biology extended their knowledge by research projects and numerous field trips in the spring. Each student investigated a project of special interest to him. Chemistry classes visited the town's water plant. Each member of the advanced biology class worked on a special project which was displayed at the end of the year. Earth science students exhibited outstanding rock and mineral exhibits. The science department ordered a radioactivity counter, a Crane Boom, and a Jolly Balance through funds available from the N. Spanish Is Our Only Foreign Language... Spanish is the only foreign language taught in Murphy High School this year. Spanish helps to develop better English skills and speech and to broaden our horizons of other peoples and other lands. The first-year Spanish classes kept scrap-books of Spanish speaking countries. Students decorated for a Christmas party in Spanish motif using the traditional pinata. On Valentines' Day the Spanish II classes put their valentines with Spanish verses written on them on the bulletin board. Each class has a Spanish Club meeting every three to four weeks. At the beginning of the second semester, the first-year classes elected of- ficers and conducted business in Spanish. Programs included games, songs and skits in Spanish. 15 MRS. GAULT College Algebra and Trigonometry, Period II class, left to right: Mary Jones, Gordon Hall, Bob Hill, Luke Nave, Mr. Palmer, Sarah White, Harold Wilson, Don Ramsey, and Danny Mundy. Mathematics can be fun ... The math department has become an increasingly important department in our school curriculum. Mathematics meets the needs of this age of computers, science, and space exploration. Students receive preparation for this field through courses in general math, business arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, and plane and solid geometry. MR. PALMER Many projects were carried on throughout the year. Field pro- jects in leveling were used to find the height of the school above sea level. Individual projects and term papers were required in Al- gebra III and Trigonometry. Some students taught a unit of new math to the lower grades as individual projects. New equipment including T-squares and tapes, was purchased through the N. D. E. A. Many new books on mathematics were also added to the library. 16 mr. McDonald MR. Jane Whitley plays the piano. Music spells moods and magic... The music department enriches our school with general music classes, chorus, and band. Boys and girls from the general music classes presented an assembly program of Christmas music prior to the holidays. They also sang for the Tri-State Methodist hour on WKRK. Ten albums of records and a number of large wall charts of orchestra instruments were pur- chased through the library. The band, wearing new uni- forms, presented a variety of worthwhile programs this year in- cluding concerts for Christmas, mid-winter, and spring. 18 MR. REYNOLDS MRS. PUETT MR. RAMSEY AGRICULTURE IV PERIOD II Vocational Agriculture makes prgress . .. Agriculture is a very important industry, and the methods learned by the students of the vocational agriculture department prepare them for the work and development of their future farms. The main branches of agriculture studied include crop-growing, dairying, poultry, swine raising, and fruit growing. The Agriculture Department sold peanuts and purchased $150 worth of mechanical tools. Ag boys trans planted pine trees hoping to get new projects started. Otherwise, very little new equipment was purchased. The Land Judging Team won first place in Land Judging in the Nantahala Federation of the F. F. A. The team then represented the Nantahala Federation at the State Contest held April 10, 1965, at Fuquay Springs, North Carolina. The Vocational Agriculture class exhibited the internal com- bustion engine during National Education Week. The materials for this exhibit are now used in teaching Farm Machinery and Equip- ment in the department. The boys have overhauled several engines during the year along with numerous pieces of farm equipment. 19 MR. RAMSEY English IV, Period 6, left to right: John Hall, Mrs. Burch, Judy Brittain, C. W. Cavender, Marie Mashburn, Wayne Watson, Linda Mack. English develops the capacity for independent thought... English is much more than just a study of parts of speech or sentence structure. There is more involved than a study of authors and their works. English is our language, our medium of thought and communication. In our English classes we strive to learn accurate and effective communication and develop the capacity for clear and in- dependent thought. We explore the various topics of class work and go into related areas as well, asking not only “What does this mean? but also What does this mean to me? Each student is encouraged to express hmself and his own ideas as long as this is orderly and contributes to the learning of the whole class. It is not the desire of teacher to advocate a particular point of view but rather that each student find his own point of view while developing a tolerant atti- tude for honest differences of opinion. Students develop a sense of honesty especially to self, partiotism for their country, and faith in their own future. Teachers stressed creative writing to describe action, emotion, ideas, and beliefs, and placed emphasis on a strong vocabulary. Students worked on authentic scrapbooks; memorized the Pro- logue to The Canterbury Tales and mimicked the What's My Line and College Bowl programs using ideas and questions from the clas- sics in their texts. One class wearing colorful oriental costumes pre- sented The King and I with an original mural for the background setting. The department purchased a new record player for the Many Voices records which supplement the literature texts. MRS. SUE BENSON MRS. SIZE 21 ENGLISH IV MRS. HENDRIX PERIOD III MR. STUDENI mutuem ( Facing’ tbe problems of a democracy ... The Social Science Department offers students a basic knowledge of the people in distant countries; of the many past struggles to attain a democratic government; of the efforts to maintain its principles; of the problems facing the nation; and the many other difficulties that are confronted by government. Eight students took The National United Nations Examination to compete for scholarships. Economics classes studied a unit on Banking, especially the Federal Reserve Bank, in relationship to coins and currency back to 2500 MRS. CARTER MR. SHIELDS MR. McCOMBS 23 WORLD HISTORY PERIOD IV MRS. DYER B . C. The Sociology Class held a series of discussions on dope addiction as an outgrowth of a chapter in the textbook. The department purchased two new map series for the U. S. History classes and used enumerable films available on subjects pertinent to all social studies classes. Mr. Shields' American Problems class took a field trip to the Forest Service at Hiwassee Dam to see a 400 acre farm. Several classes bought and sold stock using the Dow Jones Market Report. Perry Brown showed slides from his European tour last summer to the World History class. 24 MRS. ETHEL BENSON MRS. DYER CURRENT HISTORY MR. SHIELDS PERIOD IV ECONOMICS MRS. This department not only prepares students for competition in the ever-expanding business world, but also teaches them skills that are useful in everyday life. It is the aim and responsibility of the Business Department of Murphy High School to provide for the students a curriculum that will give them the proper training and develop- ment they need in the business world. During Education Week the business students of Murphy High School displayed their ability to take and transcribe letters for the public on one of the islands of the public square in town. Through this special exhibit the business students were able to explain the procedures followed in high school in trying to meet employment standards. It also helped to make the businessmen aware of the school's endeavors and consciousness of its 26 MRS. RAY mrs. McConnell MR. GASAWAY achievements. The business classes have assisted the Murphy Branch of the Asheville School of Technology in typing stencils and materials to be used in their classroom teaching. Students have also acted as secretaries to the faculty when stenographic work was needed, as well as assisting many civic organizations in advertising campaigns of community needs. Stenographic services have been rendered to the churches when called upon in that capacity. A one-week work project was carried on in different offices and stores in town. Seniors who plan to work after graduation participated in this project. In order to teach more students, the business department added 15 new Remington Typewriters this year. Journalism lends variety to campus activities Very few people realize the hard work and mental anguish involved in publishing a school paper and year- book. In addition to this very demanding task, the journalism class studies the history and principles of journalism. Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, two famous American journalists, are studied to enable the students to improve their publications. This year Russell Caldwell, Marie Mashburn, Becky Jo Ray, and Sarah White attended the Editors' Roundtable. Among all the schools participating in Western North Carolina, the Kanuhsheto won second place and the Boomerang won third place honors. The typewriter is one piece of equipment that is essential in pre- paring a school paper and yearbook. The department purchased two new typewriters making a total of four available for journalism students. The main projects of the Journalism Department are to publish the school paper and yearbook. These two sources of news seem to lighten the campus with a variety of fun-filled entertainment. 28 MISS TRAVIS Left to right: Miss Garrett, Jane Whitley, Deborah Elliott, Frances Mintz, Dorothy Roberts. Girls develop homemaking arts and skills ... The Home Economics Department trains girls to cook, sew, plan menus, and care for children. Through this training they are prepared for managing their own homes later in life. Films are shown to help the girls understand such things as cutting out a pattern, setting the table, and cooking well-planned meals. While studying housing, one class visited four new homes in the Community. F. H. A. delegates attended a rally at the Clyde Erwin School in Asheville. New birch cabinets were installed in the department. Two Gen- eral Electric stoves, a refrigerator, small equipment, silver and china were also purchased for each of the three unit kitchens. During National Education Week the Home Economics Department had a sewing demonstration up town to show the public their talented skills. 29 MISS GARRETT GIRLS' P. E. CLASS MRS. DYER PERIOD III Physical Fitness is a growing necessity... The Physical Education Department of Murphy High School is a vital instrument in building the body and in developing good characteristics through ideal sportsmanship. Their objectives are to administer athletics in such a way as to build rational and wholesome sentiments, habits, and traditions of the students of this school; to estab- lish educational leadership; and to create public interest in support of athletics. Students made a series of drawings on the different systems of the body as projects in health. For physical exercise, the P. E. classes played basketball games with two local elementary schoolsand the freshmen varsity members. These are examples of the outstanding activities demonstrated during the year. 30 mr.
