His utter disregard of the obsolete spoon-feeding theory has propelled many budding scientists toward a successful and rewarding future. In a subtle but non-conventional manner, his honest down-to-earth philosophy and genuine sense of humor command the respect of the entire student body. Saying thanks in a small but sincere way, we proudly and gratefully dedicate this volume of the 1961 KANUHSHETA THE STAFF 7 to MR. JOHN THOMPSON. Students and teachers who have never worked on a yearbook never fully know what goes on behind- the-scenes, so to speak. They never see the long days and nights of patient and exacting work that goes into the preparation of copy sheets. They never worry about a missing picture. They never spend endless hours pecking away at an old, much overused typewriter, finishing the final pages which will make the yearbook complete. They never go home with headaches and eyestrain from hours of detailed proof- reading to be sure that every name is spelled correctly. No, they will never, never know. On the other hand, they can never experience that wonderful out-of-this world feeling when the first KANUHSHETA is unpacked either. They won't know how it feels to see our baby as a finished copy and to experience the tingling sensation when we open the cover and first see those beautiful finished pages. Although they will call it their yearbook, it really belongs to us, because only we will ever know the inexpressible joy of creating it. Much credit goes to you as well as to your parents and faculty for your perseverance and achievement. I estimate that from your class of 134 about 50 will continue your education in college. This will leave about 84 to seek immediate employment. You well know that most of these will have to leave Cherokee county to earn a livelihood. I would assure this group that the school follows your pursuits with as much interest as the careers of the college group. I point out to you that business and industry have raised the standards for employable skills. It may be necessary for many of you to take short special training courses. Others may continue to equip yourselves through night school. I challenge each to face the future with the same spirit of co-operation, courtesy, dependability, industry and initiative that you have shown in Murphy High School. Then you will fill a position in the world society with a measure of satisfaction to yourself and a high degree of service to our American way of life. 18 WALTER PUETT ©a® Not only does the guidance director give invaluable assistance to students preparing for college, she helps others in making a wise vocational choice. Counselors work with the idea that each individual is different. The testing programs are set up to indicate whether the person has the ability to learn or perform a given job. After carefully considering personal characteristics and interests, a counselor helps the student analyze himself as far as his work potential is concerned. He is toldwhat his local area has to offer in his scope of interest to help him choose the vocation best suited to his individual interests. Murphy High School is indeed fortunate to have the services of Mrs. Pauline Bault, Director of Guidance for Murphy, Andrews, and Cherokee County. Setting out trees, building fences, and picking up papers are just a few of the practical ways agriculture students have beautified the campus, thus illustrating the usefulness of the work taught in the agriculture department. MR. GLEN PATTON has a B. S. degree from North Carolina State College, Raleigh, North Carolina 22 MR. PATTON MISS TRAVIS Abt 01 A Drawing and painting are the best and most relaxing of all hobbies. More and more people are taking them up. Age makes no difference. Art cultivates one's imagination, increases one's sense of beauty, is lots of fun, and sometimes brings money as well. Creative art gives to a few youngsters experiences which lift them above and beyond themselves into a new world of inspiration and beauty. This in - sight develops a depth of judgment which may contribute to the stability so urgently needed in this topsy-turvy universe. Is not this what the world and the spirit of man needs? 23 MRS. RAY The business department plays an important role in the school curriculum by preparing students for positions in the ever-increasing business world. Business education students are taught Bookkeeping I, II; Shorthand I, II; Typing I, II; General Business, Secretarial Practice, and Business Arithmetic. Through these subjects business students are well-prepared either to enter a business college, or begin work in the business field immediately after graduating. mrs. McConnell Teachers of business education are MRS. FRANCES RAY, who is head of the department; she holds a B. S. degree from Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, North Carolina MRS. BARBARA McCONNELL holds a B. S. degree from Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, North Carolina. MR. FRANK B. GASAWAY has a B.S. degree from Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, North Carolina. The English Department is one of the most important departments in the school, since a good foundation in English grammar and literature is necessary for future success in any field. Students, though they may sometimes doubt the value of nine book reports, a term paper with ten references, and the experience of memorizing a poem written by a long- dead poet; realize the importance of this foundation later in life when they go out into the world on their own. The following English instructors handle a difficult and important job admirably. MISS MARIA TRAVIS, head of the department, is an English major from Middle Tennessee State College, Murfreesboro, Tennessee. MRS. VELMA BURCH has a B.S. degree from Wayland College, Plainview, Texas. MRS. IMOGENE CARR SMITH holds an A. B. degree from the University of Chattanooga, Chattanooga, Tennessee. MRS. SHIRLEY BATES GRAEF, MRS. MARGARET CARTER, MRS. MOSELLE MOORE PUETT, MRS. EMMA LOUISE MINOR, and MR. EUGENE NOVOGRODSKY are also English teachers. GOT French I, II; and Latin I, II, are foreign languages offered in this department. Both of these are important subjects since many English words are derived from both Latin and French. The customs of the French and Romans are learned, too since the language of a people cannot be studied without learning their customs. This year through the National Education Act, the French department received $150 with which they bought a new record player and several French albums. MRS. SHIRLEY BATES GRAEF, French instructor, has an A.B. degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. MRS MOSELLE MOORE PUETT, Latin instructor, holds a Bachelor of Public School Music degree from Oberlin Conservatory, Oberlin, Ohio. ®CMI®N)M ini® Ml Hc®lM®IWIOCS to cmmocimm Sewing, cooking, menu-planning, and child care are outstanding units studied in the Home Economics department. By studying and learning these things, girls are prepared for managing their own homes later in life. One group of girls made costumes for the senior play. Another group held a kindergarten class for pre-school children in order to study their group behavior. In the spring MISS ELOISE McBEE instructed an adult class in elementary sewing. After attending Mars Hill junior college, she graduated from Applachian State Teachers College, Boone, North Carolina. itaiMMOSM CtMi IPygysMds (Pa« AM® This year Murphy High School added to its curriculum a class in journalism. Sixteen enthusiastic seniors are taking this course. These students publish the school newspaper and annual. Several of the members plan to make journalism a career. For the first time in the history of the school, the campus newspaper is being printed regularly. The BOOMERANG highlights the events of the school besides helping the students learn more about journalism, working together, and maintaining happy community relations. THE KANUHSHETA is the other project of the journalism class. Kanuhsheta comes from a Cherokee Indianword meaning dogwood blossom. The dogwood tree in front of the library on the other campus was planted by the senior class of 1953 in commemoration of the first KANUHSHETA. Miss Travis named the annual. Students pay $4.00 per copy for the annual. This covers about half the cost. The remaining amount is raised by the senior class without soliciting or advertising. MISS MARIA TRAVIS is the instructor and advisor of the class. Last summer she was awarded a fellowship to study journalism at the University of Missouri in preparation for this class. 30 CM@@1L T® HdSABY C®WOMy A®® The library is perhaps the most useful department in the school, providing a center of information and study. To add to its efficiency, this year the library has gained about two hundred new volumes, mostly reference books. These books were acquired through donations of either money or books. Library science students, under the capable direction of MRS. EMMA LOUISE MINOR, learn how to run a library smoothly. She received her A.B. degree from Tift College, Forsythe, Georgia. MRS. MINOR 31 ©mPMTMliOT DlCIlOWj IMU® Cbartit In the past five years, with everyone stressing the significance of education in the space age, mathematics has be- come increasingly important in the school curriculum. Algebra, trigonometry, geometry, general math, and business arithmetic provide future engineers and technicians with a good, basic foundation plus some advanced topices in mathematics. Approximately $75 worth of teaching aids and demonstrational equipment was bought in this department through a grant from the National Education Defense Act. MR. PALMER 32 Math instructors are MR. FELIX PALMER, who holds a B. S. degree from Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, North Carolina and MR. E. BRUCE ARMSTRONG who has an A.B.M.E. from Georgia School of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia. MR. ARMSTRONG 33 The music department, besides teaching music and music appreciation to chorus and band students, provides enter- tainment on many occasions. Both the chorus and band have performed in assembly several times and the band, which is composed of high school and elementary students, has given many successful concerts outside of school. They attended Band Day at Clemson, South Carolina, while part of the chorus attended the Mars Hill Music Festival. MR. EDWARD REYNOLDS is the band and chorus director; he has a B.S. degree from East C a ro 1 i n a College, Greenville, North Carolina. The Physical Education department of Murphy High School is instrumental in building good character through physical fitness and sportsmanship. Boys and girls learn to function as a team and learn to get along with others through partici- pating in numerous sports events. COACH RALPH McCONNELL, head of this department has a B.S. andM.A degree from Western Carolina College, at Cullowhee, North Carolina. COACHES DAVID BRISTOL and RANDALL SHIELDS, both instruction in this department, graduated from Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, North Carolina, with B. S. degrees. MR. SHIELDS 35 (Sirs ¥tew §Qii M«iir One of the most interesting phases of the school year is the study of science in chemistry, physics, biology, or general science. In these highly informative courses, valuable information concerning the life of everyday things is gained. This year through the National Education Defense Act, the Science Department purchased $2,000 worth of new equipment ranging from micro- scopes to cloud chambers. This new equipment has certainly added much to facilities of the department. 36 MR. THOMPSON MR. JOHN THOMPSON is the head of this department. He received his B.S. and M. S. degrees from Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, North Carolina. Other instructors are MRS. GERALDINE MEADOWS who holds a B.S. degree from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, North Carolina, and MRS, IMOGENE SMITH. MRS. MEADOWS 37 Social Soma TTimkhi «(ICAN) (rfamFMl The Social Science Department offers an opportunity to study American and World History, geography, civics, and psychology. The school is fortunate to have the facilities for showing films concerning these subjects, since actually seeing facts in a film is more impressive on the mind than just reading them out of a book. By studying American History and Civics, which are compulsory courses, and World History the understanding of American heritage and government is deepened and a knowledge of other lands is broadened as well. 38 Instructore in this department are MRS. MARGARET CARTER who has an A.B. degree from the Catawba College, Salisbury, North Carolina. MR. EUGENE NOVOGRODSKY has an A.B. degree from the University of Miami, Miami, Florida. MR. RANDALL SHIELDS and MR. DAVID BRISTOL are also instructors in this department. TOiOT E)®WllBaS H©yCMO@M Driver's Education teaches good driving techniques. John Snow started the scoring for the Bulldogs when he recovered a Panther fumble in the end-zone. Bobby Weaver passed to Frank Hill for the extra point. The next tally came when Frank Hill climaxed a 98 yard drive by scoring from the seven. Bobby Weaver ran the extra point. Weaver scored the next touchdown, and David Thompson ran the extra point. Frank Hill and David Thompson both scored again. Weaver ran one extra point, and Thompson ran the other. The Bulldogs final score came late in the fourth period when Sammy Duncan raced forty yards into the end-zone. Billy Haney ran the extra point to bring the score to 42-0. The Bulldog defense had a very outstanding game also. BULLDOGS BEAT BRAVES Frank Hill returned the opening kickoff ninety yards to begin the scoring in a 27-6 victory over the Cherokee Braves. David Thompson ran the extra point. Bud Killian went across from the two and Billy Haney wiggled his way in from the twenty-two yard line for two other touchdowns in the first period. Frank Hill ran one extra point and the attempt for the other was unsuccessful. Sammy Duncan scored from the one late in the second period for the final Bulldog touchdown. Mickey Birchfield ran the extra point. BULLDOGS WHIP WILDCATS In the last home game of the 1960 football season the Bulldogs defeated their arch rival Andrews 35-13. David Thompson scored the first touchdown, and Frank Hill caught Bobby Weaver's pass for the extra point. Frank Hill broke loose and raced 45 yards for the second Murphy tally, and Bud Killian, Bobby Weaver, and Frank Hill all scored in the second half. David Thompson ran two of the extra points and Frank Hill ran the other. The Bulldog line showed up very well in this game. MURPHY CRUSHES HAYESVILLE The Bulldogs closed out the regular season by setting Hayesville back 44-0. David Thompson ran two touchdowns and one extra point to give the Bulldogs a 13-0 lead at the end of the first period. Bobby Weaver, Frank Hill, and Randolph Cunningham also ran touchdowns in the first half. Frank Hill ran the only extra point. Sammy Duncan and Tommy Roberts each caught a pass from John Van Horn for the two remaining touchdowns. Neither extra point was good. BULLDOGS SEEK AA TITLE, BOW TO APPALACHIAN The Bulldogs gracefully bowed out of the state AA playoff to the Blue Devils of Appalachian High of Boone. The game was played at a neutral field at Canton. Frank Hill scored from the two, and Bobby Weaver passed to David Thompson for the extra point in the opening minutes of the game. This gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead that they held until the last six minutes of the game. At this point in the game Appalachian scored on a 28 yard pass play, but they were unable to make the extra point. It appeared for a few minutes that the score would be just reversed from last year (7-6 in favor of Appalachian). But the Blue Devils removed all doubt when they again scored on a pass play. This time the extra point was good, bringing the score to 13-7. Time ran out and the game ended with Appalachian winning 13-7.
