The yearbook creates and builds more interest in the school than any other item. Not only is it a vital part of school activity, but it is a monument to the students, officials, and teachers in the school year it covers. The annual is a book of memories for the students, a valuable record for the school, and a priceless possession of every owner to be cherished more and more as time passes on... 7a the, Gla i 1958. . . Greetings: This school year has been one of the most pleasant of all my school experience. One of the most important reasons why this year has been so pleasant is that the members of this Senior Class have been about as fine a group of young people as I have ever known. I am proud of every one of you because of your school spirit and the seriousness of purpose that you have shown toward all your school activities. I am confident that as you leave Murphy High School you will continue to reflect credit upon your Alma Mater. Some of you will choose to continue your education in some college or university. Others will enter immediately upon your life's work. Whatever your choice may be I want to assure you of my best wishes. Sincerely yours, Holland McSwain Page 5 % education MiAA, fluli t McKie, Pe fM,e4. Always a champion in the field of education, and a vitally important figure on our campus, Miss Pegues merits particular attention in this yearbook. Students remember and appreciate her demand for painstaking accuracy and thoroughness. Through her fortitude and perserverance, new fields of learning were opened to them. She set her standards high and made her classes measure up to them. She demanded the very best of each individual and accepted no less. Yet, in her busy schedule, she always managed to find time and patience to help a lagging pupil, no matter how worthless he seemed. Nominated by fellow faculty members and chosen to represent Cherokee County, Miss Pegues was named Teacher of the Year for District I of the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs. We at Murphy High School would in gratitude add our prayer—that the years ahead be filled with health, happiness, and the blessings Miss Pegues so richly deserves. i957-f958 71 14, IAJgsL the, rLj asi. . . ----that the high school moved to new surroundings —a beautiful 218 acre campus overlooking the east entrance to Murphy---- ---that the intercom system and stocking-feet assemblies were first introduced to Murphy High School Page 8 ----that school closed for a whole week when nature did more snowing than the football heroes, and sleds were more popular than hotrods------- ----that Russian Sputniks and our own Explorers blazed a trail in outer space and science held the destiny of the universe within its power— ----that on the homefront athletics gained supremecy when Murphy's victories were many and her losses few---- Page 10 ---that visitors from faraway Ceylon added an exotic touch to our activities. yes, this has been a good year—one we shall never forget. You have had the opportunity to seek knowledge and guidance of qualified teachers; to share failure andsuccess with understanding classmates; to live, to create, and to develop under the influences of democracy in your school. Each of you takes with him from this school the facts, skills, abilities, attitudes, and ideals which have appealed to you most. It is my fondest wish that each of you has been more deeply influenced by the forces of education than is always apparent. I sincerely believe that many values which you may have seemed to note lightly have made an impact sufficient to come to your rescue as the occasion may demand. I have complete confidence in the abilities of the members of this senior class to choose wisely the various courses which are open to you. Good luck in your choice whether it be for a college career or an immediate position in business or industry. WALTER PUETT Page 12 MtiAspJuf, SoUaal 7 4n4 tMJA £ia+t and fyacnltif, MRS. MISS PEGUES MISS TRAVIS UaJi cl+uH Because speech is one of the basic factors in any civilization, English is among the most important courses taught in Murphy High School. The function of the English department is to familiarize students with the fundamentals of grammar, to give a better understanding and appreciation of the many types of literature, and to instill in the minds of students a desire to read and a love for poetry. Teachers in the English department are: MISS JULIET McKIE PEGUES, who is head of the English department, has served as a member of our faculty for eleven years, received both her B. S. and M. A. from the University of Mississippi. MISS MARIA LOUISE TRAVIS graduated from MiddleTennessee State College, Murfreesboro, Tennessee and has taught in Murphy for the past ten years. MRS. EMILY MILLER, who has been a member of the Murphy High School faculty forfifteen years, received her B. S. in education from Mansfield State College, Mansfield, Pennsylvania. Page 18 MRS. GAULT MRS. COSTELLO MRS. BAULT J!.a+Uf4Aa(j,eA, MRS. LUCILLE DRAPER GAULT received both her B. A. and M. A. from the University of Wisconsin. She has been in our English department two years. MRS. EMILY COSTELLO, who came to Murphy Schools two years ago, but became a member of the English department only this year, received her A. B. from Meredith College. MRS. PAULINE BAULT has taught in Murphy Schools for eleven years. For the past seven years she has served as High School Counselor. This year she is teaching two classes of English. She has her A. B. from Carson-Newman College and her M. A. from Western Carolina College. French and Latin are also important to the students of Murphy High School. Through French students are brought closer to our neighbors across the ocean. Since many of our English words are derived from Latin, it helps students especially with their vocabulary. Also a good cultural background is acquired through the study of these languages. Teachers in our foreign language department are: Miss Pegues, Latin; Mrs. Gault, French. M Uluz uUicA Mrs. Case, pictured here with students in her Algebra I class, also teaches Algebra II, general math, and business arithmetic. The aim of her classes is to develop accuracy and speed in computation, to teach the principles of arithmetic and algebra and the applications of these principles, to inspire students with aptitude in this field to continue the study of mathematics, and to prepare them for such courses. She also strives to help her students develop those character and personality traits attributed to a real person. MRS. FANNIE MITT CASE has taught 26 years at various places such as Albemarle, North Carolina, Bryson City, North Ccrolina, Waynesville, North Carolina, and others. She got her A. B. degree at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. Paa 20 MRS. CASE Mr. Palmer, who teaches geometry, algebra, and general math, is seen here with some students in hiscollege algebra class. The aim of the geometry class is to develop a mind for reasoning and more intense thinking; the Algebra I class—to give an introduction and basic knowledge of the tools of algebra; the college algebra class to give a more technical knowledge of the terminology of mathematics as a preparatory for college work; and the general math course is a basic knowledge of the fundamentals of math. MR. FELIX EDWARD PALMER was graduated from Murphy High School in 1949. He attended college at Young Harris College, Young Harris, Georgia, and also at Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, North Carolina, where he received his B. S. degree in mathematics and science. He taught at Long Creek Junior High School, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Also teaching math are MRS. EMILY MILLER and MISS JUDY REYNOLDS. In the world of tomorrow science will become the most important field. Each year it is stressed more and more. Through science, the masses of the world will be fed, clothed, and sheltered. Through science, knowledge will replace superstition and ignorance. Through science, disease will be conquered. Through science, man may become truly free. Murphy High School strives to teach each pupil the place of science in his life, and to prepare those who are interested to take their places in the scientific world. Courses offered are general science, biology, chemistry, and physics. MR. JOHN ALLEN THOMPSON, head of this department, has B. S. andM. S. degrees from Western Carol ina Col lege at Cul lowhee. North Carolina. He has been a faculty member at Murphy High School for eight years, teaching all four science courses. MRS. GERALDINE THOMAS MEADOWS received the B. S. degree from the Woman's Col lege of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina. She has taught general science and biology here for six years. MR. ROBERT T. COBB teaches general science. He has the B. S. degree from California State Polytechnic College at San Luis Obispo, California. He has taught in Murphy High School for three years. Social Science e xa Unvent This department teaches pupils the workings of the government and the society in which they live. It trains them to do their part in managing the United States from the federal government level to their own community government level. Pupils gain a speaking acquaintance with the laws that protect them. They learn «the history and functions of our government. They learn about our relationships to other countries. All the social science courses strive to teach pupils to get along better with all people. Murphy High School requires everyone to take civics and United States history. It also offers world history and geography which are required in some, but not all, courses. MRS. KATHERINE BROWN WELLS taught United States history and civics the first semester of this year. She has an A. B. degree from Western Carolina College at Cullowhee, North Carolina. MRS. MARGARET SUMMERSETT CARTER replaced Mrs. Wells in the social science department. Mrs. Carter has an A. B. degree from Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Other social science instructors are Mr. Robert Cobb, Mrs. Emily Miller, Mrs. Emily Costello, Mr. Felix Palmer, Mrs. Dollie Smart, and Mrs. Barbara McConnell. MRS. CARTER i plufiical £JUcoatia t This d e pa r tm e n t is the pride of Murphy High School. Physical education is offered to every boy and girl. Those who show interest and ability take athletics and train for the teams that represent Murphy High School. Murphy's football team was conference champion, as was the boys' basketball team. The girls' cage team was runner-up in the conference. To play on a school team a boy or girl must observe strict training rules, show good sportsmanship, team spirit, and co-operation. After- school time is practice, not leisure, time for them. mr. McConnell This department builds healthy bodies. It prepares students for competition. It teaches them to accept either victory or defeat graciously. Sportsmanship is stressed above all. The gymnatorium houses one of the finest basketball courts in Western North Carolina. The comfortable locker room and glass blackboards proclaim it one of the most modern as well. The football field, too, is one of the most perfect. There is a practice field adjacent to the playing field. COACH RALPH CHUCK McCONNELL, who is in charge of the football and girls' basketball teams and teaches three physical education classes, has a B. S. and an M. A. from Western Carolina College at Cullowhee, North Carolina. He has taught at Murphy for five years. COACH WILLARD GORDON ISLEY has the B. S. from Appalachian State Teachers College at Boone, North Carolina. He coaches the boys' basketball team. This is his first year at Murphy High School. Page 24 A U, jb ejzait+tter+vt If a medal were given for outstanding service to the school, it should go to the art department. In art, pupils learn the basic principles of color and design and how to apply them. And apply them they do! Each year the art class wins numerous ribbons for individual entries in the Cherokee County Fair. They make posters for the school and many civic organizations. They decorate for Homecoming,College Day, Class Day, the NCEA banquets, and many other activities throughout the year. At Christmas time they make cheerful decorations for hospital trays. No matter how busy they are, they always find time to help a worthy cause. MISS MARIA LOUISE TRAVIS has the B. S. degree from Middle Tennessee State College at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She has been a member of our faculty for the past ten years. MISS TRAVIS Paq 25 GltOAM i GIgAA, This choral group provides music for assembly programs and special meetings. Aside from the service it renders, the main object of chorus is to acquaint the young people with good music and its structure and to train their voices. The chorus learns a wide variety of music-everything from Bach to bop. MRS. EMILY POOLE COSTELLO does a wonderful job conducting the chorus. Pnn MRS. COSTELLO VogcUIosulI AcyUcxilbjsie, The vocational agriculture department prepares boys to begin work on their own farms after graduation or to study forestry or agriculture in college. Its chief purpose is to teach skill and proficiency in farming. In addition to their classroom work, the boys apply the principles they have learned on the 218 acre school farm. There is also school supervision of projects on their home farms. MR, GLENN A. PATTON, head of the department, has a B. S. degree from North Carolina State College inRaleigh, North Carolina. He has taught here for the past ten years. MR. PATTON Page 27 Murphy High is fortunate to have such a fine home economics deportment. There ore two laboratories equipped with the best home appliances—sewing machines, stoves, washing machines, irons, refrigerators, and electric mixers. Each year a first aid session and a child care clinic are held. Girls are taught to run a home efficiently, pleasantly, and economically. They learn to care for children, to build foundations for healthy minds and bodies when children are very small. Home economics students frequently are able to make their own wardrobes by their senior year. The home economics department is indeed a credit to the school. Through this department, the homes of tomorrow will be run better because the housewives and mothers of tomorrow will be better prepared. MRS. DOLLIE MARTIN SMART is in charge of this department. She holds a B. S. degree from Appalachian StateTeachersCollege at Boone, North Carolina, and has taught at Murphy for six years. MRS. SMART Page 28 Jlihstfisuf, Scie tce. The library science department is important, because without it many of the other departments would be greatly handicapped. Library science pupils learn to run a library. They repair, catalogue, shelve, check-out, and inventory approximately 4,500 books that make up the high school library. MRS. PALMER The library is open for student research before school and during the lunch hour as well as during the five regular periods. Besides the daily mechanical work, library science pupils must read at least one book each week, write papers on libraries, books, authors, and related topics, and give short talks on various phases of their study. MRS. MARTHA AXLEY PALMER, the librarian, began her career of teaching at Murphy this year. She received her A. B. degree from High Point College in High Point, North Carolina and her M. A. degree from Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee. Page 29 Business education is that area of education which develops skills, attitudes, and understandings essential for the successful direction of business relationships. Its aim is to provide a curriculum of proper training and development which students will need in the business world. Subjects taught in this department are: Typewriting I, II, Bookkeeping I, II; Shorthand I, II; Business Arithmetic and General Business. The business department began in 1937. Its equipment and standards compare favorably with those of many colleges. More than 200 students passing the rigid requirements of a business course have graduated from Murphy High School. MRS. FRANCES W. RAY, head of the business department, teaches Typewriting I, II and Shorthand I, II. She received her B. S. degree from Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, North Carolina. Mrs. Ray has taught in this department in Murphy for fifteen years. MRS. BARBARA McCONNELL has taught here for four years. She received her B. S. degree from Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, North Carolina. She teaches Bookkeeping, Typewriting, General Business, and Business Arithmetic. MISS JUDITH REYNOLDS holdsa B. S. degree in business education from Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, North Carolina. She came to Murphy High School second semester as a replacemnt of Mr. Jack Tutton. She is teaching Bookkeeping I, II; General Math, and Business Arithmetic. MRS. RAY Page 30 MRS. I've finished my lessons and told my goodbyes And now it's all over I'm ready to cry. At every word spoken I almost give way It makes me remember some brighter school day Or some dull one when in ignorant bliss I idly wished for the day like this- Or moments when I'd given anything If a certain teacher had just taken wing. However, time fooled me The days are now few While I wished for spring Time literally flew! LOUZINE JENKINS Page 120
