PUBLISHED ANNUALLY by the STUDENT BODY of MURPHY HIGH SCHOOL BETTY JEAN BROWN -------------- Editor-in-Chief VIRGINIA AKIN------------------Business Manager JUDY NICHOLS-----------------------Feature Editor TOMMY GENTRY .................Photography Editor BILLIE JANE RUSH______________________ Art Editor ADIR ARONSON ______________________ Sports Editor MISS MARIA TRAVIS--------------- ..Faculty Sponsor To the 1954 graduates of Murphy High School I offer congratula- tions, tinged somewhat with envy. You come upon the stage at a time when the speed and magnitude of action far outstrips any period of the past. Your potentialities for good or evil are highly magnified by the tools of power that are yours to command. In no previous period of history has it been so vitally necessary for survival that we know the right and choose to do it. We have tried to give you a true sense of moral values with the knowledge that they will be of immeasurable value to you. There are ninety of you in the graduating class. There were ninety-seven at the beginning of this year. Three hundred and five children started in the first grade that eventually produced this class. Your advantage in training carries with it a responsibility to pre- serve and strengthen the principles and ideals that have made this country the bulwark of freedom in the world. Well, this is your 1954 Kanuhsheta. For weeks and weeks we slaved in a bee hive of activity dashing hither and yon to record some of the memorable highlights of this school year! In these brief pages we have been able to give only a short summary of the educational progress Murphy High School has to offer its students And yet, we dare to hope that these pictures and paragraphs, brief and sketchy though they be, will serve their purpose in provoking pleasant memories of your school days. Whatever our troubles have been, we have sincerely enjoyed our work; and if you like our efforts, we shall feel repaid. So hurry up and see all of the book. We hope you think it‘s simply wonderful. dedication In grateful recognition of the indomitable spirit, sage council, and unflagging zeal which made this publication possible, the senior class presents this 1954 Kanuhsheta to Miss Maria Louise Travis. Her dedication of time and energy to this annual is ex- emplary of her service to the many students she has instructed. Endowed with many talents, and always willing to render service, she has made the Boomerang an interesting and vital school voice. Counselor, teacher, and friend, we, the Senior Class, thank you. tra tlon HIERONYMUS BUECK Superintendent MRS. SALLY B. STILES Assistant Secretary MRS. HILDA T. Mr. Johnny Jones, from Asheville, was here to fell us all about the flash bulb camera and help us get started in our club. On January 14th we met again and elected officers. The President is H. C. Bueck; the Vice- President is Glenda Ivie Brandon; and the Secretary and Treasurer is Betty Lou Dockery. The purpose of this club is to learn how to develop and print pictures for our Annual and for our own use as a hobby and something worthwhile in our leisure time. There are about thirty-six members in the club. CLUB MEMBERS Adir Aronson, Gordon Bates, Neva Jean Bates, Glenda Brandon, Betty Jean Brown, Bill Browning, H. C. The French Club was founded with the purpose of offering our French students the opportunity to broaden their knowl- edge of the cultural and social achievements of the French people. It is felt that the informality and social nature of such an organization will do much to promote a sincere understanding between the students of our country and France. The French Club was organized October 12, in Mr. Wallace's fourth period French Class. The following Officers were elected: President, Josephine Garrett; Vice-President, Joyce Jenkins; Secretary and Treasurer, Imagean Voyles. There are fifteen members of the French Club and the meetings are held twice monthly. Glenda Brandon, Hedy West, Fred Van Horn, Adir Aronson. Betty Brown, Virginia Aiken, Winnie Little, H. C. Bueck, Harry Mattox, Betty Lou Dockery, Nettie Sue Dockery, Ann Maynor, Jo Garrett, Kathern Zimmerman, Betty Rose, Jean Reed, Billie Jane Rush, Judy Nichols. Sponsor: Miss Maria Travis. The Journalism Club is said to be composed of geniuses, crackpots, and cross-eyed idiots. You, too, might feel the same after a week long struggle to meet the deadline. This year the staff was narrowed down to a small group of eighteen; each truly born with printer's ink in his veins. This club is responsible for editing and printing the Boomerang, Murphy's School Paper, once a month. Each member has been given an opportunity to buckle down and contribute his wit and originality for all to enjoy. According to the ratings and honors earned at the Annual Editor's Roundtable last fall, the efforts of the Boomerang Staff have been rewarding and worthwhile. FRENCH CLUB JOURNALISM CLUB FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA The F. F. A. is a national organization which reaches from the state of Washington to Puerto Rico and from the state of Maine to Hawaii. In their opener with Andrews Murphy had to accept a tie due to an Andrews flash of brilliance and rain. The Bulldogs then took an easy 12-0 victory from Hayesville. In a bitterly contested game at Sylva they finally gave in 7-0. They then romped wild over hapless Robbinsville 30-0. The Bryson City game was figured to be one of the top games of the year, and it was. In this game tempers flared and fine football was played but the Bulldogs lost 13-6. Hayesville then beat the Bulldogs 14-12 in a close game. Murphy took it easy as they beat Cherokee 19-6. They did a trick a Murphy team hasn't done in years, they beat Franklin 26-7, In the final game of the regular season Andrews again tied our boys, this time 0-0. We wound up with a 4-3-2 record. In the post season Senior Bowl the West tied the East 7-7 in a snowstorm. Murphy's Eugene Dockery came away with outstanding player honors. Grace Reece made it twice in a row that Murphy has had a Senior Bowl Queen. Murphy outscored their opponents 1 11 points to 53 and ended in third place in the Smoky Mountain Conference. BASKETBALL BOYS' TEAM Front Row: Eddie Odom, Bobby Stiles, Harry Arrowood, Pearl Johnson, Bobby Phillips. Back Row: Coach Olson, Edd Lovingood, Roy Pipes, Eddie Joe Elliott, Ray Amos, Jimmie McCombs. Not in Picture: Fred Van Horn, Hoyt Zimmerman. The boys opened the 53-54 season with a loss but have been improving steadily since then. As the annual goes to press the team has a 3-5 record. The Bulldogs have depended more on teamwork than on individual play as the record shows. Birder Coffey leads in points made as he has racked up 108 points for a 13.5 average. Bobby Stiles has an 8.5 average. Pearl Johnson has an 8.2 average, Ray Amos has a 7.3 average, while Ed Lovingood has a 6.7 average. The team is not spectacular but we know that it will be fighting for conference honors at the home- stretch of the season. BASKETBALL GIRLS' TEAM First Row: Katrene Gentry, Grace Reece, Kathy Amos, Shirley Dockery, Gwinda Lou Cole, Frances Stiles. Top Row: Jo Garrett, Betty Palmer, Carol Elliott, Anne Kilpatrick, Alice Lovingood, Laurel Bailey. Not in Picture: Nora Swanson, Nettie Sue Dockery, Carolyn Wise. On paper, the outlook for the girls' team looks very dim for the '53-54 season. But what they lack on the won-lost records they make up in hustle, and fighting spirit. Since the team is composed almost entirely of inexperienced girls—no seniors on the team—the Bulldogs are looking forward to great teams in the next two years. As the annual goes to press the team has a 1-7 record. Betty Palmer has been the outstanding forward as she has made 70 points for an 8.7 average. Laura Bailey, the freshman wonder, has made 42 points and hard nUwi- creatures Pampu6 Periona lities op furpLij JJicjli P)cLool BETTY JEAN BROWN Betty Jean is an outstanding senior girl on our campus. Her sunny disposition and ever-ready smile make her tops with all the students. This year she is Editor- in-Chief of the Kanuhsheta and Business Manager of the Boomerang. She is a member of the Student Council and Photography Club. She has belonged to various other clubs during her four years of high school. For two years she was an active member of FHA, and band and chorus. She won numerous ribbons as a representative of her school to Field Day at Cullowhee. In her Junior year she was vice-president of her class and was also a marshal. Betty Jean is always ready to lend a willing and capable hand at any class or school activity. Her depend- ability, untiring efforts and congenial personality will be missed on Murphy's campus next year features GLENDA BRANDON Glenda Brandon, one of Murphy High's brightest senior girls, has accomplished much in high school through her mental capacity and determination to succeed. She participated in the field day activities here and at Cullowhee in her Freshman and Sophomore years. Her Junior year she was a Marshal, assistant editor of the Boomerang, and a member of the Booster Club. As a senior she was Saluta- torian, captain of the Boosters, editor of the Boomerang, and Vice-President of the Photography Club. This attractive blonde has in her four years been an outstanding student in many ways. Her pleasing per- sonality and helpfulness to others has won her the inevitable friendship of many. JUDY NICHOLS Julia Ann Nichols, a lively senior girl with a sparkling personality, has in her four years of high school been an out- standing student in many fields. As a freshman and sophomore she was an active member of the band and a class officer in her second year. In these two years she also participated in the field day activities of Cullowhee and Murphy High. In her Junior year she was on the Boomerang staff and was an attendant of the Football Queen. She was elected Maid of Honor to the Football Queen in her senior year. She is also a member of the glee club, assistant to the Librarian, reporter on the Boomerang, President of the Booster Club, and Feature Editor of the Kanuhsheta. This attractive, vivacious blonde, very neat in appearance, is noted for being polite and courteous at all times. Her perfect manners and willing- ness to co-operate have won her many friends among the students as well as teachers. features KATHERN ZIMMERMAN Kathern Zimmerman, always known to her classmates as The Brain, has easily lived up to her name. Her ex- cellent scholastic record won for her the honor of being chief marshal during her Junior Year, and Valedictorian her Senior Year. Her unusual ability and loyalty made her an active and helpful member of the Boomerang staff during her Junior and Senior years. Always eager to take advantage of opportunities, she partici- pated in Field Day activities here in her freshman year and at Cullowhee in her sophomore year. Kathern's ready smile, and willingness to help have won for her an outstanding place in Murphy High, among both students and faculty. She was secretary of her class in her sopho- more and junior years, and has served on a number of committees. JOYCE JENKINS This talented Junior, the baby of the class, left us to attend school in Georgia. We welcomed her back this year because her pleasant smile, cheerful disposition, and wholesome personality have added much to the class spirit. She was elected vice-president of the French Club. In her sophomore year she sang in the girls' chorus. She is a candid camera fiend and spends much of the time trying to get a picture of Mrs. Miller spanking one of her six-foot cherubs. This year she won a contest sponsored by the seniors for designing book-covers. With her artistic ability, we prophesy an interesting career. beature i HEDY WEST Hedy is an industrious Junior lady who may be found working on class projects during the moments free from class. This is Hedy's first year at Murphy. Last year she attended Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, Florida, where she played flute and piccolo in the High School band and in the Jacksonville Sym- phony. She is one of the assistant editors of the Boomerang and was elected Presi- dent of the Western North Carolina Edi- tor's Roundtable this year. In the recent talent show, sponsored by the Junior Class, she and another student won first place with their accordions. Hedy also plays the piano. Last year in the Florida State Band Contest, she won a Superior rating on the piano. Hedy is Secretary of the Junior Class and is a student of top rank. GERALDINE RUTH SMITH Geraldine Smith is a girl of many talents and is called upon quite frequently to put them to use for her school and class. She willingly does so whether it is playing encore after encore on her accor- dion or helping a Home Ec student on her first garment. She plays several musical instruments, and is a member of the High School band and chorus. She has achieved the Completion Certificate Matthews Standard Graded Course of Music. In addition to these she is out- standing in a number of other activities, of which the 4-H Club ranks first. In this she has done outstanding work. She is also a member of the FHA. Out of the senior class she was selected most versatile. Upon graduation, her many abilities as well as her cheerful disposition will be a great loss to the students and teachers. GRACE MYLINDA REECE Grace Reece, one of Murphy's Oeauties, has won honor for her school as well as winning a hus- band for herself this year and leaving us. She was elected Foot- ball Queen her senior year and later selected out of many com- petitors as Lions' Bowl Queen at the Senior Bowl Football game. She was a member of the chorus and captain of the basketball team.
