The 1953 KANUHSHETA VOLUME I Published by THE STUDENTS of MURPHY HIGH SCHOOL MURPHY, NORTH CAROLINA FACULTY CLASSES ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES FEATURES HISTORY JOANNE ADAMS Business Manager HELEN HANEY Literary Editor ANNETTE STRANGE Art Editor THELMA DOCKERY Assistant Business Manager GENE STILES Assistant Editor DEDICATION The seniors of 1953 wish to dedicate their annual to a man of foresight and unswerving purpose, who always defends what he believes to be right. Having first weighed a question carefully, he decides in favor of that which is best for our school. He is a man who by his sincerity of manner, his liberal expenditure of time, and his untiring efforts has promoted scholastic endeavors and stu- dent cooperation that cannot be surpassed on any campus. So it is with grateful hearts that we dedicate this first KANUHSHETA to our Superintendent, Hieronymus Bueck. FOREWORD With our fingers crossed and a catch in our breath we submit for your approval the new 1953 KANUHSHETA. We have tried by word and picture to put into this volume a cross section of campus life—its works, its aims, its successes. In later years as you turn these pages, if you can recapture the spirit of youth that pervades a high school campus, if you can recall with a chuckle the jaunts and capers of your fellow students, if you can live again your days at Murphy High School, this book will have fulfilled its aim. WHERE WE FIRST MET Hail to the Chief HIERONYMUS BUECK, B.S., M.S. When we go to him with our worries and troubles, his ready smile and understanding nature set us aright and make us feel that our troubles were not real ones in the first place. Under his leadership we are confident that our Alma Mater will always stand as a pillar against mediocrity. ADMINISTRATION HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY Jack W. Barnett, B.S. Mrs. Pauline B. Bault, A.B. Decker, Hobart Mashburn THE SEASON AT A GLANCE Although the Bulldogs turned to the 1952 season with great anxiety, they gained confidence with each successive victory. They won the first three games but were forced to give in to Sylva with a 19-0 score. In the sixth game Murphy outplayed Bryson City but lost 20-0. The Bulldogs took their old rival, Andrews, twice this season. The home-coming game was highlighted by a 48-6 victory. This proved to be Murphy's most successful season in three years as they racked up 114 points to their opponents 89. Finally, to climax the football season, Murphy’s senior players traveled to Bryson City to take part in the Bowl Game with the West winning 9-6 and our own Mildred Taylor was crowned Queen too! This event should be a lasting tribute to the efforts of the senior boys who played their last high school game at Bryson City. LIONS BOWL QUEEN Mildred Taylor HOME-COMING This year’s home-coming can right- fully be termed a perfect ending in spite of foul weather. We won the game and Captain Fred Dalrymple crowned a beautiful queen. A renovated boat became a lovely float ATHLETICS Left: Bill Thompson, Co-Captain; Fred Dalrymple, Captain. Below: Barbara Bhoads, Queen, Mildred Taylor, Maid of Honor. BASKETBALL CHAMPS Left to right: Roy Ho- gan, Bobby Stiles, Ed- win Hendrix, Dallas Hall, David Hendrix, Lyle Carringer. Second row: Manager Scott Laney, Carlos Hall, Ed Lovingood, Randal Shields, Ray Amos, Coach C. K Olson. The boys opened the season with a victory and have been winning since. As the annual goes to press the team has an 8-1 conference record and are in first place in the Western conference. They are tied for first place in the Smoky Mountain conference. Outstanding senior players are the Hendrix twins, Carlos Hall, Randal Shields (Shorty), and Lyle Carringer (Little Pig). BASKETBALL 1 he girls basketball team ended a very dismal season indeed. As the annual goes to press they have won two and lost nine games. Although they were unsuccessful in winning games, they played fine basketball and should be greatly commended for their untiring efforts and their fine team spirit. GIRLS' ALL-STARS Left to r i gli t, first row: Kathern Amos, Frances Stiles, Elizabeth Frankum, Jo Ann Cornwell, Grace Reece. Second row: Mary Ellen Walker, Betty Pal- mer, Ann Kilpatrick,, Kay Burgess, Lucille Hall, Ar- lene Hall, C. K. Olson (Coach). ATHLETICS Edwin Hendrix Randal Shields Lyle Carringer WE POINT WITH PRIDE Three senior boys who have crowned themselves with glory in basketball this year are: Randal Sheilds, Lyle Carringer, and Edwin Hendrix. We applaud “Shorty” Shields for his good nature and the ease with which he could put a ball in the basket with one hand. “Little Pig” Carringer was a dynamo of energy as he flashed from one end of the court to the other. His long shots rated loud applause from the spectators. Edwin Hendrix always played with the good of the team at heart rather than for individual glory'. ATHLETICS MURPHY WON SPORTSMANSHIP AGAIN The Murphy boy’s basketball team won four trophies; one as third place winner of the Smoky Mountain Conference Tournament. However, their most coveted trophy was for sportsmanship—this they have won two years in succes- sion. Randal Shields was awarded a trophy as most valuable player. The Mur- phy team also won a trophy as Champions of the Western division of the con- ference. In the Consolation playoff, an inspired Murphy squad beat favored Franklin by a 62-56 score. Murphy, in an upset game, was dumped from first place contest when Bryson City beat them 36-34. Now at the end of our season we point with pride to our good looking boys’ basketball team who were the best sports in the Conference. Last Fall our club gave a chapel program to acquaint the students with their purposes and activities. Later four members and our sponsor attended the F. H. A. Rally at Clyde, North Carolina, but perhaps the climax was our wonderful Christmas party. OFFICERS Janice Haney.......................... President Loretta Voyles................... ACTIVITIES KANUHSHETA Since Cherokee County is steeped in Indian names, Kanuhsheta was selected as an appropriate and permanent name for Murphy’s annual. It is the Indian word for our native dogwood. The senior class of 1953 earn- estly hopes that each successive class will commenorate this title by plant- ing a dogwood tree on the campus. The purpose of any yearbook is to present, in word and picture, one year of educational history. It is to this end the staff of the 1953 Kanuhsheta has worked. The regular edition is a two-column, ten-page newspaper, published monthly. Work on the staff affords those who are interested in journalism an excellent opportuntiy to develop their talent. The Boomerang was rated very outstanding in the mimeographed papers on exhibit in Cullowhee last fall. Recently members of the staff received an invitation to join the “Quill and Scroll”, a national honor society for high school journalists. The club is justly proud of the work accomplished and the recognition won this year. MEMBERS Joanne Adams, Carolyn Alexander, Adir Aronson, Shirley Bates, H. C. Miss Pegues, Miss Travis, Mrs. Ray, and Mr. Shields, began the task of our first registration for high school. It was a day that most of us had anticipated an dlooked forward to for a long time. How we had envied those fortunate ones who entered Murphy High before us! At last that much coveted day had come. Excited, yet having a feeling of security and accomplishment, we graduates of the eighth grades from Murphy Elementary, Martin’s Creek, White Church, and Peachtree came together to begin our associations and many long, treasured friendships. Our first year in high school presented many new problems, challenges, and privileges to which we were unaccustomed. For the first time we were permitted to choose our courses of study. Although we should have preferred omitting some of the required subjects, we were still very thrilled over the idea of stating our preferences and electing just one special subject or activity. And the idea of having five whole minutes between each of our classes to move about, gossip, and exchange ideas with our friends! The electing of class officers was another opportunity. We assembled and elected the following: Helen Haney, president; Edwin Hendrix, vice-president; Rosalind Stalcup, secretary; Blondell Isenhour, treasurer. New enthusiasms, new interests, new activities so filled the year that before we fully realized what was happening, we had passed examinations and pridefully taken home report cards marked “Promoted to 10 grade.” But a year’s experience did not give us too much self-assurance; we faced the second with anxiety. There was much knowledge to be gained and many problems to be solved in spite of the fact that now we were familiar with most high school activities. Up to this time we had had the same curriculum: English, science, civics, and math; but now we were beginnig to specialize, some taking Latin, biology, and algebra; others, business arithmetic, general business, and typ- ing; still others, agriculture, or home economics. Everything became more interesting not only in our academic subjects but also in our extracurricular activities. Boys with ability made the first string in football, basketball, or baseball; vivacious, pretty girls and Edwin Hendrix (can you believe it?) became cheerleaders up front loyally yelling for our teams. The band and chorus were chiefly composed of talented members from our class. That spring for the first time we had our own Field Day. Previously only a few had partici- pated in the one at Western Carolina Teacher’s College. This Field Day in our own school gave the opportunity of taking part in friendly competition not to a selected few, but to every- one who wished to enter any field offered: in academic subjects, sports, exhibits, music, art, or home economics. So passed the second year. Our junior year found us still bubbling with enthusiasm but with more obligations. The crown- ing of the football queen was the responsibility of the junior class. This was one of the high- lights of the season. The game was held at night . The queen, Louise Hall, and the maid of honor, Ann Dockery, wore suits of black and gold, the school colors. Having become deeply rooted in the high school routine by the time we entered our third year, we began to have ideas. Probably one of the best was the school paper. With the help of Miss Travis and Mr. Barnett we organized and issued the first copy of the Boomerang. Our suc- cessful work stimulated the interest of others who joined us to form a journalism club and make our school paper something of which we are indeed proud. CLASS HISTORY For our first formal entertainment we met what seemed an insurmountable problem—What place in Murphy, what place in Cherokee County could accommodate so great a crowd? That didn’t baffle us. Against gray stone walls of the gymnasium Miss Travis and her committee placed pine trees to give the illusion of a forest and nearer the foreground they hung Indian blankets. To carry out the Western theme they surrounded a covered wagon with bales of hay. In front of this glowed a campfire. The help of Mrs. Ray and Mr. Bueck was invaluable in se- curing stage props. The art class made and hung cattle brands and painted desert scenes which they placed in the background to give additional atmosphere. For entertainment Mrs. Ray im- ported the Swingmaster Orchestra from Blueridge, Georgia, under the direction of Dr. Brooks. They furnished music during the banquet and later for dancing. Sophomores in cowboy and cowgirl costumes not only waited on the tables but sang ballads characteristic of the wide open plains. Miss Pegues planned the menu which was prepared by Mrs. Davis and the lunchroom staff. Unique table decorations, cacti made of cucumbers studded with multi-colored toothpicks, bristled amid blue, pink, purple, and brown rocks on each table. At the end of the year we were responsible for decorating the auditorium and the gymnasium for commencement. High ranking members were marshals: Helen Haney, Lois Taylor, Rosalind Stalcup, Alma Stiles, Gladys Gentry, and Kay Burgess. After what now seems such a short time we were enrolling in high school for our last year, a year packed with some work, plenty of activities, and lots of pleasure. The ever present need for money again demanded time and energy; so again we trudged familiar streets, house to house, soliciting subscriptions for magazines. In November the football boys nominated senior girls for queen and maid of honor. By popu- lar vote throughout the high school Barbara Rhoads was chosen queen and Mildred Taylor, maid of honor. Members of the Booster Club were ladies of the court escorted by the football boys. The queen was crowned by football Captain Fred Dalrymple. The last week in Novem- ber many of the senior players went to Bryson City to play in the Smoky Mountain Senior Bowl Game on Thanksgiving Day. The West won! There Mildred Taylor was acclaimed Lion’s Bowl Qneen. A big event in December was College Day held for the purpose of helping the seniors here and from neighboring schools decide what college or university they would enter. Representa- tives from schools and colleges in North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee came to discuss their respective schools and to answer our questions. This day proved very helpful and was a delight- ful experience. Now as we begin our last semester only two activities remain: getting out the annual and giving the senior play. Not so far off is Commencement Day. Sad it may be for some of us, but glorious for those whose only ambition is just to graduate from high school. Many of our girls have already married. They will be homemakers with diplomas. Many of our boys will enter the Armed Forces. Some of us will go directly into the business world or to college. Regardless of what we may do or where we may go, we shall look back on these good years together. AUTOGRAPHS % , I '
