On October 16, 1970, Munhall held its 4th annual Homecoming festivities at West Field. During the half-time of the Munhall vs. West Mifflin South game, the queen and her court were announced. From eighteen nominees representing the school's clubs and organizations, the student body chose Diane Lloyd of the German Club as the 1970 Homecoming Queen. Preceding the official crowning of the queen was a motorcade of the candidates during Pre-game. All day the girls worked to create magnificent float displays for the procession. The winning float belonged to the Art Honor Society and their candidate, Debbie Urasek. a. Eighteen lovely candidates await the exciting moment. b. Preceding Election Day, the candidates presented speeches and issues in two assemblies. These nominees were then questioned by a panel consisting of two faculty members and the president of student council. Frank questions from the audience concerned school issues and resulted in open discussion among the candidates. However, the major topic, especially in the Senior Class, was the need for leadership to unite the student body. a. George Hovanec, nominee for Senior Class Vice-president, presents his views. b. Sponsored by the Senior Class, the event's highlight was the crowning of the Coronation Court. Reigning as king and queen were Tom Douglass and Linda Moser. Those Were the Days was the over-all theme that was later brought out in a reminiscent skit about Munhall High. The Quick-lime Foundry, a local group, provided rock music and set a lively pace for the evening. The Coronation Ball was certainly a sparkling holiday event! 144 The Coronation Ball Court: Rege Martin, Mike Krak, David Armstrong, Larry Bissell, Ed Marks, Jim Olson, Tom Douglass-king, Linda Moser-queen, Pam Hellett, Linda Mohrbach, Debbie Urasek, Karen Maddigan, Jeanie Noble, not pictured-Bernie Krupa. The play is a story of the lives of ordinary people in the small town of Grover's Corners. The story centers around the character of Emily, who grows up with her childhood sweetheart, George, marries him, and dies as a young mother. After her death Emily returns to Grover's Corners to relive a day from the past, but she finds life too painful. Our Town was enacted with emotion by the entire cast and created a strong catharsis with the audience. 148 The Drama Club demonstrated their acting skills again in an English comedy, Blithe Spirit, by Noel Coward. In the play Charles Condomine, a novelist, and his wife Ruth invite a medium to their home. Complications arise after a seance during which the writer's first wife, Elvira, returns as a ghost. When Charles tries to convince Ruth that Elvira has come back from the dead, amusing incidents occur. Naturally, Ruth suspects that Charles is insane. Ending with a surprising conclusion, the lighthearted play is an entertaining twist on spiritualism. Blithe Spirit Enchants A udience Charles . . . Ruth ...... Elvira .... Mme Arcardi Edith ...... The theme It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World was a fitting one, for those who attended were captivated with a spirit of frenzy and excitement. Adding to the electric atmosphere of the evening was a musical group, The Mystical Future . The highlight of the affair was the presentation of a two-piece luggage set by the Senior Class to their sponsor, John Bendall. Members of the graduating class received keychain flashlights from the PTO. The Coming Of A Sunset The 1971 Senior prom, titled The Coming of a Sunset, was spring's biggest event at Munhall. Planned for many months ahead of time, the formal affair was held at the Hilton Hotel on April 30. Couples danced to the lively music of the El Pooks until 12 A M. At that time the festivities moved to the Gateway Party Liner for the after-prom. As the boat cruised down the river. The Mutual Trust provided the musical entertainment. Following the group's show was a hypnotist, Eleanor Edwards. Eager volunteers who were under hypnotic spells brought a delightful close to the prom. 160 161 240 Graduates Accept Last Munhall Diplomas Graduation finally arrived on June 1 for the Class of 1971. Commencement exercises began with Andrea Sloan's invocation and a welcome address by Mike Krak. This year the theme was No Man Is An Island, and John Stulga, Andrea Masley, and Nancy Evans spoke on this topic. A special feature of the ceremonies was Amy Hogg's solo, Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Mr, Kondas proudly announced that Lester Torma was the 10,635th graduate of Mun-hall. The graduates sang the Alma Mater and ended with cheers of “Gimme an 'M'! After the benediction by George Hovanec was given, the Class of 1971 rose to accept their responsibilities and to look ahead to their many goals. In the Foreword'' the Editors wrote, Nearly every institution of learning has its yearly happenings and important events pictured and recorded in some annual publication. For this purpose we have edited the Munhisko.'1 Through it we hope to convey to you, dear reader, some intimation of the happenings in the brightest period of our lives. Our sincerest desire is that the Munhisko” may be continued in the future by the Senior Classes. The Class of '16 hereby contributes the last of its many offerings to High School life. May this effort succeed in its mission of awakening fond recollections in the mind of every reader. 170 1190-1915 This has been done consistently since 1916 and this year's stall has been a most worthy successor to this first Munhisko staff which was J. Donald Hutson, Editor; Irene Franklin, Priscilla Porter, Assistant Editors; Herbert T. Johnson, Sport Editor; Charles Menk, Art Editor; Andrew Mathieson, Subscription Manager; Harry Lessig, Advertising Manager. The Editor added, Though they write con-temptu gloriae, yet as Hieron observes, they will put their names to books And so the present staff will also do. Class of '17 17 members Class of '18 24 members Completion of addition to the west end of the High School consisting of eight rooms and a gymnasium. 1918 The 1918 MUNHISKO carried this about the addition: The large increase in the number of pupils in our school made it necessary to erect a new high school building. The ground was broken in the fall of 1916, but labor and traffic conditions prevented its completion until the winter of 1918. However, Patience brings reward'' and we now have one of the finest and best equipped buildings in the country. For many years we have wished for a gymnasium. Now we rejoice in one with up-to-date dressing rooms, which contain shower-baths and lockers enough to accommodate all the students. This building offers unsurpassed facilities for the teaching of chemistry and of physics. A common lecture room opens into laboratories carefully furnished for each study. A large combination study hall and reference room extends the length of the south side of the building. It affords a place for quiet study undisturbed by recitations. The extra room made possible the addition of a new course in the high school. Ten typewriters have been installed, the incessant click of which emphasizes their popularity. The teaching of typewriting is only an experiment, but if it proves successful there is no doubt that it will be made permanent. EDITORS NOTE: a pretty healthy experiment. The class of 1916 respectfully expresses its gratitude to the Board of Directors. Through long years of service, they have worked for us and made innumerable improvements for our benefit. The record of the directors shows how unceasingly they have worked to bring and keep Munhall to the front. After this first acknowledgement of the debt of all Munhall citizens of all ages to those selected from their midst to establish school policy, there is a long period, until 1936, in which no such recognition is available. This phrase exemplifies the task which falls upon the faculty and administration at Munhall. To them was given the task of educating and guiding us to a successful future. In the future we will look back and realize the value of their help. To them was given the task of molding the characters of the future citizens of America. Their success will be evident by the number of loyal citizens which they have trained for our democracy. Democracy is the process of living together in mutual agreement, therefore to these strengtheners of democracy, those guides to the path of success, the faculty of Munhall High School, we leave our words of gratitude and appreciation for their splendid achievement. The following is a list of the faculty members who to our knowledge have taught at Munhall Senior High School. We apologize if this listing is inaccurate, and we hope we haven't offended anyone, but our sources of information were extremely limited. 175 Members Of Our Faculty Clarence Adams 1970-1971 Edgar Aiello 1970-1971 E. Pre-season forecasters gave the Indians little hope for a successful season. However, in the first game the Indians startled these forecasters by winning over a strong Vandergrift eleven. They then knocked off Taylor-Allderdice, Scott, Braddock, Clairton, and Turtle Creek in that order. They upset the dope further by defeating a strong Penn squad. The following week after rolling up a big lead at half time, the Indians then coasted to an easy 27-7 victory over Duquesne in their annual rivalry. By this time, Munhall was recognized as one of the top teams in the W P.I.A.L. Then came the big test against Har-Brack. Two thousand Munhall fans stood in the mud and rain and watched their team lose a heartbreaker to Har-Brack. The boys of Nick Kliskey certainly deserve much praise in view of the fact that every team they faced was bigger than themselves. Besides winning awards from the local papers, they won the Steel Valley Conference Trophy. Rifle Team Number One in Nation In 1936 Munhall had 3 annual Scholastic champions —Joan Schuchman, Andrew Bevridge, and Mae Mar-key. Irene Ladick placed 1st for girls in 1938. In 1939 Martha Lloyd was the national champion with 111 bulls. Katherine Mitz held the same title in 1940 with 182 bulls. The 1942 champ was Jean Garland with 84 bulls, and 1943 crowned Catherine Crawford and her 999 score as national champ. During an undefeated season of 12-0 in 1952, Anna Marie Patrick dropped no points in the matches, an unprecedented performance in the WPIAL On April 21, 1953, Jules Filo, Representative of the 11th Legislative District introduced a resolution in the house to commend Munhall's Rifle Team. In 1956 Jean Cally and Kay Wilson dropped 1 pt. in 180 shots. The 1st year in the new range was 1960, when Nancy Fawcett received the NRA Medal for the Highest Senior Average, dropping 3 pts. in 17 matches. At the state finals in 1962 Dorothy Darsie fired a 200-20x, and Nancy Wilson shot a 200-19x. For Dorothy it was her 3rd straight year she fired a 200 at Penn State. Nancy shot her 4th consecutive 200. In 1963 Tom Wilkinson earned a NRA medal for the highest average. Munhall's flawless state record was marred twice by Interboro in 1964 and in 1969, both times by one point. Before the defeat in 1964, Munhall had won 75 consecutive matches in State and WPIAL play. Joan Cuddleback helped as assistant coach in 1953, Walter Weaver in 1943-44 In 1968 Joseph Bache took over as head coach. Munhall won the Allegheny Interscholastic Rifle Champion Matches every year from 1935-1942 except 1939 and 1940, when they came in second. 182 Munhall won the WPIAL title every year since 1942 except 1945, 1947, 1954, 1957, 1958, 1968, and 1970. Of these 22 WPIAL crowns, Munhall has had the state laurels 19 times. With the inauguration of Rifle in the spring of 1934, Munhall High School's Riflers became a legend. No other school has ever equaled the accomplishments of the Munhall shooters. Shooting was done at the Homestead Rod and Gun Club and the Outdoor Range. Students bought their own ammunition and met other expenses by selling doughnuts and cookies. When fall came the 1st range was formed in the Woodlawn Shop. A backstop was built by men of the faculty. On February 12, 1935, Munhall joined the National Rifle Association and won 24 medals that year. Munhall was H 1 in the Allegheny Interscholastic Championship. They also posted two wins over the Homestead Rod and Gun Club and the MHS faculty. Against other high schools MHS was 5-2-2. In 1935 four members of the team placed in the top 10 of the country, and the team itself placed 2nd in the NRA Postal Match Championship. In the first series of NRA Junior Biweekly Team Matches Munhall won division A trophys placing them No. 1 in the nation in 1936-37. There were 112 teams entered, and boys outnumbered girls 50 to 1. The success of the rifle team was due to the trio of coaches who worked hard- Margaret Markey, Ted Charlton, and Solon Wilson. Some fantastic sharpshooters of an early rifle team were Marjorie Stille, Relda Curran, Margaret Waterman, Mae Markey, Joan Schuchman, and Dorothy Braddock Jane Moon won the District Scholastic Title. Munhall's Rifle achievements are shown in its seasonal performances. By 1955 it had earned 11 state titles, 17 national titles, two 2nd honors, and one 3rd honor. The 1966 State Championship was Munhall's 19th PIAA crown. An all-girl's team was organized during the 1948-49 season which competed nationally under the same auspices as the mixed team. For at least 15 years from that time the girl's team remained in first place as national champs. 1935 Riile Team Volleyball and Soccer T. M. Rutter was the soccer coach in the 1929-30 season when the boys acquired a 2-3-3 record. In 1923-24 the record was 1-1-3 with the one victory a score of 1 -0 over Wilkinsburg. The volleyball team of 1937-38 under Coach Wie-land boasted a 12-3 record. It was in 1938 that a WPIAL Volley Ball League was first formed. Mun-hall won Section II, defeating teams with much more experience. At the annual volleyball tournament at Pitt Stadium, Corapolis defeated MHS in the semifinal round. Track Munhall's track teams existed during the 20's and 30's. As late as 1938 Munhall had a cross-country team. Here are a few early records: Participating in a triangular meet held on May 19, 1923, were Munhall, Homestead, and North Brad-dock. Munhall came out first with 59 points. Homestead had 47, and N. Braddock had 9. Munhall and Homestead were track rivals, scheduling dual meets. At a meet on May 20, 1924, Munhall again beat Homestead 57-38. Melvin Rutter took 1st in two events, and Virgil Thompson captured two 1st place honors. C. Miller and J. Mathieson also helped MHS's team, taking 1st and 2nd places in both discus and shot on April 26, 1923. 1937 Soccer Team 183 Baseball Formed in the 40 s, baseball soon became a regular spring sport. Nick Kliskey was the coach that led Munhall to its first section title in 1949. Ten years later the 1959 team defeated Duquesne in a section playoff to complete a 7-3 season and to capture the Section Title. Munhall participated in four victorious WPIAL Playoffs before losing to Mt. Lebanon by a score of 4-2. Coach Kliskey and his assistant Robert Olsavicky have had many winning seasons. 1935 Girl's Swimming Team 1961 Wrestling Team Wrestling A major step was taken to expand the sports program with the introduction of Wrestling under Coach Earl Olter in 1947. That first year we were 3-8. By 1950 we had won almost all of our matches. Under the coaching of Steve DeAugustino, wrestling greatly improved. In 1963 Tom Capp finished an undefeated season. He was in the finals of the Southwestern regional PIAA tournament in the 127 lb. class. Denny Nodd, in the 95 lb. class, was also undefeated. In 1956 Paul Eckley won the WPIAL 165 lb. class wrestling title for the 2nd straight year. Junior Bill Barron was undefeated until the WPIAL section finals in 1966. A 1969 team coached by Robert Berberich featured two class champs. Paul Matthews won the 120 lb. weight class in the WPIAL, Section 1. Joe Turovac was the champion in 138 lb. class and also a Southern District Finalist. Swimming The boy's swimming team of 1928-29 held a 3-2 record. In the 1929-30 season both boys' and girls' teams were victorious. Miss Markey's girls' team was 4-0, and the boys, coached by Mr. Ramsey were 3-1. In 1930 Mae Cutnell won swimming honors at the Senior National Meet and held 53 medals. Also in 1930 Russell Linberg held 24 medals in swimming and was Senior AMA record holder for 500 yds. indoor and 440 yds. outdoor. As a junior at MHS A1 Lebedda brought swimming honors to Munhall. On October 23, 1931, he competed in a meet sponsored by the Scranton Swimming Association. Swimming against more than 100 boys, Lebedda was Munhall's lone entry. He tallied 6 Vi pts. and captured 1st in the 220-yd. free style and 2nd in the 100-yd. dash. In Pitt's 18th Annual Interscholastic swim meet, A1 Lebedda broke the previous record set by Lindberg in 1930 for the 220-yd. free style. He clocked 2:27 1-5 for first honors and also won the 100-yd. free style. The other Munhall qualifier, Bernard LeLake won the 3rd heat of the 220-yd. race with 2:35 1-5. In 1960 Munhall entered WPIAL competition for the 1st time under Coach Furrer, and had a 4-3 record. The swimmers of 1963 competed in District 7 of the WPIAL and placed 21st in the State Champ finals. In state competition Bruce Philips got a 3rd place tie in the backstroke, and Jim Gibson placed 7th in 100-yd. free style. By 1964 Munhall was 13th in the state. In 1969 Vince Nigrelli, one of the best swimmers Munhall has ever coached, captured honors in the WPIAL Section Meet. The following year Doug Hawkins placed 8th and 9th in different events of the WPIAL. 184 ALMA MATER Mid the hills of Pennsylvania, A t the gateway of the West, Stands our dear old Munhall High School Loved by all of us the best. H S. Those who advertise in it are giving their support toward advancing those interests. We, therefore, ask the subscribers to patronize those who have so kindly patronized us. These are our sentiments, also, and we ask the same support in 1971 that was requested in 1916. Although the production of the 1971 Munhisko was a difficult task, those who shared the responsibility also shared the satisfaction of a job well done. Therefore, I would like to recognize the following persons who have made this Annual possible: Mr. Leslie Brand Activities section editor Senior section editor Special events section editor . . . Faculty section editor Sports section editor Robin Platt Head Typist Ruth Kudrik Photographer Dave Bastacky In expressing my appreciation I cannot exclude Lynne Kaselonis, Karen O'Leary, Cindy Wilson, and Rose Marie Serechin from the list of people who were always willing to help wherever they were needed. My thanks also go out to Diane Turner, Alexis Papp, and Anita Monyok for their time and assistance. I would especially like to thank Hill's Studio for their cooperation and efficiency. Lastly, I give my special thanks to Mr. Brand for his unlimited patience and cooperation. Denise Balogh Editor Our 1971 Dirge Well, now that you have read this book The write-ups never would come in, And come toward the end, The pictures were behind, Perhaps you will appreciate We thought we didn't have the dough The time we've had to spend. We nearly lost our minds. And all the work we've had to do But struggled through until at last. To plan and print this book for you. We hope our worries all are past. We worked till ten o'clock at night And now although our meter's changed, Without a bite to eat, It's hoped that you won't mind. Except a few thin pretzel sticks— For there's a little limerick, Which didn't taste like meat. We'd like to leave behind. And when we'd leave to get a bite, We're sure that it will give to you We'd find a page that wasn't right. A picture that we know is true. But eating wasn't all our care, The printer gets the money, There were a thousand more. The engraver gets the fame, We worried till we had gray hair, The class gets all the credit, At times we even swore. We wondered if it'd ever come, The time when all our work was done. While the staff takes all the blame. 196 in WALSWORTH Marceliat. Mo . I S A cw c
