Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1968 volume:

A Look Forward ...the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther... Every day is yesterday's tomorrow— yesterday's future. As we procede toward our envisioned endeavors let us live each day fully. In doing this we shall never regret a single precious moment, but rather ultimately realize these significant words of F. Scott Fitzgerald. 8 Contents Facu11 y 1() Students 2 6 Activities 6H Sports 96 Special Events 116 Patrons 139 9 FACULTY Board of Education Seated: Dr. Patrick O'Hare, President, Mrs. Margaret G. Kuzma, Mr. Joseph H. Havrilla, Vice President. Miss Marie Vondera, Treasurer, John J. Masick, Solicitor Standing: Mr. James P. Rock Jr., Mr. James L. Brown, Mr. William D. Evans, Mr. Robert J. Kosko. Dr. Lawrence A. Griffin, Superintendent of Schools. 12 ■ I Home is the sailor, home from the sea, And the hunter home from the hill. These lines from Robert Louis Stevenson's Requiem are most fitting for Dr. T. T. Charlton, who died suddenly May 14, 1967. Dr. Charlton served his country during World War II in the United States Navy, and for many years he continued in the Reserves after the war, acting as the Commanding Officer of a Reserve unit at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1963 he retired with the rank of Commander. Anyone who knew Dr. Ted Charlton was well aware of his love of shooting, for on school holidays and weekends he was either at a rifle range or in the woods during the hunting season. Having won many championships, he was named one of the ten best rifle marksmen by the National Rifle Association and was a member of the U. S. Rifle Team that toured Europe in 1963. For fifteen years he was a co-coach of Munhall's champion rifle team. A graduate of Shippensburg State College, he first taught in Patton, Pennsylvania. Coming to Munhall in 1929, he served first as a teacher and coach, later as Principal of Woodlawn Junior High School, and finally as Coordinator of Curriculum and as Assistant to the Superintendent. He received both his M. Ed. and D. Ed. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. After Dr. Charlton's thirty-eight-year career at Munhall, the many students who knew him and the teachers who worked with him all feel that something fine and shining left us last May. To The Members Of The Class of 1968 The theme chosen for your commencement has to do with building for the future on the achievements of the past. This forward thrust throughout history has been true at any point along the course of civilization. However, the theme has a special significance to you in relation to your own achievements in the years ahead. It is the wish, and the plan, of all who have had a part in your training - your parents, the community and indeed yourselves. The future, your future, can be the high point of all times in human achievement and of any moment in history. All have confidence in your ability to make it so. H. W. Beggs Principal Secretaries Miss Bernice Jones, Mrs. Eleanor Smithson High School Secretaries Mrs. Alice Murawski, Miss Mary Jean Hill, Miss Kathyrine Kerr. Seated: Miss Mary Hood. Superintendent’s Secretaries Miss Martha Molennor, Mrs. Clementina Evans School Board Secretaries M Counselors and Librarian Miss Margaret S. Howat School Librarian 15 English Mrs. Grace Copenhaver A.P. English, Senior English ( Mrs. Jane Taylor English Mrs. Marie R. Coyne English Miss Mildred M. Keltz English Miss I.ana Lee Levine English Mrs. Beatrice L. Worton English English is important in a 11 walks o f life, and Munhall's English department is set up accordingly. Everyone must take the subject all three years. The students, as a rule, are put into classes that best prepare them for their future vocations. This specialization is one of the reasons Munhall can be proud of its English department. 16 Social Studies Mr. Joseph J. Bache U. S. History Mr. John C. Bendall Problems of Democracy The history of our past and an insight into the future may be gained through studying the social sciences. Many excellent courses in this area are offered at Munhall; every student that passes through its doors takes several of them and, it is hoped, gains some knowledge of his fellow man. Mr. Edward Czajkoski Geography, World History Mr. J. Lewis Shannon Economics Business Math Mr. George P. Thomas World History Language Mrs. Cooper Latin Mr. Frank Meredith French k Mrs. Marilyn Niethamer German Physical Education Mr. Mark Schmidt Spanish Language does much more than increase the ability to communicate. At Munhall, Spanish, French, German, and Latin provide doorways to other cultures, and because of these languages both the past and the present lie within the realm of the high school student. 18 Science Mr. G. Edward Busch Mr. John R. Koziel Chemistry Biology, Physical Science Mr. Joseph S. Lacko Physics Mr. Robert A. Pawlowski Biology, Physical Science Our knowledge in the field of science is expanding more rapidly than in any other field. Many careers are opening up in this area everyday, and Munhall High School helps prepare the scientifically minded student for the future through its courses in physics, chemistry, biology, and physical science. 19 Mathematics Mrs. Josephine Brittain Mr. Daniel Bugel Algebra Algebra, Senior Math A mathematics course on the high school level may be taken for many reasons: it prepares the student for a career in engineering or the sciences; teaches the student how to think logically; or may be taken just for pleasure (?) At Munhall, many students take at least one mathematics in their three years of high school. 20 Business Mr. Leslie Brand Personal typing, Office Practice, Business Machines Business courses train students for jobs in a field in which the economy of our country depends. A student wanting to take advantage of the opport unities in this all-important field can get much of the necessary education at Munhall. Indeed, no matter what a student's future, a fundamental knowledge of business is helpful. Mrs. Elsie Curry Typing Mr. Paul Jones Bookkeeping, Business Math Miss Lorine white Shorthand, Transcription, English 3,4 21 Fine Arts Mr. Thomas Emmel Choir Mr. Thomas G. Mansell World Drama and The Creative Arts, Speech Miss Arlene Meyers Art The fine arts provide the needed supplement to man’s proverbial diet of bread. Students take fine arts courses for enjoyment as well as for preparation for a career, but above all else, a knowledge of the fine arts help to build a more well-rounded individual. Vocational Arts The vocational arts deal with a smaller portion of the student body than other departments but, none-the-less, have their place. Munhall offers several courses in this area. Mrs. Frances Campbell Home Economics Mr. Alex McAllister Mechanical Drawing Mr. John L. McCarthy Industrial Arts Mr. Peter J. Zecca Electric Shop, Industrial Arts 22 Physical Education Most courses at Munhall deal with building of the mind. The physical education courses contribute to the building of a sound body to house that mind. Both boys and girls benefit from their bi-weekly gym classes. Mr. Stephen V. Alternating periods of madness, frustration, and inspiration helped the staff put out an enjoyable newspaper. Essential to the publication of the paper was the guidance and encouragement of the sponsor, Mrs. Taylor. Through their work the staff learned the true meaning of responsibility and gained a valuable sense of satisfaction and acheive-ment. 74 Editors: Janice Zelnik, Karen Matuza, Sponsor- Mrs. Jane Taylor Typists: Jane Harrison, Nancy Wilson 75 National Honor Society W. While not directly responsible for the outcome of the game, those who work at the concession stand certainly do much to keep up the spirits of the spectators. After all, even those who love football find it difficult to cheer on an empty stomach. This year Mr. Pawlowski and the junior class have taken the responsibility of feeding those who attend Munhall's football games, and they have succeeded admirably. Milk Salesman Kneeling: J. Assemblies Munhall High School provides a variety of assembly programs for the general entertainment as well as education of the student body. Everyone will remember the many excursions to the Carnegie Library auditorium to view the Bell Telephone assembly, featuring Mr. Pennypacker, another on the value of the laser beam in space, and the interesting account of the life of Bobby Green, a singer. Fashion shows, awards assemblies, and pep assemblies, broke the monotony of a routine school week by giving the students something-worthwhile to anticipate. The Christmas Concert pre-s e n t e d by the Choir under the expert guidance of Mr. Emm el, greatly enhanced the spirit of this wonderful season.
