MUNHISKO 1964 Munhall High School Munhal , Pennsylvania Wj Foreword To set down in our memories the brief moments of our school life and to see ourselves as others see us, we have chosen a new approach in the Munhisko for 1964. Familiar scenes and memorable occasions will help us to realize and to understand the contributions that Munhall High School has made. Life passes through its portals in a continuous stream of ever-changing emotions. Always there is the noise and excitement in the halls, the stimulation of the classroom and the quiet serenity of a study hall. Ever present are the joys and sorrows that make our school community a unified body. The following pages reflect these various moods and activities, and present classmates and many exciting moments for future enjoyment. Activities 78 Sports 122 Special Events 143 Senior Directory 147 Advertising 153 3 Faculty Instructors, leaders, guides, directors, counselors, friends—these ore the many roles played by our faculty. Working together students and faculty complement each other. In the classroom the teacher directs us in our thinking, leads us in our search for the truth, exhorts us to evaluate the results, and inspires us to aim for the highest in achievement. But the faculty's work does not end here. Every teacher stands ready to give of his time, wisdom, and talent in directing us in our many co-and extra-curricular activities, as well as advising us in our choice of vocations and careers. Through their encouragement and dedication our teachers form the hub of our school community. Students A school is only os strong as its students and the bonds of co-operotion and loyalty which bind them together. What makes a student? is the question frequently asked. The answer is fourfold—attentiveness, interest, alertness, and enjoyment. The students of Munhall hove proved themselves worthy of this title by participating in and assuming responsibility for the many extra-curriculor activities as well as by their offices and activities to graduate to jobs and schools of higher learning, the underclassmen step into the positions of responsibility and Munhall High School continues to be the kind of school we are proud to call our alma mater. Activities Munhall High School's extra-curricular activities program was initiated for the purpose of enriching the student's school life and of giving to him an opportunity to develop qualities of leadership, cooperation, and service. This year the program was enlarged by a basketball tournament for the boys, a table tennis tournament open to all students, and by the organization of a Pep Club which supported all teams and cheered them on to victory. Our activities program offered something suitable to every student and provided each one an opportunity to serve his school. 6 Sports In the 1963-1964 term, Munhall students had the benefits of a full sports program. Whether they participated in a sport or cheered the team on from the sidelines, the athletic program included something for everyone. Munhall had teams in football, bosketboll, swimming, wrestling, rifle, and baseball. From among those sports, every Munhall student had a favorite. These teams were strengthened by some outstanding individuals. In basketball. Rich Meszar had another great year. The wrestling team was led by two seniors, Denny Nodd and Frank Bogus. Our rifle team again brought distinction to the Munhall School District by having one of the greatest teams in the country. Mr. Wilson's sharpshooters won the section quite easily due to the efforts of several seniors and juniors who rarely dropped a shot. Behind these athletes were many others who did their best to give Munhall a successful sports season. 8 THE MUNHALL SCHOOL BOARD SEATED: Dr. Patrick C. O'Hore, Mr. John J. Lordon, Mrs. Lawrence A. THEODORE CHARLTON COORDINATOR OF CURRICULUM 10 To the Class of 1964 Congratulations to you upon completing twelve years of your formal education and your graduation from high school. Each year graduation classes are reminded of a new emphasis which follows the previous year s developments; but, in many ways, the new situations carry real and different meanings for the class of that year. This year one is impressed with the greater need for post high school training and, in particular, special training for those not entering college. This year, more than any other year, you learn that each year fewer and fewer man hours of work are necessary to maintain, and increase at a rapid rate, our standard of living. This can only mean less employment in the future and the accompanying need for all to prepare for constructive use of leisure time. Best wishes to you ahead. for successful and happy years H. W. Miss Rush The unsung heroes of the stage were the junior and senior boys who were the unseen actors ot every production. No play, no assembly, no concert, no announcement mode from the auditorium was ever performed without the work of the stage guild. The scenery, lighting, sound effects, and all technical equipment for any production on the stage were the responsibility of this group of boys. The biggest project this year was performed by the three senior members when they covered a complete set of scenery for the Junior-Senior Play, a project which required well over one hundred man hours and was accomplished entirely beyond school time. This project netted the school a saving of four hundred dollars. 99 JUNIOR PLAY CAST Mrs. Bradley (Granny) Linda Hinkle Lois Ingals Trudy Wilson Julia Murdock Carolyn Mansfield Eunice Ingals Sarah Jean Erskine Bernard Ingals Robert Hirko Ronald Murdock John Hayden Rhoda Rosemary Conners Giles Whitaker David Thompson Bradley Ingals Edward Lelake Doty Fa ire Jackie Sabol Mary Clurman Pat Metz Noel Derby Dennis Bade Hugh Ingals Ronald Lacey Student Directors: Alice Capp, Kathy Jones Mary Ann Tomko, I don't wont onyone to drive me! 100 Hugh? Once again we met Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Ingals and their children, Hugh, Lois, and Bradley; and, by far the most important member of the family, Granny. During the progress of the play, Brad realized his ambition to become a director and have his own little theater; Granny became an actor; Lois finally accepted Giles' proposal of marriage; and Ronald Murdock asserted his rights as an individual and married the girl of his choice. JUNIOR-SENIOR PLAY — director, Miss Rush The Junior-Senior Play was Janie by Josephine Bentham and Herschel Williams. This three act comedy took place in the Colburn home, located in a midwestern town near an army comp. The fun began when Mrs. Lawrence, a flirtatious widow, arrived for a visit with her son Dick, stationed at the nearby camp. Dick, who had been trying to cut the maternal apron strings, found a real ally in the Colburn's bachelor friend, John Van Brunt; but not before he threatened to ruin Jane's high school romance and the entire household with his little party. Elsbeth, Janie's little sister, did her part to complicate the plot; and gay young people crowded the stage for most of the evening, providing many laughs and real entertainment. The gridders ran up a total of 95 points against some of the finest teams in the state, including the W.P.I.A.L. AA champions, West Mifflin North. Three seniors—John Hayden, Paul Horvath, and Frank Bogus—led the defensive team. However, injuries to key players added to the worries of Coach Zuger. All in all it was a year for breaking in a new system which was introduced by the head coach. This new brand of football included more passing and an offense much like that used in professional football. The Indians7 basketball squad finished with a record of three wins and nine losses in section play. Even though the record seemed lopsided it did not take into account the spirit of the boys on the court nor the spirit of the students in the stands. It was this spirit that kept the team going. This, when compared to last year's twenty-first place, showed just how much Munhall's mermen had improved. Perhaps one of the reasons Munhall seemed stronger was the presence of experienced swimmers. There were six seniors on the team. If this was a major factor, the 1964-1965 season should be even greater due to the experience gained by the junior and sophomore members of the team. Mr. John Matthews finished his first full season as coach of the swimming team. He took over last year after Mr. Philip Ortego was sidelined in the middle of the season. Wrestling Mr. De Augustino's wrestling team finished the season with a record of 2 wins and 12 losses. However, the team was picked up by outstanding individual wrestling. This year's team was led by co-captains Denny Nodd and Frank Bogus. These two boys had another great year and Munhall wrestling fans cheered them on their ways to near perfect seasons. Both Nodd and Bogus were Munhall's popular choices to go all the way in the section. Besides Nodd and Bogus, seven seniors were on the team. They included Denny O'Leary, Henry Cerra, Ken Puhatch, Jim Orosz, Ken Oleska, Paul Murray, and John Hayden. 138 Denny Nodd trys for o pin SENIORS: I. to r.: J. Orosz, P. O'Leary, J. Hayden, D. In all but three of the games, Munholl's opponents were kept to less than two points. This is due to some great pitching and fielding. The team had an advantage in having ten seniors on the team. The senjors were—Rich Meszar, Bill Goldberg, Ed Oross, Bill Bryan, Ken Oles-ka, Connie Garrity, Joe Filipowski, Ray Seech, Bill Trinnes, and Dave Thompson. Pitchers Mike Bartek and Joe Filipowski led the pitching staff and were aided by several others. Mr. Kliskey, who once again coached the baseball team, believed the 1964 season would be more successful than the 1963 season. Rich Meszar ROW I: C. O'Hare, W. Bryan, C. Perhac, P. Horvath, J. Many of us had known David since kindergarten days and had always thought of him as just one of the guys. Like most of us he had won no prizes through art, music, or athletic prowess and laid no claim to recognition or fame in any field of academic study or school activity. But his friendly smile, his courteous manner, and most of all, his courage and faith through sickness and pain and the almost certain realization of approaching death will never be forgotten by those of us who knew him best. 151 3Jn JHentortam 3|nhn 3fitzgerald IRntned Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country 152 PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS COMPANY 308 East Eighth Avenue HOMESTEAD PENNSYLVANIA 461-0686 MOXLEY DRUG STORE 200 East Eighth Avenue Homestead, Pennsylvania 461-2833 Compliments of J.
