OF MUNHALL-’63 MUNHISKO Nineteen Sixty Three Munhall High School Munhall, Pennsylvania foreword Memories - memories of classes, dances, football and basketball games, assemblies, all extracurricular activities, and most important, classmates - are recaptured in the ANNUAL. It has been the goal of the ANNUAL staff to present in an accurate and unusual book a record of the students and events which constituted the happy high school years. From formal pictures come memories of classmates, both as individuals and as members of various activities such as student council, Spanish club, or hall patrol. Informal shots recall special events such as the Senior Play, or the Coronation Ball, or just ordinary everyday happenings in the classes and the activities. It is the hope of the staff that in this ANNUAL they have presented a true picture of the school and its students - a picture which will enable graduates of Munhall High School to relive their high school years over and over again. introduction . . • page 4 faculty..........page 8 students........page 24 activities .... page 68 sports...........page 112 senior directory . . page 142 advertising . . page 147 3 faculty Teachers are the most important single factor in a school system. It is they who give life to the printed page, who direct students to seek truth and follow it, to challenge thought and subdue it, and to enter the unknown and conquer it. MunhalTs faculty does all this and more. Through our teachers we have been enriched academically and socially. They not only have guided our thinking but through their patience, understanding, and leadership in extracurricular activities, they also have directed us into positions of leadership and service in our school and community. They have aided many of us in deciding upon our careers. Our teachers have been our instructors, our counselors, our friends. 4 This year iMunhall adopted the six-three-diree plan making Woodlawn the junior high school and Munhall the senior high school. As members of one of the largest classes in the history of Munhall, the sophomores, not to be outdone by upperclassmen, attained high scholastic standing and participated in many of the activities. The juniors spent their days preparing to take the responsibilities of being the oldest in the school. The seniors found their last year to be one of excitement and hard work, and it was with a sense of sadness but many fond memories of their high school years that they left Munhall to their successors. 5 activities The extra-curricular program in Munhall High School was designed to enrich the school life of the students and to develop in them the qualities of leadership, cooperation, initiative, and service. Through membership and active participation in the various clubs and organizations, the individual's social status was enhanced, and he was better prepared, upon graduation, to take his place in adult society and to actively engage in the life of the community. sports Athletically inclined students at Munhall High found ample opportunity to perfect and display their skills in the school's varsity sports program. Seven varsity sports were offered during the 1962-1963 term. Far from an ordinary season, many events made the year memorable for senior athletes. Mr. Kliskey, twenty year head football coach, retired; the rifle team won the state and national tides; two swimmers, Bruce Phillips and Jim Gibson, swam in the Pennsylvania championship meets; wresder Tom Capp finished the regular season without a defeat and took second place in the Southwestern Regional PIAA tournament; the basketball squad defeated both of Munhall's rivals. Homestead and West Mifflin North, twice; the volleyball team journeyed into the semifinals for the WPlAI.title;the baseball team defeated section 14 champion McKeesport on its own field. Yes, the students at Munhall had every reason to be proud of the 1962-1963 sports season. 7 FACULTY 9 DR. THEODORE CHARLTON COORDINATOR OF CURRICULUM MR. STUDENT COUNCIL - sponsor, Mr. McCarthy As the governing body of the school, the Student Council promoted cooperation and good citizenship among the students and assumed responsibility for many of the school activities. Some of their duties included supervision of student elections, provision for a tree and hall decorations at Christmas time, and the sponsorship of after-game dances and the Coronation Ball. Council members were elected by the students on the basis of their scholarship, leadership, and willingness to serve the entire student body. 70 annual- student publication ANNUAL - sponsor, Mr. Shannon Your yearbook, a record of the people and events of the school year, was published through the cooperative efforts of the entire staff. In the frantic rush to meet deadlines, many after school and evening hours were spent keying and cropping pictures, writing and typing copy, headlines, and captions, and identifying the students in each picture. Every picture which was placed in the ANNUAL had to be cropped—proportioned to fit the picture in the dummy—and keyed. In addition to the work put into the actual publication of the ANNUAL, the staff was kept busy selling advertising and subscriptions. D. Bendall, co-editor; Mr. Shannon, advisor, D. Those with outstanding art ability were recognized and encouraged to continue art both in school and after graduation. Members of the society were often called upon throughout the year to do much of the art work for various activities. Members had many entries in the Scholastic Art Exhibit at Kaufmann's and attended the exhibit as a group to compare their work with that of outstanding students from other schools. Many also exhibited work in the High School's Annual Art Exhibit. Mr. Brugh, sponsor; L Morvay, vice president; L Joyce, president; I). Knight, secretary-treasurer. ROW 1: A. Trifanoff, B. To be a candidate, the student not only must be high in scholastic standing, but also must participate in at least two extracurricular activities. Members are elected by the teachers on the basis of character, scholarship, leadership, service, and must be well-rounded and mature individuals. Activities of the National Honor Society this year included the sale of Munhall decals and attendance at a Pittsburgh Pirate baseball game. Membership in the Society should be the goal of all students. ROW 1: D. Majcrnik. vice president; C. Bade, secretary; T. Wilkinson, president. ROW 2: D. W ydo, J. W Intersieen, Miss Ho at sponsor, D. Selected irom among the commercial students taking either the office practice or the business machines courses, these girls spent many extra hours typing and marking tests, recording grades, and doing other secretarial work for the teachers. While many served as secretaries for the teachers, others alternated as receptionists for the high school office and often relieved the office of some clerical work. These Senior Secretaries received a variety of practical experiences that, in addition to their formal training in the classroom, will be useful in their careers. The Ingals had always sacrificed much to give their children the best, and the children took it for granted that they could have anything. However, when it was believed that Bernard had lost his job, the three children got together to help their father find another job. Each was willing to make a personal sacrifice to save money. Despite many problems, the swimming team continued to compete in the WPIAL District Seven and even managed to place twenty-first in the state championship finals. Three senior swimmers, Bruce Phillips, Jim Gibson, and Russ Lindberg formed the nucleus of the team. Two of them, Phillips and Gibson, earned the chance to compete for the state championship, but neither took a first place in his special event. Phillips came closest with a third place tie in the backstroke whileGibsontookseventh place in the hundred yard freestyle. A new swimming coach, Mr. Phillip Onego, began the season with the Indian swimmers, but was sidelined at midseason. Later, the position was taken over by Mr. John Matthews, who finished the season. Coach Kliskey Munhall's final sport of the season, baseball, completed the 1962 season with a record of six wins and three losses. Although seven seniors—Jay Gillard, John Koval, Tom Bugel, Rich Katanik, Glenn Matthews, Lou Sabo, and Jim Williams—graduated, the 1963 season promised to be just as successful. Much depended on the performance of the Indians' three pitchers in 1963. Sophomore Mike Bartek was expected to lead Munhall, with help from senior Tom Behen and junior Joe Fllipowski. Munhall began the season with a 5-2 exhibition win over Swissvale before moving into WPIAL Section 14 competition. Seniors on the squad included catcher Gary Schweinberg, pitcher Tom Behun, third baseman Bob Bugel, shortstop Rich Koroly, and outfielders Jed Connelly, Ray Aaracco, Tom Lucas, Carroll McCarthy, and Charlie O'Hare. 130 Rich Koroly Shortstop Jed Connelly Outfielder seniors Ray Saracco Outfielder Robert Szczepankowski OTHER SENIORS TOM BEHUN Pitcher BOB BUGEL Third Baseman TOM LUCAS Outfielder carroll McCarthy Outfielder CHARLES O'HARE Outfielder GARY SCHWEINBERG Catcher 131 volleyball Indian volleyballers had one of the shortest seasons on record—one day. Munhall's volleyball rival and last year's state champion, Homestead, defeated Munhall in the semi-finals before winning the first place trophy. Munhall practiced for only nine days before entering the tournament and played no exhibition matches. Mr. Kliskey stands with his assistant of twenty years, Hubert Shiring, right, and Robert Markley, his other assistant and the former coach. 136 twenty years as coach Nicholas H. Kliskey v$ Football at Munhall High School lost its greatest supporter and coach when Nicholas H. Kliskey retired at the end of the 1962 season. Mr. Kliskey earned a lifetime coaching record of 101 wins, 63 losses and 11 ties, amounting to seventeen successful seasons out of twenty at Munhall High School. During this time he made Munhall a football power that was respected wherever it went in the WPlAL circuit, bringing Munhall into the strong Western Conference in 1956, and leading the team to a co-championship in 1959. Four Steel Valley Conference trophies now appear in the Munhall awards case as a result of Mr. Kliskey's efforts. In addition to his enviable record, Mr. Kliskey achieved recognition by aiding district athletes in getting into college and in entering the world of sports. Many of his understudies went on to achieve national fame; many are still bringing recognition to Munhall through outstanding performance in colleges today. To Nicholas H. Kliskey, our teacher and friend, goes a deep vote of thanks for twenty years of outstanding service as head coach at Munhall High School. 137 special events Horsing around during Student Council elections Band seniors honored in ceremony Weightless Wes (Mr. Telosky) at K.Q.V. game The Vanguard performers and Taming of the Shrew senior directory MARY ELLEN ADAMS Mair ELIZABETH ANN BOBICK Deity Ann General Clerical Beautician Business Senior Secretaries Munhisko, Hall Patrol, Senior Secretaries, FTA. Mr. Robertson may not have been known by all the students, but his work and efforts were felt by all. In the school, at the games on West Field, at the dances, at Commencement, the work of Mr. Robertson and his fellow custodians was always in evidence. Few were the times, however, when anyone paused to say thank you, for he was just the man behind the scenes. To his wife, son, and sister he was a loving husband, father, and brother; to everyone he met, a friend. He made his friends by being one. And on his friendship men relied; In every deed that need be done He made the Golden Rule his guide. His friendly presence brought a cheer That made the day seem wonderous fair; His daily living so sincere Made others love him everywhere; He was a friend. No task too great for him to do And in the doing was a smile That aided as he carried through The deeds that were so well worthwhile. The brightness of his day is gone. We see the setting of the sun; If only we could carry on And live a life like he has done! He was a friend. 168 ■c. OF MUNHALL-63 . ' ,V V • V-A % , WV W '-' - ► - -X. - • -«..
