Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1962 volume:

r ewo r d The staff of the yearbook for 1962 set as its goal the publication of an annual that would be not only a record book but also a memory book. With this end in view we added many informal pictures in an attempt to give a more accurate account of the many curricular and extra curricular activities of our school. The administration, the faculty, the custodians, the cafeteria staff, the students— all played their respective roles, in order to make the year 1961-62 a truly memorable one, and they are all a part of this book. Proudly we present to you our annual, THE MUNHISKO of 1962. It is our sincere hope that in the years to come this book will help you to recall the many happy days spent in Munhall High School. c o n t e n t s THE MUNHALL SCHOOL BOARD LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. William D. BEGGS PRINCIPAL TO THE CLASS OF 1962 To the members of the class I wish to extend to you the best wishes of the school and community for the years ahead. Your graduation from high school is indeed a mark of real personal achievement. Your graduation day arrived after much work, serious planning and participation in school activities. It is hoped that high school graduation had meaning to you personally beyond all that you anticipated. High school training helped you to prepare for the next step. One outcome is your ability to meet and solve problems day by day. This ability will become more important to you as you take your place in a society in which change is the most characteristic quality. You will meet not only change but acceleration of change as well. For this you must be prepared. It is hoped that you remember your high school days for their contribution to your preparedness for the future. H. W. BEGGS Principal appointed officials policy DR. LAWRENCE A. Since both classes were under the sponsorship of Mr. John Bendall, the opportunities which presented themselves were numerous. With the students from Woodlawn coming down to the high school this year, there were new talents and abilities brought to the use of the class. The members of the class of '63 should be proud of their achievements. May you all have a very happy senior year. 62 G. Lyle, vice-president; J. Leonardo, secretary-treasurer; T. Patrick, president. The reason, of course, was the school's new policy making Wood-lawn Junior High School only. The administration felt that this change would give the members of the class of '64 an extra year in which to become better acquainted with each other, thus resulting in a more productive junior and senior year. With the new change in school policy making Munhall a senior high school and Woodlawn a junior high, it will be necessary for the following freshman classes to spend their days at Woodlawn Junior High School. Good luck to the members of the class of '65 which will long be remembered as the last freshman class of Munhall High School. R. Havrilla, president; S. Eberwein, secretary-treasurer; J. Diana Wilson, Peggy's younger sister, and Carol Stellar, her best friend, anticipate the party and Prom for the laughs they will bring. Then a special news bulletin, a hoodlum, Dino Dirkin, and gas station hold-ups begin to complicate matters. Douglas, told the story of a noted physician. Dr. Hudson, who was devoted to serving humanity because of an unusual vitalizing belief. Early in the play he drowned when he might have been saved by the means that was being used to save Bobby Merrick, a wealthy playboy. When Bobby learned the truth concerning the doctor's death, he resolved to take the surgeon's place, prove that Dr. Hudson's Journal contained the true way of life, and overcome the hostility of the doctor's widow. How Bobby Merrick accomplished all this made for a play that we shall never forget. Enchanted Evening, as the prom was called, began at 9 P. M. with dancing followed by supper at midnight. Then came six hours of entertainment consisting of music by the Con-dores and K.Q.V. disc jockey, Rod Roddy, demonstrations of the power of hypnosis by Dr. William Pryce Jenkins, and several other interesting acts. With a five-three record, earned playing a tough set of opponents, the Indian's record should be looked on with much respect. The team was rated as a powerful opponent by the conference and district teams. The idea that Munhall had a strong team was verified when four boys were selected as All Western Conference of Class AA standouts. Defensive star Tom Bugel was selected for the position of quarterback on the first team of both the All Western Conference and the Class double A squad. Though Jay Gillard played less than half of the season due to a broken collarbone incurred early in the second half of the Trinity game, he was selected for the second team in the Western Conference as an end. Jay was recognized as a stellar end in the field of pass-snatching, although he was an expert conversion kicker. He also received an honorable mention in the Class AA in the position of end. Bob Stupor, Munhall's hard tackling end, earned an honorable mention on both teams. Don DeBlasio was recognized with an honorable mention in the Class AA competition for his skill both as an offensive and a defensive center. Besides the award winners, John Koval played as fullback, Tim Pitchford as tackle, and Bill Ondo as a fast moving halfback. Munhall has always been known for its ability to field good football teams, and this past season was no exception. The names mentioned above were just a few of the boys who helped to make the 1961 season a successful season for head coach Nick Kliskey and Munhall High School. 121 FIRST ROW: Clair Hvozdovich, Dennis O'Leary, Paul Horvath, Richard Koroly, Jim Caldwell, Ronald Fonzi, David Thompson, Raymond Seech, Nick Kouchak, Charles Nelson. The Indians amassed 107 points while holding their opponents to 24 points in the first five games. After the close win over Norwin, the Indians were unable to score a single point. Baldwin, Munhall's next opponent after the Norwin game, was the same team that tied the Indians during the 1960 season and seemed to jinx the team. The season was even more successful because Munhall defeated Homestead twice, 43-41 and 65-53, bringing Coach Thomas' winning streak over Homestead to 4-0. Ralph Beasock, guard, was nominated to the second team of the Section Six All Star Team for his high scoring from the backcourt. Ralph was the third highest scorer in the section. This team, though it receives little recognition, has journeyed to the finals or semi-finals every season in the last eight years. This season, volleyball coach, Pross Thomas, tried to find some good spikers in Rich Banchansky, Harvey Inglis, John Duch, Bob Cherep, and Bob O'Shea, who were the tallest boys on the team. The WPIAL volleyeball champions were decided at an all day tournament at Penn Hills early in April. COACH G. PROSSER THOMAS 140 FIRST ROW: N. Stabile, J. Williams, H. Dean, D. Smecker, R. Saracco, G. Koval. baseball COACH NICHOLAS KLISKEY The baseball team, little known because most of the action comes late in the school year and early in the summer, is one that often brings honors to Munhall. Last year our team earned a record of six victories and two losses in its section but was eliminated in the first game of the playoffs by Scott High School, 1-0. This year two returning seniors who saw much action last year formed the nucleus of the team. Tom Bugel played at shortstop and John Koval at second base. 'in . t:v, w. ■ LNu t tmiL Intramural Sports PAUL R. JONES, SPONSOR •• INTRAMURAL SPORTS Intramural sports were started during 1961-62 at Munhall in order to give a greater number of pupils the opportunity to participate in athletics. The home rooms each formed teams and competed on their own grade levels. The boys' sports consisted of touch football and bosketball, and the girls competed in archery and basketball. Trophies were awarded to the winning home rooms. As the need arises in the future, more sports will be added so that a greater number of pupils may participate in a program that will help them become more physically fit. One outcome of this year's program was the organization of a girls' basketball team to compete with teams of other schools. 142 MRS. BARBARA F.
