tABle of contents intROduction page 4 faculty page 12 students page 40 activities page 86 advectisements page 152 © In the popular concept of today, a mobile is a form of modern art of many and varied materials emanating from a central focal point. Any mobile of merit must be well-balanced and free to revolve around the center. Wisely our Annual Staff has chosen the mobile as its theme. Wisely ? Yes, because we have that focal point — an able administration — school board, superintendent, principals, and faculty. Emanating from this vibrant center are students of all abilities, capacities, desires, and ambitions. Here the athlete, there a literary enthusiast; here a linguist, there the scientist of tomorrow; a potential politician or perhaps the artisan, engineer, or businessman — all of these can trace themselves to the very core of the mobile. Yet the main artery in the heart of the mobile is the faculty from whence comes guidance, supervision, and instruction. In an atmosphere of friendship they sponsor the many clubs, coach the athletic teams, chaperon the dances, direct class plays, inspire and instruct each student in his course of study, and set an example of citizenship. That is our mobile. Like any work of art, let us give it a name. This is Our School World — serving a planned purpose. Let our world unfold to you its pages — pages which in future years will recall nostalgic memories. Oedication © We, the class of 1961, wish to thank Mr. Bendall, our class sponsor, for his helpful guidance throughout the past year. Through his patience and understanding, he has inspired our class to strive for the highest goals possible in this, our senior year. Never too busy to offer advice or lend a helping hand in any class project, he has earned the respect and gratitude of all the students at Munhall. Because of this, we consider him a friend as well as a member of the faculty. So, to Mr. Bendall who has given so much time and thought to us, we dedicate our yearbook of 1961. to stmve, to seek, 13 SITTING: Dr. Patrick C. O'Hare, Mrs. Margaret Kuzma, Mr. T. CHARLTON Coordinator of Curriculum TO THE CLASS OF 1961 As you leave the portals of Munhall High School on graduation day you will carry with you the everlasting gratitude of those students who will follow in your footsteps. Your contributions to the heritage and traditions of your Alma Mater are forever engraved upon her tablets of history. She is indebted to you for the standards you have established, for the mark you have made. This you will do, we are sure, for you are a product of an academic program of studies, intelligently interpreted and presented by a staff of dedicated teachers. Be proud of your Alma Mater. Praise her fortunes, condone her omissions. With your best wishes she will endure forever. District Superintendent Lawrence A. Griffin DR. LAWRENCE A. MARGARET SEILER Future Teachers of America To prepare us for life in the nuclear age, our counselors not only aid us with academic problems, but also help us choose a course of study to suit our future needs. By showing an interest in us as individuals, our counselors have proved themselves to be our friends as well as our advisors. ■lLLLIAL And LiBRARianS To mend and arrange books or to help us find reference material our librarians are always available. Their aim is to educate us in order that we may find our own way about the library by proper use of the card catalogue, the Readers' Guide, and the pamphlet file. Moreover, our librarians work tirelessly to keep our library and our reading up-to-date in this modern world. MISS MARGARET HOW AT Library Club 17 MR. CHARLES BUCK MRS. GRACE COPENHAVER This year the English Department offered a course for twenty-one seniors in college English under the Advanced Placement program. Not only in this class but in all the English classes, our teachers keep us well versed in our mother tongue — the mechanics of its grammar and an analysis and appreciation of its best literature. Since success in other fields depends so greatly on the understanding of the English language, our teachers' work is particularly demanding; but they meet this challenge and continually raise the scholastic standing of Munhall. enqLish MRS. The course takes in a thorough study of each country and its people. As we take an imaginary journey from the skyscrapers of New York to the huts of the Congo, and from the northern lights to the penguins of the Antarctic, we see the people — their customs and their livelihoods. Our instructors truly help us understand the geography of our world. MR. EDWARD CZAJKOSKI MR. JACK CROSSAN, JR. MR. JACK CITRON Geography Club MRS. WANDA SWANSON 21 MR. This has increased the need for knowledge of foreign languages. Our language teachers prepared us to meet this need by presenting a foundation of Latin, Spanish and German. Under our teachers' guidance we not only acquire a reading and speaking knowledge of the language, but also an understanding of other people's customs and culture. MR. FRANK MEREDITH French Club MR. Proposals for the general welfare of the school are weighed and measured, amended, passed or rejected in a democratic give and take. The council's success this year can best be determined by the many projects it sponsored. Ushers for Open House, decorating the halls for Christmas and awarding a prize for the best decorated home-room door, purchasing an aluminum tree, sponsoring the Coronation Ball, and holding after game dances were just a few of its many activities. Our thanks go to Mr. McCarthy, sponsor; Bill King, president; Bob Toth, vice president; Georgeiana Garrity, secretary; and Phyllis Baldwin, treasurer; those who formed the spearhead of this most active student organization. 89 voice of the students WOODLAWN STUDENT COUNCIL — sponsor, Mr. Cross To further the general welfare of the school, to encourage good citizenship, and to stimulate a spirit of co-operation among the students are the aims of the Woodlawn Student Council. This year the Council sponsored several dances, elected a hall patrol squad, and acquainted the sixth grade pupils with Woodlawn by taking them on a tour of the school. The officers of the Woodlawn Student Council are Tom Wilkinson, president; Cheryl Aber, vice president; and Betty Thomas, secretary-treasurer. KNEELING: J. Ednie, C. Ayre, V. Barnosky, G. Matthews. We, the Staff, hope that in this yearbook we have a true reflection; a reflection that will enable our graduates to revive the thoughts of many happy, exciting, and some more serious events and to relive these days in their memories as the years sweep down upon them. Miss Howat One of the highest honors bestowed upon members of the Junior and Senior Classes is the opportunity of being elected to membership in the National Honor Society. Election to this group gives recognition to the student who is a well-rounded citizen of our school community. Not only must the member be high in his scholastic standing, but also he must participate in at least two school activities. Membership in this organization is based upon these four cardinal principles: CHARACTER, SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP, and SERVICE, and candidates are voted upon by faculty members teaching in these two grades. National Honor Society membership is a worthy goal for all students. n. a. h. s. pARticipAteP in ari exhiBit Left to right: P. Baldwin, vice-president; E. Gasowski, president; M. Only one string was attached to the deed when the Gages bought their Connecticut country home. When the Rockwoods, the original owners, had sold the property to a power company they had reserved the right to remain in the house as long as they lived. But they had been gone for more than six years and were believed dead. The Gages were scarcely settled in their new home, however, when the Rockwoods returned and demanded their rights. The clash between the new-fangled ideas of the Gages and the old-fashioned habits of the Rockwoods made for an evening of delightful entertainment. Held April 29th at the Gateway Plaza, our prom was truly an event to remember — a night filled with dining, dancing and top entertainment. Remember too, the feeling as we returned home from the early breakfast, each of us knowing that the memories of Dusk to Dawn would remain forever. Choir This past year was a busy one for our choirs. Under the direction of Mr. Thomas Emmel the High School Mixed Choir, the Glee Club, and the Wood-lawn Choir presented many entertaining assemblies and evening programs. In December, a special Holiday show and cantata, sung by the Mixed Choir and Glee Club, highlighted our final assembly before the Christmas vacation. The Woodlawn Choir presented a similar program. To close the school year, the combined choirs of Mun-hall and Woodlawn gave their annual Spring Concert, featuring great song hits of the twentieth century composers. These programs, as well as the many other activities of our choirs, brought enjoyment through music to the students of Munhall. MIXED CHOIRS choiRs gave annuaL conceRts. 124 ROW 1: C. Myers, D. SIOUX Head Sweet Sioux GRETCHEN DIENER, PAT LAKO successful scaso The 1960 Munhall Indians completed a successful season with 6 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. Faced with a tough schedule, the Indians' records should be looked upon with much respect. The past season may be most easily remembered as being divided into two sections. In their first five games the Indians held their opponents to a total of 7 points while amassing 127 points themselves. Needless to say Munhall won all five games handily. Then came the Baldwin game. Rated a two touchdown underdog, Baldwin played an inspired ballgame and held Munhall to a scoreless tie. From this game to the end of the season Munhall's record showed 1 win and 2 losses, which gave them their overall record of 6 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. This was also a team which had many standout performers. The backfield was spearheaded by line-busting Bob Kane. During the course of the season he rushed for more than 600 yards. Alongside Kane was the little scatback, Al Detillo. Although he was injured for almost one-third of the season, the mighty mite gained close to 400 yards. Calling signals and serving as a steadying influence, Denny Mihaly played fine ball as quarterback of the 1960 team. A stellar performer all season long for the Indians was Bill Howley, the rugged, pass-catching end. Anchoring the line were such stalwart players as Bob Brown, Don Ondo, Ted Ratkus, and Andy Straka. These were some of the boys who helped make the 1960 Indians a team to be reckoned with by all. The idea that Munhall had a strong team was verified when five boys were selected as All Western Conference standouts. On the first team were Bob Kane at fullback and Bill Howley at end. Bob Brown and Don Ondo were selected for guard and tackle on the second team and Ted Ratkus was given honorable mention at tackle. Besides these Bill Howley was chosen for the third team on the All W.P.I.A.L squad, and he was also given honorable mention for the All State Team. Munhall has always been known for their ability to field good football teams, and this past season was no exception. The names mentioned above were just a few of the boys who helped make this year of 1960 another successful football season for head coach Nick Kliskey and Munhall High School. 131 VARSIty pOOtBAll ROW 1: D. Mr. Thomas Mr. O'Toole The 1960-61 Indians, coached by Mr. Pross Thomas and assisted by Mr. Michael O'Toole, played better than .500 ball against some of the stiffest opposition in our area. Our Big 3 who led the Indians to this record were Joe Kelley, Jim Dudas, and Bill Howley. While playing his first full year on the varsity team, Joe Kelley was a tower of strength under the back-boards and managed to lead the team in rebounds. An all round basketball player was Jim Dudas. He was second to Kelley in rebounds and one of the leading scorers on the team. Bill Howley, the third man of the trio, wasn't a high scorer, but he showed his value to the team time after time when he passed off to teammates for easy baskets. It was mainly the hard work and determination of these three players and the other members of the team that enabled Pross Thomas to compile his first winning season as a head varsity basketball coach. The members of this year's team did something that no other Munhall team had done in 40 years, they beat Homestead twice. After a close 46-45 win on our floor we beat them at their gym 59-54. In the last game of the year we were given another great thrill when Big Jim Dudas broke all of the Munhall scoring records as he hit for 40 points against Baldwin. Our 1960-61 team will be one that we will long remember for their spectacular accomplishments. 140 ROW 1: M. Novak, W. Ondo, R. Murray, W. Glenn, J. Gilliard, J. Forrester. ROW 2: J. Lacey, R. COACHES Mr. Wilson and Dr. Charlton Under the superior coaching of Mr. Wilson and Dr. Charlton our rifle team once again ruled as W. P. I. A. L. champions. They accomplished this for the fifteenth time in the last twenty years, and they also added the State Championship, National All-Girls Team Championship, and the National High School Mixed Team Championship to their list of spectacular accomplishments for the second straight year. Top senior sharpshooters were Barbara Cerra, Brownyn Evans, Trilby Busch, Christie Harman, Judy Patterson, Margie Peterman and Gary Funk. Along with these stellar performers there had to be something else, and that was the outstanding coaching. There is not a school in the country with rifle teams that can compare with the many that Munhall has had in the past twenty years. Truly, there is something extra special in the way our teams have been trained, and there will continue to be great teams in the future under the excellent coaching of Mr. Wilson and Dr. Charlton. 145 wRestLecs Our 1960—61 wrestling team, under the coaching of Mr. Steven DeAugustino, had one of the best records in many years at Munhall High School. Serving the team as captain and wrestling in the 145 pound class, Denny Mihaly was the most colorful and winningest wrestler to grapple for Munhall. In the 133 pound class was the mightymite of football, Al Detillo, who wrestled for his second year on the varsity team. Also wrestling for his second year on the varsity team was our 165 pounder, Ron Buday. One of the strongest members on the team was Bob Brown, a 180 pounder. Representing our team in the unlimited division was Don Walters. These five seniors played a large part in making this a team which brought much pride to its coach, Steve DeAugustino, and to our Alma Mater. compiled outstanding RecoRd. ROW 1: D. Nodd, H. Vinay, R. P. I. A. L. competition. This is the newest sport to come to Munhall High School, and the boys worked long and hard to make their season successful. The captain of our swimming team was Tom Diener. Because of an injury, Tom was unable to swim in competition for over a month. One of the few experienced divers was Bob Oglevee, and he was a valuable asset to the team in its diving events. The team was also helped in its swimming events by seniors Woody Wilson and Tom Chesmer. This year's team consisted mostly of sophomores and juniors, and by the experience gained they will develop into fine swimmers for the future. For this reason, there will be better years ahead for Munhall's swimming team and Coach William Furrer. 148 ROW 1: C. O'Hore, manager; D. Phillips, M. Hegedus, R. Moyer, M. Cloonan, T. Diener, B. The 1960 baseball team was another in the long line of fine ballclubs from Munhall High School. Under the able management of Nick Kliskey this year's team compiled a record of 7 wins and 2 losses in one of the stronger sections of the W.P.I.A.L. With this record the Munhall diamonders won their section for the second year in a row and advanced to the playoffs for the W.P.I.A.L. championship. In the first playoff game they met a strong Donora team, and in a tight pitchers' duel the Munhall nine won 2-1. After this win over Donora the Munhall team advanced to the semi-finals to meet Norwin. In a free-swinging game that saw thirteen runs scored, Norwin came out on top 7-6, and this defeat eliminated Munhall from W.P.I.A.L. play. Munhall's record then showed a respectable 8 wins and 3 losses for a very successful season. 150 MUNHALL'S RECORD SECTION Munhall 10 McKeesport 2 Munhall 3 Baldwin 0 Munhall 6 Clairton 3 Munhall 10 Shadyside Academy 9 Munhall 6 Duquesne 2 Munhall 0 McKeesport 2 Munhall 3 Baldwin 1 Munhall 3 Clairton 4 Munhall 7 Duquesne 3 W.P.I.A.L PLAYOFF Munhall 2 Donora 1 Munhall 6 Norwin 7 v .-r.' • 151 COMPLIMENTS HARVEY'S MEN'S WEAR 216 EAST EIGHTH AVENUE Homestead, Pennsylvania — CALL — HO 1-3647 HARTLEY SUPPLY Building Supplies Lumber Millwork 1065 Forrest Avenue West Homestead Pennsylvania HO 1-6881 PARKWAY Record Shops, Inc. 203 E. 8th Ave., Homestead, Pa.
