ALMA MATER ’Mid the hills of Pennsylvania, At the gate way of the West Stands our dear old Munhall High School Loved by all of us the best. Gathered round her stately portals, Sweetest memories ever cling, Of the days when dear old Munhall Sheltered us beneath her wing. Old Munhall, dear old Munhall, Often we have heard thy praise; Often cheered with waving banners, In our dear old Munhall days. Still we love the dear old Munhall, We, thy loyal sons and true, Here’s a cheer and then another, Dear old Munhall, here’s to you. 2 THE MUNHISKO Pictorial Number 19 2 8 PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF MUNHALJo HIGH SCHCOIE TO THE FACULTY WHOSE INTEREST AND FRIENDLY GUIDANCE HAVE ENABLED US TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THIS, OUR PRIMARY PREPARATION FOR LIFE, WE RESPECTFULLY DEDICATE THIS PICTORIAL ISSUE OF THE MUNHISKO 4 Four short years have been our stay, Four short years that seem a day; Four short years of work and fun, Four short years that are almost done; Four years striving to do our best In work and play for M. H. S. Now it’s over, this work and fun, Farewell Munhall, our course is run. 5 Student Council OFFICERS President...............................................................Milan Kovalik Vice-President.......................................................Michael Timko Secretary.............................................................. During these years the Student Council has acted as a cooperative body between the faculty and the student body. This year it has continued to do so. Despite opinions to the contrary, Student Government is to continue in the future. The new Constitution was given its real test and was found to be very satisfactory for the school’s needs in years to come. The Council, having its members apportioned according to the enrollment of their respective classes, has been a very active body. The policy of holding bi-weekly meetings was adopted for the purpose of deliberating on the problems of the school’s government. The major part of its work has been carried out through committees as provided by the Constitution. The Hall andAudi-torium Committee executed its part well in regulating traffic and providing ushers for the Auditorium. The Social Activities Committee provided rules and regulations governing school functions, while the Club Committee had the special duty of granting charters to the schools clubs. In addition to this, the Council as a whole has acted as arbiter in several cases and its verdicts were accepted as final. Its activities and undertakings have been featured by the cooperation among its members. The crowning achievement of the year was the success of the Athletic Banquet. Without doubt, it can be called the biggest and best ever held at Munhall. In summing up the work of this Executive group, the Student Council of 1927-28 has proven itself to be one of the best and has done everything possible to carry out the school motto “Do in Cooperation.” 7 The Munhisko Staff Donald Zimmerman - - - -.............................Editor-in-Chief Margaret Bertram...................................................Assistant Editor Patrick McConville.............................................Business Manager Jack Speidel................................................Advertising Manager Ellen O’Neill.......................................................Literary Editor John Vines...................................................Boys' Athletic Editor Florence Hufnagle............................................Girls' Athletic Editor Bernice Jones.......................................................Calendar Editor Kenneth Owens.......................................................Exchange Editor Isabel Wozniak........................................................A umni Editor Miss Myers.......................................- - - - Faculty Advisor THE PICTORIAL STAFF Harry Rutter......................................................Editor-in-Chief George Richey....................................................Assistant Editor Jack McGill..............................................................Business Manager Thelma McClatchey............................................Advertising Manager Ellen O’Neill.....................................................Snapshot Editor James Feeney......................................................Snapshot Editor 8 The Munhisko As has been the custom for many years, the school paper, the Munhisko was again published. This 1927-28 issue is considered practically the best ever put out by the staff. From all sections came favorable comments which greatly aided the staff in its work. An issue of the paper was entered in an international contest. Although a letter from Mr. Franklin Banner, Professor of Journalism at Penn State congratulating us for a successful paper, was received, as yet no definite decision has been made. We are particularly proud of our paper because it is supported entirely by advertisements of local merchants and by this we feel that we have the support not only of our school, but also of the entire community and that they are solely responsible for its success. We shall take this opportunity to thank those people to whom we owe so much, and feel sure that the Senior Issue, the Pictorial will be a fitting close for so successful a year. Dear Reader: The staff expresses its most sincere thanks to you for your subscription. It wishes that you would not allow anyone to borrow your book, as it decreases the income of future pictorials. The staff thanks all those who have helped make this pictorial a success; the typists, class presidents, etc. The editor also wishes to acknowledge the service the Senior Class did for him in electing very capable assistants. They were rewarded for their work with new M.’s. These letters were appreciated by all, especially the football players who, we feel, deserved theirs. A number of last year’s team had no experience and others had but one year’s work. They have not won any championship yet. We may feel assured that they have furthered the cause of athletics in the development of clean sportsmen in Munhall. This year’s team was much lighter than their opponents who in some cases were heavier than college teams. Under the careful tutoring of a competent coach and the care of the student managers, Munhall was able to put out its best team in the last twelve years. The record for their year was 3 won, 3 lost and 1 tie. 31 Basketball Records Swissvale - - 27 Munhall - East Pittsburgh 22 Munhall Swissvale - - 31 Munhall - Edgewood 31 Munhall Homestead - 25 Munhall - Millvale 16 Munhall Duquesne - - 36 Munhall - Elizabeth 18 Munhall McKeesport - 24 Munhall - Glassport 16 Munhall Clairton - 28 Munhall - Edgewood 30 Munhall Homestead - 42 Munhall - Duquesne 35 Munhall Elizabeth - - 22 Munhall - McKeesport - 20 Munhall Millvale - 23 Munhall - Clairton 18 Munhall Glassport - 15 Munhall - East Pittsburgh 15 Munhall Erie Academy - - 26 Munhall - Braddock 22 Munhall Lettermen Richey T HOMAS Rutter Reinerth O’Neill Mathieson Kearns Martin Student Managers Schwartz McGill 28 20 28 18 18 46 20 32 16 38 20 18 25 17 26 26 36 43 33 56 28 16 32 Boys’ Basketball 19274928 The past basketball season was one of the most successful the hoys ever went through, winning eleven and losing eleven. The first call from Coach Goehring brought out practically all of the enthusiastic candidates. The coach worked hard and spent some of his spare time in reducing the squad to some promising material. Practices were held throughout the Christmas Vacation and these, aided by the ability of Coach Goehring benefited to a great extent. From the start of the season the boys showed real fight, but it seemed as though luck was against them for the greater part of the year. Not until the standing showed Munhall to be on the wrong side of the percentage column, did they get the breaks. The breaks combined with real ability and the “Spirit to Do or Die,” brought the team through to a whirlwind finish. The last eight games of the regular campaign were victories and aided in bringing up the standing of our team. Due to the fine showing of our squad they were given permission to make the trip to Waynesburg and participate in the Tournament. At Waynesburg the boys won their first games against the strong Erie Academy High and entered the second round with high spirits only to be defeated by Braddock, a close rival. We hope the team of 1928-29 has a greater season than the past one and has more success at Waynesburg than the team of 1927-28. MR. RICHARD ROWLEY Mr. Richard Rowley has for the past few years rendered his services to Mun-hall as trainer for the boys in all of their sports. His services have been appreciated by all of the boys with whom he has worked. Mr. Rowley is better known as “Dick.” We, the students of the Munhall High School certainly appreciated his services to our athletes. 33 Girls’ Basketball Glassport - - 8 Munhall 30 N. Lewllyn Mary Kohut Manager Helen Weideli 34 Summary of the Season This year much honor was brought to Munhall through the prowess of the girls. The Munhall girls brought home the “bacon” by winning the Allegheny County Championship of the Independent League. Much credit is due the girls who spent most every evening in practicing and training, and especially to the coach, who spent so much time in developing this fine team. This is the first time Munhall girls ever won the championship, but for the last two years they have been runners up. Last year they lost the most important game to Homestead. Munhall girls had seventeen games on their schedule and lost only three. We, the team wish to thank everyone who has in any way helped us. We wish to thank especially the School Board and to bring attention to the fact that this year for the first time, they award us with silver basketballs. As the squad is only losing three members and since it has so many competent subs waiting to step in, we feel very sure of winning this title next year. The captain-elect perhaps some of you do not know is Mary Kohut, and we all are sure that she will try and see that her team will carry the championship title as did the present captain, Grace Mc-Cague. 35 vS'c c re H ?py ' ec . tOMfl a ‘ HuM J?USH f tsf ' r Y arv ; lunHMltrPum OlHl.lL .f 0 ft •ITT V M Ardr ' p 3 b ET 36 37 PHOTOS IN THIS PICTORIAL were made in Homestead by H.
