Peckham. 954 rJLeaaue LA 9 ' ium, pions ■ n November 16, 1953--The first day of basketball practice! Boy-what a day running, calisthenics and settups. As th e days ran into weeks the process of getting in shape and learning techniques converted to the more pleasant team scrimmage. Finally, after three weeks of hard work the big day arrived -December 4- the first game of the season! The team was feeling good, and the Coach, of course, was on edge and nervous. Day after day they practiced hard, working together, striv- ing to build a better team. January IZ, 1954 and again January 15, the Wildcats met their only defeats of the playing season at the hands of Belle Plaine and Oxford. After that the work became harder and longer and in time it seemed to pay off. Mulvane managed to defeat the Augusta teami twice for the first time in many years. Then they met Leon on February 5 and after taking an easy victory- -became Sumwick League Champions for the second Consecutive season. The entire season proved to be exciting and profitable for the Fighting Wildcats of the 1953-1954 Season.

It was just before the game when one of the B team boys looked out of the dressing room door and said He ' s Here! They all rushed to the door and looked out across the gym. There he was! Mr. Goodwin, that is. This time he had on his bright red tie which the boys knew usually meant sure victory. The B boys had a tough time this season winning only about 50% of their games. There is a great future for Mulvane High School when some of these hard fighting boys become the top 10 Wild- cats for M. H. S. . . . S cLuud . . .Golly, the M.H. S. Freshman team had a tough schedule this year. They started off by play- ing Belle Plaine and Derby. Just imagine boys get- ting up early enough to be at school by 7:30 a.m. But these were a group of hard working boys, so they prac- ticed early two days a week and from 1:45 p.m. until 2:45 p. m. three afternoons a week.
