She was builT aT Kearney, d ' TTh HANDROMEDAH class, fashionable during The I943 To I945 New Jersey, an is o e war years. The ship is oT a one-sTack, Tlush deck design, displaces abouT I4,000 Tons when loaded, and is 460 TeeT long wiTh a 6I-TooT beam. Her mosT disTinguishing characTerisTics are The TwenTy-Tour landing craTT carried on her haTches. Cargo carried on board has en- compassed vehicles, weapons, raTions, and The Thousand and one oTher iTems needed To keep a modern army TuncTioning smooThly when hundreds oT miles Trom The nearesT basesoT supply. The ship's crew is experT in unloading, wheTher in calm or rough seas, unde'r peaceTul condiTions or while The roar oT baTTle goes on abouT Them. Near The end oT I944 The new ship was given iTs TirsT Training in amphibious warfare and Then ordered To The PaciTic To parTicipaTe in General MacArThur's "island hopping" campaigns, In February oT The Tollowing year The MULIPHEN joined The Torce which was To assaulT The Japanese sTronghold aT Iwo Jima, For Twelve days, under Kamikaze aTTack and The Tire oT enemy shore baTTe'ries, The ship unloaded I,4I3 Tons oT equipmenT, much oT iT ammuniTion and highly i'nTIammable aviaTion gasoline. Hardly pausing Tor breaTh, The MULIPHEN goT underway Tor Siapan and combaT- loaded I52 men oT The Second Marine Division and 3,800 Tons oT Their equipmenT, She became a parT oT Task Force SI, aiding in The oiperaTion ThaT has been Termed The "apex oT amphibious landings." ATTer The Tlare and Tire oT Okinawa, The "6 I " Tell inTo The quieT rouTine oT TransporTing cargo Trom one island To anoTher, awaiTing her nexT assaulT.
