Since fhe landing of Marine cargo on a beach is ihe primary mission of +he ship, if is easy +o see ihar fhe 'liunciions performed by fhe Boafswains Males and Seamen in fhe Deck force are closely allied io 'rhe ship's basic mission. ln shorr, fhe Bos'n Mares are as always +he "Backbone of 'the Fleet" The work done by 'fhese men under 'rhe direciion of fhe Firsr Lieu+enan+, Division Officers, rhe Ship's Bos'n lfhe salfiesi bille+ in ihis man's navyi, and Perry Officers requires a greal' deal of technical knowledge and compe- fence. Today's Boafswains Mare musi know more fhan Marlinspike Seamanship, especially on an AKA. His knowledge exfends fo amphibious warfare, cargo handling, rigging, boafs, gunnery, damage confrol and a hos? of ofher fields.
