THE MULBERRY TREE — 1988 Proud? You bet! The mysterious spirit and soul that keeps Mulberry High School vibrating with life; PRIDE! Pride ignites and burns brighter when each individual accepts who he is and strives for that common goal of being the best that he can be. This Pride is shown throughout Mulberry High in the students as well as in the faculty and staff. The Mulberry Panthers may lose a few battles but “no one can take away our right to fight and to NEVER SURRENDER!!” Proud? You Bet! Fads and Fashions Each year students are the target of propaganda from the media. Magazines show us how to dress, what make-up tricks to use, and that hair styles will make us more attractive to the opposite sex. We have pored through the latest issues of these tabloids to insure that we at Mulberry High are in style. Television shows us how to wear the latest fashions in a way to project our per- sonalities. The height of fashion this year is to accessorize as much as possible. Hats have entered the scene in order to top off the look. Make-up has become quite an issue this year as more and more males and females experiment with the newest colors. Fads and Fashions, they are a major part of high school life. Opening 5 Class time ... we spend it learning about the different areas that will affect our lives. We study to better ourselves in order to prepare for the new experiences that we may encounter. Sometimes the knowledge seems to be too much to digest all at once so we rest our brains with reverie, gossip, or frustration! The joys of class time are too numerous to mention. Opening 7 A, B, or C lunch ... Sometimes it does get confusing! No matter what our state of mind, the cafeteria’s atmosphere is a welcome change from chalkboards and homework assignments. School lunch- es speak for themselves, but at least they give us the opportunity to spend time with our peers without being told to “be quiet, get back to your seats, open your books to page ..and so on. A, B, or Clunch ... As the second hand ticks away, the school day finds students engaged in many various situations. Between class time the hall- ways are crowded with students trying to get their books, pass some notes, and make it to class on time. Thankful for lunch break, students take some of their precious minutes to relax and share unpressured moments with friends. Seniors Seniors Seniors 12 Opening Opening 13 14 Opening PEP RALLIES AND PRIDE Pep rallies ... those beautiful fall days when students are released from classes in order to encourage the Fighting Panthers on to conquer their rivals, defeat their foes, trample their adversaries and pray for a winning night of combat... those quiet mornings waiting to be shattered by “Doc” Harrison’s vocal chords screaming, “WHO’S NUMBER ONE?!!” The response from the enthusiastic students’ cheers sends bloodcurdling chills through any unsuspecting bystander. As the pep rallies near completion, students slowly desert the stands (anxious to return to their classes) while the spirit lingers, awaiting the evenings’ massacres. CANDIDS, CANDIDS, CANDIDS Words cannot explain I ook mom. no cavities!” Candids 17 1 want my 4-Wheel Drive I just love teaching! You’re gonna get it ... SENIORS OF ’88 By the time a student has reached his senior year, he should have developed a certain sense of his own personal dignity and a satisfaction in his work and achievements which reveal his dis- tinct personality. Pride is a unique quality that characterizes the panther and makes him an endangered species. Like the panther. Mulberry High School students have that uniqueness and ex- emplify the qualities of a winner. To the MHS Panthers — continue to let your Pride” show. You have passed the first, and most likely the most difficult, part of high school, your Freshman year. On the first day of school you may have felt discouraged because the higher level students looked down on you; each hallway resembled the next in a new and larger school; and extracurricular activities of all varieties were offered. Through many tests and mounds of homework, you have risen to a much more respectable facet of being. Stand proud, for you are the leader of the future, the graduating Class of 1991. Will you have some compassion, or will you get out the frustration you felt at being the youngest in the high school? The choice, of course, is yours. Monday was Nerd Day, Tuesday was 50's Day, College Day was Wednesday, Thurs- day the students dressed up (also Home- coming Candidate Presentation in the gym), and Friday, Homecoming Day, eve- ryone wore blue and white to show their school spirit. All in all, it was a great week, excitement was everywhere and Pride filled the school grounds. All that spirit helped; after all, we won our Homecoming football game!!! Parade 85 Each year as homecoming ap- proaches, students become involved with the construction of floats to represent their clubs in the annual parade. The parade involves mem- bers of the school, school board of- ficials, feeder schools, principals and various other groups from the community. The floats all follow a central theme, this year's followed a movie theme. The judges had a dif- ficult time this year selecting the winners but after much deliberation this is what they chose: Art Club with “Halloween , Science Club with “Streakbusters”, the Cafeteria Workers with “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. ” 86 Parade PRIDE’S PLACE 1 HOMECOMING CANDIDATES The Mulberry High School Football stadium was packed with forty-two senior representative in tuxedos and formats. Their families and friends eagerly awaited the results of the voting by the entire student body of MHS which took place the previous day. The crowd applauded for their favorites as each couple marched down the fifty yard line as the band played “Somewhere Out There. ” A silence grew over the crowd as they anxiously awaited the announcement of the 1987-1988 Homecoming King and Queen. Second runner-up to King were Matt Collins and Chuck Duffey, second-runner up to Queen was Stacy Bradshaw. First runner-up to King was Chris Hurst, first runner-up to Queen was Cindy Barnes. Finally the 1987-1988 MHS Homecoming King and Queen were announced, Albert Green and Kandis Baker. Throughout the 1987-88 school year, the activities of the Student Council were willingly supported by the student body, the faculty, and the administration. As president of the Student Council I encourage the students who are continuing at Mul- berry High School to strive to make this the best school possible, to seek the cooperation of all those con- cerned, and not to yield to the pres- sures of non-conformity, lackadai- sical attitudes, and undue criticisms. It is economics, horticulture, internal relations, and things you 've never even thought of. The year 1987-1988 was a great success in the field of Agriculture. There were many highlights as Mulberry students involved themselves in many of the activities open to them through their involvement in FFA. Frank Waller was the Central Florida Regional FFA Area Star Agribusiness person and was also a candidate for State FFA President. Justin Harden and Conway Barnett were the delegates from MHS who attended the National FFA Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri. Kim Thornton was chosen to sing with the National Chorus, the only member from Florida to obtain this honor. Devele Andrews was high scorer at the Publix Farms Swine Judging Contest. The Mulberry FFA Chapter was selected to be one of twenty-five chapters from across the state to enter an exhibit in the Florida State Fair held in Tampa, Florida. They also had an entry of an FFA Exhibit in the 1988 Citrus Showcase in Winter Haven, Florida. Chris Conley, Robert Leverett, and Jimmie Roberts entered hogs in the Polk County Youth Fair held in Bartow. Some of these included beating Lake Wcdes, Haines City, and Hardee at the Homecoming game. He was most surprised by beating Hardee because they had only lost three games in three years. He was very impressed with Albert Green as quarter- back, and felt that Chuck Duffey was the most im- proved player of the year. Coach Vic said that he owes a great deal of grat- itude to his coaching staff and fellow faculty mem- bers for their support during the season. He sends words of encouragement to the players, hoping that the experience of playing football at Mulberry was rewarding ... It finished the season with a 17-5 record and was the runner-up to the district ti- tle. The ultimate high point of the season was when, for the FIRST TIME EVER, the team captured the POLK COUNTY CHAMPI- ONSHIP! The spirit stick is only a mere example of the spirit and pep that they share. Two weeks before cheerleading camp, the squad worked diligently to perfect its cheering and building techniques in order to represent Mulberry High School with pride. The hard work obviously paid off because the cheer- leaders landed an Award of Excellence nom- ination. Strong friendships were made and these formed “sister-like” bonds. Little “sibbling quarrels” were not uncommon but they were always worked out, and these girls have become friends for life! Why did you want to become an exchange student? Matt: I wanted to learn English more perfect and I get a break from my other school. Mira: I thought it would be a great experience and I would learn better English. Q: What has been the most exciting and memorable moment as an exchange student? Matt: I’ve enjoyed the parties and especially learning to play basketball. Mira: Meeting a lot of people. Q: How do German schools differ from American schools? Matt: We attend school six days a week. We start school at 7:45 and get out at 1:00. We have three different high schools based on our academic levels. At Mulberry the students change classes, in Germany, the teachers move to the students. Mira: We spend the school day together with about thirty other students in our class. School is just from 8:00 to 13:00. We don’t have to eat lunch at school and we have between twelve and fourteen classes a week. We stay in the same room most of the time. ' I I «• i i «• I t It The time has come again to let my children go out into the world and survive. For seventy-six years I have trained peo- ple; doctors, lawyers, miners, mayors, and even warriors. Hear me world, for this year comes my best. I have gathered together the masters of skills in an effort to educate the minds of this country ’s future leaders. My pupils have gone forth to become teachers and have returned to educate others. One of my pupils went forth and did what others could only dream of doing, he invented the computer. Unfortunately, I bear many sorrows as well. 1 wear a medal with the names of the people who gave their lives in wars. I wear a ring in memory of CPL. Ernest Jean Cunningham, of the 152nd squadron, who gave his life for his country. At the end of each day, I look into the eyes of freedom and the glory which blazes in her eyes. The pupils of the past have paved the way for the leaders of the future. This year I am sending 145 well-trained minds and bodies into the hostile environments outside my reach of pro- tection. They have been given the basic technology to become scientists, judges, corporate leaders, artists, writers, and en- gineers. These brave leaders, which have passed all my trials, are ready for the greatest test of all; life. I only ask in return for my patience and guidance that you send your children to me and allow them to experience too, the full glory of knowledge as you have. May the sun shine upon you and the wind blow you forward toward your destinies. You will always be welcomed here, for the Panther walks to the end of the earth for its pupil. Fare- well. Say no word to worsen matters; think kind thoughts instead. If you know you have always tried to do your best, don’t be embittered or disgruntled. Let it rest. If things are done or said with good intent leave them for a moment. Things get worse with argument . . .
