Pathways to the Present Mulberry may look like any other small Florida town, but its history sets it apart. It has the notability of not only growing from a tree, but of having a unique past that reads like a story out of the Wild West. In its beginning. Mulberry was thinly settled and logging was the principal industry. Trains picked up the lumber and put off passengers and mail at the mulberry tree beside the railroad tracks. In 1886. phosphate ore was discovered at the mouth of the Peace River. Phosphate soon became the major industry. The Atlantic Coast Line purchased most of the smaller railroads. Goods were still marked to be ‘‘put off at the mulberry tree on the Bone Valley Branch. In time, these shipments became so numerous that the railroad built a station next to the tree and naturally named it Mulberry. Gradually log houses, stores, and saloons were built. A real town appeared, but one which was very much like a boom town of the old west. Firearms were carried because of the lawlessness. It is said that each Monday morning a coroner’s inquest was held for victims of the Saturday night troublemakers. With no jail in Mulberry and the nearest sheriff a half day’s ride away in Bartow, mob justice ruled. Legend says that the innocent tree held many a lynch mob's noose. The first person to be hung from the tree was a Negro. He killed a man in Bartow and after he was caught, he was hung without trial. The tree stood lifeless for many years as though ashamed to live when it had contributed to so many deaths. Then one spring day. green leaves sprouted from its branches sym- bolizing a new life for the town itself. Lawabiding newcomers came to take over the town from gamblers and outlaws.
