We often take our good old time and idle hours away. Forgetting that we'll not succeed, with hands that only play. Beginning is a trying test and one we all defy ... We never move a single step by only standing by; The fellow who is up and gone is halfway up the hill. While we are planning what we'll do, we're only standing still. The quickest way to win the prize is soon to find your place; Tis sure we'll only reach the goal by getting in the race. You cannot wait for someone else... you must be there yourself; That knowledge doesn't mean a thing that's stored upon your shelf. The present is your chance to do, and not some other time ... The longer that you wait to start, the tougher is the climb. Beginning is your highest step, for when you've once begun, You'll find the job you dreaded so is already halfway done. 2 The 1974-75 school year is beginning. Summer vacation is over and everyone is ready for a new start. There is a feeling around campus of new- ness, a new chance to do good. Emotions vary with each individual. Some are happy to be back in school. Others wish the summer vacation could last forever. Many are excited about new classes, new teachers, and meeting new friends. The first day of school is filled with curiosity and maybe a little nervous feeling in the stomach. Ev- eryone is wondering what this year will hold in store. 11 eyes are looking to the DAYS OF THE FUTURE ... i .4 On that first day of school as the eyes wander, they see many old, fa- miliar sights and some new ones: The Mulberry High School sign greets all those driving up; The eariy morning buses set each school day in motion; Friends meet once again at the statue; and, of course, on that first day of this school year and for weeks afterward, no curious eyes missed the construc- tion work and workers around cam- pus. But in most opinions, the best sight on campus on that first day of school is the sight of old friends. It is the time to get together with them once again to laugh and talk and have fun. There are sev- eral signs of a new school year. Changes and work are being done to the school. A new group of seniors begin the year by proudly showing off their new rings. The football play- ers are back at work. Freshmen, after picking up their new and first high school sched- ules, walk around looking lost and scared for a few days. Yes, a new school year has begun. Who knows what the DAYS OF FUTURE will bring? In Memory of ... Photo by Bruce Hosking LEON VETRANO, (1935-1974), one of Mulberry High School's greatest teachers. He'll always be in the hearts and minds of MHS students. Leon Vetrano was noted for his outstanding talent in the field of Art. Although his life was short, he influenced many students to a great extent in the field of Art. One of his much quoted sayings illus- trates his great concern and love for his students- We get wisdom from older people, but hope for the world comes from the young. They're Cod's little erasers ' 8 The Administration of Mulberry High School is composed of Mr. Harold Barker, Principal; Mr. Bill Flanagan, Vice-Principal; and Mrs. Henrie Sparkman, Curriculum Coor- dinator. These three operate Mulberry High School. They have a complex, demanding job. They oversee the improvements of the school while coordinating the diverse work of the teachers. They give advice to colleagues and patrol the halls. They handle problems ranging from discipline to scheduling to guidance, and they exert influence over every phase of the school's operation. These three give gener- ously of their time and effort to improve the school. Their effort results in the efficient op- eration of the school. By maintaining Mul- berry High School's efficient operation, the Administration insures that the school serves as an important part of the city and fulfills its obligation to the citizens of tomorrow. The physical education department is the only opportunity that students have to get their much needed ex- ercise at school. Everyone knows that when you feel good physically, you are more mentally alert. Physical education is designed to help students get in better physical shape so that they will actually learn more in their other classes. As well as giving exercises for specific muscle groups, the MHS P.E. de- partment tries to include as many carry-over activities as it can, so that our students will continue to exercise after they have completed physical education requirements. It is important to develop the mind, as we grow, but without the devel- opment of the body with the mind, the end result is only half a being. Physical education in school is your chance to help your body grow as best it can-Don't Miss It. 19 Reserve Officers Training Corps TOP-Sergeant Rolander enjoys the sur- roundings of nature during his free time. The club meetings were somewhat unusual in that they were held at Barrow's Pizza King on Monday nights rather than at school. Early in the year the Honor Society sold booster buttons for the Leon Vetrano Memorial Fund. In December, the members of the Honor Society decorated the busses going to the state football playoffs. In March, they sponsored a soc hop at the new Mul- berry Civic Center. Varsity Cheerleaders Lead School Spirit The varsity cheerleaders worked hard this year to spread school spirit and support the Panthers. They showed their dedication by spending hours prac- ticing cheers, learning new ones, and making up their own cheers and chants. They made posters, signs, and made a scrapbook for the senior football players. They also decorated the locker room be- fore the football team left for Boca Raton. They had fun with the players on bus trips teaching them chants, songs, and cheers. The cheerleaders spon- sored a Lick 'Em Day and a Hats Off to the Pan- thers Day during the year. Their main wish is that next year they will see more audience participation in their cheers and more school spirit. Dream with me of days gone by With pleasant memories Of all the times in Junior High To Senior Prom Committees. And once again we will recall The things we often did ... No matter how great, or even so small These things we can't be rid. The school, the friends, the old bookstore The teachers of our classes. The frantic rush to reach our rooms Amid the hundred masses. These memories are something which My heart will always store ... And the joys and happiness they bring Are mine forevermore. —Clifford M. Spencer 141 Places and Days That Have Passed 142 143 DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED While I am young And not yet old, I wish my future Could be told. I wish to look Way up ahead To know the inevitable I think in my head. But to know the inevitable Is to look on the past; The days of the future Have already passed. So while I am young, I will think ahead; While I look at the past That's already been. Soon it will be The day that's last. When the days of the future Have already passed. —Clifford M. Spencer 144
