HISTORY In 1948, eager miners with just small picks and shovels—very little to work with, but much to look forward to in the future—started excavating for a mine. Under the supervision of Miss Nancy Ward and Mr. Arnold Holmes, a big election was held, where we selected Wogie Badcock as foreman and Alfred McNeal as his as- sistant. Sue Turner was elected time-keeper and Dorinda Simmons collected all the in- come for the year. With these people bossing us, we really had to get to work at the big task ahead. We gathered in the gym one day to hold a big union meeting. Seven representatives, with the biggest mouths, were chosen to help arouse the spirit needed for victory in foot- ball over all the other corporations we would play. However, the miners of '48 were able to put only one representative, Vera Futch, with the upper-class miners to help cheer at games. Time hung heavily on our hands so we got busy and began to mine many things such as, pins. Panther shirts, and stickers, to put them on sale. They were easy to sell and we made much money. We used this money to give the upper-class miners a farewell party at Eagle Lake, as they were promoted to a higher section. After three months vacation from the mines, we were eager to get back to work, so in the year '49 we started out once more, this time under the supervision of Mrs. Myrtle Jennings. Immediately we got to work for a greater production than the year before, with Charlie Brown foreman and Sylvia Haynsworth, his assistant. Gerry Blue kept the time- books and Dorinda again kept all the income. Early in September, we met to select our rings, which we would soon receive for our accomplishments at the mines. Many different types of rings were on display. We chose an oblong style. From this date, until the first of December, the miners were continually chatting about these golden objects. It seemed to take forever, for their mining to be completed. Football soon bounced in and completely knocked the months of October and Nov- ember from the calendar. Several of our girls were chosen for cheerleaders. They were, Mary Hope, Martha Ann and Gerry. Other mines were working overtime, selling soft drinks, hot dogs and peanuts. We made a heap of gold this way. After several football games, we sponsored dances, and had a very good time. The fun had just begun when homecoming popped up! We were proud to crown one of our miners, Sylvia Hayns- worth, as queen. Then, one cold frosty morning, there was a great uproar at the mine. Our rings had arrived! Before the day was over, everyone around had seen these wonderful objects. As we still needed to make more gold, each minor sold magazine subscriptions. A terrific play called The Angell Brats also added to our store of gold. The next big event facing us was the miner's banquet for the upper-class miners, who would soon leave our mines. This banquet, which was held at the V.F.W. Hall in Lakeland, we de- cided was the best one in years. Vacation time came again and then with the advent of September, we started our last year at the mines. Now, Jay Maddox was the foreman and Dewey Hilton, his assist- ant. Sue Turner kept the time-books and Patty Sparkman took care of the income. Our first mining adventure began when we sold Christmas cards, paper and pins. The opening of the football season made a great impression on us, for this would be our last year at these mines. Gerry, Mary Hope, Vera and Martha Ann were very success- ful cheerleaders. We again produced an excellent play Aunt Cathie’s Cat”. Thus the year rolled around, and the under class miners bade us farewell and wished us luck with a banquet, where we had plenty of good food and a most enjoyable evening. Then we reached the goal for which we had been striving, the ceremony of graduation. At last we could put into practice what we had learned and work for an even higher place in the world. So we completed our work in the Mulberry High School Mine. The Mulberry Football Team won 8 out of 10 games played on its 1949 schedule and defeated their South Florida Conference neighbor, Bartow, 12 to 6 for the second time in 20 years. Seven victories in nine league games earned Coach Holmes charges third place in the strong Ridge Conference. The Panther eleven composed of many inexperienced players started off the season defeating Bartow and Haines City. Line Coach, Glenn Reed, had those Panthers charging hard and blocking well against those two teams. A strong Lake Wales team defeated a game but outclassed Panther eleven in the third contest of the season. A large crowd saw Mulberry defeat Sebring in a thrilling game 26 to 25. The fol- lowing week the Panthers won a hard fought victory over the tough Kissimmee Cowboys. Avon Park was the victim of an enraged team and hit the dust 32 to 14. The Kathleen Red Devils simply outplayed Mulberry and defeated us 28 to 7. An under dog Fort Meade team almost scored an upset, but finally lost to the Panthers 7 to 6. Spectacular break away runs by Wogie Badcock and Bobby Byrd featured the 26-0 victory over Frostproof. Auburndale was the victim in the last game of the season 19 to 6. Charles Anderson, Jimmy Willis and Alfred McNeal played fine ball all evening against the Bloodhounds. Lettermen completing their playing careers were Wogie Badcock, Alfred McNeal, Jerry Earp, Charles Walker, Guy Perry Anderson, Dewey Hilton, Billy Hayman, Jerry Polk and Jay Maddox.
