The night began on a cruise aboard the “Lady of the Lake” on Lake Geneva. The theme of the evening, “One More Night,” filled the hearts of all. Rick Gonzalez and Kelly Cervero were crowned king and queen. A “first” at the 1985 prom was the crowning of a prince and princess. The honors went to Sherry Baksic and Dave Barker. Post prom activities were held at the Leeshore where all danced to the music of The Features. Activities continued on through Sunday when all left for Great America. Special thanks to the class officers and to Mrs. Roe who did an excellent job creating a successful and memorable Prom ’85. ard. Act Five. They played a nice va- riety of music which everyone enjoyed dancing to. The grand march was the highlight of the evening for the court, especially for Kelly Chase and Pete Durand, who were named queen and king. All couples danced and socialized during the evening, which will go down in the memories of many as the best homecoming ever. We have two special people to thank for their roles in making MHS a better place to learn and grow. Mr. Arnott was the school’s contact between the con- tractor and the architect. He had the monumental job of setting up the school for the phase-by-phase moves. He did an excellent job of coordinating the moves to acco- modate the remodeling and educational processes. Mr. Kneser, we are told, has an uncanny ability to spot potential problems or to assess problems and come up with solutions. His ideas and suggestions proved to be very valuable. He was also responsible for coordinating his staff for the transfer of classroom materials and fur- niture. These two men worked together and the result is that we now have a building to be proud of. We thank these gentlemen for their efforts and we applaud their suc- cess. Don Kneser. Head Custodian and David Arnott, Assistant Principal. The caliber of play in the new Braveland Conference is at an extremely com- petitive level. The 1985 “Indians showed that they belong in such a con- ference with an exciting brand of foot- ball that put them right in the “thick of the conference race. Steady im- provement, game by game and week by week, was the “mold of the Muk- wonage Football Team for the major- ity of the season. All in all, it was a very rewarding season. Even though we didn’t finish up on an outstanding note, to play the toughest schedule that any Mukwonago team has ever played and still be in the title chase in the eighth week of the season, is a tri- bute to a great team, the 1985 Muk- wonago Indians. 46 Varsity Football Coach Hoagland and Ken Polster discuss strategy. The Indian offense, “set”, “coiled,” and ready to “strike.” Bruce Nettiesheim showing some great “moves”. The “hold by Schmitz, the “kick by Barker. Good! Jubilation! Everything pointed toward a stronger team than last year! We lost our 1 singles player and our only experienced doubles player early in the season. We were better than our 0-7 record in conference showed. Our season record of 12 wins and 17 losses gives a better picture of our season against all the teams we met! This was our first in the Braveland Confer- ence and we learned a lot from playing these high caliber teams. JV Row 1: Cindy Sin, Lynn Stefanski, Michelle Schreiber. Their last season with the Parkland Con- ference was successful becasue the Indians captured the Conference Indoor, the Conference Final Championships. They added “meet titlers” to their M-Club relays, the Franklin Saber Invite and the Grafton Blackhawk Invita- tional. The Indians won over Franklin by 90 points and won a thrilling one-half point victory over host Grafton in the Blackhawk Invitational. They capped the season by winning both district and sectional titles, and they scored 8 points at the state meet in Madison. At state the 400 relay team finished third and Jeff Kortes finished 5th in the 200. The junior varsity won all invitationals. The freshmen won the Oconomowoc Relays, Badger Invitational, Frank- lin, and placed third at Hartland. Mukwonago’s great depth and fine individual performances were responsible for the tremendous season the Indians had. Fine perfor- mances were turned in by the following seniors: Mike Chapes, Paul Hyde, Mike Vick, Jay Dybul, Jim Freiberger, Pete Asmann, Rick Mazurkiewicz, Dan McPhetridge, and Jeff Peterson. The performances of the underclassmen - Rob Witon, Jeff Talaska, Jim Mollet, Steve Peterson, Tim Crawley, Ross Pallin, Bill Schmitz, Joe Frohne, Tom Wendtland, Ed Nieskes, Pete Durand, Ernie Estes, Scott Hein, Phil White, Ken Fenske, and Mark Foley-should make the 1986 team a challenger in the new Braveland Conference. The 400 relay team, made up of Andy Fischer (front), and Rob Witon. Dennis Herbst and Jeff Kortes (Back), set a school record in the 400 relay in their third place finish in the state meet with 43.13. They won the conference relays, placed second in the M-Club Invitational, and finished first in the conference outdoor. Along with the 400 meter relay team, three individuals qualified for the state meet. These were Lisa Milosch in the 800 meter run, Kim Englert in the high jump, and Sherri Koknke in the 100 meter hurdles. A record of 50 seconds was set by the 400 meter relay team of Sue Balistreri, Sherri Kohnke, Sue Benson, and Nicole Lester. The triple jump at 357” and the 100 meter hurdles at 14.8 were won by Sherri Kohnke. Jenny Stenberg captured the discus record of 118’8' 2”. The 1600 meter and 800 meter runs by Lisa Milosch set records at 5:32.6 and 2:18.2 minutes, respectively. The 1600 meter relay team of Lisa Milosch, Lynn Pozorski, Kelly Gabrovic, and Cheryl Milosch was another record setter at 4:11.7. The team also won the conference outdoor meet, scoring 168 points for the highest total ever. We are expecting the 85-86 year in the new conference to be a fine opportunity to do well again. The varsity had a 9-0 dual meet record and captured the Braveland Conference crown as well as winning the Mukwonago Invitational, the Brookfield Central Invitational, and the Regionals. The team is recognized nationally as an All-American team. Senior Peggy Mackesey and junior Kris Nordentoft led the team in scoring. Peggy won many events and was very successful with her floor exercise. She won the confer- ence championship and later became recognized as an All-American in that event. She also won All-American honors in the all-around event. Kris won the regional balance beam and all-around title and later was named All-American in uneven bars and all- around. Others who contributed significantly to the championship efforts were Sally Kind who scored heavily on floor exercise, beam, and uneven bars. Dawn Galagan who scored on floor and balance beam, Kelly Gehring whose primary events were uneven bars and vault, Jenny Carey who was a beam specialist, and Kim Lambert who added punch on floor exercise and vault. Other letter winners included Theresa Busock, Kris Davidson, Danica Vanasse, Missy Harshaw and Jackie Fritz. Then the final match came down to Mukwonago and Salem, with Salem coming out on top and Mukwonago taking second. The season was filled with hard work, a lot of fun, and many special memories. This season was a developmental season for many of our wrestlers. Even though our dual meet season record doesn’t reflect it (3-4 inconference and 4-5 overall), we were a stronger team this year. The competition was strong, which hurt our seeds in many tournaments, but by the end of the season or the end of a wrestler’s high school career, the team members are better wrestlers because of it. At the Dells Team Tournament, we got handled by Port Washington and Manitowoc, but easily handled Two Rivers. At West Allis, we finished in sixth place out of 16 teams. At Port Washington we finally wrestled well up there and finished in fourth, edging out Manitowoc who had “killed” us earlier in the year. In the Milwaukee Area Tournament, we finished in third place out of 29 teams. After finishing fourth in conference, we managed to send three wrestlers to Sectionals and one wrestler qualified for State - Richard Katzfey, our first freshman ever to qualify. Our varsity this year consisted of one freshman, five sophomores, two juniors and four seniors. We ended the season as a very competitive team. Next year looks to be even better and by 87-88 — look out! With off-season work and a competitive attitude, Mukwonago will be on the rise for the next few years. Ye Olde Englishe Christmas Feast,” was the Christmas presentation of the MHS Choral Depart- ment. The Chamber Singers, Treble Choir, and Mixed Chorus, under the direction of Charmaine Kuharske, recreated a Renaissance Christmas celebration. With each trumpet fanfare, another tradition of Merrie Olde England was discovered. Among these were announcements of the wassail, the boarshead, the entertainment, and the passing of the dessert. Also featured were brass and string musicians, jesters, trumpeters, recorder players, a juggler, a magician, a minstrel, and bell ringers. Goodbye to teachers who helped us learn and showed us all so much concern. Goodbye to basketball and track. We had our fun and won’t be back. Goodbye to rules that “no one broke” and final week of prank and joke. Goodbye to study hall - so much fun We studied hard but now we’re done. And one last time - goodbye to school and freshmen swimming in our basement pool. We’re finally done and out of here after four long but exciting years. Back in Norway he has finished the required nine years of school and is now attending a secondary school which prepares the student who is going on to higher education. He says that Norwegian and U.S. schools are quite different. For example, he says MHS is more strict and in Norway you have to decide for yourself whether or not you are going to learn anything. What Arnt likes best about America is that the people are more open and friendly than in Norway. He says where he comes from, people try to keep to themselves and so it is difficult to get to know them. Malin Andersen - Sweden Malin is 17 years old and comes to us from Sweden. Her father is a salesman and serviceman for a milk machine company. Her mother is a home econom- ics teacher. Some of Malin’s interests include ski- ing, cycling, and traveling. After school she wants to go on to college and continue her studies in eco- nomics. She would like to either start her own com- pany or do something in public relations. Her main goal is to be self-sufficient and independent. Malin thinks the U.S. is very insensitive and that our school is very strict. She thinks Sweden is more open towards other countries and languages. 184 Exchange Students Christina Ahlquist - Sweden Chris is 18 years old and is an exchange student from Sweden. She lives in a suburb of Stockholm, which she says is a very beautiful city. She has the same sparetime activities in Sweden as we do here. For instance, she enjoys going to movies and out dancing, and sometimes just going out to have a hamburger. She says they have all the big fast food chains (McDonald’s, Wendy’s, etc.) in Sweden. In the wintertime she likes to go skiing with her friends at night. She skis mostly downhill, but sometimes cross-country as well. She has been studying English since the fourth grade because it is required. Chris wants to add that, yes, they do listen to the same music as we do here and she thinks that they even get it before we do. Finn Mortensen - Denmark Finn says that being an exchange student is a great experience because you learn to be part of another culture and life style. He says you learn things that you would never learn in your home country. Finn says it was a big change for him to come to America from Denmark. He says he now has started to live and sometimes even “think” the American way. In parting, Finn would like to say, I like Mukwonago, I like Wisconsin, and I like America.” Peter Holst - Denmark Peter says that when you are living in another country you learn things about their culture and way of life, things you would never learn in your own country. For Peter it was a big change to come to the U.S.A. from a country which is very liberal from our point of view. He had to get used to hav- ing a curfew (he hasn’t had one in Denmark since he was 15), and the fact that we have a drinking age here, just to name a few. Peter thinks he will have an even bigger culture shock going back to Denmark. He says he is happy to be here and is enjoying his stay. Exchange Students 185 A Abler. Christine - 1. 30 Abraham.
