Although the floor was small, everyone enjoyed dancing to the popular songs of the band, 'The Music Machine. Paul Hyde and Charlie Karempelis were crowned King and Queen. After the dance, everyone headed for the high school. For the first time in many years, a post prom, including games, ping pong, MTV, and the movie The Continental Divide was held until 4:30 a.m. It was a very enjoyable and memorable experience. Special thanks to Mr. Smith, our class officers, and everyone who helped make this spe- cial night happen. Row 1: Jamie Strasser, Laura Lambert, Mike Chapes, Jill Amroze, Mike Malecki, Lisa Wilson, Brad Swanson. Row 2: Rick Mazurkiewicz, Kristy Woods, Mike Vick, Kelly Menger, Queen Charlie Karempelis, King Paul Hyde, Jean Lech, Jay Dybul. 4 Prom ' V UIOJJ 9 We've Got Tonight I know it's late I know you're weary I know your plans don't include me Still here we are Both of us lonely Longing for shelter From all that we see Why should we worry No one will care, girl. Look at the stars now So far away We've got tonight, who needs tomorrow We've got tonight, babe, why don't you stay. Prom 7 Spirit Week Spirit week began with New Wave Day, followed up by Grub Day. On Wednesday we took a trip to Hawaii. Dress-up Day proved that high school students really can abandon jeans for eight hours. Friday showed everyone has spirit by wearing the school colors, blue and gold. Pep Rally Friday afternoon our voices were heard far and wide. Everyone was very enthusiastic- especially the sophomores who won the spirit award. This was really the year for the male as Andy Wolf was named Mr. Irresistable 1984. The Homecoming Court was introduced and Mike Chapes and Michelle Evert were named King and Queen of Homecoming 1984. 9 Homecoming Parade Following the pep rally, floats appeared, people were smiling, clowns were let loose, and the band played as the line of artwork passed through the town of Muk- wonago. 10 Homecoming Parade Homecoming Game 11 Homecoming Dance The dance was the last of the Homecoming activities. Unfortunately the band did not show up, but that didn't dampen the fes- tivities. A good time was shared by all. Roffers Scnioi oO Seniors 64 Seniors Seniors To our friend, ROB MEACHAM from the Class of '85 PERHAPS LOVE Perhaps love is like a resting place A shelter from the storm. It is there to give you comfort It is there to keep you warm. And in those times of trouble When you are most alone, The memories of love will bring you home. Perhaps love is like a window Perhaps an open door. It invites you to come closer It wants to show you more. And even if you lose yourself And don't know what to do, The memories of love will see you through. Perhaps love is like the ocean Full of conflict, full of pain. Like a fire when it's cold outside And thunder when it rains. If I could live forever And all my dreams come true. My memories of love will be of you. Rob Meacham 67 SENIOR FAVORITES Song fc,....... Senior Favorites 69 AFS Carmen Nunez — Dominican Republic Carmen is a 17 year old from a small island located in the Carribean Sea, known as the Dominican Republic. She has two sisters and one brother; her father is a supervisor at a milk plant and her mother is a cashier at a nearby school. Carmen's future plan is to gain knowledge in Interior Designing. In America Carmen enjoys football games, parties, friends, sports and television. The biggest difference between teenagers in the Dominican Republic and the United States, according to Carmen, is that here we have more freedom to go out. Carmen states that she is very happy to have been able to stay in the U.S.A., and she would always remember this year all her life. Atsuko Ono — Japan Atsuko is our 1984-85 AFS student from Japan. Her future plans include working as an official of UNICEF. Atsuko's favorite pastime at home is listening to Mozart, making dolls and visiting historical buildings. Atsuko believes that school in America is much easier than in Japan. They only have 42 days of summer vacation. One thing she loves about America is that there is no school on Saturdays. She likes the friendly teachers at MHS but doesn't like having no windows in our building. Atsuko says Americans eat too many sweets. A goal of hers is to give love to poor children. 70 AFS Students iiifV v Shubangi Bhonsle — India Shubangi has come from India where the native language is Marathi. She has two brothers; her fa- ther is a consulting engineer and her mother is a managing director. Shubangi's future plan is to be an electrical engineer. Her favorite pastime is watching videos and shopping. Shubangi's hobbies include collecting jewelry, traveling, cooking and reading. The one thing she likes most about Amer- ica is the friendliness. Shubangi believes the biggest difference between teenagers here and in India is that teenagers in India are more well behaved, obe- dient and do not work outside the home. Dating is not common at all with teenagers in India. Christina Lindblom — Sweden Christina is 18 years old and comes from Sweden. Back home she has two brothers and one sister; her father is a Police Superintendent and her mother is a Nurse Assistant. Christina would like to continue her engineering education at col- lege. Her goal in life is to make a good career and to receive as much experience as possible. Her favorite pastime at home is taking walks in the forest, picking wildflowers and mushrooms. The biggest difference between teenagers here and in Sweden, according to Christina, is that a lot of teenagers here have partime jobs to make money for college. In Sweden, college is already paid for through taxes, so the only thing you have to do is decide what college you'd like to attend. The in- fluence of America in Sweden is immeasurable: Adidas, Nike, music and Dynasty are minor examples of the Swedish involvement with the United States lifestyle. AFS 71 JOERN BREUCKER Joern is from West Germany and is en- joying his stay in America. He thinks the people here are most friendly and help- ful and that the country is beautiful and spacious. He isn't too fond of our Wis- consin weather, however. Joern said there aren't so many after school activi- ties in European schools, and since a dri- ver's license can not be obtained until age 18, more students use bikes and small motocycles. His favorite hobbies and activities are sailing, soccer, skiing, squash, surfing, billiards, music and par- ties. In parting, Joern says, I would like to thank everybody for this year. It was a very nice experience for me, and I will never forget the time I spent here ' CLAUDIA HADDAD Claudia comes to us from Brazil and is adjusting to our harsh Wisconsin weath- er. She is enjoying her American family and likes the school life here. Claudia said that teens in America have a greater degree of freedom than they do in Brazil. She enjoys music and gymnastics. It was started way back in July when Karrie Schlitt and Cheri Sadler attended the yearbook workshop in LaCrosse. They brought back some good ideas and the page arrangement plan for this year's book. Staff members worked on their sections, often staying late after school and giving up study halls. They receive no academic credits or pay for their hard work. Their reward is knowing you have a school year memory book and that they were part of creating it. Special thanks to Tammy Rugg, who picked up the slack where needed and and performed many of the recording duties. Conrad Birdie (Jim Gonzales) had thousands of teenage girls running after him and thousands of teenage boys hated him. Thousands of American parents tried to ignore him. Mama (Pam Zielinski) does everything she can to come between Rosie (Sue Nikolic) and her son Albert (Frank Grahek). Bye, Bye, Birdie Bye, Bye, Birdie was chosen for the 1984 spring musical, and the cast had a lot of fun re-living the happy days of the 50's. Poodle skirts and saddle shoes were dug out of clos- ets, and everyone learned how to jitterbug. Bye, Bye, Birdie was about a rock roll singer named Conrad Birdie who was being drafted into the Army. Before induction, however, he would sing one last song and would give one last kiss to a teenager on the Ed Sullivan Show. There were 75 cast, crew and orchestra mem- bers involved with Bye, Bye, Birdie. Directors Diana Heagle and Charmaine Kuharske were very pleased with the results. Members of the military provided many fatigues, foot lockers, cots and other authentic gear used for props and set pieces. Area hospitals supplied surgical gowns, a gurney, IV bottles and more for the added touch of a Mobil Army Surgical Hospital. Three tent structures were built by the Stagecraft Classes, and regulations camouflage was placed over the roofs, making the MHS M A S H compound as real as can be. The men of the 4077th played cards to pass the time away between grueling sessions in surgery. Surgery was performed on the face of Walt Waldowski (Wally Hun- nicutt). MHS Bobsled Team Last year our four man bobsledding team, consisting of Tim Crawley, Rob Vick, Chris Cook, and Ernie Estes, had a very successful season. During the first annual M-Club meet, our team was favored to take first. All four of the men put their trust in a confi- dent Ernie Estes to steer the sled. The team would have done better if it hadn't been for Chris Cook, the an- chor man, who was giving it his all on the opening push when he slipped and fell. The team regained control, but then half way down the ice-coated track, the confident and cocky Ernie Estes took a wrong turn and they end- ed up in the concession stand. Despite these mishaps, coaches Bill Schmitz, Dave Durand, and Michael Furlong led the team to dominate the state meet, with an undisputed first place. Next year we are hoping to have a team to compete against. 134 Sophomores Sports 135 Pom Pons Row 1: M. Fillinger. Row 2: E. Johnson, B. Scarce, N. Edler. Row 3: D. Nuszbaum, L. Bonk, T. Stevens. After a lot of hard work fighting the school board for equal rights, the team was approved and formed. They wish to give thanks to Mrs. Vega, Mr. Asmann, Erika Langenbach and all the girls and parents who attended some of the board meetings. Coach Schmechel led the girls to two of four game victories. That was great con- sidering the terrible weather in spring '84, which meant less practice and fewer games. This year the team functioned as a varsi- ty club, but next year it will be a confer- ence sport with varsity and junior varsi- ty teams. All girls who are interested in soccer are encouraged to give it a try. Fancy footwork. Move that ball! Great smile, Michelle. Girls' Soccer 137 When Varsity's Hot, So Are J.V. And Frosh! It was a very good summer for the 1984 freshman baseball team. They finished with an 11 - 3 record. Every person on the team contributed to the fine season. Versatility marked this team as they prepared for varsity baseball. Many outstanding performances were given as Tim Komar and Nick Weinkauf were undefeated on the mound, and the bats were led by Rob Witon, Mark McKenna, Rick Rachwell, and others. There were many sparkling plays in the field by Jeff Williams, Bruce Net- tesheim, Brian Prochniak, John Gil- lard. This group really played as a TEAM. Baseball 145 Varsity Volleyball The Volleyball Team had another exciting and successful season. Early in the season they defeated Oak Creek, which was a ma- jor upset in the conference play, as was the victory over the conference champs at re- gional. The team played many tough matches that went into extended playing time. The conference match record was 5-7. The team won the South-Pulaski Division- al and also became Regional Champs. They started the season out strong with a five game winning streak and a fine second place finish at the New Berlin West JV Tournament. As some seasons will have their ups and downs, they semed to have peaked a little too soon and end- ed up with a tight game finish with some close and disappoint- ing losses. Regardless of the third place finish. Coach Ulrick- son was pleased with the perfor- mance and feels that the exper- iences and better understanding of offensive and defensive strat- egies will enable the team to hold its own next year in the Braveland Conference. With that in mind, cuts were made on the basis of attitude, committment and final- ly talent, and the initial step was definitely taken. With 15 A squad games and 10 reserve ( B ) games, the freshmen had the most games of any team. Enjoy- ing practice sessions at Section School for half of their season to alleviate crowded conditions at the high school, the boys im- proved rapidly and won their first 4 games. The Boys' Basketball Team fought to gain respectability in the tough Parkland East Conference. Finishing last in '83-'84, the Indians had five returning lettermen anxious to improve. They were Tim Hake, Jeff Powers, Brad Swanson, Jay Dybul, and Ken Fenske. These veterans, along with Mike Vick and Ed Nieskes, got most of the playing time for M.H.S. An early season eye injury to Hake was a setbak, but the team held its own during his six game absence and started to put it together by mid-January. This year's Indians proved to be one of Mukwonago's better offensive teams as they aver- aged sixty points per game. Jeff Powers was the team scoring and assist leader, and he was a Parkland East 1st team all-conference selection. He was also his team's MVP. Tim Hake was the team's rebound leader and team captain. Hake was all-conference honor- able mention. The team finished with an 8-9 conference record. 154 Boys' Basketball Heads or tails, win I love to shoot. lose. The 1984 football season was one of almosts and could have beens. The losing of seven sen- ior players took a costly toll on the inexperienced Indians. However, hard work, learning, and nev- er quitting were definitely positive points of the team and season. Their attitude toward football and hard work was one of great dedication. The Indians started the season poorly, but toward the middle of the season they began making tremen- dous strides. A Homecoming victory over Kettle Moraine was a great effort by everyone. Heart- breaking losses to Greendale, Muskego and Oak Creek followed. The last game of the season saw Mukwonago lose another heartbreaker to Brown Deer. With 25 seconds left in the game, Brown Deer scored on a 2 point conversion to defeat our Indians 15 to 14. The Mukwonago offense gets set. Although the season was indeed frustrating and perplexing at times, it was also a season of learn- ing. Everyone involved with this football team learned a lot about football: how it is played, how it is won, and how it is lost. There were no losers among those who played this season. To the sen- iors, we commend you or your effort, attitude, and never quit spirit. To the juniors, use this season as a building block for next year. 160 Varsity Football Dennis Herbst takes off on another long run.
