It is in the southern part of Brazil, and is a big city with seven thousand people. I speak Portuguese, as Brazil is the only country in South America where people don’t speak Spanish. I will go back to Brazil in July and will be able to get a very good job because now I know English and English is very important to get a very good job in Brazil. I want to go to the university. I am not sure, but I think I want to be a doctor. This year in America is a very good experience for me. I have learned a lot about the life in the U.S. I always wanted to visit America, and now I am happy. I have seen new things like snow, cold weather and new methods in school. I enjoy snow because than I can ice skate and ski and go snowmobiling. I am very happy to get a chance to to come to Wiscon- sin and meet lots of new friends. 22 Paula Tavares MAGGIE GICHO My name is Maggie Gicho. I am seventeen years of age. I come from Kenya, which is a country situated in Fast Africa. My home town, Mombasa, is the second largest town of Kenya with 135,000 people. I live right behind the Indian Ocean, which I miss a lot. My stay here has been very nice; I like the way the people have been helping me in different ways. The only thing that I have really wanted to see was snow, which I have, but it’s too cold for me and I can hardly wait to see the sunshine again. I love the freedom the kids in America have. When I return home I plan to take a hairdress- ing course which will last about six months. Maggie Gicho 23 MIA FERNSTROM My name is Mia. I'm the Swedish exchange student. Unlike Maggie and Paula, I’m not with the AFS. I’m an ASSE student. ASSE stands for American-Scandinavian Student Exchange. Though these two organiza- tions differ a little bit from one another, I guess I can say they are pretty much the same. Back in Sweden I live in a suburb of Stockholm with my parents (both teachers) and two sisters. When I go back this summer I have two years left of school. I’ve learned a lot of interesting things this year. It’s been a great experience. 24 Mia Fernstrom ■ Student Life 25 T-SHIRTS Student Life 27 YE OLDE ENGLISHE CHRISTMAS FEASTE Mixed Chorus This year the Choral Department's Christmas presentation was a bit different than in the past. Under the direction of Miss Kuharske, they presented a madrigal entitled, Ye Olde Eng- lishe Christmas Feaste. It was a Renaissance Christmas celebration featuring a juggler, a ma- gician, brass musicians, wandering minstrels, jesters, and trumpeters. Mukwonago High School Chamber Singers were dressed as lords and ladies, and the Mixed Chorus and Treble Choir sang songs of the Christmas season. A delicious dinner was prepared and served by the Co-op students under the supervision of Ms. Wallendal. the dinner consisted of fresh fruit, roasted pig, vegetables, bread loaves, and the traditional plum pudding. The night was en- joyed by everyone. Though the evening started a bit damp, it wasn't long before it crystallized into a beautiful evening. The Clausing Barn at Old World Wisconsin, handsomely decorated, supplied the proper atmosphere for the arriving couples. After dinner was served, everyone joined in dancing to the music of Our Town.’’ The couples also waited for the highlight of the night, the introduction of the 1980 Prom Court and the announcement of the King and Queen. The Master of Ceremonies, Jeff Dettinger, presented the 1980 King and Queen. The newly crowned Jeff Swan and Cathy Hardtke led all the couples in a dance to the theme song, Longer, by Dan Fogelberg. It included the usual cheering and yelling and the tradition- al playing of the MHS school song. The sophomores showed their spirit by winning the class yell. One of the highlights of the Pep Assembly was the introduction of the Varsity foot- ball team and other fall sports teams. At the assembly, the cooks were given a special award for their display of school spirit. The main feature of the program was the presentation of the 1980 Homecoming Court and the crowning of the King and Queen. This year's King and Queen were Corey Wright and Jessie Williams. The Pep Assembly did its job by getting the people in a spirited mood for the game. 42 Homecoming Despite ail their hard efforts, the Indians ended up with a disappointing 24-26 loss to the New Berlin West Vikings. Mukwonago had been trailing 26- until the middle of the fourth quarter, but a spirited comeback brought them just two points short of Homecoming victory'. Saturday noon proved to be exceedingly hot, but this didn't inhibit the band from performing their best as they marched throughout Disney World. Sunday was spent visiting the Ken- nedy Space Center and also Daytona Beach where the band members had a glorious time swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. On Monday the group returned to Disney World to give a concert at Lake Buena Vista, much against the student's wishes, they were persuaded to return to the buses and spend another full day traveling home. Thanks to Mr. Underberg and Mr. Viemeister.the band had an enjoyable trip they won't forget for a long time. THE SOUND OF MUSIC Last spring, a talented group of MHS students per- formed their rendition of the famous Rodgers and Ham- merstein musical, The Sound of Music. The air truly was filled with the sound of music as the actors and actresses, accompanied by members of our orchestra, sang their way into the hearts of the audience. The lead roles in MHS’s first musical were performed by Karl Bethke and Sandi Radtke. All who participated agreed the musical was an unforgettable experience. A letter of gratitude was received from Maria von Trapp, expressing thanks to MHS for performing her” story. Thanks to Miss Kuharske and Mr. Shively, MHS's first musical was a huge success. 48 Sound Of Music Row I: Marie Spore. Colleen Poole, Bluzette Stcmper. Katie Martin. Laura Hodge. April Nagel. Drama Club is a group of en- thusiastic young people who enjoy expressing themselves through the- atre. They put on four productions a year and participate in many oth- er functions, such as attending other productions in Milwaukee, Waukesha, and Chicago. Drama Club is open to any student who is interested in theatre. 01 vf7 • Oj The Treble Choir meets every day for a semester. Participants re- ceive one-half credit for satisfac- tory effort in the class. Many members elect to continue for the second semester. As in the mixed chorus, members may audition for Chamber Singers, and may partici- pate in the solo and ensemble con- test. They may also earn a letter. The choir began this year with a large number of girls who had nev- er sung before. Rarely, in my years of teaching, can I recall a group which has worked harder than this group. It has been a great source of satisfaction to watch them grow as singers and musicians. D R A M A C L U B A N D T R E B L E C H 0 1 R Clubs 51 c iCtaOPCn DZ w tn o Z w w w to g Row 1: Steve Theim. The group has performed not only at school functions, but also at the State Fair Park and community groups. Their main project was being host Lordes and Ladyes ’ for Ye Olde Englishe Christmasse Feaste . The Chamber Singers have had a very successful year, performing all music from pop to madrigals. Being extrememly dedicated musicians is a prerequisite for membership, and also helps the members to be versatile musicians. They have made my job very easy and enjoyable and are capable young musicians and wonderful people. The Mixed Chorus meets every day for a year. Participants receive one credit for satisfactory effort in the class. In addition to performing with the group for con- certs, members may also audition for Chamber Singers and or participate in a solo or small ensemble for contest. The group participated in the Parkland Area Choral Festival along with choral groups from New Berlin and Muskego. By par- ticipating at contest, concerts, and any extra rehearsals, the students may earn points that count toward a letter. dt From: Tod Hebein, Kirk LaDu, Dan Krcbsbach; Row 1; Doug Krcbsbach, Marty Mesa. During the past 1980-81 school year, the club has been limited in its activities and meeting times due to the many time and scheduling con- flicts encountered by the advi- sor. However, when the club does meet, the members par- ticipate in learning about the customs and culture of the German speaking people — something that no longer can take place in the non-existent German classroom with its many travel posters, maps, schnitzelbank, and other posters geared toward promotion of cultural understanding. As in past years, the German Club has participated in fund raising ac- tivities, and kept alive the dream of being able to travel to Euro- pean German-speaking coun- tries. Hopefully, with the sup- port of the public, teachers, and fellow students, this dream can become reality in 1982. f Cvi- Spanish Club is designed for students who enjoy the Spanish language and culture. Membership is not limited to only those stu- dents enrolled in a Spanish course. Learning about the Spanish and Mexican cultures has included in the past years: trips to the Holiday Folk Fair, Field trips for Spanish Club and Spanish classes to see Jose Greco and Jose Molina (Fla- menco, Dancing), and Spanish Club's annual spring dinner at a Milwaukee Mexican restaurant for a taste of authentic cuisine. There may be other social or cultural trips, depending upon club funds. Being a senior means looking back on four years of memories. The past four years have flown by more quickly than we thought possible. But the memories will last a lifetime. As freshman we entered high school and found it to be a new and exciting (but sometimes frightening) world. The Class of 81 became the last class at MHS to experience the 21 mod day, open concept system. One of the most vivid memories of our freshman year is of enduring the teasing from upperclassmen. But we hung in there, realizing that it couldn't last forever. Sophomore memories include struggling through Western Civ and Geometry. Of course the highlight of our sophomore year was getting that all important driver's license. Becoming a junior meant that our high school years were half over. It was time to begin making plans and decisions about life after high school. For many people, junior year brings back memories of Prom. Girls and guys dressed in formalwear attended the Prom at Old World Wisconsin for an unforgettable evening. Being seniors meant that we were finally upperclassmen. It also meant that our time in high school was drawing to a close. The realization brought mixed feelings. We would be leaving a place we had known for four years. We would be parting from friends, and promising to keep in touch. But it was time for all of us to go our separate ways and begin new lives. In our caps and gowns we began our march down the aisle. With the placement of the diplomas in our hands, we said good-bye to Mukwonago High School and looked forward to our futures. 70 Seniors Donna Anich Judith Anschutz Steve Armbruster Duncan Baker Charles Beranek Kurt Baumann Seniors 71 Troy Bjorklund Lisa Bluhm p 72 Seniors Amanda Buckett Chris Bumgarner Kelly Carmody Sheila Chapman James Chars Melissa Christianson Seniors 75 Dean Deback Christel Daniels John Crawley Jennifer Deering Brenda Dailey Sharon Davis Jeff Dertinger Seniors Elizabeth Drefahl Janine Dudenas Laura Dunda Eric Dunlop James Duszynski Robin Drewa Seniors 7S Mike Ford Bill Gedemer Magdalena Gicho 76 Seniors Wendy Gier Jeff Goetz Beverly Graham Colleen Gogin Patty Grady Daniel Gronemus Monte Gruel Geoff Gulla Dirk Gunderson Kevin Haag -ALTH Sherry Haase Deborah Hannon Catherine Hardtke Julie Hardtke William Hartenberger Karen Harvestine Timothy Hayne Lori Heil William Hein Karen Heinig David Hemm 'M Seniors Craig Henry David Herron Laurie Hibbard Brian Hill Terry Hokamp Paul Holterman Jim Hintz Renate Hoffman Darrell Hooker Daniel Hoy Todd Huebner Kelly Huth HO Seniors Seniors 81 Laurie Kowalicki Bryan Krzycki Chris Kubicck Scott Landers 82 Seniors ■ Lynn Manthey Debbie Markham Renee Marsolek LuAnn Mathson Seniors 83 James McPhetridge David Meier Jill Menger Clifford Md cCulIoch Mike McGraw Lori McKenzie . 84 Seniors Lory Nowatske Jackie Owen Tom Olsen Robert Orcholski Michael Pieper Larry Porter William Pestor Brian Pinterics Jeffrey Palmersheim Scott Polacek Jon Ponchik Colleen Poole Seniors 85 Andrew Prokop Glenn Pugh Kimberly Pulvermacher Tammy Prockniak Richard Rados Debra Rageth Carrie Rath Joseph Rauguth Donald Ready Lori Reinke Sue Richardson Kelly Riemann 86 Seniors Renee Ritter Susan Rohmann Charles Roamer Jay Rosenbecker Jane Roder Lynda Schlitt Joe Schmidt Brenda Rozek Seniors 87 James Schoolcraft Linda Schuster Susan Shepard Darren Schultz Lawrence Schultz William Schultz Lisa Schwallbach Nadine Shepard Patricia Shepherd Karen Shimkus Jeffrey Shouldice 88 Seniors Carol Sievert Sara Skrepenski Kendall Smith Molly Snyder Lisa Sparks Mark Speener Seniors H9 Margie Stanisch Debra Strebe Andrew Swayze Chris Steele Richard Stevens Wendy Stogbauer Sandra Sugden Tim Strum Paula Taveres Heidi Teuteberg Theresa Theim X) Seniors Dan Thompson Robert Tuler Margaret Utrie Ronald Vertz Heidi Volkmann Donna Wagner Laurie Wallace RaeAnn Webster Dennis Vandershaegen Jeffrey Wagner Wanda Weink . REMEMBER WHEN M E M 0 R 1 E S O F 104 Autographs SPORTS Departing from the Southern Lakes Conference and entering the Parkland Conference leaves me with mixed emotion. The relationship that Muk- wonago High School has had with the Southern Lakes Conference for the past twenty four years has been of the highest quality. We have had good, clean competition and exciting rivalries. The energy crunch and declining school populations in the Southern Lakes schools has been a factor in our departure from the Southern Lakes Conference. Mukwonago High School's involvement with the Parkland Conference offers shorter driving dis- tance on the average. It also involves competition on a regular basis with schools as large or larger than Mukwonago High School. It must be said that much is lost when a twenty four year relationship is dissolved. I am hopeful that Mukwonago's alignment with the Parkland Conference will prove equally rewarding during the coming years. Sports 105 TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT Varsity Track Row 1: Wendy Smith. Greg Peterson (880), Bill Ross (high jump). Bill McCarthy (440),Jim McPhetridge (330 hurdles), and Steve Cyra (100 and 200) all won individual titles. The team also won the Salem Invitational, the J.V.’s won the conference frosh- soph meet, and Cyra qualified for state in both spring events. They won their last three games to end up with a winning re- cord — seven victories against six de- feats. The season ended in spectacular fashion as they beat Waterford 18-6 in the season final. The most exciting triumph came in the previous game, however, as the junior Indians topped Burlington 10-9 in 12 innings. cWcJU J V. Top Row: Coach Enright. Dave Leon, Larry Edwards. Mukwonago’s season highlight was beating Greendale who had been undefeated for 2 i years. Mukwonago’s excellent season was the result of consistant playing by Steve Jones, Jeff Millies, and Joe Schmidt. Mukwonago placed third in sectionals and seventh in conference. The varsity team made a tremendous im- provement in the 1980 season. The change to the Parkland Conference resulted in play with- out conference competition since girls’ golf is not organized in the Parkland Conference. The girls played in Southern Lakes duals and several invitationals, and then went directly to regional play, placing 5th. The team hosted Mukwonago’s own Invita- tional at Rainbow Springs, and placed 5th on its own course. The varsity team was led by seniors Colleen Kelly and Janet Sperstad. Seniors Reinke, Por- ter, and Flury were good performers, but were nudged from constant varsity play toward the end of the season by sophomores Kris Koehler and Karen Kirshner, the two most promising golfers of 1981. The J.V. team practiced and participated at all events. All girls improved, so the 1981 team should aim at a higher place in regionals next year. Maggie Uribe set a unique course record. At the Parkland Conference Cham- pionships, the team finished 6th, defeating eight other schools — including defending champion New Berlin West — and losing to five. Steve Cyra, a senior, was the team s most valuable runner, while Bob Mueller and Larry Schultz, also seniors, joined him as captains. Freshman runner Rob Schmitter set several school records in his rookie season, and Mike Croy, a junior, had the year’s fastest three-mile time. The team won a trophy at Jefferson Invita- tional, and four letterwinners including Croy, Schmitter, and juniors Dave Arkin and Mike Atkins will return to lead the squad in 1981. After a slow start against East Troy, we came back and played well for a win against Pewaukee. Our first game on the road was a sobering exper- ience, losing to Greendale 29 to 0. The team won against Muskego and New Berlin West, but the rest of the season was down hill, losing sucessive games to Greenfield, Oak Creek, and Racine Case. This group learned a lot about themselves and about the game of football, and M.H.S. can expect good things about the game of football, and M.H.S. can expect good things from this group of young men. The freshman football season was truly an inspirational year for the players, coaches, and fans. We began the year with a tie against Greendale High School and finished the year with a tie against tough New Berlin Eisenhower. Beginning with a tie and ending with a tie may not sound like an inspirational year, but the success of this team was not measured by the win loss column. Our captains and real leaders for the season were Mike Dorband, Rob (Bubba) Belland, and Dave Williams. Special effort goes to Mike Dorband, Grant Poyorski, Dave Wil- liams, Mike Sadler and Keith Novotny for their fine consecutive performances. Football 121 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL This year in the tough Parkland Conference competition, our record, 13-15, showed many achievments. We defeated Green- dale, a top conference team, and were also the best competition for Oak Creek, a state caliber team. We played 6 out of 8 Saturdays during the season in tournaments just for improvement. Eventually it paid off; we took our own Invitational and the 1980 Regional Tournament. In Sectionals we were runner-up. This year the team was very young, with only two seniors, Donna Anich and Angie Kainz. We were more enthusiastic than experienced, for we again took 1st place in the Homecoming float competition. Our young team will prove to be very experienced next year and will have a goal to go to state. U) Row 1: (L to R I Coach Vehanen. Row 2: (L to R ) J. Nortunen, M. Allen, S. Chars. M. Ferstrom. VOLLEYBALL The J.V. volleyball team's first half of the season produced a losing re- cord but they came back to win 10 out of their last 12 games to finish with an overall winning season of 15-13. The team improved tremendously over the season and many of these players are going to be a valuable addition to the varsity next year. One thing is for sure, this group of extroverted players never produced a dull moment, whether it was in practice or a game. The awards went to Connie Markham for Most Valuable Player, Susy Jensen for Most Improved, Robin Dulka for Most Dedicated, and Robin Dulka and Connie Markham for captains. Coach Kossoris would like to com- pliment all the players on their efforts and improvement and wish them good luck next season. Row 1: (L to R) P. Mazurkiewicz, K. Woods. Row 2: (L to R) K. FRESHMEN VOLLEYBALL The 1980 Freshmen Volleyball Season proved to be both exciting and challeng- ing for the eighteen girls who made the team. The season started with the challenge to develop good volleyball skills, since most of the girls had very little previous experience at competitive volleyball. The girls worked hard and their efforts paid off as they ended the season with a 5-4 record. The team's most exciting moment took place at Racine Case where they battled the school's junior varsity team and won all three games. It was a frustrating year for the team because the match scores in many cases did not show how close the girls were to winning. Our record of 0-9 does not indicate how well or how close the matches were. We began the season with a home match against Kettle Mo- raine and lost all singles and doubles matches while winning only 15 games. In the final match however, we won one singles match and one doubles match and collected a total of 68 games in the win column. Sheryl Fickau had the only win for the varsity singles players, and the dou - bles teams of Diane Schenk-Barb Wrasman. and Colleen Low-Lori Me Carthy won matches for the varsity doubles team. There is a bright side to our first year in competition and it comes from the J.V. record of 4 wins and 5 losses. The record of our freshman doubles team of Sue Nickolic - Chris Greenwood was the best for the team at 4 wins and 1 loss. Varsity Row 1: (L to R) S. Fickau. D. Trcndcl, C. Low. E. Simon, B. Sanders. Although slumping to fifth in the conference tournament, the Indians showed excellent promise for the future in placing Craig Fleischmann and Dave Bolser third, and Dan Madden and Kevin Cullen First. All four wrestlers return next season. Tournament action this season also showed promise for the future. The Indian grapplers placed 4th at the Wisconsin Dells Team Tournament behind State ranked Mineral Point, Wisconsin Dells and Merrill. In other tournaments, first place honors went to Dan Madden at Waterford and Sun Prairie. The State Tournament series echoed the strength of our young team. Six returning wrestlers advanced to the Sectional at Hart- land. In the regional, Corey Wright placed 4th, Tim Mackesey and Dave Bolser 3rd, Craig Fleischmann 2nd, and placing 1st were Dan Madden, and for the second consecu- tive year, Kevin Cullen. JUNIOR VARSITY WRESTLING The Junior Varsity Wrestlers mirrored the Fine performance of the Varsity team with an 8-2 record during their first season in the Parkland Conference. Well-rounded perfor- mances also gave the JV Indians a 3rd place Finish at the West Allis Invitational, 2nd place at the frosh-soph Johnson Creek Tournament and 5th place at their own Mukwonago Tournament. Ten of the nineteen games played went overtime, or were won or lost by two points or less. Seven of the last nine games were of this type including a double overtime loss in tournament play. Janet Sperstad was chosen team cap- tain and also selected by her team mates as our M.V.P. Janet was also a first team All-Conference selection and Toni Kinlow was given an Honorable Mention. Lynn Peterson received our rebounding award, Sperstad the offensive award and Kinlow the defensive award. We won the close games early in the season as we jumped off to a 9-3 record, but lost the close ones later and finished the season 11-8. 128 Girls’ Basketball GIRLS’ SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL This season was respectable! The girls learned the joys of success and the pain of defeat. Many happy hours of work brought us close together and friendships began to effect our lives in a positive way! In each 32 minutes of a game, the girls made more difficult decisions and forceful movements than most people make in a life time. We all grew a little. Some more than others. It’s a lot like life. Ev- ery member of the team played with en- thusiasm and dedication and showed much improvement during the course of the season. Debbie Ciardo led the team in scoring with 93 points for the season while Kris Kinjerski had the most defensive steals with 52, a freshman record. In rebound- ing, Caryn Kramer led the way with a season total of 106, also a freshman girls record. The boys had a tough time adjusting to their first year in the Parkland Conference. Having no returning starters made the task even more difficult. Coach Swan had visions of a .500 season, but lost too many close games to make it a reality. The lowest point of the season was a seven game losing streak in January. But as the team gained experience, it also improved and finished the sea- son winning nine of the last conference games. The final record was 7-12. Outstanding victories which avenged earlier defeats were won over New Berlin West, Green- field and Oak Creek. Seniors Jeff Swan, Kurt Baumann, and Dave Williamson along with Juniors Dan Benson and Vince Cicero, became the starting line-up. Williamson and Swan were named Co-Captains. Jeff Swan was the M.V.P. Benson and Swan also received All-Conference Honorable Mention. Boys' Basketball 131 BOYS’ SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL The Sophomore basketball team finished with an 8-10 record. It was an exciting sea- son with many games close and decided in the last few seconds. Rodney Bodart was selected the M.V.P., setting two new re- cords, most rebounds a game and best free throw percentage. Craig Vertz was selected Most Improved Player. 6 1 6 Back Row: Coach Ralph Smedcma, Reid Bruescr, Barry Wanasek, Dan Bower, Rod Bodart, Middle Row: Tim Bchling, Brian Unke, Craig Vertz. The experiences we shared in our junior year will be memories in the years to come. Our time was divided between school, jobs, and social activities. We have memories of all the time we spent doing homework to prepare us for our senior year, and memories of the days spent working to save money for prom, cars, insurance and dates. We'll remember the bitter cold football games and going crazy at the basketball games. Ours are the memories of all the people we met and the friends we made. Toni Piscitello. Back; Brad Unkc, Darlene James. Freshman memories begin the first time you stepped through the doors of the high school. Some were good; some not so good. Like the First high school dance — the one where you kept stepping on your partner's feet all night. Or the homecoming game - - - while jumping up to yell, 84,'' you fell into the people in front of you, who just happened to be seniors. And with a look of disgust, they turned around and said, Freshmen! Memories of the tests and mid terms, and the mods of study hall, which never seemed to end, all remind us of our freshmen year. Those days that brought us sorrow, joy, sadness and cheer all bring memories of being a FRESHMAN. Freshmen 169 Acker. Paul Ackerman, Sherry Ahrens. Tanya Albrecht. Jim Alloy. Bonnie Amrozc.
