Mukwonago POPULATION 2367 ii nn Arrow ’78 Vol. VI Mukwonago High School Mukwonago, Wisconsin LA Prom 77 It all began with a whirlwind of special plans. The guys took on the brave task of working up the nerve to ask that special girl to be his date. Of course, he also had to come up with the transportation, plus money for tickets, a rented tuxedo, flowers, and dinner. The gals shopped for that “special” dress and accessories to complete the outfit. Would their teachers and parents really believe these usually blue-jeaned teens could look so elegant? And elegant they were! As the happy couples arrived at the Ramada Sands, they may or may not have been aware of the many hours of planning by the Prom Committee. Yes, it takes time to arrange for a place to dine and dance, reserve a band as good as Gregory James, select a Prom court, and attend to the many small details that make Prom a success. And a success it was! The evening is over, but the memories last forever! Utttt 1977 PROM COURT: Tracey Harker, Tad Williams, Debbie McGee, Neil Bethke, Christy Chrisman, Steve Radtke, Queen Cheryl Tatrow, King Bob Douglas, Kelly VanderMale, Nick Vega, Jodi Williams, Mark Lundin, Connie Grunewald, Kelly O'Connell Our fearless leader, Mrs. Rands, deserves a big “thank you for helping make Prom a success. Prom 7 Queen Cheryl shares roses with her court. Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me 8 Prom “Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day,” was a common phrase among the pa- rade watchers and game goers on the night of the 1977 Homecoming. But the preced- ing week was filled with spirit and enthusi- asm with participation and competition among classes. There was “Hobo Day,” “50’s Day,” “Hush Day,” “Jersey Day,” and “Color Day” to round out a week of fun and spirit. The day of the parade and game, a pep assembly was held to kick off the big night. The band played, cheerleaders screamed, and the classes competed to see who had the most spirit. The Homecoming Court was introduced and the king and queen were announced. The honors went to Kay Weier and Mark Porter. Despite the rain, much dedication was shown as crowds of people watched the parade under shelter. The Drama Club and the Senior Class won the prizes for the best floats. Even though the Indians saw a loss, it took alot of courage to keep playing in the pour- ing rain. Many people, old-timers and young-timers alike, agreed it was the best Homecoming ever because of the attitude and spirit of the school and crowd. Ladies in waiting. It’s really us! 10 Homecoming Aaaaaaaay Did our mothers really look like this? Gee, you're swell! The play was timely for The Halloween weekend. This was the department’s first ven- ture into serious drama, since in the past they have put on comedies. The entire cast and crew successfully met the challenge the play demanded. The lighting, sound, costumes, make-up and scenery construction created the perfect atmosphere for the production. The acting was high calibre, a real credit to the department, Mr. Heagle and MHS. M A S 18 Drama M A S H PLACE: Compound of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, Korea. The Indians starters all year were co- captains Mark Swan and Kelly O’Connell, Chris Jahn, Mark Rossetto, and leading scorer Bob Burke. Every player placed winning above personal achievement, and that’s what a champ is made of.” We can all be extremely proud and shall remember for a long time the 1977-78 Indian Basketball Team. 34 Boy’s Basketball Boy's Basketball 35 36 Boy’s Basketball Freshmen Boys Basketball: (Row 1) S. His enthusiasm and support radiates at pep rallies, at the games, and even from his column in The Chief. He has quite a history, from football during college days to coaching just about every boy’s sport there is. Amid numerous Southern Lake Championships, Sec- tional and Regional championships, he coached the boy’s track team to State in ’62 and captured the Cross Country State title in ’67. Mr. Dahle originated the “M” Club relays and has helped to initiate almost all of our girl’s sports. The DAHLE Award (Dedication, Attitude, Honesty, Loyalty, Effort), was formed in honor of his outstand- ing contribution to Mukwonago athletics. The award is given yearly to a deserving female athlete who must fulfill the above qualities. After many busy years teaching Science, Mr. Dahle became Athletic Direc- tor in 1970. Eight successful years have passed and we hate to see him go. To this loving and vivacious man we dedicate our yearbook. Thank you, Mr. Dahle, you’ve made us feel that “We Are The Champions.”! 54 Mr. Dahle Mr. Dahle 55 __J C LU Sophomores. Living Together - Growing Together Anyone who looks at the class of ’78 must realize we are different from oth- er classes. We are unique. Our class stands united, each person a part of another. We’ve lived together for four years — sharing hopes, exchanging dreams. As we look at each other, we can’t help but notice we’ve changed. As freshmen, our adolescent candle was lit. We were like small children, caught up in the tantalizing web of growing up through high school. Our sophomore year burned bright- ly. Together we struggled through western civ. and geometry, coming out on top with another call for challenge. As juniors, we worked faithfully to produce the best prom ever - one we could call exceptional. It will never be equaled. Now we are seniors. Our candle burns rapidly as graduation bears down upon us. Soon we will awake to that day when each one of us realizes we must go our separate ways, branch- ing out upon the tree of life. However, our candle will never be extinguished. It will burn just as brightly, deep in the heart of each senior, as we recall fond memories of yesteryears. $8 Seniors :niors Senior Class Officers: Sieve Radlkc. President; Nick Vega. We have reached our year of making memories with the traditional Junior Prom. It’s always a special time for many and will light our lives for many years to come. The so called barriers between the “Jocks,” “Burnouts,” “Motorheads,” etc, are vanishing from the class and leaving a sense of loyalty towards one another. As we have gained this class unity, we also have recognized each oth- er as individuals. We look forwa'rd to Senior year and graduation. Everyone looks forward to June when they are “let out” for the summer. Being a sophomore does have a good side, which is taking Driver’s Ed., but we can’t forget the more try- ing moments such as Western Civ, Bi- ology, and Supervised Study. With two years behind them, they’ve reached the half way mark to gradu- ation, which means they have two years to continue to prove they are the best class ever! Sophomores 113 FRESHMEN It isn’t easy to be the baby of the “family.” Sophomores tease you (after all, someone did that to them last year). Juniors smile tol- erantly at you. Seniors often ig- nore you completely, and teach- ers sigh and say “Freshmen!” How do you overcome such odds? The way all classes have overcome - by surviving the year and becoming a Sophomore. And just think, only one more year of supervised study! It was hard ad- justing to the modular schedule, but after a cycle, it was a snap! Checking out each others sched- ules to find out, who was free when and where to meet was hec- tic, but fun. But the Freshmen survived just like they will survive each year - with endurance! R e f 1 e c t • i o n s O f No, Mr. Hoagland, that was not an adverbial clause followed by a participial phrase. Faculty 131 YOU DRIVE US WILD WE’LL DRIVE YOU CRAZY Our high school wouldn’t be complete without our “crazy” drivers ed. dept. Students never tire of the humor and funny jokes of the D.E. teachers. But these gentlemen are very serious about teaching students how to drive well. They not only teach the skills of driving, but stress the responsibilities that go along with a drivers license such as no drinking while driving. They make U turn into a competent and defensive driver. A driver’s license? You’ve got to be kidding! 132 Faculty a e i o and u. A is for advanced study skills, e is for the great reading experience you get from taking speed reading and other reading courses from these two teachers, who willingly say, “I.O.U. all the help I can give you.” They help broaden student’s knowl- edge of the world through reading. Reading Teachers: L. Strom, S. Jensen Foreign Language Teachers: D. Simon, K. Trainor, S. Gowdy It’S A Small World After All Vas tust du? Muy bueno senor y senorita. If you didn’t take Ger- man or Spanish, these few words meant literally nothing to you. Our foreign language department will teach you the fundamentals of speaking and writing Spanish and German. Through the eyes of these three teachers, it is a “small world.” Faculty 133 Life Is Like That Let me see. Western Civilizations is a study of life back in the old west. U.S. History is a general look at the way life used to be. Minorities is the recipe we used for the melting pot. Right? The social studies department would certainly dis- agree with that statement, but they would set you straight on the main reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire, or the date of the first world war, and what the reasons were for the second world war. And they’ll even give you some in- sight into what it’s like to be a Mexican-Ameri- can in todays society. These and a variety of other interesting courses are offered by the MHS social studies department. Mr. Johnson. Is he smiling because he’s going to class, or because it is over? Standing: D. Ms. Peters, Mrs. Ascher, Mrs. Clark, and Mrs. Wallendahl have some great recipes. For those of you who have the special touch, you can put your talents to work at the sewing machine or interior decorating class. Then there are those who need a lesson in how to shop conservatively; the Con- sumer Ed. Course will help you here. These teachers help prepare us for the day when we’ll be on our own. Mrs. R. If you’re into biology, you’ll find out what an amoeba is, and the different parts of a tomatoe cell. In our MHS Science depart- ment, you see and learn things you’ve never even dreamed of be- fore. “If I meet you in the cornfield, will you kiss me behind the ears?” M. Kraus, V. Archer, R. Faculty 137 If You Need A Friend The special services department offered students an individualized study help program in any subject area. This year MHS had three social workers, each helping in their own special way. Ms. Manson served as area psycholgist, Mrs. Glasenapp as drug counselor, and Mr. Koch as social worker. L. Brown, F. Keeler, D. Steiner S. Manson, S. Glasenapp, M. Koch 138 Faculty “Jumping Jacks” performed by H. Nordentoft, C. Zitzner, J. Swan, W. Vehanen, K. In addition to learning such sports as basketball, volleyball, and baseball, students can even learn to square dance. Many choices are offered by the department, such as archery, badminton, handball, jogging, and self-defense. Mr. Swam and Miss Bartoszek also teach health classes to freshmen, so they grow up big and strong. Yes, these teachers are always “on the ball,” they “run” a great system, and they “throw” many choices to the students. K. Bartoszek Faculty 139 A Million To One The Math Department is very impor- tant to students, whether they are pre- paring for college, technical school, or learning how to balance their own checkbooks. Mr. Sidie looks surprised to collect that homework. 140 Faculty We’re Takin’ Care Of Business The Business Department offers courses which are very useful, whether it be for future job train- ing or for personal use. Learn how to keep track of finances with a bookkeeping course; learn how to type, take shorthand, or work an office machine. These practical skills give our students a better chance to compete in the big world outside of school. C. Bronson, E. Mulholland, G. Johnson, G. Gowdy Mrs. Rands looks pleased with the results of that paper! Faculty 141 On Broadway The Speech and Drama Department at MHS has something special that makes it such a success. That “special something” is Mr. Heagle. Putting on two or three plays a year and training students for public speaking is no easy task, but our man meets those demands like the pro he is. If A Picture Paints A Thousand Words . . . A. Heagle relaxes on the set of “Frankenstein’ As evidenced by the art showcase on the first floor at MHS, these teachers bring out the best in our stu- dents. Drawing, painting, and clay are a few of the many things a student can learn here. Besides, where else can you get your hands all “goopy” without your mother scolding you? Now, this line right here . . .” suggests Mr. R. Rosenbeckcr to Mrs. H. Ohm. 142 Faculty The Handymen: R. Will, J. Nelson, T. Vassel, J. Warren, R. Wastian, R. Smedema, C. His job includes supervision of aides, the library, and the audio-visual department. Mr. W. Herrmann, as Director of Vocational Ed., has many things to keep track of. His job involves federal funding programs, student work programs, coordinating career activities for the district, and acting as safety director. Mr. J. Dahle is our fearless athletic director. He organizes sports events, works with other confer- ence directors, makes speeches at pep assemblies, writes for the chief, and even sells candy bars for the M Club. He also did alot of work getting the new athletic complex underway, a project our dis- trict is proud of. Mr. W. Herrmann, Director of Vocaltion Ed. The members strive for new ideas and differ- ent ways or arranging to make the annual something special; and that’s very important to the staff because these are cherished memories for years to come. The effort and long hours are always rewarding in the end! Your Smiling Face Photography Club: The Photography Club is responsi- ble for taking so many of those great pictures that make our annual so special. You will always find them where the action is, ready to take some incriminating shots. So, when you least expect it ... expect it! Mr. Mainella (advisor), Jeff Krumrei, Vicki Donovan, Vic Gulla Clubs 157 Using The Power Student Government: Student Government has spon- sored many activities this year. A few events were dress up day, and the usual gold and blue day. They were active during the homecom- ing week, as usual, which made it more fun. For the Thanksgiving week, they sponsored a food drive for the needy. The student body must give them credit for giving of their time to improve the school, and for representing the classes. Keep up the good work! Second Hand News Pow Wow: Do “Bus line hazardous,” “Alas poor Yorick,” and “New Stadium gets good review,” sound familiar? They should, because they were some of the great articles that the Pow Wow put out this year. The dedicated members work hard to present us with an interesting and informative school paper. The Pow Wow is put out every month, and enjoyed by both the student body and the staff. We are lucky to have such good reporters. What’s the lat- est gossip? (Row 1) G. It helps develop inter- est and skill in desired areas. This experience comes in handy in the years to come. Each year students compete in the State Skill Olympics Con- test in their areas of interest. Slip Slidirf Away As always, this years ski club attracted a large number of members. Each year, the club goes through many downfalls, (or should we say fall downs). They must tackle the forces of mother nature, and the fear of looking down Bunnyhill. Unlike last year, there is plenty of snow, and it comes with bitter cold. They freeze to their skies and return as Human popsicles. But all in all, it is a terrific club because they have lots of fun in the process. Ski Club (Alphabetical Order): S. Agne, M. Aubert, D. Barber, T. Bergsma, Y. Bjorkland, G. Butler, B. Clubs 177 AFS One of the AFS Students this year is Rika Usser. Her Dutch name is Rinkje. She’s from Holland, where at- tending school is a lot different from Mukwonago. Her school in Holland had open campus, and a nine-hour day. The school board and teachers decide the classes to offer andjstudents have the same classes the whole year. Rika plans to go to college next year in the Netherlands, which will take her three years. She may come back to the states and at- tend college for a year when she’s done in the Netherlands. 178 Rika Usser Students Mark Aubert is the other AFS Student this year. He’s from Peru, which is in the west part of South America. The school system here is a lot different for Mark to adjust to also. In Peru, he’s accustomed to wearing a uniform, having a short hair cut, attending school with only males, and not having near as much free time. Mark likes our system better be- cause the students are free, inde- pendent, and can study when they wish to. In Peru he had to study the whole day. Mark believes that having free time will help the sutdents be bet- ter prepared for their future. Mark Aubert 179 Special Recognition Rappin’ time. The Arrow Staff would like to give special recognition to a special person for a particularly special reason. The person is Mr. Anson Heagle. This man gives time and effort to his work and to his students far above the so-called “call of duty.” The special reason is not just for what he does, but how he does it. He cares! And he shows it! We on the yearbook staff agree with Mr. Heagle’s work to promote an attitude of self-respect, unity, and interest in ourselves and our school. We know the entire school joins us in saying, “Thanks, Mr. Heagle. We’re glad you’re here at MHS.” Mr. Heagle and his favorite sidekick, Diana Heagle. Mr. Heagle promotes enthusiasm at the Homecoming pep rally. 180 Mr. Heagle Our Thanks To . . . Mr. Mainella and his photographers, Jeff Krumrei, Vic Gulla, and Vicki Donovan, deserve a special thank you from the annual staff. Even though we “Bugged” them for pictures, they never lost their patience and always came through with what we needed to complete this yearbook. Ken Whittemore, the representative from Jostens American Yearbook Company, has been a tremendous help to the Arrow Staff. He was there to organize, teach, sometimes prod (those deadlines!), and give us encouragement when needed. Thanks, Mr. Whittemore! 181 Seniors With Honors.
