As ve look at each other, and at ourselves, there's no way to run from the fact we've changed. We no longer work as a single unit, but together, as a team! The Class of '76 is a different, much more unique class than any other. Other classes have graduated and are happy to fall into the history of MHS. The '76 Class is a class of spirit and won't be kept down; it will be long remembered by everyone. This years' Seniors are the first class to manage through all four years in this school. As Freshman, they struggled as everyone else did to get acquainted with the new system; as Sophomores, they worried about Western Civ. assignments; Junior year, they sur- vived through College Skills and English Lit.; and as Seniors, mature, and sophisticated, the biggest problem they had to cope with was—staying in school. Faced to face with the future, the Senior must decide about college, and work, and the bleak reality of see- ing his classmates go their own separate ways. The Spirit of '76 lives within all Seniors. As each Senior grows older, he'll remember his high school days and that ol' Spirit of '76 will rise again within him. And only a Senior of MHS that graduated in 1976 will understand that feeling. 47 Scott Briesath Jeff Brinkman Wade Brueser Jay Burrow Cathy Chronis Pat Cassidy Trish Conroy Trina Congdon Kevin Crusan Julie Dalberg Paul Delosh Sandra Denio David Dennett Kath Derubeis James Wm. L.R.: Lisa Uribe 60 Special Honors Quotes From The Top Ten Maintainence of a superior grade point average over four years is usually considered to be no mean achievement. Some of the M.H.S. top ten students had these reactions about National Honor Society and their placements. It's a great honor to be on the top ten, and I hope I can continue with this kind of success in college. (Brian Lang) The secret of getting into the top ten is to take all the Mickey Mouse courses. Don't take any classes to further your educa- tion, just take classes which will assure you of enough credits. (Nina Rados) The whole idea of the top ten is a farce. Those few who want an education and who are the real students take classes which are a challenge and get grades which rank them in the top twenty. But those who see loop holes in the system take advantage of the choice of classes and take easy courses. (Doak Baker) It's a great feeling to have four years of your life (grades) brought down to the 7th decimal point! (Jim Lindell) N.H.S. shows the hard work I put forth through the past years and also makes my parents very proud. (Cheri Lepak) During the first three years I never even thought about the top ten, but I still worked to get good grades. Then I found out I was 12, hit the books harder, and by a stroke of luck— made it! (Kris Humcke) Being in the top ten makes me feel really good. It's a nice reward for four years of hard work. The first major obstacle for our class to overcome was Freshman study hall. This institu- tion, based on the theory that Freshmen who study together flunk together, did have one positive effect on our class; we learned to use team effort in our attempts to drive the supervisor crazy. For most of us, the sophomore year was dominated by classes rather than free time. But some of the classes weren't so bad, and a few students enjoyed certain courses so much that they're taking them again this year. (All in all, Juniors had another good year. That's easy to say when it's over). U.l. - Rick Adler sitting in the S.R.C. I could say they were lost, forlorn, little waifs...but I shouldn't lie. They learned their way around high school pretty fast. Another unlucky class to get mandatory supervised study, they all manage to survive while acquir- ing their new study habits . In other words, they're learning how to look occupied. The hardest thing for Freshman to adjust to is their lowered status. They have lost their rule over the Junior High and have become just another Freshmen class. But this year's Freshmen have a dream...yes, there will come a time when they'll be able to yell loud enough to get the tomahawk...when they'll be able to do unto others as they have been done unto themselves...when they'll have all the privileges of up- perclassmen...Too bad their dream won't come true until they're seniors. Class time is informal and lively. Students work together, sharing ideas and techniques. They learn and have fun at the same time. Pan- tomimes are a regular in acting class. Mock debates are held fre- quently in debate class. (Mr. Heagle loves to demonstrate his crafty powers of persuasion!) The drama department offers many courses, all to help you do your own thing. Take Two Expand your horizons through the foreign language departments. Mr. Trainor holds your ticket to Germany. Mrs. Simons and Mrs. Gowdy hold your ticket to Spain. Discover new lands. Study their history, people, and cultures. Decipher foreign literature. A whole new world is open to you! Driver's Ed. is an unique department, composed of two very unique teachers. Mr. Last and Mr. Ackerman love to joke around. (They sure did a great job of that in this picture!) Each enjoys making class time fun and interesting. Both want students to get the back- ground needed to make safe driv- ing decisions. They know that driv- ing is a serious matter. One takes in his hands not only the wheel, but also the lives of others. 103 SHAKESPEARE MAKES FISHING RODS, RIGHT? English is always an expres- sion of your individuality. Anything you say or write tells something about yourself. Your words create a mirror. If left dull, they won't give others a clear pic- ture. If polished, they will emit a sharp image of your true identity. The English teachers give instruc- tions on buffing up these mirrors. Your four years of high school pass quickly. Soon you will enter the real world. Set it aglow with the luster of your personality. 104 105 The teachers-Ascher, Peters, Clark-will keep you on your toes. IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE HEAT... 106 IF I HAD A HAMMER 0 107 ONE AND ONE AND ONE IS THREE Our Math Department can satisfy any individual's needs. It offers courses for the college-bound stu- dent. It teaches skills needed in technical fields. It even applies math to consumer economics. This year it gives students a choice of fourteen great courses, taught by seven great teachers! NOW, ON A DIFFERENT NOTE... 109 KINETIC ENERGY J Vi One of the departments which satisfies a great variety of interests is the Science Department. A few of the courses the department con- tains are Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Science Survey. Those just give you an idea of how many there are to choose from. Most of the advanced courses are, more or less, individual study. They allow you to work at your own speed and are mainly preparation for college. Advanced Biology involves a com- plete study of the systems of the human body, while Physics is a systematic study of the way things move. Science Survey includes facts about weather, genetics, and a special investigation about the variations in the students themselves. Biology students study plants, cells, each other; dissection, and finally, the human body ... If you're interested in science you know where to go. Ill Since we will be celebrating the Bicentennial soon, the History Department is the place to find out more about our origins. The U.S. History classes participated in a Bi- centennial program. The classes were presented with one of ten major principles of American Democracy every month. Several of these principles involve the dis- cussion of technical devices and education as basics of a strong country. The rest of the history courses involved the preceeding events leading to the building of our country and the world around us today. Emerging Nations and Western Civ. are based on the development and evolution of all people and places. Economics and Consumer Education inform us about our financial situations and United States minorities covers the origins and situations of our “melting pot . All in all, the History Department is playing a big role in our celebration. BACK WHEN 112 MY HAIR WAS SHORT 113 IF A PICTURE PAINTS A THOUSAND WORDS_____ Display uniqueness with art. Some people don't even know that it lends cameras and tape recorders to students working on class pro- jects. Few are aware of the many things it does. It's time to learn! To begin with, the A.V. dept, experiments with equipment. Last year, they modified walkie talkies to operate a slide projector; then they took this idea to the state A.V. meeting. They also design new parts for their machines. Department motto: Any thing can be done; it's just a matter of figuring out how to do it. 114 The Business Department offers fifteen courses, taught by a staff of five. The courses span a range from vocational to those which are offered for personal benefit. The areas of largest enrollment are Office Machines, Typing and Secretarial training. The Depart- ment maintains that after two years in their accounting program, students can get jobs keeping books. Marketing and Sales deals with individual interests in adver- tising and selling. Recordkeeping teaches skills with check writing and keeping household books. The second semester replace- ment for Sally Knurr is Carol Bron- son. BUSINESS BEFORE PLEASURE PEOPLE NEED PEOPLE If you're in doubt of what very busy people look like while they're in action, take a trip to the guidance offices. Three staff members in this position are Mrs. Faucett, Mrs. Buchanan, and Mr. Brown. These people work hard to straighten schedules out, arrange test dates, registration papers for juniors and seniors, and aid students in their problems. We're all thankful to this staff for helping us in all these situations. 116 HELP! The library isn't just for bookworms. Don't be scared away by the awesome bookshelves and indifferent No Talking signs. The library has much to offer for any in- dividual's taste; whether sports or politics, science-fiction or drama, mechanics or cooking . . . This year the library has about 12,000 books, and subscribes to 120 magazines. You name it, the library's got it! Rose Plolz Kate Burrows Mrs. Plotz and Mrs. Burrows keep their office in ship-shape con- dition. They're ready to help any sick or injured crewman. In no time at all he'll be back on his feet, ready for action. 117 THE MOVERS Miss Vehanen, Miss Zitzner, Mr. Nordentoft, and Mr. Swan work in the Gym Department. Their Freshman and Sophomore classes work on required class units such as basketball, football, square dancing, and gymnastics. Their junior and senior classes take cer- tain required units and also choose from such elective units as ping pong, bowling, slimnastics, bad- minton, and basketball. The gym teachers succeed in making their gym classes both interesting and fun. A second semester addition is Kathy Bartosek, who will teach health. 118 SECRETARIES AND AIDES Our secretaries are busy every second of the day. They have records to file, phones to answer, papers to type, letters to mail. . . . What a hectic pace! The resource aides are all- around individuals. They do a lit- tle bit of everything. Their duties include supervising students, keep- ing resource areas orderly, check- ing out books, answering telephones . . . 119 GIVE ME THE CAMPBELL LIFE! Our schools are a race of superhumans who prepare mounds of food, sell 20 dozen rolls plus milk and cereal, serve hot lunches to 185 ravenous students, greet 950 voracious people in the a la carte line, and then clean up after it all, each day, 5 days a week, 180 days a year. . . Yet these same cooks, Elizabeth Schmidt (head cook), Delores Szalewski (ass't), LaVonne Pine, Margaret Stobber, and Kay Slaski, manage to smile through it all. The custodians, Don Kneser, Duane Teske, Connie Smith, Bob Burke, Harold Domnie, Ken Jacob- son, Emil Szalewski, and Bob Geif, are concerned with almost every aspect of upkeep of our school building, including faulty ther- mostats, broken furniture and the kind of mess a student can manage to make while the teacher's back is turned. These people, the cooks and custodians, deserve our sincere thanks for keepin' on, keepin' on. Our Janitors, have a white thumb for getting things clean. Can you imagine the mess we'd be in without them? SPECIAL PROGRAM INSTRUCTION Mr. Herrmann is one of the busiest people around. He participates in many programs and holds various positions, some of which are: a safety director, a vocational director for noncollege bound students, and a youth employ- ment coordinator. Many thanks go to him from the entire community for jobs well done! This is a fantastic year for the Special Education class! They've toured the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. They've journeyed to our state capital. They even plan to visit the John Hancock building. Exploring the wonders of Wisconsin is a lot of fun for them. It's also a great way to celebrate our Bicentennial year. 121 ADMINISTRATIVE TEAMS The District administrative team is headed by Gordon Kniskern, Superintendent. Although the team finished fourth out of six schools at the sectional and did not qualify for State play, they did finish among the top six- teen schools in the entire state. 127 SPRINTERS TAKE THE LEAD The boy's track team really got it together this year. They were a well-balanced team with many par- ticipants. Although the team didn't reach their ultimate goal, to be the conference champs, they did win all of their dual meets, and took the conference relay championship. The captain was Bruce Danielson. The Most Valuable Player was Jeff Maxfield. The out- standing seniors were Steve Lewan- dowski, Rick Schadewald, Tom Knurr, Dave Karlinsky, Bob Eccker, Ronald Kelly, Bob Brinkman, George Hassi, Pete Thompson and Kris Sperstad. The captains, Ann Hood and Susie Schnitzler, both seniors, were previous letter winners. The varsity squad had such a good team that they qualified eleven girls and eight positions to sectionals. The year was an overall success. The team lost one conference game to Wilmot, and placed second in con- ference to Waterford out of twelve schools. Papinau, B. Douglas, S. Chapman, E. Gohde, J. Loker, S. Stewart. The 1975 football season was successful in terms of wins and losses. The team, coached by Don Enright, ended the season with a win-loss record of 6-3, and tied with Salem for second place in the Eastern Division of the Southern Lakes Conference. The Indians lost their last game to Burlington, and in the process, lost the chance to play in the Divisional Championship against Big Foot. The week previous to the Burlington game, Mukwonago had beaten Elkhorn, the one team that had defeated Burlington the entire season. Unfortunately, the victory had a price. The Indians lost the services of Hagen Streckel, a talented running back. This, com- bined with the losses of Basil Stewart and Bob Anich (during the Delavan game) and the loss of Dave Rakowski (during the East Troy game) left the Indians four starters short going into the Burlington game. A double overtime loss to Salem in the second game of the season could have demoralized the Indians, but they showed great character and determination by following this loss with four con- secutive victories. Again after the disappointing Homecoming loss to Wilmot, the Indians fought back to gain a shot at the Eastern Division Championship. 137 138 TOP- Mukwonago defense. CENTER-LEFT- Goal line defense. Each year the turnout increases and the techni- ques of the girls is more advanced. The coach wishes all girls could make the team. The strategy of the game was bump, set, spike, but it did not always turn out that way. Whatever the strategy the girls had in mind must have worked, because they obtained a third in conference, with a 14-7 win-loss record, and won their own regionals, and finished strong third in sectionals. This was a vast im- provement upon last year's squad. Next year we look forward to another strong squad with four returning varsity members and a strong junior varsity team to pick from. The captains Mary Ellis and Jennifer Kainz, both previous letter winners in the sport, were the reason for the team's spirit. The Junior Varsity completed the season with a 18-12 game record. The coach Miss Wendy Vehanen has coached the team ever since it has been established, but this is the first season it has gone so far. Maybe it is because of the ambition in the girls or because Miss V. has learned how to obtain the best results with eager female athletes. DO THE HUSTLE Candid I.D. LEFT-M. Ellis and J. Kainz OPP. And with such a young team the upcoming years should also be very successful. The team had two all- arounds , senior Lois Genzmer and freshman, Julie Kummer. Two freshmen, Mary Fluery and Lei Ann Talaska, have the ability to become all-around gymnasts next year. With Mary Brown, Colleen Wojtasiak, and Julie Fisher com- peting on the floor, Benita and Cheri Fitzgerald on both the vault and unevens, Connie Grunewald and Dayle Falvey on the unevens, and Kathy Hill and Lei Ann Talaska on the beam; we had depth at every level. Next season the girls will be expected to compete with optional routines which will encourage creativity and variety in their routines. GYMNAST ICS-(left-right) ROW 1-M. Brown, S. Kazmierski, L. In the conference meet the Varsity placed third as a whole, while J.V. placed second. The team captain was senior Brad Rauguth and most Valuable player was John Rageth. The team's over-all season record was 9-2, with losses to Burlington and Whitewater. The squad had many seasoned veterans back, but also many new and inexperienced people. The team will lose five of its twelve varsity squad. Members graduating are Cam White, Larry Armstrong, Dale Bopp, Hagen Streckel, and Pat Kroll. The squad won the conference tournament and shared the over-all title with Whitewater until the coin flip, when MHS won. I he team has not won con- ference since 1969. Six members went to regionals, four to sectionals, and two to state. Here there was another first since this is the greatest number since 1969. In 1969 three people went to state, and now we have two, Shawn White at 98 and Cam White at 119. The team placed second in sectionals out of 48 schools. This is the best finish in the history of wrestling at this school. This year several school records were broken, among them: Cam White broke the most wins with 79 as of our deadline, and 62 conference championships. Mark Swenson broke the most wins in the heavyweight (lass with 19-6. Individual conference cham- pionships went to Shawn White. The j.V. squad finished its second year in a row as conference champs with only one loss. It was a great season. 144 OPP. PG.-UPPER RIGHT-Varsity-(left-right) ROW 1-L. Davis, A. Maxfield, L. After losing their first conference game to Salem, the In- dians came back to win the next eight games before losing to Badger. The biggest disappoint- ment came with a loss to last place Wilmot with only two games left. The Indians won against Delavan to leave the Conference title decision up to the Burlington game. Much of the credit goes to Kelly Porter, editor, and Mrs. Roeber, advisor, who never seem to rest or let any other staff member rest if they see them slack- ing off. The annual room is, of course, especially busy around the times for deadlines. This year the staff has been making a special Bicentennial edi- tion, centering on individuality. This is the most expensive book ever put out. It has more color and pages than ever before. It will be entered in Nationwide Competi- tion. This year the team will travel to at least three invitational meets, followed by subdistrict, district, and hopefully state. They're sure to have a successful season! This year Debate Club lost its seasoned debators. All the present members are greenhorns. But they caught on fast and are now doing a good job. (Their 10-8 record proves that.) The proud group has taken home a first place trophy from the Oak Creek meet. In January, they will attend Conference at Burlington and Whitewater. Drama Club has had a busy year. They had a dance, a bake sale, and two taffy apple sales. All were a big success. Proceeds go toward a trip to New York in the spring. It hopes to give each member $100.00 toward the trip. They hope to see Broadway shows. At Christmastime they performed four skits for the Prairie View and Clarendon Avenue schools. Twenty-five cents a week is charged for dues. They go toward a separate fund for seeing plays and such. This year MATCHMAKER by Thornton Wilder, and BERNADINE, by Mary Chase, were put on. 1975-76 club officers are: President, Dana Teske, Vice Kathy DeRubeis, Treasurer, Connie Grunewald, and Secretary, Karla Vega. 163 ANYONE FOR THE FOREIGN LEGION? This year's Spanish Club had their annual popcorn sale. They plan on using the money to go to a Spanish restaurant in Milwaukee. Then they can get a taste of the culture they've been studying. German Club may be discreet in its activities, but it has really ac- complished a lot. The club has had a candy sale, a convention in Racine, and a banquet. The club plans to take a trip to Germany in March of 1977. Depending on the money situation, they all want to go. If there is not enough money, only the members who contributed the most will go. This request is kept in mind at meetings of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The group gets together at least twice a month to discuss the problems facing them as Christians in everyday life, as well as in athletics. This year, as usual it began with girls' golf and volleyball and boys' cross country and football. At the end of the season, the M-Club held a fall potluck banquet to award players in those sports. For football Jim Naber received the Hip Keller award for being the most outstan- ding senior end; Don Helfenstein, the most improved senior award; Bob Heinemann, the Spirit award; and Dave Kern, the most improved junior award. Many letters were given out to those on the other teams and congratulations were given to the girls' golf champs, boys' cross country and girls' volleyball team for outstanding seasons. Mr. Dahle will be looking for success in the rest of the school year, along with support from the rest of the school. Gail, Lori, Pat and Jan Call the meetings early, And get right down to business with Marge Peterson and Shirley. They had a potluck dinner Before the football bash , And don't forget the skit, for Of course, it was a smash. They had two games for parents, Both of which were played in fall. One was for the pigskin, the other - basketball. So if you've got some spirit With ideas to suggest, Go join the Sporty 40 , And be among the best. FUTURE BOOSTERS (OPP. PG. CENT.) V. It all began last fall with their performance at the Wisconsin State Music Teacher's Convention. Many rehearsals went into their taped audition which was singled out from among those of our state's best choral groups. Mr. Chapman is pleased with the dedication and talent of the M.H.S. Choral Singers. Mixed Chorus and Girls' Glee Mixed Chorus and Girls' Glee have had a busy schedule. Both attended an opera movie, The Magic Flute. Each took part in the annual Christmas Concert, in which all songs featured were written by American composers. The Spirit of '76' has moved these two groups into action. 181 MEMORIAM ALICE KNURR October 28, 1917 - December 3, 1975 Sally Knurr, age 58, died after a short illness. She is remembered by the faculty and student body with affection and respect. Sally taught business courses in Mukwonago High School for over twenty years. She brought vocational experience, and a Masters Degree in Business Education to her students. For many years she served as depart- ment chairman and was a past ad- visor to the National Honor Society. She cooperated with UW- Whitewater and spent countless hours in the training of student teachers. Many of her methods were considered innovations. The students considered Sally to be firm but fair and first rate . She knew her stuff. Her Business Department says she had an ex- cellent reputation among businesses which hired Mukwonago graduates; many were employed immediately after graduation. She spent hours at home on preparation of materials and revision of curriculum. Her death was a great loss to the teaching profession. A scholarship fund has been established to a business graduate to further business training. Over $1000 has been donated. This will be an ongoing memorial ip her honor. 182 IN MEMORY OF . . . All of the excellent photography is due to Mr. Mainella's cooperation and per- sistance. Mrs. Roeber gets the patience trophy of the year. Through the good and the bad times Mrs. Roeber was there, en- couraging us, or rather, forcing us on.
