Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1972 volume:

Hail to thee, Mukwonago Hail to the Gold and Blue Faithful we shall always be To our high school, fair and true Your standards are a guiding light Wherever we may go So drink a toast, a hearty toast To old Mukwonago. This book has a meaning a very special and nostalgic meaning. Nineteen seven- ty-two marks the end of the small, unpretentious building at 930 North Rochester Street as a high school. Never again in this building will Mukwonago freshmen be initiated into high school life with dunkings in water bubblers”; or sophomores dread the day term papers are due; or juniors hang miles of crepe paper at two in the morning for their prom; or seniors realize that this is the end of a safe, but slightly tedious wa This bool] -whool .«frKUi.- Sr J But along with that nostalgia, and a building now past, there is a spark of life — a beginning. A beginning for those who come after in a new building, a new setting. But this yearbook is for those of us of nineteen seventy-two. m ■ .i Ircslin.in hujh scliJHH Ufe is WBWffhg I'... for years. Many complaints heardlifioui thThigh school, but what isn’t heard are the sighs when the senior goes to his lasLilomecoming Dance or the junior sees his prom. ■ A crisp and sunny morning. Looking like a mother duck with her ducklings out for a morning stroll, the teacher leads the kids across the road to the woods. There the students see and experience what has been dulled into their heads in the stuffy classroom. The classroom is no longer the parameter of learning. Field trips are now a part of high school life. These trips range from going to see the movie “WAR AND PEACE,” to visiting the Waukesha Sewer System. A sprinkling of culture on Mukwonago students was achieved when the English, SociarStudies, and Science departments sponsored trips to Chicago. The Special Education students took a day long tour of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and the Advanced Drama students spent a week in New York. English students went to see THE MIKADO and HAMLET, while the Music department saw the opera THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO. The final and most anticipated trip was the Senior class trip to New York and Washington D.C. In the fall election of 1971 the voters of the Mukwon- ago High School district determined the end of the Union High School and the formation of a new K-12 district. This instituted many changes in our school. The school administration was completely reformed. Mr. Swasey was selected as the new principal; Dr. Lohman, administrative aide. Mr. Martinka was appointed superintendent of the new K-12 district and Mr. Schacht was retained as Business Manager. It was necessary to have office space for these admin- istrators. Since space was a scarce commodity, an old storage room was pressed into service as an office. Paint and carpet transformed it into the district busi- ness office. Partitions and new furniture squeezed the new district office staff into the old storage room. Mr. Swasey is uclcomed as the new high school principal Next fall all will move with their typewriters and in dex cards to the new building. Mr. Martinka Dr. Lohman counsels a student. Mr. Schacht issues an order to Mrs. Rolfson Barbara Wendellen greets at the outer desk. Virginia Weinkauf works on payroll. Mr. Martinka's desk during a relaxed moment. And that highly per- sonal blend of learning and style and attitude and gimmicks which makes up a good teacher always contains an element of the mysterious, of the unfathomable. Faintly discernible within that mysterious element, however, is an obvious love of learning and an impartial concern for one’s students which naturally commands respect. Three teachers at Mukwonago command such respect. And so in appreciation of their achievements, the class ol 1972 dedicates their final yearbook to Mrs. Virjean Archer, Mr. Kenneth Johnson, and Mr. David Smith. Boys, you’d better win! ’71 was a year of building for Cross Country. The team’s record was not fan- tastic, but certain individuals excelled. Captain John Hyland, Charlie Radke, Mark Janovetz and John Louis were the most consistant runners on a team which finished sixth in a very tough conference race. In dual meets the team finished 500 with a three and three mark. Two races were won by Mukwona- go runners: the Salem meet by John Hyland and the Union Grove meet by Charlie Radke. There were many lighter moments this year besides just the running. For example, the time Rod Vick fell and rolled all the way down a hill, Mr. Dahle said, “Well, Vick, maybe that’s the fastest way for you to get down the hill.” Or the time Rick Burrows was entrusted with setting up the course and it turned out a half mile short. But this is a young team which will carry these memories into next year and hopefully, to a better season. They will continue to run the gruelling two and a half miles with no one to cheer them on or pity their aching bodies. 79 Mark Janovetz John Louis Steve Teske 80 ROW ONE: J. Louis, J. Stock, J. On Friday, September 8, Coach Don Enright fielded his 1971 varsity team against the non-conference eleven of East Troy. The strong line and fast backs proved too much for the Trojans and gave Mukwonago its first victory of the season. The season opener against Burlington was one of the Indians' best games. Both offense and defense played a thrill- ing game. But the Indians will have to wait until next year for a victory. Burlington blunted the effects of the team 7-0. The third football game saw a formidable opponent, Waterford, invade the confines of Mukwonago’s stadium. A display of offensive power exploded from Mukwonago and the Indians showed early that they were off to a smash- ing victory. The outcome was never in doubt and when the final whistle blew the scoreboard read Mukwonago 33, Waterford 12. Following this victory the gridders, lead by Captain Mike Winkler, crushed Elkhorn 20 to 6. Joe Bucher finished the night with a 159 yard rushing total. JV ROW I: J. Ralph, S. Harris. S. Malnory, S. Any chance for title consideration was ruined by Delavan-Darien as the hopeless Indians was snowed 34 to 14. Once again the Indian defence played superbly as Mukwonago rewarded their followers with a 20 to 8 final score over Wilmot. Because both sides were evenly matched, the Whitewater game was a see-saw with the Whippet eeking out a 7-6 victory. The last game of the season was probably one most would like to forget as Union Grove romped over the Indians 24-16. The season wound up with an overall record of five and four which placed Mukwonago third in conference. Doug Kressin was voted Most Valuable Player of the season. All Conference honors were given to Kressin, Winkler, Pett, Weber, and Bucher with honorable mention to Jim Roder. Most improved senior was Jim Weber and Al Wittenberg received this award for the juniors. Frosh ROW 1; D. McKenzie. D. Tuttle. T. Huss, J. Lutz, M. Yeager. R. Houk. D. Karlin- sky, J. Sauer. Even as hopes dimmed this year for a conference championship, exciting individual performances by the Varsity and JV wrestlers kept the Indian spirit alive. Under Coach Ted Mainella. in his first year as varsity coach, Mukwonago finished in sixth place in the Southern Lakes Conference with a 5-6 record. The excitement peaked this year at the Big Foot con- ference tournament. Led by co-captains Warren Pett and Nick Movrich. our team met success by taking four individual medals. Rod Vick, a junior letterman, maintained his perfect record and finished in first place with a 12-0 record. Nick Movrich captured sec- ond place with his 11-3 record, followed by the third place finishes of Warren Pett and Jerry Anich. Anich also finished 2nd in sectionals and went on to the state tournament. Next year looks promising for Mukwonago, for only two senior letterwinners will be lost to graduation Warren Pett and Rick Dorband. Experience will be the Indian’s strong point, with juniors Rod Vick. Nick Movrich, Jerry Anich. Al Wittenberg, Jeff Smith, Jerry Jaquity, and John Louis — sophomores Bob Movrich and Tom Agne all returning to the squad. These new hopes promise us a bright future for our new school. J.V. The varsity featured eight juniors and two sophomores, but only three seniors during the '71-’72 season. It was no surprise then that the team suffered several close losses in the early going. The climax of the season had to be Mukwonago’s stunning win over Lake Geneva. Badger came into the game unbeaten and state-ranked, but they were outhustled and outplayed by a spirited Indian squad. The J. V. jelled in the last half of the season and beat a Delavan team that had shown its strength earlier by defeat- ing our team easily. The Sophomore and Freshman teams had the most impressive records this year. Along with the returning juniors they should form the nucleus of a formidable basketball squad for next year. Due to confer- ence rules the team was ineligible to receive a trophy this year. However, on Honors Day Mr. Horn and the school decided they deserved an “unofficial confer- ence championship trophy after such a fine record. Besides having this unbeaten record, four girls (Mar- cia Holtz, Lauren Plehn, Kathy Schedler, and Dawn Rasmussen) placed third in the 880 yard medley relay at the State Tournament. But here’s a good idea of it. After the confusion of the regular school day, the girls thread their way through the halls, heading in the general direction of the locker room. This is easier said than done. Everyone is trying to get somewhere, so their paths are bound to cross. Every few steps they stop to kid around with a couple of the guys. In the locker room total chaos reigns as four squads of cheerleaders get ready for practice. When the stream of girls run into the hall once again, a transformation has tak- en place. The formerly bustling halls are almost deserted; one lone person at the far end of a wing is the only clue that the halls have ever been occupied. In a few moments the roof falls in as all the cheerleaders get to work — leaping, yelling, flipping, stamping, very accur- ately depicting a herd of charging elephants. The practice, though, is only a slight preview of what is to follow at the games. Everything that has already been men- tioned is re-enacted when the tension of the game and the crowd’s enthusiam help cheer the players to a victory. A typical cheerleader’s practice? Hardly a simple task! But a heck of a lot of fun. 97 J.v. TOP ROW: J. Morris, L. Berg, B. Szalewski, D. Ignasiak. ROW 2: D. Luebke.C. Wright. Varsity TOP TO BOTTOM: K. Schedler, R. Tischaefer, D. Termination: September as a senior is exciting, stimulat- ing — Seniors have finally ARRIVED! They are looked up to or hated by the Juniors, Sophomores and Frosh. But in the fall a new, ultra-modern building, will take over as the educational cen- ter. This building, like its predecessor, will pre- pare freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors for their future lives. The form and construction, of course, are new, but most importantly, a new concept of learning will be introduced. The up- per floor learning area will be without walls, with the library as the center and the “class- rooms” radiating out from it. Rigid study halls will probably disappear in favor of individual study in the resource centers. This does not mean, however, that the student will be free to do anything he pleases. Classes will not be held every day. A student might have class on Monday, with the remain- ing days scheduled for independent research on assignments. Or, he could meet in a Large Group Instruction area, where the teacher will be able to explain his ideas or assignments to 125 people at a time. In one aspect, it will take the place of our cafeteria by serving meals every day. But it will also remain open during the day, giving the student a place to go to relax and have a snack from the vending machines. Extracurricular activities, such as POW-WOW, ARROW, and Student Council, will have work areas for the members, a vast improvement over the present facilities. New classes, providing students with insight on life and society, will be offered, some lasting only 9 weeks. Already established classes such as Drivers Ed, Art, and Industrial Arts, will have more oper- ating space with better equipment. Theater productions and drama classes will be giv- en an auditorium to stage their productions. Sce- nery will be much easier to construct, and lighting will be enhanced by the catwalks near the ceiling. Limitations that have been forced on sports, because of inadequate space, won’t be necessary. The new gym- nasium will be twice the size of our present one. with mezzanine levels on both sides for wrestling and gym- nastics. Not only boys sports, but many girls sports, will be presented. All in all, the future is bright for Mukwonago education. In Memoriam Robert Moeller Is it so small a thing To have enjoyed the sun To have lived light in the spring. To have loved. To have thought. To have done? 156
