71 Arrow Union High School Mukwonago, Wisconsin Change was the most outstanding characteristic of the ’70-’71 school year — change in both the appearance and atmosphere of the school. One of the most significant changes was the approval of the new high school by the community. After being voted down twice, the school refer- endum passed and a new school is to be built by 1972. Until then we are forced to get along with what we have. As a result, the freshmen are being subjected to the greatest degree of change in their program. A “core” or inter-disciplinary program was set up in the annex, a metal addition to the school which was built a year ago. During the summer of 1970, it was divided into nine rooms where half the freshmen spend half their day learning the basic subjects of math, history, science, and English. Mr. Cook, Miss James, Mr. Enright, and Miss Masarik are the team teachers of the morning core, while Mrs. Linley, Mr. Douglas, Mr. Palmer, and Miss Hansen instruct the afternoon class- es. The program is coordinated by Mrs. Faucett, a reading specialist. It is flexible according to the needs of the student. 4 5 Two more attempts were made to alleviate present overcrowding. The hot lunch program was eliminated and the cafeteria was converted into a large study hall. The gymnasium became the center of lunch time activity. Tables were set up and bleachers pulled out for use by the hungry upper- classmen and half the freshmen who shared the same lunch hour. Hot sandwiches and snacks were served by a crew of senior guys. A nine-minute break, midmorning and mid-afternoon, was a welcome innovation for the student and also served the purpose of easing hall traffic. The break could either be used for doing last minute homework or for walking a certain friend to a class. Blue jeans became acceptable dress after the student council and school adopted a more liberal dress code. It was up to the stu- dent as an individual to decide if his own dress was appropriate. Pants and long hair were not unusual sights, on both male and female students. This change gave the school a more comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. This book concerns people people involved with others, people involved with sports, and special talent fields, people in- volved in fun. This involvement helps shape ideas, attitudes, and character. The student becomes a person who creates change, is indifferent to change, or one who holds back change. We feel that our school tries to create people for our society who get involved in change. Therefore this book attempts to show its people and the changes that have affected them in the 1970-'7I school year. to i Make yourself comfortable. 12 James Brenner ’71 Arrow Staff Editor-in-Chief Pat Miller Asst. Tell her to find me an acre of land: Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme: Between the salt water and the sea strands. Then she’ll be a true love of mine. The whole school united their efforts to prepare for the events of these two days — the pep as- sembly. the parade, the game, and the dance. At the pep assembly the Homecoming court was officially introduced. Beth Huss was crowned the Queen and Ed Pollock was the King. The parade was a procession of bands, cars, people, and floats. The Freshmen float was a huge ice cream cone with the theme “We’ll coming ’70 Lick ’Em. The Sohpomores produced catsup and mustard bot- tles and a hot dog for their slogan “We’ve mustard our courage and Wilmot can't ketchup.” The Juniors made an old-fashioned washing machine with the theme “We’ll wring ’em Out.” The Seniors won the class trophy for their float “The Odds Are With Us,” with two dice. The Germans won the club float trophy with a large mug and the slogan “We’ll Mug ’Em.” The game ended successfully with a 29-6 victory over Wilmot. The dance, organ- ized by Mrs. Murphy, brought the Homecoming activities to an end with the music of the Symphonic Sounds. Mi Heagle Summer Theatre Presents “Bye Bye Birdie” Two years ago the drama department established the summer Production Theater. The goal of the summer theater was to present the cooperative efforts of high school students and members of the community. The response was good. Both adults and students performed, worked on stage crews, put on make-up, and handled the publicity with enthusiasm. Last year the Summer Production Theater offered the musical “Bye Bye Birdie.” This was performed in the theater- of-the-round. a circular stage built in the middle of the gymnasium. Mr. Heagle and Mr. Mueller were responsible for the production of the play and the direction of the stage band. Oh, my back! Greg relaxes after a drink or two. ,, n 'Park “Something wild, insane and crazy” expresses the feeling of the enthusiastic audience as they watched the spring play, “Barefoot in the Park.” The close cooperation among the backstage crew, cast, and director helped to keep the audience involved in the action of the play. This comedy centers around the newlyweds, Paul and Corie Brater, who rent their first apartment, a one-room apartment. Unfortunately, it is six flights up and has no elevator. Their problem lies with getting repairmen up and keeping a worried mother-in-law down. For their performances in this play, Laura White and Mark Morrow received the Junior Acting of the Year awards; Linda Hanneman and Fred Schmidt received the Senior awards. 41 Sweetheart SOPHOMORE SWEETHEART Pat Karpf and Scott Wilfong FRESHMAN SWEETHEART Paula Hansen and Bill Hoppe SENIOR AND ALL-SCHOOL SWEETHEART Marianne Anich and Roger Walsh JUNIOR SWEETHEART Ellen Orgas and Rick Burrow Dance The Junior editors of the Annual Staff put out a great effort and made the Sweetheart Dance one of the most memorable events of the year. They began preparing for the Valentine’s Dance by holding class Sweetheart elections. Those chosen were: Marianne Anich, Senior; Ellen Orgas, Ju- nior; Pat Karpf, Sophomore; and Paula Hansen, Freshman. The editors then purchased Valentine corsages which were sold to the student body and given to the sweethearts and chaperones. Highlighted by the performance of the popular Symphonic Experience, a ten-piece band, the dance itself was a great success. Over three hundred people attended. As each person entered the dance he voted for the all- school sweetheart of his choice. The climax of the dance was the ceremony announcing Marianne Anich as the All-School Sweetheart for 1971. Coordinator of the whole affair was Mrs. Roeber. adviser to the An- nual. The staff would like to acknowledge their appreciation to her for all her advice and help with the Sweetheart Dance and the entire yearbook. 43 The Lion in Winter The Place: King Henry’s castle at Chinon, France. Ski Club The Mukwonago Sitzmachers had their finest season of skiing. Because of the 55 predicted snow flakes, the hills were in excellent condition and the skiers were able to ski from December to March. The members made weekly trips to Alpine Valley and also took a major trip to Mt. LaCrosse. The M.U.H.S. Ski Club has always been the largest organization, averaging over one-hundred members each year. This membership includes the active participation of not only the student body, but also many faculty members. The club has also been quite active, sponsoring both ski trips and school functions. Pep Club The Pep Club encouraged school spirit and helped our cheerleaders. The club members can be seen at every football game, basketball game, and wrestling meet. The signs in the school lobby inspiring our teams on to win can be credited to the club. Even though the members have a big job in arousing school spirit, you can be sure they’re having fun too. OFFICERS: Pres. Luanne Sievert; V.P. Linda Schankey; Sec.-Treas. Sue Allen; Activity Chairman Karen Bartclt. 51 Student Council Student Council is one of the most active organizations in school and yet the majority of stu- dents in M.U.H.S. know very little about it. Student Council is actually a government in itself it helps to establish rules for the stu- dent body, suggests methods for reinforcing these rules, and performs many functions for the school. Examples of its activities are: setting up the new dress code, representing the student body on the dress code board, organizing the annual Christmas fund drive (and determining what organization the money will go to), making suggestions for the new school, and attempt- ing to get an activity card for all students. Its most important function is to represent the views and desires of the student body. ROW I: P. Winkler. C. Wallace, T. Trainer, S. Boebel, L. Henze, G. Gulleckson, S. Schlicting, P. Karpf, J. Happiness is headaches, hard work, and .. . meeting deadlines. Or so it seems to the members of the Annual Staff. The headaches came every Monday or Tuesday night and sometimes all week, when the mem- bers worked frantically on their lay- outs and copy in order to meet the next deadline. The days that the pho- tographers came were also very busy because all the pictures had to be scheduled. The staff organized ice- cream sales and bake sales to raise money to cover film and picture costs. Most of the headaches naturally came to Mrs. Roeber, their advisor; Pat Miller, Editor-in-Chief; and Marianne Anich, Co-Editor. Much of the responsibility also went to the Junior Editors, Holly Archer, Cheryl Kufalk, and Judy Riddle who will be in charge of the yearbook next year. The Senior editors this year were: Sandy Berg — Sports, Nancy Chronis — Faculty, Brenda Grom- iuk — Seniors, Linda Hager Classes, Marcia Holtz — Copy, Marilyn McMiller — Activities, Marlene Pollock — Index, Linda Roeber — Academic Organizations, and Debbie Russ Art. The Pho- tographers in charge of candids were Pete Hunnicutt, Kathy Schedler, Fred Schmidt and George Vohwinkle. The duties for the staff did not end with publication of the ARROW. Instead, they ended after they dis- tributed the books and shared the reactions of fellow students. 53 Pow Wow ROW I: L. Graves. M. Marty. J. Kamenick, M. Suwalski. B.L. Kennedy, Miss Austin. The staff had to put in long hours organizing the newspaper and meeting the month- ly deadlines. Yet, they also had time for having fun and celebrating the holidays with parties. This year’s goal was to make the paper more appealing to the student body. The staff accom- plished this with a greater and more varied use of photography, art, and journalistic style. They also expanded the newspaper to six pages to include more articles and even advertisements. Their most important achievement was the organiza- tion and efficiency they had in publishing the Pow Wow this year. Editor Bonnie L. Kennedy Asst. Editor.......................................... A relatively unnoticed activity that has been suc- cessful over the past few years is debate. Those who go out for debate have a real opportunity to delve into and discuss the problems and issues of today. This year, the topic dealt with the aspects of pollu- tion and environmental control. Library Club Unlike any other group, the Library Club doesn’t have any meetings or activities. Instead the members work in the library during their study halls. These student librarians put books away, keep the shelves in order, help oth- er students find specific books, take the students’ passes to the study halls and find students who have overdue books. And if things get too dull, they can always kick a freshman out of the library for two weeks for talking. ROW 1: L. Schmidt, C. O'Brien, T. Movrich, J. Rendall, S. Foss. ROW 2: D. Kratch, S. Acker. Latin Club Last fall, the second and third year Latin students once again performed the ritual of initiating the first year students into Latin Club. The “masters” spared their “slaves” the agony of Slave Day this year, but they did make them carry out their various as- signments during Initiation Night. They also made their slaves pull the Latin Home- coming float, which was a chariot with “We’re Rom’n for a Victory” as the theme. President Mary Steinke, Secretary Tom Gitzlaff, and Treasurer Marlene Pollock officially gave the slaves their freedom at the banquet held this spring. Spanish Club ROW 1: D. Rolfc, N. Chronis, J. Some of the members have chosen a particular profession which they would like to enter. The clubs offer them specific information on that line of work. Other members have not yet decided on an occupa- tion and so the clubs give them a background of knowledge and experience for a variety of vocations. Miss Peters taught the members of the Future Homemakers of America to apply the methods stressed in Home Economics. This year the members sent baked goods to our soldiers in Vietnam. For the final activity of the year, they planned and prepared the meal for their annual Mother-Daughter Banquet. Mrs. Plotz took her Future Medical Career Club members to visit Mt. Sinai Hospital. This year the members volunteered their services to the Red Cross in the Milwaukee area. The Future Teachers of America were again given the oppor- tunity to explore possible teaching careers under the supervision of Mr. Bethke. This year the club helped to organize the Nation- al Education Week activities. After the first nine weeks of school, the members again sponsored a tutoring system for students needing remedial help. 63 ROW 1. R. Jay, D. Yerke, R. Scheffel, J. Roscncrantz, K. Villareal, R. Houk. W. Pelt. Boys’ Chorus To any student not involved in the choral department, “ma, mi, mo, moo, man” may seem to be some strange foreign language. Actually, these sounds are part of a voice exercise used by the singers each day. After warm- ing up to this recital, they sing the works of such well- known artists as Hayden, Bach, and Gershwin and of such contemporary song-writers as Bacharach. Mr. Chapman and Mr. Considine lead the choruses in singing while they accompany the members on the piano. These directors first teach the song to each section in the class and then later have the whole group harmonize to- gether. Their finished performances can be heard by the school and community in the annual concerts and tournament. ROW' 1: J. Hill, L. Beck, D. Yeager, T. Ferguson, S. Patterson, S. Schlicting, T. Poe, W. This year’s band received the honor of being chosen to play in the annual Christmas Parade in Milwaukee. It meant marching in the cold and rain during the halftime show; suf- fering through tryouts; trying to calmly face a tournament judge; performing under hot stage lights; and being re- warded with applause. Directing this year's Fresh- men-Sophomore band was Mr. Mueller. He not only was responsible for organizing the band into a sharp looking group, but he also developed the color guard and Indi- anette marching units. These groups were coordinated to present a fine show at both parades and football halftime. ROW 1: D. Turner, C. Webbcn. K. Wojcie- showski, C. Chapman. ROW 2: R. Lake, K. Smith. J. Ulrickson. S. The band performed at the school productions and this year also competed in the Spring Music Tournament. The members of the Pep Band were also chosen for their musical abilities. This band directed by Mr. Underberg, was slightly larger than Jazz band, and its members played at the basketball games and pep assemblies. ROW I: K. Hoefert, H. Rcchnagel, M. Pollock, M. Marsh, S. F . i This year Dirk Baker, Mark Conroy, George Vohwinkle and Otto Von der Hoff were chosen by a panel of teachers to rep- resent Mukwonago on the television pro- gram, “Who Knows?”. The team was coached by Mr. Brenner. Mukwonago matched their wits against Pulaski High School and came out victorious in the first match. In the next game Mukwonago de- feated Mercy High School, placing the team in the semi-finals against Riverside High School. Mukwonago put up a good fight but Riverside proved to be the stronger and defeated Mukwonago. The prize money from the two wins was given to the library to purchase books VARSITY BASEBALL: ROW I; S. Baseball by Dirk Baker As the school year draws to a close the baseball season pro- vides an outlet for baseball enthusiasts, both players and specta- tors alike. With Mr. Douglas coaching the varsity team and Mr. Enright coaching the JV team, Mukwonago is able to field a fine team every year. Last year’s Varsity team, led by co-captains Steve Morris and Dave Pakenham, came up with a fairly good season. Better things had been expected, including a possible conference cham- pionship. However, the team was forced to accept several close defeats and some bad breaks. Twelve boys earned letters, six of which were seniors. With the six returning lettermen and a fine group of players from JV the next season offers new hopes and the chance of greater achievements. JV. BASEBALL: ROW I; T. Hoeft, P. Goode, G. Gullekson, S. Last year, Mr. Nordentoft and Mr. Edwards took over for the long-time coach Mr. Dahle. With their encouragement the boy’s track season developed into one of accom- plishment. Warren Miller went to the state meet at Monona Grove in the pole vault event. Bob Winkler was chosen captain of the team and Mike Curik was voted Most Valuable Player. The season did not end in disappointment for the team members. Their victories proved to be a boost for their morale and gave them a higher goal to pursue for next season. 119 Orgas Voted Most Valuable Golfer Mukwonago’s golf teams again were close to bring- ing in conference championship titles for the school. Underlying factor in all their efforts proved to be the guidance of their new coaches, Miss Peters and Mr. Palmer. Having only a short time to prepare their players for the season, the coaches quickly organized their players to meet such schools as Whitewater and Delavan. Showing themselves outstanding in these meets were Pat Miller who was the lowest scorer and Gary Orgas who was voted Most Valuable Player. Golf meets, of course, weren’t the only forms of competition for the linksmen. One of the most exciting moments oc- curred daily in the race out to the golf courses. Leading the girls to the Lake Beulah Country Club was Miss Peters. Fin- ishing first in the dash to the new Edge wood course was Steve Plohocki. GIRLS' GOLF: P. Miller, C. Chapman, A. The team came up with a 7-2 record that was good enough for second place behind Burlington. Many of the players were beaten and bruised by the end of the first two weeks, for the practices were long and demanding, but they were ready for their first game against arch-rival East Troy. They won that game, but then lost a tough one to Burlington. They went on to win five straight, and although they lost to Whitewater, clinched second place by beating Union Grove. Because they played such fine football this year, four members of the team made the all-conference squad: Terry McAdams, Mark Conroy, Rod Knoelke, and Jim Cavender. Terry McAdams, team captain, was also selected Most Valuable Player. As a fitting end to this fine season, 32 letters were presented. Wrestling Coach Harrington Mukwonago dominated Southern Lakes wrestling again this year under their new coach, James Harrington. With only five returning lettermen, the team’s chances for a good finish at first appeared questionable. But a great deal of hard work and perseverance paid off in the end, as our young team finished with the best record in the Southern Lakes Eastern Division ten wins and one loss. Co-captains Pete Winkler and Mike Groh both had excellent rec- ords this year and provided the main incentive for our team’s suc- cess. Veterans Bill Mattert, Mike Winkler, Rick Dorband, Steve Saunders, Warren Pett, and Carl Zwicky and several newcomers on varsity helped mold together the winning combination. Five sensa- tional sophomores — Nick Movrich, Rod Vick, Jeff Smith, Jerry Anich, and Glen Gulleckson — and Freshmen Bob Movrich were just what our team needed to gain those important victories. In the conference tourney, the team took fourth place with Pete Winkler and Nick Movrich winning individual championships. 130 JV Wrestling: ROW I: G. Kazmierski, J. Louis, G. Gullekson, T. Girls Sports ’70 The 1970 Girl’s Tennis team, coached by Mrs. Zitzner, clinched fifth place in conference. With two wins and four losses they played such teams as Bur- lington. Delavan, and Big Foot. At the last match in Big Foot, they beat won 5-0. The girl’s track team had their most successful season last year, being undefeated in all their meets. They accredited their great success to hard work, skill, and their P. F. Flyers. During the daily practice, the players kept their spirits high with occasional sand fights and the inter- squad competition of pole vaulting in the showers. With a season like this and the return of top scorer Dawn Rasmussen to inspire them, the girl’s can’t help but get off on the right foot this year. 8 i % ROW 1: C. Humcke, S. Hoover, B. Tuttle, J.
