Our playgrounds were completely resurfaced and new tennisette and netball courts establishedn lt is now . pleasurable and safe to play on these courts and I hope our sport will improve accordingly, To Mr Laing CSecretary of the School Board? and his hardworking staff, we say a special thank you. Neatness badges for personal appearance were introduced this year and a Zibi trophy for the cleanest and litterafree classroom will be presented next yearo A Scripture Union Bible Quiz team saw its genesis this year, winning the regional Bible Quiz Trophy in its first year of competitionn The lnterwhouse General Knowledge Quiz was also established for the first time this yearo Consisting of a Junior CStd I H ll? HUG H Senior CStd Ill Q V7 section, it was easily won by Diaz in its inaugural year, the trophy being donated and awarded by Mr P, Bishopl FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS You will recall that our theme for this year was Change and Renewal in Education. Although we are always pledged to renewal and the seeking of better ways to educate our children, a concurrent programme of consolidation will be implemented very firmly next yearn By this I mean consolidation of programmes already operational in the School but requiring now a more practical implementations ln popular terminology, we are really going to get down to the nittyegritty of the new developments which includes their thorough application. I mention just a few: the TDA,TQ programme, fledgling but already highly successful in helping remedial and underachieving pupils who have specific weaknesses, eng. Maths and Englishg The Gifted!CreativeX Talented Programme, also in its infancy, but full of exciting prospects: expanding the use of the already popular computer with its infinite capabilities and subject choices to help the teacher and child with lessons and learning, Next year also sees the introduction of a prefect leadership course involving several schools, thus enhancing our own course begun here 2 years ago, lt is envisaged that the prefects and Principal will go off to camp for at least two days and structured workshops will be presented, At foundation level we have the introduction of a K,G, Choir with Mrs Trautmannyassisted by 5Mrs Rabie, in charge, This means we have 3 choirs from Sub A to Std V, also an ideal long sought aftero All the improvements l have mentioned cannot be carried out unless we have a willing and competent staffn This we have and next year sees the coming of topeclasspersonnel to continue the work begun by those who are retiring this years I ask the parents and teachers who are already part of this special Muizenberg Junior School family to make next year a truly memorable, watershed year for the School? which will cause the name of our School to be spoken of with even greater respect and admiration than at presento contd! It has become customary for ex pupils who visit the school to ask me, WMay I see Mr Bishop ?N Everyone of these ex-pupils go along to ' his Classroom with a certain trepidation and caution in their approach, but the respect shines Forth as does the feeling that they have been privileged to have been taught by a Std V teacher without peer, taught lessons that they as adults still remember as if it were yesterday, Mr Bishop began his career here in 1950 as Std V class teacher and Physical Education teacher from Std V to Matric, ln 1957 he was appointed ViceePrincipal, a post he has retained for the past 26 years, In his time, as many old boys still remember, he has taught Physical Education, cricket, tennis, tennisette, rugby, table tennis and athletics ln fact, being the only male staff member Capart from Mr King? he was in charge of several sports at the same time, Appointed to the post of Principal for the first time in 1977, l was naturally new to the job and slightly nervous, But I can assure you, Mr Peter Bishop made me feel at home immediately, pointing out the traditions of the school and the modus operandi of the previous principal, The new innovations and ideas which l implemented were always willingly supported by Nr Bishop, making my task that much easier, His professionalism as a teacher was an inspiration to the staff. Meticulous almost to a fault, exacting, demanding and adamant that, for example, a maths sum should be set out precisely and neatly, or that the Afrikaans pronunciation should be in the vernacular e,g, bome not bowme, rose not rowse was respected by staff and principal alike, with his thorough organization of the book room he could account for every book and pencil whenever he was asked, He was inspirational in seeing the birth of the General Knowledge Quiz, also donating a trophy for this important activity, he was also a Committee member and leading light of the Western Cape lntereschools General Knowledge Quiz, lt is quite impossible to adequately express our gratitude to Mr Bishop in any tangible form but we nevertheless asked Mr Bishop to come forward to accept a Wgoldenw token of our appreciation fa Kruger Randb, Mr Bishop like Miss Ravenscrott, is a member of the 'old' school of teaching, the likes of whom I doubt we will see again, This adds to the poignancy and sadness of this occasion, However, l know that both are looking forward to their retirement, Mr Bishop, for example, will be going on a trip to the Par East and Miss Ravenscroft will be receiving medical attention to her leg, attention long overdue but which she has put off because she did not want to disturb her teaching schedule, We thank them for their sincere and devoted service to the school, We thank them for their loyalty and dedication through the years, Their presence has left a lasting and important impression on the life and tradition of the school, It is fitting that Mr Bishop s name is perpetuated by naming the new hall the P,J, Bishop hall, Similarly Miss Ravenscroft is honoured by naming, as of now, officially, that section of the school in which she worked, for so many years, the Ravenscroft Kindergarten Centre, I know that you join with me in wishing Mr Bishop and Miss Ravenscroft a long and happy retirement, This page is sponsored by the GLUCKMAN family .
