DEDICATION “Instit 1848 — Reconstit 1867.” The words inscribed in the college are descriptive of Muhlenberg — “Founded 1848 — Refounded 1867.” Originally the Allentown Seminary and Academy, the small Allen- town college was named in the honor of Henry Melchior Muhlen- berg, the Lutheran patriarch. From its small downtown location, the college has expanded. Today there are twenty-seven buildings on the seventy-five acre campus. It is just one hundred years after the re- founding of Muhlenberg College. Long after we have left the campus, a part of Muhlenberg College will remain with us. It is perhaps, at first a tangible reminder of the college which will remain. Some notebooks, an alma mater, a memory of the lovely blossoms which announce spring to the campus — these may at first be most vivid in our memories. Later it will become the spirit of Muhlenberg which will predomi- nate in our reminisences. The ideas which are Muhlenberg, the unre- mitting forces of Muhlenberg forced us to become involved in life and people. 7

All too often the pattern of our daily life at Muhlenberg has been merely accepted as an automated existence. Study, eat, study. These comprise much of our four years. We shuffle slowly between the library and the classroom, hoping the professor will be more than ten minutes late. Often we fail to see the beauty which is the Muhlenberg campus. We miss the personality of the campus. We miss the people who make the buildings more than cold, stark upcroppings against the grayed winter skies. To know Muhlenberg you must look for it and you must look at it. You must be able to see the blending of the personalities of the students as they confront one another in their classrooms; you must place these in their context which is Muhlen- berg College. All of these things make Muhlenberg what it is to each of us. Indeed, after we have passed from the campus we will have come to realize much about ourselves and about life. We have grown at Muhlenberg. In only four years we have come to realize where we stand with the world. We have been able to find our place in the future because we have learned. It is to Muhlenberg College that this book is dedicated. 8
