3, 144. This spring, with the commencement of the seniors, Dr. Ralph D. Horsman will present his 12,000th diploma. In june, after 40 years as an educator, he will retire. Dr. Horsman graduated from Slippery Rock, his hometown college, and came to Mt. Lebanon in 1929 as a math teacher. Two years later he moved on to become principal of Washington and Howe elementary schools. In 1939, he stepped up as Mellon junior High's first principal. From 1941-1945 Dr. Horsman served as Mt. Lebanon High's principal and later in '45 assumed the position of Assistant Superintendent of schools. 1946 saw his installation as Superintendent of Mt. Lebanon schools. In this position Dr. Horsman has been a sensitive observer of human nature, significantly aware of the pressures on youth. He misses the personal contact he had with young people as a principal, and on school days at dismissal time, he can be seen standing by the windows of his office, enjoying the attitudes and expressions of children on their way home from school. Dr. Horsman has given a great deal of his time, his effort, and his ability to Mt. Lebanon and to education in general. His philosophy can be summed up in what Mt. Lebanon schools are noted for - excellence and progress. 13
