The Past, Preselhf, and Future 0 Mi. Healthy High School Seventy-eight years ago the first class of seniors was graduated from Mt. Healthy High School. In these seventy-eight years Mt. Healthy has grown from a small farming town to a city of 6200 people. Its quiet country toads have become busy thoroughfares, its farms have grown into subdivisions with many homes, and its high school has increased in size from a few students to 625. Early in the 1840's Mt. Healthy was divided into two school districts, one east and one west of the village's main street. There was a grade school. but it was not until 1891 that the first high school was established. This school offered a two-year course. Two students were graduated from the one-room, one teacher high school. As the years passed the school moved from a log cabin into successive brick buildings. Finally, a grey brick four- room schoolhouse was built where the Hunt Building now stands. A Mt. Healthy increased in size, so did the school. Additional rooms were added to this building. In 1928 the present high school was built. Not even this building could absorb all the students. Plans are now being formulated for a new high school building which will be located on Adams Road. This new high school will have thirty classrooms, a library, and a cafeteria. It will provide for modern science instruction with labs, storage rooms, and special lecture rooms. It will be possible to make the rooms larger because of folding doors, A second stage will provide for additional classrooms and a gymnasium. Later stages will add new rooms and Space for music and little theaters. The first stage of this new Mt. Healthy High School will be completed in September of 1962. l l i l 3 ll . wv,,4p-.wq-v
